Darst, James Edward -

James Edward Darst, son of Edward & Etta Darst, was born January 21, 1921 at

Sidney, Iowa. James moved with his family to Clearfield in 1937 where he

graduated from high school in 1939. On August 15, 1943, James was united

in marriage to Hilda Lyddon. Together they lived and farmed south

of Clearfield for 40 years, moving into Clearfield in 1984.

James and Hilda did not have any children of their own but they were

always grateful for the privilege of raising someone else's children.

In August of 1960, they adopted JoAnn Joyce at age 8. They later

helped raise their granddaughter Misty.

James was active in civic and church as he is a member of the United

Methodist Church, Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge all in Clearfield.

He had also been a past member of the Clearfield Comm. School and

Clearfield City Council.

James has been a resident of the Clearview Home in Clearfield since

2000 and James passed away there on Feb 18, 2008.

James was preceded in death by his parents; wife Hilda in 2000; sister-

in-law Helen Roudybush & her husband Earl; and a niece Betty Joyce

Roudybush.

Survivors include his daughter JoAnn Rogers of Clarinda, IA; granddaughter

Misty Chumbley and husband Dwight of Creston, IA; 2 great grandchildren

Ricky & Shelby Burgess; other relatives and friends.

May the Lord deliver him to the care of the Angels and conduct his soul

safely through Paradise.

Robert Dean Fleming, 75, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in

Des Moines.

Robert was born on October 18, 1932 in Lenox, Iowa to Marvin and Alma

Fleming. He graduated with the class of 1950.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ann; sons, Joseph (Therese)

Fleming of San Diego, Ca. and Rev. David Fleming of Council Bluffs, Iowa;

daughters, Susan (Thomas) Goldsmith of Earlville, Iowa and Karen

(David Richards) Fleming of Des Moines; sisters, Joan (Vernal) Thompson

and Leota (Doyle) DeVoe; uncle, Wendell Fleming; grandchildren, Marie

and Brian Fleming, Ian and Hannah Goldsmith, and Emma Richards.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at Our

Lady of Americas Catholic Parish.

Fraley, Adena Kay Boltinghouse -

Funeral services for Adena K. Boltinghouse-Fraley, age 60, of Ohio, formerly of Lenox,

who died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo,

Ohio will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lenox Christian Church.

Interment will be held at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials can be directed to

Adena Kay Boltinghouse-Fraley, 60, of Sylvania, ,OH, passed away Wednesday, January

16, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. She was born on January 29, 1947,

in Creston, IA, and was the only child of Kenneth and Evelyn (Grimm) Boltinghouse.

Adena attended Lenox Community Schools in Iowa, and graduated with the class of

1965. During that same year, Adena was installed as Worthy Advisor of the Order of

Rainbow for Girls, where she had been a member since 1960.

Adena graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1969, with a

Bachelors of Science, in Education. After attending the University of South Carolina

and the University of Toledo, she received her Master's of Science in Education from

Northwest Missouri State University, in 1973.

Adena taught first grade for the School District of St. Joseph, Missouri, three years;

first grade for Spartanburg City Schools, Spartanburg, SC, one year. After moving

to Ohio, Adena was an Educational Programming Consultant with Project PLAN for

Sandusky County Schools, in Ohio, for one year. Adena was nominated as a Jennings

Scholar in 1979 and has published for a nationally circulated publication for teachers.

Adena was selected as a Teacher of the Year for Sylvania, OH, Schools and in

the same year was also nominated for the Ohio State Teacher of the Year Award as

well. Adena received the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award in 2005. Nominated by

a former student, she appeared in the Who's Who Among American Teachers, in 2005.

For the past 34 years, she was a second grade teacher at Stranahan Elementary, retiring

in May 2007, for the Sylvania City Schools, Sylvania, OH.

On April 6, 1958, Adena gave her life to Christ and became a member of the Lenox

Iowa Christian Church. She was an organist, pianist, and Sunday School teacher as well

as a Vacation Bible School teacher. Church membership was placed at Boulevard Church

of Christ, Sylvania, OH, November 9, 1972.

On June 19, 1971, Adena married Paul Houston Fraley at the Lenox Christian Church.

After their marriage, they made their first home in Spartanburg, SC. In 1980 they

made their home in Sylvania, OH. They welcomed their firstborn child, John Houston

Fraley, into the world on March 19, 1980 and their second child, Elizabeth Ann Fraley,

on April 24, 1983.

Adena always enjoyed spending time at home with her husband and children. In

1973, Adena and Paul purchased a fourth-generation farm from her parents in Iowa.

The family has enjoyed spending countless hours of quality time together in the

peaceful country setting. With her son John, she attended art exhibits and local galleries

where his work was on display.

Adena enjoyed being able to spend time with her son and see his many artistic talents. She

also spent time with her daughter Elizabeth, traveling around the U.S. to several

gymnastics competitions. Adena enjoyed the time with Elizabeth and celebrating her

athletic accomplishments.

Adena will be remembered as a loving mother and wife. Being an accomplished

educator and community member, she touched the lives of many.

