Ute, Iowa – Charles Hartigan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hartigan, has been graduated from a course in aerial photography at Lowry field, Colorado, and has been assigned to Pope field, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Lieut. Morris Raskin, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Raskin, Lakeport Road, has been transferred to Sarasota, Florida for training. He is a pilot in a pursuit fighter squadron.

Aviation Cadet Harold R. Grueskin, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Grueskin, 3321 Jennings Street, is receiving prebasic training at Jefferson Barrack, Missouri.

Lieut. Morris P. Warfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Warfield, 2310 E. Solway Street, is stationed at Pampa, Texas as a flying instructor.

Private John R. Bean, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Bean, 1507 Center Street, has been graduated from a military intelligence school and is serving as an intelligence instructor with the head-quarters and Service Company, engineer battalion, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Private Billey McCleerey, 2332 Beck Street, has been transferred from Camp Dodge, Des Moines to Camp Haan, Riverside, California.

Sam Levine, son of Mrs. Goldie Levine, 1413 Myrtle Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He entered the army in June, 1942 and is stationed at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He is a medical technician.

Melvin C. Olson, stationed with the field artillery at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, has been promoted to first lieutenant. After attending officer candidate school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, ha was commissioned a second lieutenant in October, 1942 and was transferred to Camp McCoy. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Olson, 3102 Leech Avenue and attended East High School.

William Hicks, 1501 S. Cleveland Street: Brian C. Kirkpatrick, 3808 Garretson Avenue, Herbert A. Baugh, 1606 33d Street, Paul A. Miller, 715 Isabella Street, Donald T. Rice, 1933 Sherman Avenue, Bernard L. Carpenter, 4307 Filmore Street, Wayne W. Soule, 2800 First Street, Charles H. Saunders, 1515 Ross Street, Clifton E. Syverson, 426 Casselman Street and Ross Roland Robbins, 2922 B. Street, South Sioux City, have reported to the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho for basic training.

Ernest O. Terry has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at the army air forces navigation school at Hondo, Texas. His wife is Mrs. Christine Terry, 1325 Summit Street.

Midshipmen Gunder F. Fribourg, William G. McAllister and Milton Taxer are being trained at the naval reserve midshipmen’s school at Notre Dame University. On graduation the men will be commissioned ensigns and will go into combat duty or be sent to advanced training schools. Seaman Fribourg is a son of Mrs. J. G. Fribourg, 1614 S. Royce Street. Seaman Taxer is a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Taxer, 2501 Jennings Street and Seaman McAllister formerly lived at 718 ½ Iowa Street.

Conrad A. Elverum, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Elverum, 5006 Morningside Avenue has been commissioned a second lieutenant after completing training at the adjutant general school at Fort Washington, Maryland.

John C. Davis has been promoted to staff sergeant at the army air force flexible gunnery school at Fort Myers, Florida. He has just completed a five-week course in the operation of aircraft guns. Sergeant Davis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Davis, 1912 S. Cypress Street.

Donald L. Blackford and Cecil A. Blackford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd F. Blackford, 505 W. 26th Street are among recent graduation of the hospital corps school at the naval hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. The men have completed a six-week course and will be transferred to naval hospitals for further training.

Carl B. Kludt of Sioux City is training as a navigation aviation cadet at the preflight school at Ellington field, Texas. Upon successful completion of the nine-week course, he will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the army air corps.

Private J. R. Goodnow has returned to his station at Jainsville, Florida, after spending a 10-day furlough here. A brother, Private William H. Goodnow, who is stationed at Chanute field, Illinois, spent the weekend here. They are sons of Mrs. C. O. Goodnow, 3520 Jackson Street.

Lawrence Stulich, who recently was promoted from corporal to technical sergeant at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stulich, 912 S. Paxton Street.

Robert Leedom, seaman first class, and son of Mrs. Lillie Leedom, 1407 Chicago Avenue, has returned to the Great Lakes training station after visiting his home.

Clarence Heppe, pharmacist’s mate second class, 1317 Morningside Avenue, was expected home on a 10-day leave from Brazil today to visit his wife.

Donald D. Andersen, seaman second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Andersen, 2609 Prospect Street, returned to the naval training base at Farragut, Idaho, Monday after spending an 11-day leave at home.

Corporal Marvin Mangold, a son of Mrs. E. R. Winter, 3210 Sixth Avenue, is taking training in a field artillery unit at Camp Chassee, Arkansas. He previously served in the navy.

Private Wilbur J. Heuertz of Daniel field, Georgia, came here to attend the funeral of his mother, Mrs. Mike Heuertz of LeMars, who died in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Edward L. Lewis, 408 W. Fourth Street.

Francis Neal Sever, 106 Cook Street, has begun training at the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho. Later he will be sent to a navy service school or assigned directly to the fleet.

Lieut. Merris R. Warfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Warfield, Jr., Douglas Street, is stationed at Pampa, Texas, as a flying instructor.

Aviation Cadet Kenneth E. Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. S. Bailey, 1617 Ingleside Avenue, has been appointed flight lieutenant for his class in a basic flying training squadron at Goodfellow field, Texas.

Private Joseph Tattwesall, 2030 S. Maple Street, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, to the College training detachment for cadet training at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. His wife and son are in Sioux City.

Clayton N. Kamm, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Kamm, 1024 S. Paxton Street, has been promoted to a Corporal. He is stationed at the army bombardier school at Midland, Texas. He enlisted January 28, 1942. His brother, Sergeant Stanley Kamm, is in North Africa.

Private Bernard M. Posey, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Posey, 3609 Peters Avenue, arrived Tuesday night for a visit with his parents, after seeing his brother, R. G. Posey, in Ankeny, Iowa. He will return Saturday to Kingman, Arizona, where he is stationed with the air corps.

