THE UNION PRODUCE COMPANY

A meeting of this newly-organized, farmer's cooperative was held at Bullard's Hall. The following members were selected as a temporary board: H. P. Nicholson, chairman; George Broihier, sec'y; Wm. Funke, Julius Brown, Charles Ginapp, Elmer Rosa, and Knute Tovson, directors. The new co-operative will be named, "The Union Produce Company." The firm will be located in the old James Malloy office and residence at the corner of Main and Mary streets.

In an unusual move, the position of manager was awarded to the lowest bidder. J. B. Wagner was successful in getting the job.

The Malloy building was razed in 1914 and a new 24' X 40' structure was erected on the lot.

The company was re-organized in 1943. The poultry and egg storage plant built by Clair Limbeck was added to expand warehouse facilities.

The office and storage area were remodeled in 1955 a fertilizer warehouse, with a capacity of 400 tons, constructed at the site of the old Milwaukee stock-yards in 1964. This facility was converted to a blending plant four years later, and its capacity expanded to 1500 tons; a bulk petroleum plant was built in 1967.

In 1969, grain handling facilities were added with a capacity of 30,000 bu. at a location just west of town. This unit has been expanded to 300,000 bushel storage and now includes a mixer and roller mill. The company moved its office to this location in 1982.

The little, one-employee cooperative, founded by a handfull of area farmers in 1910, has grown to a successful agri-business, with its 843 shareholders contributing, as patrons, to $5,000,000 in sales during I980. The company presently has eleven full-time employees—the second largest employer in Ossian.

The graduates from O. H. S. this spring were: Linnie Gilbert, Luverne Bullard, Hazel Nicholson and Margaret Heck. Marie Etteldorf and Louis Frerich graduated from De Sales.

The Ossian Mercantile Company advertised a "going out of business sale". Among the listed bargains were 50 dozen pair of ladies cotton hose at 5 1/2 ¢ ea. and hairnets for 3¢.

Postmaster Riveland announced that a postal savings bank will be established at the local office.

The postoffice was robbed of $317.50 when two burglars blew the safe. Several residents admitted hearing the explosion, but no alarm was sounded.
