George Vernon was born 23 Jun and married Evelyn Bresbrain. Evelyn Beatrice was born 19 Dec 1915 and married John Paul Boland.

George and Helen owned and operated a farm about 2 miles southeast of Locust in Pleasant Twp. It was here .hat they raised their family. They were members of St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust. When they retired from farming they moved to Decorah where George became a busy, self-employed carpenter.

George died 30 Nov 1938 and Helena died 17 Nov 1954. Both are buried at Phelps Cemetery

Barth, Grant and Vivian (Erickson)

Grant Barth was born 10 Oct 10,1919 in Pleasant Twp., the son of Roy and Nellie (Buer) Barth. Roy was born 20 Mar 1894 in Pleasant Twp. He lived his entire life in Winneshiek Co. Roy farmed in the Locust area and also hauled cream and did carpenter work. He married Nellie Buer 7 Nov 1918. Nellie crocheted and did sewing for her children and grandchildren. She was always there for them as was Roy. Nellie was born 13 Aug 1897 and died 15 May 1951. Roy died 1 Oct 1957.

Grant had 2 sisters - June who married Palmer Anderson 7 Apr 1940 and Rosemar who married Glen Rilling 23 Sep 1944. Rosemar died 12 Oct 1992.

Grant married Vivian Erickson 5 Nov 1939 at the Locust parsonage. Vivian was born 25 Oct 1921 to Oscar and Marie (Sorenson) Erickson. Oscar was born 5 Sep 1882 in Winneshiek Co. When he was 24, he went to South Dakota where he filed a homestead application according to homestead records at the National Archives. He build a 10 X 12 frame house with gable and rubberoid (sic) roof, window, door and floor. He proved his homestead on 7 Feb 1908 and paid $.50 an acre for a total of $80.00. Oscar returned to Winneshiek Co. and married Marie Sorenson 14 Oct 1908. Marie was born 27 Feb 1886 at Sunnfjord, Norway. She came to America in 1895 with her parents when she was 9 years old. Marie died 6 Mar 1936. She left 8 children. Her children remember the winter of 1936 not only for her death, but also because it was very cold with lots of snow. Oscar died 23 Aug 1967. They are buried at Springwater Cemetery as well as are both sets of parents and Oscar’s grandparents.

Vivian had 2 sisters - Edith Hjelmeland (d. 2 Jul 1991) and Leona Roher - and 5 brothers - Chester (d. 26 Dec 1992), Harold, Wallace (d. 23 Mar 1992), Arthur and Merlan (d. 16 Jan 1947).

Grant and Vivian lived in the Locust and Decorah area. Grant hauled cream, farmed and did carpenter work. Vivian worked at Luther College for 3 years, had the A & W Drive-In for a while and then owned and operated Ronnie’s Cafe for 26 years. They made the famous 'Ronnie Rolls’ and did all their baking starting at 1:30 in the morning. Grant made all the pies and doughnuts. Vivian made the rolls, cookies and bars. Many times they would start baking at 4:30 the night before and bake the rolls if they had big orders. They made as many as 90 dozen rolls a night. Grant and Vivian are now retired.
