Lutheran Church. Kari Quil was born 25 Jul 1848 in Norway and came to America in 1856. Haagen Evenson Fristad died at his home in Calmar Twp. 30 Jan 1929, one of the oldest of Winneshiek County’s pioneers.

Their children were: Rangnild (25 Dec 1866) married R. Wheatman, Even (18 Nov 1868) died in infancy, Marta (20 Sep 1870) married Gilbert Syverson, Berta Maria (23 May 1873) married A. Wheatman, Karl Edvard (10 Dec 1876), Julia (7 Apr 1878), Charolina (31 Dec 1880) married Charles Vine, Henrietta Matilda (2 Feb 1883) married L.O. Olson, Clara (2 Feb 1883) twin-died in infancy, and Even Olavus (21 Mar 1885).

Julia married Helge “Henry” Gullickson 15 May 1895. Henry Gullickson died 12 Jul 1920 and Julia died 17 Aug 1961. The Gullickson house was at 501 Decorah Avenue. To them were born: Charlotte Clarissa (20 Nov 1896) was baptized 25 Dec 1896. She married Gerhard Johnson 24 Jun 1922 and died 20 Jul 1987. (See separate article) Agnes Ruth Melinda (11 Dec 1898) was baptized 8 Jan 1899. She married Rev. Wilbur Allen 15 Jun 1969 and died 15 Mar 1973. Helmer Gerhard (31 Oct 1900) was baptized 25 Nov 1900. He married Hazel Knutson 16 May 1928 and died 17 Sep 1980.

Frye, Frank and Maude (Bucknell)

Frank Frye was born in Winneshiek Co. 31 Dec 1881. He was the son of G.H. and Anna Adelaide Freie. His father (1839) and his mother (1841) were born in Germany. They were married there in 1860. Frank’s brothers and sisters were: J.B. Heinrich, Anna Adelheid, Ann M., Herman Heinrich, Diena, Gerhard Heinrich, Friedrich Willem, and Francies. All of the children, except Frank and Francies, were born in Germany. They settled in Glenwood Twp. and after some time changed the spelling of the family name from “Freie” to "Frye."

Frank and Maude (Bucknell) Frye May 14, 1901

Frank married Maude Bucknell 14 May 1901 at Burr Oak, IA. Their children were Archie and Sadie Rae (both of whom died in infancy), Jennie Lynn and Kenneth L. They were lifelong residents of Winneshiek Co. They farmed near Burr Oak for several years and also in Glenwood Twp. Later they moved to Hesper, IA where they owned and operated a general store for 15 years, and then moved to Decorah in 1931 until 1936. They settled on a farm in Decorah Twp. and farmed there until his death in Mar 1959. Maude died in Mar of 1960.

Jennie was married at 16 and moved to Spring Grove, MN. She had 2 sons: Ronald and Wallace. She died at age 59.

Kenneth was born in 1917 at Hesper and lived there until 1931 when he moved with his parents to Decorah. In 1936 they moved to the family farm in Decorah Twp. where he resided until his death. He married Helen Weston (1917) on 6 Jul 1940 at Decorah and they lived on the family farm 50 years until Kenneth’s death in 1990. They had 4 children: David (m. Karen Iverson) had 3 children: Weston, Julie and Lisa, all residing in Cedar Rapids. David has been a bindery foreman for a printing firm for 30 years and has 2 grandchildren. They have been lifelong members of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Gary (m. Geraldine Rilling) has 3 children: Dean (m. Lori Larson) has 2 children: Kayla and Kyle. DeAnn (m. Marty Kuehner) and Daniel (m. Tracy Holthaus). All live in Decorah. They are the 3rd generation to live on the family farm. Gary is a self-employed carpenter. Linda (m. Robert Johnson) is a registered nurse and living in Rochester, MN. She has worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for 30 years. Robert is a dispatcher for the Minnesota Highway Department. They have 2 children: William Robert (m. Lorie) and Elizabeth (m. Kris Clobes). Virginia (m. Ronald Goodyear) has one child, Russell Elliott. They live in Decorah. Virginia is a production line worker at Calmar Foods.

Fulsaas, Ole and Olaug (Nerdalen)

Ole Herbrandson Fulsaas (1801-31 Aug 1877, Numedal, Norway) married Olaug P Nerdalen (29 Apr 1809-15 Feb 1890, Eggedal, Tweiten) in 1829 at the Rollag Church. She was the daughter of Peder Ellevsen and Ragnild Nilsdtr of Aasland. Ragnild came to America in 1849 when she was 86 years old.

Ole and Olaug emigrated to America in 1848 with their family sailing on thePorsgtund to Clinton Twp., Rock Co., Wl and then to Madison Twp., Winneshiek Co. Both are buried at Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery. Their children are Herbrand (17 Mar 1830-20 Apr 1891), Ragnhild (20 Jul 1832-9 Dec 1890), Peder (3 Jul 1839-28 Jul 1913), Narve (17 Nov 1842-15 Nov 1886), (Narve was buried at Berrien Springs, Ml at Madison Lutheran Cemetery.) and Ole (14 Jun 1845-17 Oct 1871)

Ole H. Fulsaas had 6 brothers; Narve, Niri, Viil, Herbrand, Kittel, and Halvor. Olaug had sisters that came to America: Ragna (Kittelson), Ingeri (grandmother of George, Eli, Emmick, Harold and Peter Ellickson), Ingeborg (Tiegen) (mother of Aase Haugen) and Helga (m. Gundbjorn Olsen Moen).

In 1852 Ole and Olaug came to Madison Twp., Winneshiek Co. Ole purchased 40 acres of land - all that he could buy at that time. His sons also bought land. (He
