Heggen, Tjeran and Mae (Anderson)

(Charlotte Wilkins Lee)

Mae Anderson born 2 May 1900 married Tjeran Heggen born 8 Sep 1908. They lived in Renwick, IA before moving to Decorah about 1950.

Tjeran was an oil distributor for Standard Oil Co. Tjeran’s oil truck could be seen parked in front of a home with a hose running to a house where the oil tank for the furnace was being filled. Cookie their dog would wait patiently in the cab of the truck.

Tjeran and Mae were very active at the First Lutheran Church. One could find Tjeran selling popcorn Friday nights in front of Rosel's Pharmacy for the Lions Club.

Mae died 20 June 1982 and is buried in the Lake Lutheran Cemetery about 4 miles south of Renwick. Tjeran and Mae had one child: Alan.

Alan Tjeran married Jo Hamburg born 28 Aug 1936. She graduated from Luther College in elementary education and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Toledo. Jo works for Lutheran Social Services in Milwaukee, Wl.

Alan was on the Varsity Football and Basketball teams in Decorah High School. In his junior year, during the last football game, Alan was tackled in such a way that his leg was broken. Unfortunately that curtailed his playing basketball most of that year. Both the team and Alan, plus their fans, were disappointed.

Alan graduated from Luther College and Luther Seminary. He is a Lutheran minister and has served as assistant to the Bishop of the Michigan District of the former ALC. He is presently serving as assistant to the Bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod ELCA.
