Mary Ann (Bucknell) Greenslade came to this country with her parents Robert and Mary Ann (Monder) Bucknell when she was 3 years old. They settled on a farm near Decorah. Mary Ann attended the rural school near her home, sometimes walking 2 miles over the rugged country trails. During the 45 years Richard and Mary farmed in Canoe Twp the couple experienced the hardships of being burned out of two farm homes. Each time Richard and Mary started over with the few remaining household goods they were able to salvage from the flames. In 1920 the couple purchased a home in Bluffton where Richard died two years later. Mary remained in her home for 21 years. She raised chickens and maintained a large garden.

A huge family reunion was held every summer at her home in Bluffton to help Mary celebrate her birthday. In 1944 at age 91 she moved to Cresco to make her home with her daughter Emma Burgess. Mary and Richard were life-long members of the Methodist Church. Mary was exceptionally well for her advanced age until the time of her death at 97 years. Her daughter Myrtle Gertrude (Greenslade) Harvey was also 97 when she died.

At the time of Mary’s death six of her seven children survived her, also 168 other living descendants, including 46 grandchildren, 117 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