Left to cherish Adena's memory are her husband, Paul H. Fraley; son, John H. Fraley

and daughter, Elizabeth A. Fraley, all of Sylvania, OH; aunts, Arlene Grimm of

Winterset, IA and Marianne Grimm of Scottsdale, AZ, along with a host of other relatives

and friends. Adena was preceded in death by her parents.

Heaton, Adaline -

Adaline Heaton, 93, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at

Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services were held

Friday, Feb. 22 at First United Methodist Church in Des Moines.

Graveside services were held at the Clearfield Cemetery,

Clearfield, Iowa.

Adaline was born in Anthon and lived in Iowa most of her life. She

worked for the federal government for 30 years, retiring

in 1971.

Adaline was a member of the First United Methodist

Church, National Association of Retired Federal Employees,

United Methodist Women and Des Moines Women's Club.

She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Barbara, seeing all

50 states and many foreign countries.

Adaline is survived by her sister, Barbara Heaton of Des

Moines; cousin, Don Whitmer of Florida and extended family

members.

Adaline will be greatly missed by her sister, Barbara, with

whom she lived all of her life.

Mabee, Phillip Allen -

Phillip Allen Mabee, born September 5, 1943, to Louis and Wanda Mabee in Apache,

Az., departed this life on January 25, 2008 at his home in Tucson, Az.

He served his country in the U.S. Army and Navy. On September 25 he married

Barbara Lynn Pettengill, daughter of John Pettengill and Fern England Pettengill. On

September 5, 1986 they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

He was active as President of the Optimist Club in Tucson. He had battled cancer for the

past 20 years. He leaves his love wife, Barbara, mother-in-law, Fern England Pettengill

of Vacanille, Ca., brother-in-law, John Jr. and Michael L. Pettengill, all of Vacanille;

sisters-in-law, Debbie, Vacanille, Ca., Ginger Howse of Kippins Newfoundland, Canada.;

brothers-in-law, John Serb of Vacanille, Ca. and Mike Howse of Kippins Newfoundland,

Canada; niece, Madison Tate Pettengill of Vacanille, Ca.; godchildren Auna Hann, Jason

Howe, Emilie Anne Howse, Michael John Howse, and great nephews Matthew and Ryan

Hann, also Kimi and Mike Gerinano and Stephen Puente and Rita Puente and Isabelle,

Julius and Sophi.

Phil will be missed by his family and a host of friends.

Minor, Ruby Iola Amick -

Ruby lola Amick was born on October 6, 1918, in Blockton, Iowa, to Myrtle Richardson

Amick and Edward Amick. Her parents were dairy farmers. She grew up in Blockton

attending Blockton Community High School from which she was graduated in 1936.

After graduation she attended Business College in Des Moines and following

completion of her courses worked for the Stoner Piano Company in Des Moines.

On February 8, 1942, Ruby was united in marriage to Rue K. Minor; who at that time

was in the Army Air Corp stationed in Stutgart, AK. When Rue went overseas

during WWII Ruby moved back to Blockton where she, along with her Aunt Frona, took

care of her sister who was ill with multiple sclerosis and cooked and kept house for her

father.

Two children were born to this union, Patricia Ann and Marilyn Kay. Ruby helped Rue

by being the bookkeeper when he ran Minor Oil Company and later together they

operated two Laundromats, one in Blockton and one in Bedford. Ruby also helped clerk

some auctions in the Blockton area.

Ruby loved working in the yard and tending to her stunning flower garden. People often

came from all over the state to view her over 200 labeled varieties of Irises. She

and Rue also grew a large garden of fruits and vegetables which provided wonderful

canned and frozen food for the family's enjoyment for many years.

Ruby was also noted for her beautiful homemade baby afghans, quilts and delicious

homemade pies. Of special delight to her family were the black raspberry pies made

from homegrown fruit.

Ruby, although reticent to play for anyone other than immediate family, entertained

and taught her daughters a love of music by playing the piano. She wasn't one to join

clubs or be especially social, preferring instead to be a loving mother and homemaker

for her family. Her home was always welcoming to family and her children's friends

and was often a second home to their special friends Phyllis Rusco and Marilyn Landis.

When Rue and Ruby's health no longer permitted them to keep the house and grounds

in Blockton they moved to Quiet Harbor Estates in Creston to be closer to the

hospital and their doctors. There they made many new friends such as Bud and Kaye

Breckenridge. However, Blockton has been and will always remain to the family "Home."

After Rue's passing in 2001 Ruby moved to Minnesota where she would be closer to

daughter Marilyn and her family, and she resided there until her death on February 19,

2008.

Proceeding Ruby in death were her parents, sister Opal, half-sister Vera Campbell and

husband Rue.

Left to cherish the many good memories are daughter Patricia Larceri and husband

Vito of Grant, Florida, daughter Marilyn and husband Michael of Bloomington, MN,

grandchildren Katrina and Alex Wiebe of Minnesota and greatgrandson Warren

Sanders of Minnesota, sister-in-law Leona Klepinger of Marshalltown, brother-in-

law Dwight Minor and wife Thelma of Rathburn, Iowa, sister-in-law Betty Minor

of Clarinda, LA; sister-in-law Edna Minor of Hamlin, Texas; nieces, nephews and

cousins.

