In 1964 he was the Instrumental Music Instructor at North Winneshiek Community School north of Decorah, IA, remaining in that position for 24 years-until his retirement in 1988. He was then employed on a full-time, then part-time basis at Usgaard & Smith Sales & Service in Decorah.

Bernhard and Carol Gluth

Bernhard has been the Assistant Director of the Luren Singing Society since 1972 and has enjoyed composing and arranging some of their musical selections. He was elected the President of the Norwegian Singers Association of America-Midwest Division in the summer of 1994 prior to the 1996 Sangerfest in Decorah.

Carol Ann Ehler was born near Castalia, IA the daughter of Bernard William and Signe (Borness) Ehler. She attended Calmar High School and graduated in 1957. She has been employed at First Lutheran Church and Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, Luther College, Monona Wire Corporation, Northeast Iowa Mental Health Center and Sibbald Chapman Burns Counseling Services Ltd., Decorah.

Bernhard and Carol are parents of 3 children: Janann, Kevin and Kaarin. Janann married Loren Stortz in 1981. They are parents of Megan Elizabeth and Carl Virgil Stortz. This marriage ended in divorce. Janann then married Carl King. They are the parents of Mollie Carol Virginia and Olivia Janann. Janann is a social worker with Lutheran Social Services and Carl is employed at Lang’s Dairy Equipment. Kevin is unmarried and lives in Rochester, MN where he is Assistant Manager at the Kahler Hotel. Kaarin married Marvin Sears of Des Moines, IA. Kaarin is employed as Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Kirke-Van Orsdal Insurance brokerage firm. Marvin is employed at the Bob Allen Companies of Des Moines.

Goettelman, Philipp and Fransiske (Linzenmeyer)

Philipp Goettelman was born 15 Jul 1831 at Meistratzheim, Lower Alsace, Germany and emigrated to Canada in 1857. Fransiske Linzenmeyer was born 20 Jul 1839 at Colmar, Upper Alsace and emigrated to

Canada in 1846. They were married 15 May 1859 at Siebringville, Canada. They came to Canoe Twp. in 1860. Philipp and Fransiske had 6 children. Fransiske died in an accident 13 May 1882. A rain storm had come up on their way home from town. Philipp drove the horses right into a shed. Fransiske hit her head on the top of the doorway. Philipp married a widow Marie Gunter. She was born 9 Feb 1867 in Meistratzheim. Philipp adopted her 2 children. Philipp died 8 May 1919. Marie died 13 Jan 1939. They were buried in St. Benedict's Cemetery.

Phillip Goettelman, born 10 Feb 1860 in Canada. He married Anna Tindreholdt. They had no children but adopted Herb Kolegraph. Phillip died 11 Aug 1917 at Wahpeton, ND.

Joseph Goettelman was born 29 Jun 1861 in Canoe Twp. He married Rose Stortz. Rose was born 25 Oct 1862. They had 3 children: Clara, married Philip Kolegraph; Grace, married Julian Arneson; and William, died at age 10.

Joseph died 25 Jan 1931 and Rose died 1 Jan 1935. Both were buried at St. Benedict’s Cemetery.

Samuel Goettelman was born 25 Jan 1863 and married Emma Noecker. Emma was born 5 May 1867. Their son Charles married Mabel Bolger. Sam died 26 Jun 1941 and Emma died 11 Apr 1938. They were buried at Phelps Cemetery.

Frank Xayer Goettelman was born 21 Jan 1865. He married Lena (?). They had no children. Frank died 19 Sep 1930 in Colorado.

Ludwig (Louis') Goettelman was born 16 Dec 1867. He married Lizzie Stortz. She was born 7 Oct 1872. They had no children. Louis died 3 Oct 1900. Lizzie died 25 Feb 1953. They were buried at Canoe Cemetery.

Wilhelm (William) Goettelman was born 25 Jul 1871 and married Anne Linzenmeyer. They had no children. They died at St. Paul, MN.
