Jenkins, Myron Russell -

Memorial services for Myron Russell Jenkins of Blue Ridge, Az. were held March 21,

2008 at the Blue Ridge Community Church with Rev. Dr. Ramon Daniel officiating.

Myron was born in Taylor County on September 21, 1923 to George Edward Jenkins

and Mable Mae Barnes Jenkins. He had four sisters, Edith, Lillian, Mary and Jenny

Faye and one brother, George Edward Jenkins, Jr. He grew up in Iowa and graduated

from Lenox High School in 1941. He was drafted and served in World War II. He

wanted to be an aviation cadet in the Air Force, but was turned down because of flat

feet. When discharged, he settled in the Los Angeles area and started a business

that manufactured and installed marine electrical equipment. He was so successful

that he was able to retire at age 45. It was then that he and his family moved to

Parker, Az.

He met his wife, Marie, 57 years ago and they have one son, who passed away, and

two daughters, Jana and Carol. They have been blessed with four grandchildren.

Myron's favorite hobby was building and flying experimental aircraft. He built

four airplanes in his lifetime with his last plane certified in 2007. Myron was

consulted by other flying experimental aircraft builders from across the country.

He began his aviation career in the early 1980s. He built his first plane, a Glasair

RG, from a Glasair kit. These kits were the first to be offered to the public in

almost totally pre-molded form. The builder is able to use his own ideas and

materials when building the plane, in everything from the instrumental panel

to the seats in the two-passenger plane. It cruises at about 270 miles per hour.

At the same time he was building the plane, he was also learning

to fly. He soloed and passed his private written test before deciding that

he could not concentrate on building and flying, so he gave up flying

until he finished his airplane. When the plane was finally completed

and ready for its test flight, the time limit on his private written test

had expired, so he had to take the test again before he could get his

license. When he began flying his first plane, he only had about 20

hours total flying time. He quickly acquired a sense of security in

his home-built plane because the plane responded so quickly to the

controls.

Myron traveled to air shows all over the country, bringing home

numerous grand champion awards. One of the most prestigious awards

was the Experimental Aircraft Association Wright Brothers Award for

a Glasair III plane in Dayton, Ohio in 1992. This award is equal to

the Emmys awarded to television stars.

Myron has been a full-time resident at The Mountain at Starlight

Pines in Blue Ridge for the past six years. In April, 2007, he was

named volunteer of the month for the Blue Ridge Fire Department.

He grew a vegetable garden each year and generously shared with

other members of the fire department and the neighborhood.

Manroe, Thelma (Darlene) Moffett -

Memorial services for Thelma "Darlene" Manroe, age 81 of Gravity, who died

April 3, 2008 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center will be held at a later

date, to be announced. Interment will be at Lenox Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that be directed to the family

for the blind. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at

www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements are entrusted

to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Thelma "Darlene" Moffett Manroe was born June 28, 1926 on a farm one mile

west of Clearfield in Ringgold County, the oldest child of Lola Elberta "Neville"

Moffett and James Edward Moffett. She was baptized in the Clearfield

Methodist Church. She was raised in the Clearfield and Lenox area, attending school

in Clearfield where she played basketball. She always looked forward to the

school and seeing old friends, whom she stayed in contact with and visited as

she was able.

She met Weldon "Jie" Manroe at a local establishment. They were married

October 23, 1942 in Albany, Missouri. They worked for Hale's shows, where

Jie ran the merry-go-round and Darlene manned the ticket booth and ran the

kiddy cars. When Jie was called to serve his country in WW II, Darlene went

with him to the military bases in the states, including California and Carolina.

Jie was deployed to France and Germany until Germany surrendered. When Jie

was deployed overseas, Darlene returned to Lenox to be with her family.

They had worked out a code she would know he was well and the general area where

he was stationed. Amazingly they were cleaver enough so the letters were mostly

untouched by the military sensors. Upon returning to Lenox they again worked

for Hale's shows and Jie later worked for Western Telephone as a lineman. In 1952

they moved to the Kansas City, Missouri area where Jie worked for the gas company

for 30 years. When he retired they moved to Gravity, Iowa to be close to their

families and friends. Jie was the love of her life.

Darlene loved her family and was the first to offer assistance to any and all who

needed it. She had a great fondness for animals and had a cat most of her life.