William Henry Powell, naval gunner’s mate third class, who has survived four major battles and the sinking of the heavy cruiser Vincennes, spent a furlough here with his father, H.G. Powell, Malloy Road. He also saw the sinking of another cruiser, the Yorktown. His brother, Gerald Eugene, was reported missing when the Vincennes went down.

Aviation Cadet Donald McKelvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen McKelvey, 3439 Third Avenue, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for training at Coe College.

Carol H. McCormack, Elk Point, South Dakota, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. McCormack, formerly of Sioux City, has been commissioned a second lieutenant on completion of the officer candidate course at the infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Raymond F. Ringwold, aviation cadet, son of Mrs. Lily M. Ringwald, Sioux City has completed preflight training at the Santa Ana, California, army air base and has been ordered to begin actual flight instruction.

Raymond Gustavson, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.G Gustavson, 3500 W. Fifth Street and a graduate of Central High School, has been promoted from corporal to sergeant in the air corps at MacDill field, Tampa, Florida.

Emmett Copps, apprentice, second class in the navy, who spent a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Copps, 216 Terry Street, has returned to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He will attend medical school there.

Lieut. Richard L. Peete, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barret S. Peete, 3000 Pierce Street, has arrived at Camp Polk, Louisiana A graduate of the infantry officer candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was commissioned February 17. He was stationed in Northern Ireland when he was selected for officer’s training. He was recently married to the former Mary Ann Roddy, a daughter of Mrs. Anne Roddy, 507 16th Street.

Aviation Cadet Donald Lawrenson, son of Mr and Mrs. R. C. Lawrenson, 107 Helen Street, is stationed at Jones field, Bonham, Texas, where he is undergoing basic flight training. His wife, who has been living at 2523 First Street, has gone to Bonham to visit him.

Edmind K. Wanamaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wanamaker, 3105 Nebraska Street, has enrolled in the navy trade school for electricians at the naval armory, St. Louis, Missouri.

Eli H. Maresch has been promoted to a staff sergeant at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. His wife resides at 2104 Boies Street. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gappa, 1910 Boies Street.

Private Ralph W. Behn returned to Peterson field, Colorado Springs, Colorado after spending a 14-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Behn and a brother, Raymond, 1316 Villa Avenue. Private Behn was graduated as an instrument specialist at Chanute field, Illinois, last December.

Private Robert Martin, inducted into the army at Camp Dodge, Iowa, now is stationed at Camp Wheeler, Macon, Georgia. His wife resides with her mother at 318 14th Street. Private Martin is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Martin, 1216 13th Street.

Private Elmer E. Trulock, who is attached to a hospital unit at the Camp Pyote, Texas, army air base is spending a 15-day furlough with his wife at 2108 Geneva Street and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Trulock, 2803 Center Street. Private Trulock’s brother, Sergeant C. R. Trulock, is stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama.

Harold Hintz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hintz, 2722 Dace Avenue has been promoted to corporal in the United States army and has been transferred to Fort Crook at Omaha, for three months’ training in mechanics. Formerly he was stationed at Fort Warren, Wyoming and at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

Seaman Second Class John T. Donovan, member of the Sioux City fire department, before entering the service, has been assigned to the Pacific fleet. He is a son of Mrs. Marie Donovan, 1923 Riverside Boulevard.

Wayne G. Hass, 17, a senior at Central High School, has enlisted at Kansas City as an apprentice seaman in the naval reserve. When he becomes 18 years old and following his graduation, he will begin training as an aviation cadet looking toward a commission. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Hass, 1620 W. Second Street.

Second Class Pay Officer Everett Lowell Miler, stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, is here on leave visiting in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Miller, 106 Terrace Apartments.

Lieut. Harold G. Port, stationed with the air corps at Pueblo, Colorado, is spending a leave with Mr. and Mrs. Emil Barr, 402 W. First Street and his mother, Mrs. Calara Port of Akron, Iowa. He has been in the service for a year and a half.

Private Phillip Lubman, son of Mr. and Mrs Israel Lubman, 1018 14th Street, has been graduated from the gunnery department of the armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He received training in use and repair of the weapons of an armored division.

Corporal Jack Seibert, who is stationed at Providence, Rhode Island, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.M. Seibert, 321 Kings Highway. Three other sons of Mr. and Mrs. Seibert are in service. They include Corporal Robert Seibert, stationed at Camp Hood, Texas, Private Frank Seibert in North Africa and Private Bill Seibert, who arrived this week at Claremont, California to enroll in the meteorology school. He received basic training at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Private Edward Luvanski has returned to Lowery field, Denver, after spending a 14-day furlough with his wife and children at 4023 ½ Floyd Avenue. A brother, Frank, a navy coxswain, spent five days with his father, C. Luvanski, 3225 Garretson Avenue. Three other sons are in the service, John is in the Navy and Louis and Steve in the army.

Floyd B. Wright, aviation machinist’s mate third class, has been transferred to the naval aviation gunnery base at Hollywood, Florida. He is the son of Mrs. Pearl Wright, 2519 Silver Street. He was graduated from a school at the navy pier in Chicago. A Second son, Lieut. Lowell V. Wright, is a flying instructor at the Marana army flying school, Tucson, Arizona. Lieut. Wright was commissioned at Phoenix, Arizona last December and has been at Tucson since January 1.

Private Harold Ross Grueskin, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Grueskin, 3321 Jennings Street and Private Walter D. Warnholtz, 504 S. Helen Street, have arrived at the army air force replacement training center, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Both were former students at the University of Iowa.

Private A. O. Kamm, stationed in the coast artillery at Fort Worden, Washington is spending a 15-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. L. Kamm, 5410 Sixth Street.

Staff Sergeant Warren Page has returned to Fort Sumner, New Mexico after spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Page, 4240 Tyler Avenue.

John Hess, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hess, 617 W. Eighth Street, has become a first lieutenant in the army medical corps. He was graduated at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania in a class of 19 from the medical field service school and will be assigned to a post in a new medical corps unit now being organized.

