Barbara Berg’s twin sister is Phyllis Marie. They were born pre-maturely at the Decorah Hospital. They were baptized at the hospital and remained there for several weeks before being brought home. When they came home they were both able to fit nicely into a single baby basket which Barbara still owns. Phyllis and Barbara were both married in I960, 4 weeks apart. Their mother, a self-taught seamstress and tailor, sewed their wedding dresses. She became well known for her skills in sewing and altering clothes. Barbara married Donald L. Berg of Viroqua, Wl 4 Sep 1960. Phyllis married Dale Quass of Ossian, IA 1 Oct 1960.

Barbara worked following high school at the national offices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. This group merged in 1960 and became part of the American Lutheran Church. Barbara continued to work in the ALC's offices in the Youth Department following her marriage while her husband finished his seminary training. They have one son, John Daniel Berg, now living in Ames, IA. There are 2 granddaughters, Heather Victoria and Christen Myranda.

Barbara's husband, Pastor Donald L. Berg, is a graduate of Luther College-1956 and Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul-1961. He has served pastorates at Paullina, Osage and Randall-Story City, IA, plus several interim pastorates in northeast IA while living in Decorah from 1980-1987. He has served Moland Lutheran Church, rural Kenyon, MN since Nov 1987. In addition he is chaplain part-time at Kenyon Sunset Home. He has sung with the Luren Singers since 1982 and has served as Corresponding Secretary both for the Luren group and for the Norwegian Singers Association of America. He is currently editor-publisher of Sanaer-Hilsen. the magazine of the NSAA. He is known as a translator, genealogist and church historian, having translated congregational minutes and other documents for many congregations. He is currently involved in the research for writing the first comprehensive history of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, the church to which the Hamre family has belonged almost all the years of their lives in this area.

The Hamre farm reached Century Farm status in 1964. A couple of years later Peter Hamre suffered a heart attack and was forced to quit farming. The farm was sold out of the family to long-time neighbors the Ronald Halversons and Peter and Margreth moved into Decorah to a home in Minowa Heights. Peter worked for some years after retirement from farming with the Olson-Fjelstul Furniture Store and Funeral Home while Margreth continued her seamstress work.

Barbara attended Iowa State University while she and her husband were in Randall and Story City. She graduated in 1977 with a double major in Interior Design and Textile Craft Design with an Honors Program in Scandinavian Design. Barbara studied weaving at Valdres Husflid Skol in Fagernes, Norway in 1980. She worked for 5 years at Vanberia in Decorah. She worked in Nevada, IA and St. Paul, MN as an Interior Designer and currently owns her own business-Barbara Berg Weavers-designing and weaving liturgical pieces such as pastors’ stoles, church paraments, tapestries, funeral palls, etc., upon commission.

The Bergs trace their roots to Valdres, Hallingdal, and Sogn on Barbara’s side and to the Lom-Skjaak area of Gudbrandsdal and Bod_ (with one grandfather having come to Norway from Lulea, Sweden) on Donald's side. The Bergs have visited Norway and Sweden on several occasions and look forward to returning again.

In 1994 the Bergs sold the house they had been purchasing from Barbara’s parents in Minowa Heights and purchased a house previously owned by Phil and Marian Johson at 407 Leif Erikson Drive, just one block from the Luther College campus. They will move to Decorah upon retirement but have a basement apartment in the house while they rent out the main part of the house to Dan and Natalie Grossman (Natalie is Luren’s accompanist at present.)