She held a particular fondness for a golden retriever "Stormy" that is a companion

to a family member. She would go to visit him and would request for him to visit her

at her home or the nursing home, she said she just wanted to love him, but she

gave to him more than she could ever receive.

Darlene adopted her nieces and nephews as her own and loved to entertain them

in her home in Sugar Creek, Missouri during summer school vacations. Her

family has many fond memories of those times.

Darlene had many hobbies and was a very talented candle maker. She also did bead

work and crocheted. She loved to play cards and games and visit with her family.

She was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and rarely missed watching a game.

She also had a fondness for music, especially big band and country western.

Left to cherish her memory are her two brothers, Bill Moffett and wife Shirley

of Littleton, Colorado and Earl Moffett and wife Anna Mae of Thermal,

California, sister-in-law Wanda Manroe of Kansas City, as well as many nieces,

nephews, relatives, and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, James and Lola Moffett, Her husband

Jie Manroe in 1984, her sister Delores Ambrose and her husband Jack Ambrose,

brother James Edward Moffett Jr., Sister-in-law Thelma Moffett, Brother-in-law

Bob Manroe and his wife Bonnie, a nephew Gary Moffett a niece Christy Manroe

and a brother-in-law Charley Manroe.

She grew up near Gravity with her sister, Mildred, and brother, Oliver, and

Miller, Marvin James -

Funeral services for Marvin Miller, age 53, of Lenox, who died Friday, May 23, 2008

at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha will be held Wednesday, May

28, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox. Visitation will be

Tuesday .at the Ritchie Funeral Home from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends

from 5 to 7. Interment will be held at the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. In lieu

of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Lance Armstrong's

"Livestrong" Cancer Campaign. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at

www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the

Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Marvin James Miller was born August 5, 1954, in Corning, Iowa. He was the first of

two children born to Benne and Gerda Miller. Marvin graduated from the Lenox High

School in 1972. He began farming with his father Benne in 1973 when he bought his

Grandparent's farm. Marvin married Karla Figgins in 1973 and they had two daughters,

Brandie Miller and Suzanne Sulzer. He was very proud of his two daughters.

Then in 1983 Marvin met the love of his life Georgia Collins and on November 10th, 1984

they were married. Marvin and Georgia owned and operated a Farm west of Lenox.

Farming and livestock kept Marvin very busy and he enjoyed the many challenges that

come with the business. His livestock were more than just animals to him and he treated

many of them like pets, particularly his favorite White Park.

Though farming was his life, Marvin had many other interests. He had a hidden passion

for science and astronomy. He spent countless hours looking at the moon, stars and

planets with his telescope and even conducted a study on sun spots. Many hours were

spent outside in the garden with his wife Georgia tending and watching over his

favorite flowers and vegetables. He loved spending time doing detailed restoration

work on his collections of guns, toy farm machinery, and his classic cars.

There was a lot of pride when he restored his Grandfather's Minneapolis Moline tractor.

Everyone could see his enthusiasm when he shared them at local shows and parades for all

to enjoy. He especially loved his 1964 Ford Galaxy 500. He purchased it as a senior in high

school and has been showing is ever since.

He was a very spontaneous person and loved doing things spur of the moment. He

enjoyed taking short trips to explore Iowa and other states near by. Many times he would

take the long way home just see new things. Often he would stop to observe others crops

or check on his own. He loved fireworks, working with his father on his farm, and making

trips to Muscatine and selling the melons from their flatbed. Marvin looked at all of

God's creation with awe and wonder, and had a zeal for all things new. If it was new he had

to try it, especially when it came to food. He was a life long learner and always enjoyed

reading about something new and shared his knowledge with others.

He loved to 'conversate' with anyone and everyone. He spent many hours solving the

problems of the world over a cup of coffee. He loved being with his friends and we know

he is already missed.

He was very proud of his German heritage. He took the time to visit and get to know

his German relatives by going to Germany and Austria and always made it a point to stay

in touch with all of his many relatives. He has left a part of himself with all of them. Marvin

will be remembered and thought of by many.

Throughout his life he had met many health challenges, but he endured through them all

with a positive outlook. He was never resentful about the things he had to endure, he was only

grateful for the longer lease on life that he was granted.