Corporal Leo C. Madsen has returned to Fort Bliss, Texas, after spending a 10-day furlough with his wife and daughter, Mrs. M. Madsen of Sioux City.

Private Stephen Conklin de Vries, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen J. de Vries, 1700 Morningside Avenue and Private Russell Edward Moore, husband of Mrs. Elaine Wanda Moore, 918 W. Sixth Street have arrived at Camp Wolters, Texas for basic infantry training.

Private Allen R. Haliburton, Link trainer instructor at Waco Army Flying School, Waco, Texas is spending a furlough here with his mother, Mrs. Lola Haliburton, 1123 Wall Street.

Apprentice Seaman Mansfield John Kaus, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. w. Rowe, 1116 W. First Street has left for Des Moines where he will be assigned to a basic training center.

Lieut. Roger Hughes and Mrs. Hughes have been visiting in the homes of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Hughes, Bellevue Apartments, and Mr, and Mrs. L.E. Williams, 3909 Orleans Avenue. He had been in command of ordnance at Luke field, Arizona. This week he began an eight-week course in ordnance automotive following which he probably will return to Luke field.

Harold Graves, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Graves, 1818 George Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal at Camp Campbell, Kentucky.

Private Paul Barrett, stationed at San Diego, is spending a 15-day furlough at the home of his brother, Ray, 1008 16th Street.

Harold Vondrak, petty officer, third class, who has spent eight months aboard a destroyer in the South Pacific Ocean, is spending a ten-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vondrak, route 1. He is a ship cook.

Dale C. Grubelk, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Grubel, 3604 Fourth Avenue, has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. A former East High School pupil, Sergeant Grubel has been in the army since November. He is in an infantry unit.

Robert B. Holloway, 2315 10th Street: Jack E. Smith, 3844 Jefferson Street and Robert W. Weldon, Jr., 2026 S. Palmetto Street, were among 200 naval aviation cadets who reported Thursday at the United States navy flight preparatory school at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Charles B. Diehl, 25, 3733 Orleans Avenue has been promoted to corporal at the army air forces navigation school at San Marcos, Texas. Corporal Diehl is a mechanic in the navigation training squadron.

David Drutz, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Drutz, 1115 Villa Avenue, has passed his advancement test and now is a pharmacist mate third class. He is stationed at the United States Naval Hospital, Aiea Heights, Pearl Harbor.

Private George Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Miller of Stevens, South Dakota is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents and friends. He is stationed at Coffeyville, Kansas.

Jesse A. Tubbs, recently commissioned a second lieutenant in the army after attending officer’s training school at Camp Davis, North Carolina, is spending a short leave with relatives in Sioux City and Ida Grove. He will be stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Lieut. Tubbs, who went into active service when the Ida Grove National Guard was mobilized, spent nine months in North Ireland before returning to American for officers training.

Aviation Cadet W. L. Stokley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester C. Stokley, Lakeport Road, Route 2, has arrived at the army air force basic flying school at Garden City, Kansas. He is a graduate of Central High School and served three months in the infantry before receiving primary flight training at Cimarron field, Oklahoma.

Walter K. Hovde, 17, gunner’s mate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Hovde, 354 Alberta Avenue and Gunner’s Mate Bert E. Young, whose wife is Mrs. Mabel Young, 2325 W. Second Street, were enrolled recently in the service school at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and are studying a specialized trade.

Everett Cooper, grandson of Mrs. Millie M. Titus, 717 W. Fourth Street has been promoted to staff sergeant at Camp Carson, Colorado.

Private Boyd A Van Winkle, son of Mrs. Vernon Hansen, 3225 Fairmount Street, is taking air corps technical training at Bucley field, Colorado.

Corporal Francis Bliss has left for his station at Camp Barkeley, Texas, after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Bliss, 507 W. First Street.

Billy C. Gray, son of Dr. and Mrs. B.L. Gray of 3312 Egbert Avenue, has been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant The announcement came from the headquarters of the army air forces in the Caribbean area, where Lieut. Gray is serving with a fighter squadron. He attended Morningside College from 1939 to 1941.

Private Robert D. Cresap, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Cresap, 3214 Marshall Avenue, is a Marine paratrooper, having completed his training at San Diego, California. He has been in service since November.

Staff Sergeant Lloyd F. Donovan of Pampa, Texas is spending a 10-day furlough with his wife, the former Eva Mae Gensichen, 1423 Douglas Street and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Donovan, 1404 Palmer Street.

Lieut. Arne E. Nelson of Camp Davis, North Carolina and his wife left Monday after a visit here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Mathieson, 109 Ross Street. Before going back to camp they will visit Lieut. Nelson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Nelson at Omaha.

Private Cyril Edward Goolsby, who is stationed with the air corps at Chanute field, Illinois is spending a six-day furlough with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Becker, 1517 Willis Avenue.

Private Raymond Charles Lewis, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Lewis, 606 W. Ninth Street, has reported for duty with the coast artillery at Camp Haan, California.

Landon M. Sloan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilber L. Sloan, 2106 Nebraska Street, has enlisted at the Kansas City Naval aviation cadet selection board as an apprentice seaman in the naval reserve.

Joseph Baranowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Baranowski, 909 S. Alice Street has been promoted from corporal to sergeant. He is stationed somewhere in the Panama Canal Zone. His wife resides at 410 W. Third Street.

Private Laurence T. Stuben, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Stuben, 2115 Nebraska Street, has been graduated from an aviation mechanics course by the army air forces technical training command, Sheppard field, Texas.

John D. Moe, grandson of Dr. Olay Moe, 1218 Grandview Boulevard has been promoted to private first class at Goodfellow field, San Angelo, Texas where he has been since November.

Walter D. Warnholtz, Sioux Cityan and former student at the University of Iowa, has been assigned as a private to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, in the army air corps. He is a former Central High School student. Mrs. Gloria Warnholtz, his wife, is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Wolcott, 514 S. Helen Street.

