CITY LIBRARY.
Located second floor, corner Pearl and Fourth. Organized by the Young Men's Literary Association in 1869. Taken charge of by the city, Oct. 10, 1877. Contains about 2,000 books. A levy of one-half of a mill was made for library purposes in 1878, which amounted to $425, and in 1879 another levy was made of about $900. The officers are: Committee, L. Humbert, chairman; E. Morley, J. Franz; Librarian, Miss Ellen Smith.

The Union Brass Band, (formerly Reed's cornet band), a first-class organization, organized Dec. 1878. Educated musicians, under the leadership of Prof. M. E. Reed. A first-class orchestra in connection with band. Headquarters at Music Hall, on Fourth street.
