Cora (Kjome) and Roy Ramlo on their 25th Wedding Anniversary.

Roy Ramlo was born 16 Oct 1896 to Peter Tarald Ramlo and Mary Elizabeth Bergeson in Hesper Twp. Roy grew to manhood on his father’s farm learning animal husbandry and perfecting his skills in agriculture under the excellent guidance of his father. He married Miss Cora Kjome (29 Apr 1898) daughter of Andrew and Clausine Kjome of Highland Twp. on 2 Sep 1918. Roy immediately ther eafter entered the U.S. Army together with Ray Smalley and James Kjome. The war was over before they could be sent overseas, and the three friends returned safely to their families. The following year the first of 4 sons was born. Roy and Cora rented farms in the area until removing to Spring Grove in 1930; they farmed just outside of town and raised their boys. Life on the farm was hard; there were always things that needed to be done, both indoors and out. During the planting and harvesting there were extra mouths to feed and Cora earned a reputation for her good cooking and her homebaked bread. Roy was strict with his boys and very particular about his animals and his tools. Everything had its time and place; the boys were brought up to take care of their tools and their work. They became strong and reliable men.

Cora made a warm and welcoming home for her family. Her own brothers and sisters and their children were most fond of her company. She had a sweet and gentle nature and gave generously of her affections to her family. Her two youngest boys, twins, were a great worry to her. Richard was sickly and had weak eyesight. Robert was stronger but had an accident and injured his leg and the sore did not heal well. With 2 sick children, the livestock, and the home to care for, there was more than enough to worry about. The older boys left home and joined the Navy during World War II. Another time of concern for the family. Both returned safely. Robert went off to Decorah to stay with his uncle George and go to Luther. He worked hard and paid his own way. He graduated and went on to become a research chemist in Los Angeles, CA. Dale and Donald moved to Austin and went to work at Hormels. The boys all did well. Richard went away to school, too.

Roy passed away 28 Dec 1951 and Cora moved from the farm to town. She went to work as a cook at the bowling alley in Spring Grove.

Cora loved to be with her family and was often visiting one or the other of her sons and her grandchildren. The boys often invited her to join them on their travels and she visited California and Florida and many other states. One of her favorite experiences was attending the Liberace show in Las Vegas. Cora was also a favorite among her nephews and nieces in Decorah and spent many weekends with them. They loved to hear her tell about her folks and especially about Grandpa Kjome. Sometimes she laughed and sometimes she cried and we laughed and cried with her. Cora passed away at her home in Spring Grove 9 Nov 1972.