Private First Class Robert U. Towler, 18, of the Marines, writing from the South Pacific, informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Towler, 4510 Morningside Avenue, that he is “feeling fine and that he is collecting Japanese souvenirs.”

Robert Leedom has graduated from a 16-week training course for torpedomen at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He is the son of Mrs. Lillie Leedom, 1407 Chicago Avenue.

R. D. Schooley, a lieutenant in the fire department here, has been named fire chief at an outlying naval base at Charleston, Rhode Island. He first was stationed at Quonset Point, Rhode Island He enlisted September 15 as a ship’s fitter, second class. He also served in the navy during the First World War.

Private C. Curtis Hernepont, 3007 Jay Avenue, has been transferred to the cadet training detachment at Michigan College of M. and T. at Houghton, Michigan from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. His wife resides at 1205 S. Alice Street.

Robert Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert H. Smith, 711 37th Street, has enrolled in the Fire Control Service School at Great Lakes Naval Training Station.

Lieut. Lewis Dimsdale, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dimsdale, 2023 Pierce Street, visited his parents Wednesday afternoon. He is being transferred to the army hospital at Clinton, Iowa from Camp Claiborne, Louisiana.

Jack P. Fleckenstein, stationed at Fort Crook, Nebraska, has been promoted to technician fifth grade. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Fleckenstein, 2907 Nebraska Street.

Wesley T. Piper has been promoted to technician fourth grade. He is ward master in charge of medical technicians in the station hospital at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He formerly lived at 706 Court Street.

Jack Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Miller, 4050 Adams Street, has been promoted to private first class at Camp Haan, California, where he is stationed with an anti-aircraft unit.

Sergeant W. L. McRae will return to Foster field, Victoria, Texas tonight after spending an 11-day furlough with relatives here. His wife and daughter live at 3210 First Street.

Melvin D. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Brown, 1019 Summit Street, has been promoted to corporal-technician at the cavalry replacement training center at Fort Riley, Kansas. He is a troop clerk.

John W. Adkins of Beardston, Illinois, has been promoted to first lieutenant at the Sioux City air base. He enlisted as a private in September, 1939 and after serving at Hickman field, Manila and at Midway, returned to attend officer candidate school. Upon being commissioned in June, he was sent to the base here, where he has been property officer and a member of the officer candidate board.

Drew A. Solberg, whose wife resides at 1610 W. 16th Street, is attending machinists’ mate school at Great Lakes naval training station.

Sioux Rapids, Iowa – Technical Sergeant G. Richard Burr, former Sioux Rapids insurance man, has been promoted to the rank of first sergeant. He is stationed with a signal corps unit at Fort Hancock, New Jersey.

Sibley, Iowa – Dorothy Timmons has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army nursing corps and will be stationed at Schick general army hospital at Clinton. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Lee Timmons of Ocheyedan and is a graduate of the Edmundson Memorial hospital at Council Bluffs. Before entering the nursing corps she worked at a Worthington, Minnesota clinic.

Denison, Iowa – Allan Anderson who has been on limited service at Camp Roberts, California, since December, has been given an honorable discharge. He will resume his duties here as bank custodian.

Private Alfred E. Sager, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Sager, 1108 W. Third Street has been transferred from Fort Frances E. Warren, Wyoming to the Mount Rainier ordnance depot at Tacoma, Washington. He is attending a motor maintenance school.

Private Bud Nelson, son of Mrs. H. Teske, is stationed at the marine base, San Diego, California.

Lawrence Teller, son of Mrs. Alice Teller, 2106 Fairbanks Street has been promoted to a corporal in an air corps unit somewhere in Alaska. He is a radio operator.

Gerald J. Speck hospital apprentice second class has been graduated from the bureau of medicine and surgery at the naval hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. A brother, Elroy P. Speck, seaman second class has completed an aviator metal smith course at the naval air technical training center, Jacksonville, Florida and has been transferred to San Diego, California. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Spec, 119 Kansas Street.

Private James Hittle has returned to Camp Coffeyville, Kansas after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Hittle, 415 W. Fourth Street. He is a member of the air corps.

Allen H. French, seaman first class has returned to Great Lakes training station after spending a nine-day leave with his wife, who resides at 2703 Ross Street and mother, Mrs. Ida Austin, 2006 w. Fourth Street.

Lawrence S. Slotsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. W C. Slotsky, 712 34th Street was to leave today for San Antonio, Texas where he will begin training as an army air force cadet. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa, holding a B.S. degree.

Arlo Raymond Blanchard and Clateus Clement Asbra have been commissioned second lieutenant upon completion of an officer’s candidate course in the infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia. Lieut. Blanchard, a sergeant before promotion, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy H. Blanchard, 3028 Melrose Avenue. Lieut. Asbra, formerly a corporal, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. A. Asbra, 2315 S. Lakeport Street.

Vincent J. Hurley, 2615 S. Cleveland Street, was promoted recently to Corporal. He entered the army in August, 1941 and was assigned to quartermaster service at an air base in Reno, Nevada.

Private George Parker, 3428 W. 30th Street, has been assigned to a medical replacement training center at Camp Robinson, Askansas.

Eugene E. Guillaume, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin A. Guillaume, 3106 Panama Street, has been promoted to private first class at Camp Haan, California. He was inducted into the army February 3.

Private Don Horton, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Horton, 210 30th Street, who was inducted into the army February 21, is with the engineering corps stationed at Camp McCain, Mississippi.

Thomas Leon Vinson who served as a radioman on a naval bomber during the Jap attack on Manila in December, 1942 and fought the Japanese in Java later, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Vinson, 1818 14th Street, and his wife who lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Schreider, 2420 Ridge Avenue. Radioman Vinson will be stationed in the United States when he returns to duty.

