Anderson, Trond and Guri (Oleson) Skogstad

(Dorothy Anderson)

“Trond Anderson, his brother, Halvor, and sister, Marie (Mrs. Ivor Opdahl), along with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andres Skogstad, emigrated from Skogstad, Norway (now the Hugali Pensponge) to Springfield Twp., Winneshiek Co., IA.” This historical information was provided to Jesse Wepler by Trond’s daughter, Julia Nelson.

Since Rev. Ulrik Vilhelm Koren insisted Trond go by the name Skogstad, this is the name on their tombstone: Trond A. Skogstad, born 1843, died 9 Dec 1917 - Guri A. Skogstad, born 22 Jul 1852, died 9 Jan 1929. Other family members buried at Washington Prairie Cemetery are Martin T Skogstad (Anderson), 26 Mar 1883-11 Oct 1944; Anders Trond Skogstad, 25 Jul 1813-5 Feb 1888; Mrs. A. Trondson, 22 Mar 1807-17 Nov 1890; Trond’s brother, Halvor Anderson, who was a shoemaker in Nordness, 24 Jun 1840-22 Sep 1921; and Gilbert A. Skogstad, 29 Jan 1879-20 May 1943. Trond and Guri also had 2 daughters who died in infancy.

Guri Oleson (Oledtr. Rudi) emigrated from Vestre Slidre, Valders, Voss, Norway, the home of her parents and brother and sister. She and her infant son, Ole, came to New York in 1873, traveling to Milwaukee, Wl, then to Springfield Twp., where she married Trond. She lived on this farm for 51 years. They had 5 sons and 4 daughters: Ole (1873-1949), Anton, Gilbert, Theodore (1882-1953), Martin, Julia (1894-1976) and Inga (1890-1960).

Guri seldom conversed in English. Trond and Guri's children were bilingual. Her grandchildren enjoyed it when she taught them to count and say words in Norwegian. They fondly remember her hooked rugs, Norwegian handiwork, flower gardens and homemade ice cream and bread plus her good humor and laughter.
