and Cherrie Dee. Both daughters were born in Decorah. Joyce married Donald Voves (see Donald Voves story). Kenneth died 2 Oct 1976 at Oregon State Hospital and was buried there.

Cherrie married Ronald David Macal 28 May 1960 in Cedar Rapids, IA. Ronald was born in Winneshiek Co. to George and Almeda (Johnson) Macal. They had a daughter, Brenda Lee. Cherrie and Ron later divorced. Cherrie works at the 3-M factory in Ames, IA. Wayne Allen Macal was born at Decorah to Cherrie Macal and Duane Martins. He graduated from Decorah High School, Hawkeye Tech (1988) and Iowa State University, Ames with a degree in Engineering (1995). Wayne works at Sauer Sundstrand, Ames.

Brenda Macal married Kenneth James Pankow 14 Feb 1960 at the United Methodist Church, Decorah. Ken was born at Decorah the son of Norman and Patricia (Sphar) Pankow. Brenda is the Manager in the Co-op, Radcliffe, IA. Ken is a student at Iowa State University, Ames and works at the Veterans Auditorium, Des Moines. Both Ken and Brenda are volunteer fire fighters and are studying to be Fire Inspectors. They have 2 children: Amanda Lee and Christopher Aaron. Amanda was born in Norfolk, VA and Christopher at the Great Lake Naval Base Hospital, Chicago, IL. Both children were born while their father was in the Navy. Amanda was recently confirmed at the United Methodist Church, Radcliffe where her parents are members. Christopher is a student in the Jewell, IA elementary school and is fighting asthma and dyslexia. Both children are in Scouts.

Schopp, Charles and Dorothy (Dean)

Charles B. Schopp was born 17 Mar 1891 at Elgin, IA, Fayette Co., IA. He was the son or Orlando Prentis and Sarah Jane (Gage) Schopp. Charles attended school in Elgin where he lived until he was 16 years old.

Charles first married Lily Becsey and they lived in Union Twp., Fayette Co. near West Union, IA. Later they moved to Spooner, Wl and then to Iron Mountain, Ml. They had 3 children: Melbert Leo of Castalia: Clifton who lived in Clinton, IA; and Frieda who lived in Aurora, IL.

Charles Schopp was married to Dorothy Dean on 27 Dec 1926 at Decorah, IA. Dorothy's parents were LeRoy and Edith (Burrows) Dean. Dorothy was a nurse before her marriage. Charles and Dorothy moved from the farm to the village of Castalia in 1936, where Charles ran a butcher shop/meat market. He was a livestock buyer and later operated a mink farm. Charles and Dorothy had a daughter who died in infancy.

Charles died suddenly of a heart attack on 14 Jul 1951 while sitting in his car that was parked on the main street of Castalia. He was 60 years old. Dorothy continued to live in Castalia until she became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah where she died. Charles and Dorothy are buried in the Centennial Cemetery.

Schopp, Melbert and LaVerna (Reincke)

Melbert Schopp was born 21 Jul 1912 in Union Twp., Fayette Co. near West Union, IA. He was the son of Charles and Lily (Becsey) Schopp. Melbert's grandparents were Orlando Prentis and Sarah Jane (Gage) Schopp. Melbert attended school in Spooner, Wl. He had a brother, Clifton and a sister, Frieda.

Melbert married LaVerna Reincke 15 Oct 1936 at the parsonage of St. John's Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Clayton Co., IA. LaVerna’s parents were Fred and Louise (Appel) Reincke. LaVerna was born 19 Jun 1916 at Postville, Allamakee Co., IA. LaVerna had 2 sisters and 3 brothers: Mardella (Reincke) Reckward - deceased; Arno - deceased; Arlene (Reincke) Lundt lives in Decorah; Fredrick, Jr. lives in Albuquerque, NM; and Delbert lives in Evansdale, IA.

Melbert (Buck) and LaVerna moved to Castalia. Bloomfield Twp., Winneshiek Co. where Melbert worked as a farm hand and truck driver. For 20 years they owned and operated the meat locker in Castalia. Melbert served as mayor of Castalia and as a member of the Fire Department. They were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia.

Melbert died 8 Jul 1993 at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville. LaVerna lives in Castalia. She is an active member of the WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) at Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoys dancing and playing cards with her friends.

Schopp, Orlando and Sarah (Gage)

Orlando Prentis Schopp was born 21 Oct 1859 near Ossian in Military Twp., Winneshiek Co., IA. He was the son of Michael and Lydia Schopp. Orlando had a brother, Wiley Schopp who later lived in Santa Maria, CA. He had two sisters, Louisa (Schopp) Clark and Mary Jane (Schopp) Crosby.