Aviation Cadet Charles Clayton Kopp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Kopp, 2600 W. Fifth Street, is a member of a student officer and cadet class to be graduated soon from the army air forces advanced flying school at Yuma, Arizona. Graduates will be commissioned second lieutenant. Prior to his appointment as an aviation cadet, Kopp served with a cavalry unit at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Joseph A. Heeb, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Heeb, 718 ½ Iowa Street, is attending a naval radioman’s school at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Others taking the course include Robert M. William C. (Bill) Yockey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Yockey, 4636 Central Avenue, has enlisted in the marines and is stationed at San Diego with his younger brother, Rene, who enlisted in February. Mr. Yockey is a veteran of the First World War.

Private John Short, stationed with an air corps cadet detachment at Waco field, Texas is spending a 15-day furlough with his wife and daughter at 2001 Isabella Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace M. Short, 1524 Isabella Street.

Private Irving Ducoffe, son of Mr. and Mrs L. A. Ducoffe, 107 Terrace apartments, now is in the clerical department of the medical corps at Camp Barkley, Texas.

John S. McDonald, Jr. who recently completed “boot” training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, is spending a week’s leave with his mother, Mrs. John S. McDonald, 2817 Jennings Street. His father, a major in the air force, is stationed in Washington, D. C.

Leo McCoy Martin was promoted to the rank of sergeant at Camp Butner, North Carolina, where he is stationed. Sergeant Martin is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Martin, 1216 13th Street. He is a Central High School graduate and has been in the armed forces for one year.

Private Galvin W. (Kelly) Nyreen, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Nyreen, 4211 Madison Street, is stationed at Camp Roberts, California.

Chelsea W. Thompson has been promoted from private to corporal in the infantry at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He entered the army in July 1942 and formerly was stationed at Camp Swift, Texas. Corporal Thompson is a son of Mrs. Grace Thompson, 1611 S. Cleveland Street and of Harry E. Thompson, 213 Main Street.

William M. Giesen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Giesen, 1806 S. Maple Street, has been promoted from staff sergeant to technical sergeant. Following completion of a seven-day furlough, he returned to Camp Carson, Colorado with his wife and baby daughter, Sandra Kay. Mrs. Giesen’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Haskins, 1209 S. Paxton Street.

Corporal Alfred S. Cresap now is stationed in North Africa; he has informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Cresap, 3214 Marshall Avenue.

Jack Higney, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Higney, 424 Center Street, a member of the air corps at Providence, Rhode Island has been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Virgil Olmstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Olmstead, 4700 Correctionville Road, arrived for a 15-day furlough with his parents; Mr. Olmstead had been on sea duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Although he has not been in any battles, he said, he was close enough to hear gunfire. A brother, Leonard Olmstead is in the army at Belvoir, Virginia.

Salix, Iowa – Durwood Alfred Naese, seaman first class, reported missing after the capitulation of the Manila Bay area, is now reported to be a Jap prisoner by the navy according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Naese, residents of Salix until several years ago when they moved to Kankakee, Illinois.

Lawton, Iowa – Roberg George Dicus, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Byers of Lawton has arrived at the naval training station at Faragut, Idaho.

Akron, Iowa – Sergeant Kenneth Small, son of Mr. and Mrs. Avery Small, is spending a few days here from the bombardier training school at Big Springs, Texas.

Seaman Second Class LeRoy Brown, son of Mr, and Mrs. Roy Brown of Brighton, Colorado and formerly of Sioux City, has returned from convoy duty in Africa for a furlough here with his parents.

Milton Lehman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lehman, 3051 Valley Drive, has been promoted from corporal to the rank of technician, fourth grade.

Second Lieut. Howard F. Carlson, son of Mr and Mrs. H. F. Carlson of Chesterton, Indiana, has been missing in action since February 19; word has been received from the war department by his sister, Mrs., Ernest M. Raun, 2125 McDonald Avenue. Lieut. Carlson resided here with his sister four years while attending Morningside College and was last heard from New Guinea.

Corporal David R. Thompson, technician with the central dental laboratory of the Seventh corps area at Jefferson, Barracks, Missouri, has returned to camp after a three-day furlough spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Foster Thompson, 3259 Nebraska Street. Another son, John Thompson, attached to the army air corps, also temporarily is stationed at Jefferson barracks. Mr. Thompson is clerk of the district court.

Private Stanley C. Hamel, attached to an armored motor division, has arrived safely in North Africa. Word of the arrival was received by his wife, Mrs. Hamel, 315 S. Irene Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hamel, 115 Main Street. Private Hamel enlisted last June 9. He is a Central High School graduate.

Harold Chartier, gunner’s mate third class, who recently has been on convoy duty, is spending a 15-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Beulah Douglas, 516 ½ Sioux Street.

Robert S. Zane has been promoted from private to corporal somewhere in England, according to word received by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. W. J. Zane, 1307 Court Street.

Fred E. Brimmer, former Sioux City policeman, has been promoted to first class petty officer in the coast guard. He is stationed at Portsmouth, Ohio. Mrs. Brimmer lives at 2211 28th Street.

Cadet George Nick Scabo, 20, son of Mrs. Nick Mavros, 334 S. John Street, has completed primary air corps training at the naval training school, Ames, Iowa and is visiting his mother while awaiting assignment to a preflight school. A brother, John Scabo, is stationed in Australia.

William Zeplain, 24, son of Mrs. Dora Zeplain, 601 Morgan Street, has been promoted to sergeant at the signal corps school in Kansas City. Sergeant Zeplain graduated from Central High School in 1936 and enlisted in the signal corps on October 5, 1942.

D. D. Courtright, a son of O. A. Courtright, former Sioux Cityan now of Long Beach, California, has been advanced to captain. A graduate of Central High School, he now is stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Private William B. Fahey is spending a 15-day furlough with his wife Cecelia and son Billy, at 901 Virginia Street. He is stationed at the army air force navigation school, Hondo, Texas.