Left to cherish Marvin's memory are his wife Georgia of Lenox, IA; daughter Brandie

Miller of Des Moines, IA; daughter Suzanne Sulzer and husband Bryan of Dubuque,

IA; sister Shirley Miller and husband Jeff of Hastings, IA; Aunts: Josephine Schomberg

Walter, Julian -

at the Lenox Care Center will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the

United Presbyterian Church in Lenox. Visitation will be at the United Methodist

Church from 5:00 to 8:00 with the family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00.

Interment will be held at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials can be given

in Julian's name. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at www.

ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the

Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Julian Walter was born December 15, 1920, in Long Beach, California to parents'

Louis N. and Lulu Ely Walter and passed away on May 6, 2008, after a long illness.

He was the youngest child born to this family. His family lived part of each year

in Long Beach due to his older brother's need for special medical care.

As a result, he grew up attending grade schools in Long Beach, in Lenox, and at

Mercer #8 country school in Adams County.

Julian attended all four years of high school in Lenox where, as a freshman, he

met Josephine Beach, the young girl who was to become his wife and life-long

companion. He graduated from Lenox High School in May 1939, then headed to

southern California to attend Fullerton Junior College. While he valued education

his heart remained in Iowa with Josephine and the farm. Summer of 1940 found

him back in the Midwest. He knew his future was there on the farm with his bride.

He asked Josephine to be his wife and they were married in the Beach family farm

house on December 29, 1940.  When Julian married into the very large Beach family

he allowed that "it took pretty much getting used to." He kept his own family

close, embraced his new family, and created a loving family of his own. To Julian

Walter, family was everything.

They began their life together living in the house on the family farm five miles

northwest of Lenox. Three children were born to them; Marvin and Jean and Joan.

They lived and farmed there for 57 years, raising their children, watching and helping

them go off to college, get married and start their own homes.

1977 was a big year on the farm. A new house, designed by Jo and Julian was built

just west of the old farm house. It provided spacious and comfortable country

living for them, the kids and the grandkids when they came to visit.

During his farming career, Julian learned the latest developments in farming by

studying books and papers from Iowa State University agricultural extension

services. In 1975 the farm attained the stature of a Century Farm one that had been

in the same family for 100 years, having been purchased by Julian's grandfather,

Henri Walter, and farmed by three generations.

Julian took pride in his careful stewardship of the land. Julian was an accomplished

piano player and a certified pilot of small planes in the 1940's. He loved making music

and flying. Julian and Josephine knew how to work hard and how to have fun together -

square dancing, playing cards, socializing with friends - and even churning butter in a

very unusual way!

They went on family vacations to Minnesota and out West and took the kids fishing

and canoeing and picnicking. In later years they wintered on Padre Island, Texas and

made many lasting friendships.

In 1990 Julian and Jo celebrated their Golden Anniversary with family and friends - and

then started observing their anniversary the 29th of every month!

Julian retired in 1997 and again the couple designed a new home, this one built in Lenox.

In 2007 they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

Julian was a member of the Lenox Methodist Church from early childhood, serving in many

capacities in later years. He was a former member and past president of the Lenox Rotary

Club. He was a loyal member of Masonic Lodge, serving as Master, and also of Eastern Star,

serving as Worthy Patron for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cliff and wife Gretchen, sister Ethel Grant

and husband Bill, a sister and twin brothers who died at birth, and a beloved aunt, Julia

Ely Key. Also preceding Julian in death were daughter-in-law Marsha Jadrnicek Walter,

son-in-law Larry Smith, and grandson Jeff Lucas.

Julian is survived by his wife, Jo; son Marvin and wife Rosemary of Lawrence, Kansas;

daughter Jean Miller and husband Jeff of Corvallis, Oregon; and daughter Joan Lucas and

husband Tim of Pella, Iowa. Also surviving are granddaughters Kristi Jones and husband

Tim of Issaquah, Washington; Lisa Fenske and husband John of Shore View, Minnesota; and

Julie Smith of Portland, Oregon; grandsons Kipp Walter of Tacoma, Washington; Ted Lucas

and wife Jennifer of Canton, Georgia; and Dan Smith of Bellingham, Washington; great

grandsons Walter Fenske and Wyatt Lucas; and great granddaughter Josephine Fenske.