Also left to cherish her friendship and memory are Phyllis Rusco Poore and Kaye

Breckenridge.

Morris, Leonard -

Funeral services for Leonard Morris, age 87, of Corning, who died Friday, February 1,

2008, at the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, will be held Tuesday, February 5, 2008

at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Corning. Visitation will be Monday

from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Interment will be held in the Stringtown Cemetery with military rites accorded by the

Ourcq Post No. 117 of the Corning American Legion.  Memorials can be given in

Leonard Morris was born near Sharpsburg in Taylor County, Iowa on December 29,

1920, the son of Charles and Mary (Beck) Morris. His family moved to a farm in Adams

County north of Lenox, where he attended a rural school and Lenox High School.

As a young man during the depression years, he picked fruit in the state of Washington

and followed the wheat harvest into Montana.

He married Jean McGregor on June 15, 1941, at her parent's farm home near

Prescott. Their children were Stephen, Nancy, and Philip.

Leonard farmed and raised purebred Chester White hogs, until he served on the naval

aircraft carrier, The Bunker Hill, in World War II.

After the war he and his brother Howard formed a partnership, Morris Brothers

Implement. They had a John Deere dealership and construction company in Corning.

They operated heavy equipment, building farm ponds and doing soil conservation

work of all kinds. Leonard took special pride in his part in developing the sites for the

Corning hospital, nursing home, elementary school, and municipal swimming pool.

Leonard was a member of the first Adams County Conservation Board which made

Lake Icaria a reality. He was a longtime member of the Land Improvement Contractors

of America, serving as the national president in 1965. Leonard was active in the

Democrat Party. He was a member of both the Stringtown Church and the Corning United

Methodist Church, serving in many ways. He was a Boy Scout Master at Prescott and

then Corning for many years, being chosen to receive the Silver Beaver award. His

creative storytelling was a skill he shared with family, friends, and all of those young

scouts. He was even able to keep his troops in their tents at night with his scary tales.

In his retirement years, he and his son Philip were partners in farming, and Leonard took

great pleasure in restoring a 1949 MT tractor with him in the off-season. He liked going

fishing and carving, but foremost, he was a "familyfirst" grandpa.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Howard; his son Stephen in

1986; daughter-in-law Mary Stewart; brother-in-law Henry Walker; and sister-in-law

Vivian Morris.

He is survived by his wife Jean Morris of Corning, daughter Nancy Morris of

Stringtown; son Philip Morris and wife LeAnn (Grundman) Morris of Lenox; two sisters,

Helen Swartz and husband Clark of Waterloo, Iowa; and Virginia Walker of Greeley,

Colorado; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Janice Peterson, age 51 of Bedford, Iowa, who died Tuesday,

Janice Kay Peterson was born July 5, 1956 in Corning, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin

Miller and Esther Miller. She grew up in the Sharpsburg area and attended schools

in Lenox.

Janice was united in marriage to LaVerne Ambrose, April 26, 1974 at Hopkins,

Missouri; they later divorced. One son, Rob, was born to this union. Janice was united

in marriage to Joe Peterson on December 23, 1987 at Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked

at Eveready Battery Company, Maryville, Missouri for 28 years. Janice enjoyed flowers,

especially tulips and roses. She collected snowmen. Her main interest was her family

and she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Janice is survived by her husband Joe Peterson of Bedford, Iowa; son, Rob

Ambrose and wife Stacy of Irwin, Iowa; daughter, Christina Peterson of Crystal,

Minnesota; grandchildren, Delaney and Hailey Ambrose; father, Ed Miller and wife

Marlene of Bedford, Iowa; mother, Esther Miller of Bedford, Iowa; brothers,

Darrell Miller and wife Donna of Sidney, Iowa, Richard Miller of Clarinda, Iowa; sisters,

Karolyn Nelson and husband Gary of Creston, Iowa, Joyce Majors and husband Bruce of

Bedford, Iowa, Karen Wiederholt of Bedford, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and

many friends.

Funeral services for Jean C. (Goodale) Rusk of Newton, Iowa, formerly of Lenox, were

held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial

was in Wittenberg Cemetery in rural Newton. She died Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Hospice

of Jasper County's Monarch Wing in Newton.

Jean was born on February 23, 1953 in Des Moines to Eugene V and Fanny M. (Wilson)

Goodale. She grew up in Lenox. She was a graduate of Lenox High School and received

her Associate of Arts degree from Southwestern Community College in 1973; received

her B.S. in Elementary Education from Iowa State University in 1976.

She had worked for the State of Iowa for 24 years, most recently as a Purchasing

Agent II.

She lived in Creston and Ames, Red Oak. She was a member of the First Presbyterian

Church and Iowa State University Alumni Association. She enjoyed flowers,

traveling, and was a very good cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Randy of Newton, son, Nichoals Rusk of Newton,

daughter, Krystal Rusk of Newton, brother, Robert Goodale of Omaha, Ne.