Private Donald L. Strong of the United States Marine Corps is on leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Strong, 109 Isabella Street. He has completed a three-month radio training course at Utah State College at Logan. Private Strong graduated of Central High School and attended Iowa State College. He enlisted last September 13.

Private Paul C. Peterson has returned to Lowry field, Denver, Colorado after spending a six-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Agnes Peterson and a sister, Mrs. G. M. Johnson, 2137 S. Lemon Street.

Corporal Arthur Beck has returned to his post as an air corps mechanic at Richmond, Virginia after spending a 15-day furlough with his wife at 4026 Madison Street.

Pocahontas, Iowa—Private Frederick Buske, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Buske of near Gilmore City, Pocahontas County, has been missing in action in the north Africa area since February 17, according to the war department.

Spencer, Iowa—Milford Nielsen of Everly, reported missing last May, is a prisoner of the Japs in the Philippine Islands. The news came in a letter to his mother, Mrs. John Westphalen of near Everly. It was the first word concerning him received since the report that he was missing. The letter came from the government through the Red Cross. Nielsen, 25, enlisted in the navy in 1938 when he was a senior in Everly high school. During his last year in service before being captured he was in submarine work off Corregidor.

Orange City, Iowa – C.M. Haverkamp, 21, of Orange City, received his wings and a commission as a navigator at Mather field, California. He is now stationed at Pyote, Texas. A brother is in officers training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

George, Iowa—John Janssen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Janssen, who was in the enlisted reserve at Central College, Pella, has been called to active duty in the army and is at Camp Dodge. Robert hector, son of Mr. and Mrs. Garrett Hector of Sheldon, another Central College student, also has been called to duty.

Staff Sergeant Lawrence B. Merwin, attached to the army air corps, has arrived safely in North Africa. Word of his arrival has been received by his wife and two children, 505 Omaha Street. Sergeant Merwin was inducted last September 2.

Rolland Gifford, 20, who entered the Marine Corps about a year ago, is stationed “somewhere in the pacific.” His brother, Walter Van De Walker, 17, also a Marine, is stationed at Barstow, California. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. George Gifford, 2648 S. Helen Street.

Paul T. Jorgenson, Commerce building, now is a second lieutenant in the navy signal corps. He has completed training at Camp Murphy, Florida.

Carl W. Longren is in the army air force technical school at Yale University seeking the rank of second lieutenant in aircraft maintenance engineering. Private Longren is a son of Arvid Longren, 3210 13th Street.

He recently was graduated from a naval air gunner’s school at Jacksonville, Florida and from here will go to Alameda, California. Radioman Tesha was inducted last August 3. He is a Central High School graduate.

William Larson, son of Harvey M. Larson, Doon, Iowa, has been graduated from the aviation radio school at the naval air station, Jacksonville, Florida. He enlisted in the navy October 11, 1942

Wilbur H. Pederson, former Sioux City dentist who has been in the navy since before the United States entered the war was promoted March 3, to the rank of lieutenant commander, he informed his brother, Dr. Russell M. Pederson. Lieut. Comd. Pederson is stationed at the naval air base at Corpus Christy, Texas. He attended the University of South Dakota and the University of Iowa.

Corporal Jack A. Kellogg, 24, stationed with the signal service unit at Washington, D.C., is spending a 10-day furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Kellogg, 1921 Hamilton Street.

Frank J. Mullin, seaman first class, is home on a nine-day leave visiting his mother, Mrs. Anna Mullin, 1424 w. Palmer Street and other relatives. Mr. Mullin has been stationed at Norfolk, Virginia and upon his return will go to Camp Holiday, Gulfport, Mississippi for advanced training.

Hoadley Dean, former Journal-Tribune reporter, has been promoted from second to first lieutenant at Camp Dodge, Des Moines.

Corporal Richard R. Seaton, United States marines, has arrived safely at a post “somewhere in the South Pacific,” according to word received by his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. AE. B. Seaton, 4416 Morningside Avenue.

Private Lloyd Dean, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dean, 307 ½ W. 25th Street, is spending a 10-day leave with his parents. He is stationed with the army air corps at Midland, Texas.

Vincent Snyder, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Snyder, 2624 Virginia Street, received a promotion to pharmacist’s mate first class in the coast guard. He enlisted in the coast guard 15 months ago and received training at Columbia University.

George Sokolovske is spending a 10-day leave with his parent, Mr and Mrs. Joe Sokolovske, 2716 Macomb Avenue. Upon his return to the Great Lakes he will continue aviation radio studies.

Louis Tokarcyk, John Yanushefsky and Thaddeus Buddi, who are stationed at the Great Lakes naval training station, are spending leaves with their parents here.

Rex Loe, 1717 Isabella Street, has enlisted in the army and has reported for duty at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

William A. Lewis, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd F. Lewis, former Sioux Cityans, has been promoted to private first class. Private First Class Lewis was graduated from Central High School last June. He entered service six weeks ago and is assigned to a coast artillery unit at Camp Haan, California. His wife, the former Caryl Sterling, reside with her husband’s parents in Davenport.

Joseph F. Falkowski, Flint, Michigan, stationed at the Sioux City air base, has been promoted to the rank of technician fifth grade.

Richard P. Sulzbach, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Sulzbach, 1706 Rebecca Street has arrived at the University of Minnesota for a five-month course in army air force instruction.

Lawrence J. Lee, technician third grade and son of Mrs. Margaret Lee, Sioux City, has been promoted to the rank of technical sergeant. Sergeant Lee is stationed in the adjutant general’s section at headquarters, army ground forces, Washington, D. C.

C. B. Auierick, son of Mrs. Ethel Auierick, 1623 W. 16th Street, has been promoted to corporal in the air corps. Corporal Auierick graduated from radio technical school at Madison, Wisconsin and later from advanced radio technical school at Boca Raton Field, Florida, where he is now stationed.

