RAdm. Arnold served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-5) and was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Supply Officer, in preparation for, during and after the Battle on June 4, 1942 and in attempted salvage of that ship of June 6, 1942. He was personally responsible for rescuing two members of the USS Hamman’s crew when that vessel was torpedoed.
