Schissel, Alvin and Marian (Willson)

(Marian Schissel)

Marian Elizabeth Willson was the sixth of the 7 children of Leo and Mary (Hyberger) Willson: Gordon, Rita, Madelyn, Gretchen, Marian (of this story) and Dennis.

When Marian was 9 months old, she had mastoid surgery. Up to that time she had a lot of problems with her ears. The surgery was done at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, Wl. Years later her parents told Marian she was lucky to have survived the surgery.

Marian went to Hesper No. 4 school through the 8th grade. Her teachers included Phyllis Erickson and Bertha Simmonson. Marian went through all 8 grades with the same 4 classmates: Norman Leistikow, Neil Lovstuen, Shirley Stortz and Elaine Groth.

The Willsons lived on the Henry Hillman farm north of Decorah where Leo and Mary worked very hard to raise their children. In addition Leo played the saxophone for wedding dances. He earned enough money to buy a large sack of flour for Mary to bake bread, cakes and molasses cookies. There always was fresh apple butter for their bread.

Marian attended Decorah High School. The school bus would pick her up at 7:15 a.m. and bring her home at 4:15 p.m. She did not go out for sports, band or other extra-curricular activities because the bus was her only way home. Marian graduated in 1959. There were 150 in her class. That was the largest class to graduate from Decorah High School up until that time. After graduating from high school Marian attended the Paris Academy (a cosmetology school) in Cedar Rapids, IA. This was the first time she had ever been away from home. Marian developed eczema on her hands from the permanent solution and was forced to quit after 10 months. She then went to work on the surgical floor at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN. The hospital was so big that for the first week she got lost every morning on her way to work.

Marian met her future husband, Alvin Schissel, at a dance at Matter’s Ballroom when she was in high school. Alvin was the son of Paul and Angelia (Hageman) Schissel of Ft. Atkinson. They dated off and on for a couple of years and finally were married 23 Aug 1961 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock, IA.

When Alvin and Marian were married, his parents retired and moved to Calmar, Alvin and Marian then moved on to his parents farm. Their first child was Tina Marie.

In Apr 1963 Alvin and Marian moved to Appleton, Wl where Alvin went to electrician’s school and worked as an apprentice. Their second child wasTroy Gerhard, followed by Terry Anthony. In 1970-71 Alvin graduated from electrician’s school. He and Marian then moved to Rice Lake, Wl along with Marian’s brother, Gordon Willson, his wife Dorothy and their 6 children.

In Rice Lake they set up a plastics factory where they recycled plastic and made blown plastic film bags. It is known as “Shadow Plastics” and is still a very successful business today.  Alvin and Marian’s fourth child was Tiffany.

Tina married Greg Richter 16 Oct 1982. Greg was the son of Lawrence and Leonine (Demers) Richter. Tina and Greg had a son, Tyler Gregory before the marriage ended in divorce. In Mar 1994 Tina married Ron Derousseau, the son the Fred and Lucille Derousseau. Ron had 3 children from his first marriage: Andrew, Victoria and Benjamin.

Troy married Rebecca Lynn Guddis of Bruce, Wl. Rebecca is the daughter of Virginia Guddis. Troy and Rebecca have a son, Weston Dakota, and are expecting their second child.

Terry married Laura Leigh Law, daughter of Jack ana Carole Law of Chetek, Wl, in Dec 1991. They have 2 children: Alissa Aleigha and Jessica Lynn.

Alvin and Marian’s youngest child, Tiffany, is a junior at the Rice Lake High School. She is very active in extracurricular activities where she plays alto saxophone in the marching and concert band and is on the Pom-Pom Squad. Tiffany's squad won first place at the Citrus Bowl and at Nationals. She also is active at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Dobbie, Wl where the Schissels are members.

Alvin’s brother-in-law, Gordon, retired from the plastics business in the late 1980’s; Alvin retired in Dec 1991. Alvin’s sons Troy and Terry now own the business.