Harold L. Barker, seaman first class, has returned to Great Lakes, Illinois after a visit with his wife, Mrs. Harold L. Barker, 1915 W. Fourth Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Barker, 1403 25th Street. He will be enrolled in the Electrician School.

Private First Class Stanley Sewell, of the Marine Corps, son of Mrs. Margaret Sewell Shepard apartments, now is in New Zealand. Word of his arrival there from Guadalcanal where he was stationed for many months guarding Japanese prisoners, was received Tuesday by his mother.

Sergeant Lawrence Lesser, stationed at Camp Davis, North Carolina, is spending a week with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Wiener, 202 13th Street.

Private Albert William Fahey, Jr. son of the late Albert Fahey, for many years superintendent of street lighting in Sioux City, has been transferred from Shepherd Field, Texas to Kingman, Arizona where he is completing training in the army air corps and expects to receive his wings within six weeks. His mother now lives in Burbank, California.

Aviation Cadet Don L. Gereau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gereau, 419 Omaha Street, has left for San Antonio, Texas to begin preflight instruction in the army air corps.

Private Donald L. Thompson, son of Mrs. C. H. Gabraith, 5950 Morningside Avenue, has been stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Harold C. Haller, seaman third class, son of A. W. Haller, 1219 21st Street, has been graduated from the naval training school at Memphis, Tennessee and is now taking a course in aerial machinegun training at Jacksonville, Florida.

S. F. Schalinske, second lieutenant in the engineering corps at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, is spending a 10-day leave here with his wife, 1728 W. 28th Street, before reporting next week at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

First Lieut. James H. Wellwood, 8511 Fourth Avenue, has finished a six-week course in chemical warfare and maintenance of material at the Edgewood, Maryland arsenal.

Delear M. Baldwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Baldwin, 510 Main Street, stationed at the armored force replacement training center, Fort Knox, Kentucky, has been commended for his handling of the light machinegun, with which he fired a score of 126 out of a possible 128.

Seaman Second Class Howard L. Holmes, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Holmes, 1709 W. Fourth Street, has been graduated at Camp Luce, San Diego and transferred to the electric hydraulic school at the San Diego destroyer base for three months advanced training.

Robert C. Johnson, whose wife Betty lives at 509 S. Cornelia Street, has been promoted from private to corporal technician and has been assigned to a course of study in surveying at the University of Kentucky at Lexington. Corporal Johnson is the son of Mrs. Clara Johnson, 511 S. Cornelia Street.

Aviation Cadet Jack A. Savage, son of Mrs. Pearl Savage, 918 S. Paxton Street, is attending preflight school at Kelly field, San Antonio, Texas.

Dwight Mehl, Hornick has received his third class petty officer rating at the Ottumwa Naval Air Base. He enlisted in the navy October 13, 1942 at Des Moines.

Walter C. Doty, 2323 S. Royce Street, of the infantry replacement center at Camp Roberts, California has been selected to attend a three-month course at the infantry officer’s candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Private Howard B. Bradbury, son of Mrs. Victoria J. Bradbury, 2105 S. Palmetto Street, has arrived at Strother field, Kansas to take basic flying training. He was formerly at Randolph field, Texas.

Private First Class Pat Sampson of Caspar, Wyoming, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Sampson, 609 ½ Fifth Street. He is a former Tribune carrier. A brother Bob recently was dismissed from service when he suffered loss of an eye during action in China. Another brother, Melvin, also is in service.

Corporal James Hynes, stationed in North Africa, in a letter to his mother, Mrs. L. Ashcraft of Sioux City, told of action in the front lines of Tunisia. Corporal Hynes resided with his grandparents, Mrs. Kittie Eastman, 509 W. Ninth Street, when here.

Private Clifford Harris, former member of The Journal sports staff, has been graduated from the army air corps armament school at Buckley field, Denver, Colorado and has been transferred to the west coast.

Sidney G. Skidmore, seaman second class, is spending a 10-day leave from the Great Lakes Naval training Station with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Skidmore, 1615 River Drive.

Ensign Tone H. Kelly, U.S.N.R., son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kelly, 1817 Summit Street, and Ensign Tom Bolton, U.S.N.R., son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Bolton, 2705 Valley Drive, have left for Chicago where they will attend the University of North-western medical school.

Richard DeLashmutt, student in technical training school at Amarillo, Texas, has been promoted to private first class He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dell DeLashmutt, 1801 24th Street. He was inducted last October 27.

Chief Petty Officer Bernard Gayewski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Gayewski, 1131 S. Linn Street, who has been in the navy for the last seven years, has completed an aviation course in the Panama Canal Zone where he is stationed. He was a machinist’s mate until his promotion a month ago. Officer Gayewski has been stationed in the Canal Zone for the last three years. He is an East High School graduate.

Albert Anderson has received word that his brother, Private Alf Anderson, is stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Peterson, Iowa – Adelbert A. Johnson, here to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson, has spent seven months in the navy which took him into action in some of the important battles. Adelbert is a seaman first class.

Sibley, Iowa – A cablegram received through the American Red Cross by Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Horton of Sibley, advised them of the safe arrival of their daughter, Kathryn Horton , in north Africa. Miss Horton, a graduate of Grinnell College, taught a year at Hartley and three years at Sheldon. Until December she had been physical education director in the public schools at Grinnell, when she resigned for overseas service with the American Red Cross.

Ute, Iowa – Private Virgil M. Jerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Jerman of Ute is now stationed at the University of Minnesota for a course in air force instruction prior to his appointment as an aviation cadet. Corporal Glenn Chedester of Ute has left for Newfoundland after a visit with his family here.

Collins, after having completed basic training at St. Petersburg, Florida, has been promoted to the rank of corporal in the radio signal intelligence company attached to the army air corps, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff E. Collins, 1711 S. Clinton Street. Stationed at Bolling Field, Washington, D. C. Corporal Collins is a graduate of East High School and a former Journal-Tribune carrier.

