Young, Milton and Arleen Fadness

(Milton & Arleen Young)

Milton D. Young was born in Pleasant Twp. 3 Dec 1920, son of Diebold and Alberta Larson Young. Diebold or “Dick" as he was known, was born in Alsace, France, 11 Dec 1878, and arrived in America at the age of three. They settled in the Locust area, moving to Pleasant Twp. in 1917. Alberta was born 23 Jan 1888, always living in the Pleasant Twp. area. They are both buried in the Locust Cemetery.

Arleen Fadness Young was born in Pleasant Twp. 3 Apr 1921. Parents are Erick and Anna (Svendsen) Fadness. Erick Fadness was born in Garretson, SD, 27 Nov 1988, moving to the Canoe-Sattre area at an early age. In 1923 they moved to Canoe Twp. They are both buried in Hauge Cemetery.

Milton and Arleen were married 15 Oct 1944. They purchased the Young farm in 1948 doing general farming. Son Dennis Edward.

Dennis loved farming and was in partnership with his dad and most of the years they worked off the farm in town.

On 28 Aug 1965, Dennis married Diane (Larson), having purchased a farm next door to his home farm. They are the parents of Doreen Ann, Darren Edward, and Dawn Renee. They have since sold their farm and live in Decorah. Doreen is married to David Holstad, Dawn is married to Harald Youngblood. Doreen and David Holstad’s daughter Danielle Marie.

Music has always played a large part throughout Arleen’s life. Having played the violin in her earlier days and with her family grown and on their own, Arleen started playing the violin once again with the encouragement of her friend Virginia Faldet, who played piano. The two would practice together and soon were playing in several churches and in retirement homes.

The highlight was being asked to play for King Olaf of Norway during one of his visits to Decorah. Later they were joined by another violin player, Helen Ehrie, and when Virginia was unable to play, Ruth Ellingson joined them on the piano. They were known as the “Nordic Trio”. Later, they were fortunate to be able to have Vern Koenig join them with his guitar, and they became known as the “Nordic Players.”
