the Illinois Benedictine College, Lisle, IL from 1941 to 1945. He joined the Benedictine Order in 1945 and became Brother Sebastian. He now lives at the St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle. Rita  married John Edward Schmitt in 1943. They farmed one mile southwest of Ft. Atkinson and had 9 children: David, Mary, Michael, Thomas, Paul, Peter, Carl, Ann and Jeanne. Anthony Wenceslaus  married Colette Elsbernd in 1948. They farmed near Ridgeway, IA until they retired to Cresco. They have 10 children: Leo, Ruth, Roger, Rosemary, Mark, Germaine, Albert, Martha, Kathy and Lois. Raymond A. married Anna Mae Elsbernd in 1951. They farmed southwest of Ft. Atkinson in Jack-son Twp, Section 17 until they retired to Calmar. They have 9 children: Mary, Linus, Dennis, Janice, Geralyn, Connie, Steven, Donna and Diane. Theresa Mary  married Roman Aloysius Schmitt in 1952. They farmed south of Ft. Atkinson and had 11 children: Gerald, Barbara, Steven, Joan, Catherine, Dorothy, Margaret, Marie, Joseph, James and Robert. Jerome C. married Carlene Martin in 1958. They farmed west of New Hampton. They had 8 children: John, Joseph, Daniel, Rita, Joyce, Jerry, Jane and Joann. Margaret Mary  married James Nicholas Bentz 18 Jul 1959 in Calmar. They live in Dubuque, IA and have 3 children: Martin, John and Robert.

Kuhn, Anton and Anna (Ludwig)

Anton Kuhn was born 17 Oct 1870, the son of George and Josephine (Novotny) Kuhn. Anton’s siblings were: Joseph, Josephine, Mary and George. On 31 Jan 1893, Anton married Anna Ludwig. Anna was born 31 Oct 1872, the daughter of John and Mary (Mikota) Ludwig. Anna’s siblings were: John, Mary, Mathew, Barbara, Albert and Frank.

Anton and Anna came to this country as children with their parents. George who was from Germany and Josephine from Bohemia. John Ludwig was from Prussia and Mary Mikota from Moravia.

Anton and Anna lived and farmed about five miles west of Ft. Atkinson, IA. Sometime after 1928, the Kuhn family moved to Ft. Atkinson for 5 years and then back to the farm. Anton and Anna had 12 children: Albert (b. 26 Mar 1895)    married Barbara Shindelar; Andrew (b. 31 Aug 1896)    married Celia Shindelar; Edward (b. 21 Jul 1898) married Viola Shindelar; Anna (b. 9 Jul 1900) married Ludwig Semerad; Adolph (b. 12 Nov 1902) married Gertrude Tupy; Frances (b. 23 Dec 1904) married William Sheinek; Antoinette Marie (b. 4 Jan 1907 remained single and died 23 Apr 1939; Regina (b. 6 Aug 1909) married Adolph Hlubek; Clara (b. 6 Aug 1909) married Legor Meyer; Elizabeth (b. 13 Jan 1912) married Ed Berry; Paul (b. 8 Feb 1914) married Clara Busta; and Gertrude (b. 15 Jun 1917) married Louis Kurash.

George J. Kuhn was born on a farm south of Spillville in Calmar Twp, Winneshiek Co, IA 30 Dec 1864. He was the son of John A. and Margretha (Smith) Kuhn. His father was born 10 May 1828 and his mother was born 27 Dec 1837 at Pittsburgh, PA in Butler Co. George's brothers and sisters were: Joseph, Mary, Sabelka, Margaret (Maggie) Schneberger, Katherine Herold, Anna Schneberger, John C., Regina, and Barbara Schoeberl.

George married Mathilda “Tillie” Leuenberger 14 Jan 1890 in St. Clements Church near Spillville. She was born 15 May 1867 in Spillville. She was the daughter of Ulrich and Mary (Ess) Leuenberger. Her father and mother both were born in Switzerland. Mathilda's brothers and sisters were: Mary Slaight, Louis U., Emma Fisher, Barbara Allison, Agnes, Henry and John.

George and Mathilda had two children: Albert W. and Celia Katherine. Albert was born 23 Sep 1891 at his family’s country home near Spillville. He spent his boyhood days on the homestead with his parents. At the age of nine, he suffered from infantile paralysis. He died 12 Jan 1928 at home in Ft. Atkinson, IA and was buried at St. John’s Cemetery. Celia was born 13 Mar 1894 at home near Spillville. She went to school at Spillville and was married to John Rilling 14 Jun 1915. They had two children: J. Renald and Marie Mathilda.

George and Mathilda lived and farmed on the family farm south of Spillville. Upon their retirement in 1928, they moved to Ft. Atkinson. They were members of St. John's Catholic Church. George belonged to the Catholic Workman and Mathilda belonged to the Rosary Society.

George died at his home in Ft. Atkinson in 1952. He is buried at St. John's Cemetery. Mathilda died 14 Feb 1948 at home and was buried 17 Feb 1948, also at St. John’s Cemetery.

Kuhn, James A. and Alice (Riehle)

James A. Kuhn, the son of Joseph P and Mary (Ludwig) Kuhn, was born 25 Jul 1908 on the family farm in Winneshiek Co. He attended St. Wenceslaus School in Spillville, IA. James married Alice R. Riehle, daughter of Will and Christina (Soukup) Riehle, on 14 Sep 1931 at