Darwin W. Detleff, 1335 21st Street, left Sunday for Shepherd Field, Texas, to begin basic training as an aviation cadet.

Willard L. Toeppe, 3402 Peters Avenue has been promoted to the rank of corporal of a radio detail following the completion of a course in a wiring school. He is stationed at Camp Butner, North Carolina.

Henry W. Fachman, son of George Fachman, Plum Creek Road, has been promoted to the rank of technical corporal. He is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Nathan Dvorkin, 1522 Ross Street, has been promoted from sergeant technician to staff sergeant in one of the Camp Grant, Illinois, medical training battalions.

Lieut. Edward A. Swift, son of Mr. and Mrs Lawrence D. Swift, 111 15th Street, naval supply corps officer at the air base at Norman, Oklahoma, will arrive in Sioux City Friday for a four-day visit before leaving for the west coast, where he will be stationed at the Alameda, California air base previous to assuming duty with the fleet. Ensign Robert D. Swift, another son, with the communications service, expects an early transfer from San Francisco to a communications school in Arizona.

Edward McLaughlin, stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, with the army air forces, is seriously ill with spinal meningitis and has been removed to the Scott Field Hospital at Belleville, Illinois. His mother, Mrs. Edna V. McLaughlin, 4316 Orleans Avenue and his aunt, Leona Wackler, left by plane to be with him.

Lester Simonsen, petty officer first class gunner’s mate, has completed a 15-day furlough visiting in the home of his two sisters, Mrs. Roy Thorson, 1617 Sixth Street and Mrs. Ed McLaughlin, 1821 Elkhart Street. He has been on active duty five months in Australia and this was the first time he had been home for four years. He is stationed at Oakland, California.

Harold C. Gallant, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Gallant, 228 Helen Street, has been promoted to technician fifth grade at Camp Wallace, Texas, where he is serving in the quartermaster detail of the antiaircraft replacement training center troops.

Lieut. C. M. (Tip) Skalby, former Morningside College student, has completed a two-month course in a personnel school at Washington and now is returning to duty at a camp near Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Private Keith McWilliams, who is attached to an ordinance company at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, is spending a furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. McWilliams, 1616 W. 18th Street.

Private Phil Schlaifer, son of Mr. and Mrs Leo Schlaifer, 2118 Jones Street, has been transferred to the chemical warfare division of the air corps at Shepperd field, Texas.

Lawrence Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Taylor, 722 Clark Street, who is stationed at Camp Waldron, Farragut, Idaho, is taking examinations for seaman second class.

Private First Class Don L Strong of the United States Marine Corps has left for Corpus Christi, Texas, after spending a 14-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle F. Strong, 109 Isabella Street. He recently completed a three-month course in a special radio work at Utah State Agricultural College and will enter advanced radar training at Corpus Christi.

Private First Class Roscoe Wilkinson has been transferred from the Lincoln, Nebraska air base to the training detachment of the A.A.F. at Detroit, Michigan. Private Wilkinson’s mother, Mrs. Effie Englehart, resides at Storm Lake and his wife at 2427 W. Fourth Street.

Sergeant Robert G. Closner, son of Mrs. Josephine Shurdevin, 1519 Silver Street, is home on a 15-day furlough from Camp Shelby, Mississippi. A brother, Sergeant Arthur E. Closner, is somewhere in Alaska and another brother, Lester L. Closner, petty officer third class, is in the naval air corps at Pensacola, Florida.

Private Frank James O’Rourke, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. O’Rourke, 2019 S. Nicollet Street, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to St. Louis where he is attending Washington University for a course in army air corps training.

Sergeant Stanley R. Freeman of the Marine Air Corps has arrived safely “somewhere in the south Pacific” area, according to word received by his wife, 135 Whitehouse Street.

William Hafits, son of Dave Hafits, 1419 Virginia Street, has been promoted to private first class at the army air base, Kearney, Nebraska.

James Wendell McCormick has arrived “overseas” his wife and son, Jimmy, who reside at 420 14th Street, have been informed.

Private Lloyd E. Sease, son of Mr. and Mrs C. J. Sease, 406 S. Helen Street, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin for training in an army air corps detachment.

Private Richard Lechner, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Lechner, 2422 Douglas Street, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to Washington University at St. Louis. He will take a four months course in the army air crew detachment.

Private Richard Smith, formerly at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri and a member of the army air corps, has been transferred to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for training. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Carrol N. Smith, 2221 Jackson Street.

Private Danny Haviland – Although he never has shot a gun before entering the armed service, Private Danny Haviland, son of Mrs. Jack Neuman, 410 13th Street, after one month of training, has given other soldiers at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, something to shoot at. Private Haviland received an “expert” rating for making the highest score in rifle shooting in his platoon at Camp Wheeler, by scoring 207 points, which lacks only 13 points for a perfect record. The highest previous score was 120.

Private Homer Dunn, son of Rev. and Mrs. George W. Dunn, 1915 Nebraska Street, has arrived for training in the army air corps at St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

Francis Benton, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Benton, 1409 W. 2d Street, who has been located at Midland, Texas for five months, has been transferred to Kelly field, Texas, to begin basic aviation training.

Jack Kroesen, a former Sioux Cityan, has been promoted to corporal and is a band librarian at Fort Maxey, Texas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kroesen, who now live at Independence, Missouri.

Private Alfred Steele of the field artillery has been transferred from Camp McQuade, California, to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, according to word received by his wife, who lives at 508 Center Street.

Edward M. Connolly, machinist’s mate second class, has returned to duty at the San Francisco Naval Base after spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Connolly, 3336 Nebraska Street. Edward Connolly has four brothers in service; Bill, Bob, and Jim are in the navy. Maurice is in the Marine Corps.
