(Shileny) Mikota. Jan farmed until 1890. From time to time, he also worked as a stonemason. In 1891 he moved his family to Spillville where until 1899 he conducted a farm machinery business. A photo of the shop taken in 1893 shows the building covered with posters of an Indian medicine show. Jan and Anna commissioned an oil painting of the Blessed Virgin for the chapel in Zverkovice, and donated statues of Our Lady of Lourdes to churches in Little Turkey, Protivin and Spillville.

Anna died 1 Mar 1905; Jan died 22 Aug 1908.

Jan John” and Anna had 13 children: John, Frank, Joseph, Mary, Vaclav, Anna, Joseph, Victoria, Mary, Eleanor, Robert, Margaret and Josephine. All were born on the family farm in Sumner Twp.

John Louis (b. 31 Dec 1858) married Rose Suchan on 31 May 1881. Rose was born in Bohemia on 6 May 1862 to John and Catherine Faber Suchan. They had nine children, all born in rural Manly, IA: John Isaac (b. 14 Jul 1882) married Emma Kovarik. Rose (b. 1883) died in infancy. Mary (b. 25 Dec 1885) married Charles Conlee. Rose Anna (b. 7 Mar 1887) married George Fluber. Louis (birthdate unknown) died at age four. Emma Irene (b. 25 Dec 1891) married John Fisher. Stella (b. 11 May 1893) married Benjamin Novak. Louise (b. 5 May 1894) married Edward Herold. Helen (born 22 Jan 1896) married Elias Mayer.

Frank John (b. 9 Jul 1861) married Eleanor Sobolik on 16 Jan 1883. Eleanor was born 2 Feb 1863 to Joseph and Catherine Slepicka Sobolik. They had ten children, all born in rural Chickasaw Co: Frank John (b. 4 Feb 1884) married Caroline Bouska. John Joseph (b. 22 Feb 1886) married Mary Pecinovsky. Eleanor Elizabeth (b. 13 Apr 1888) married Robert Lukes. Mary B. (b. 24 Jun 1890) married Adolph Zahasky. Barbara Anna (b. 28 Feb 1893) married Vincent Polashek. Rose Victoria (b. 18 Jun 1895) was a nun known as Sister Mary Majella. Wenceslaus Louis (b. 9 Oct 1897) married Anna Vandas. Joseph Charles (b. 10 Oct 1900) remained single. Adella Lillian (b. 3 May 1905) married Joseph Kerian. Robert (b. in Jun 1908) died in infancy.

Joseph Jacob (b. 2 Aug 1863), Mary (birthdate unknown) and Vaclav (birthdate unknown) died during an epidemic. They were buried in a common grave.

Anna was born 1 Oct 1866. On 4 May 1886 she married Anton Svehla born in 1866 to Frank and Katerine (Bruha) Swehla. They had five children, all born in Calmar Twp: Anna Cecelia (b. 13 Jul 1887) married Charles Moudry. Anton (b. Feb 1890) married Rose Shevik. Agnes Eleanor (18 Jan 1893-1902. Louis (b. 10 Dec 1895) married Eleanor Herold. Paul James (b. 14 Sep 1906) married Thelma Johnson.

Joseph F. was born 5 May 1868. On 3 Jun 1890 at Ft. Atkinson, he married Barbara Kortan born 28 Sep 1871 to Joseph and Anna (Rezec) Kortan. They had ten children, all born in Sumner Twp: Joseph Anton (b. 27 Jun 1891) married Albina Kalishek. Frank John (b. 4 Jun 1893) married Mayme Holub. Cecelia Mary (b. 18 Mar 1896) died at four years of age. Agnes M. (b. 5 Jan 1898) married Albert Jarosh. Cecelia Anna (b. 4 Aug 1901) married Leonard Humpal. George E. (b. 17 Sep 1904) married

Augusta Houdek. Hattie Marie (b. 17 Sep 1904) married Alvis Jirak. Barbara P (b. 18 Jan 1907) married Roy Novak. Viola Margaret (b. 5 Jul 1910) died at age seven. Helen Clara (b. 12 Aug 1914) married Carroll Mayrand.

Victoria Mary was born 21 Dec 1870. On 11 Jun 1889 she married John Vana born 4 May 1868 near Pisek, Bohemia. They had nine children, all born in Omaha: George (b. 31 Mar 1890) married (1) Josephine Mathaus and (2) Arzella Rabb. Victoria (b. 13 Jun 1892) married John Voller. Barbara (b. 21 Jun 1894) died at age 12. Anna (b. 21 Jul 1896) remained single. John (b. 14 Jan 1900) married Rose Milczski. Mary (b. 17 May 1902) remained single. Joseph (b. 23 Dec 1902) remained single. Georgina Mari (b. 18 Sep 1908) married Robert Evans. Celia (b. 11 May 1911) died young.

Mary Teresa was born 21 Jul 1872. On 8 Aug 1893 she married Albert Trular who was born 1 Jan 1874 in Steel Co. MN to Anton and Anna (Podhajsky) Trular. They had three children, all born in St. Paul, MN: Adella (b. 17 Mar 1897) married Paul Zafke. Otto (b. 7 Sep 1900) briefly married, but died childless. Marcella (b. 6 Jan 1907) remained single.

Robert Alois was born 27 Mar 1877. On 24 Apr 1900 he married Mary E. Andera born 22 Jun 1881 to Charles and Barbara (Dostal) Andera. They had eight children: Robert Charles (b. 3 Aug 1901 in Karlin (formerly Tremont), MO) married Arzella Raezak. Charles Matthew (b. 21 Apr 1903 in Karlin) married Anna Pavlovec. Otilia Mary (b. 19 Feb 1905 in Protivin, IA) married Mark Walsh. Sidonia Josephine (b. 18 Mar 1909 in Protivin) married Alvin Klimesh. Celestine Francis (b. 6 Mar 1911 in Protivin) married Helen Polansky. Emil Anthony (b. 19 Jul 1914 in Spillville, IA) married Marcella Herold. Cyril Methodius (b. 20 Jan 1917 in Spillville) married Irene Dolan. Godfrey Martin (b. 8 Nov 1919 in Spillville) married Regina Bily.

Margaret was born 1 Jan 1881. On 18 Jun 1901 she married Anton Balik born 9 Jun 1880 to Wenzil and Mary (Jaros) Balik. They had eight children, all born in Spillville: Margaret Barbara (b. 9 May 1902) remained single. Viola Mary (b. 27 Mar 1904) married Leo Carney. Irma (born 9 Feb 1907) married George Ebert. Marcella Anna (b. 31 Jul 1909) remained single. Mildred Mary (b. 28 Jul 1911) remained single. Stanley Anton (b. 10 Dec 1915) married Marie Budke. Robert John (tr $2Mar 1919) married Helen Bouska. Dolores Mary married Clarence Brom.

Josephine Elizabeth was born 21 Mar 1884. On 1 Jun 1909 she married Joseph Kapinos, the son of Anton and Mary (Stadle) Kapinos. Irma Mary, their only child, died in infancy.

In 1890, after his older children had married and left home, John and Anna turned the farm over to Joseph and moved to Manly, where their oldest son lived. Within a year they were back amongst their friends in Spillville where, across the street from his home, John opened up a farm implement shop which he ran until 1899. Anna died on 16 Mar 1906; John on 22 Aug 1908. At the end of 1994, their descendants numbered in excess of 1,275. Of these, less than 150 were deceased.
