Reed, Donald Frank -

Donald Frank Reed, 76, of Alburnett, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007 at his home,

surrounded by his family. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct.23, 2007 at

Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by Rev. H. Burr Bryant.

Burial was in Dunkard Cemetery, Toddville.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Juanita of Alburnett; eight children,

Patsy (Dale) Strand of Toddville, Danny (Elsie) Reed of Locust Grove, Ga.,

Pam (David) Kirk, Peggy Hull, David Reed, Robin (Randy) Morrison, Roger (Kim)

 Reed, and Avery (Lynn) Reed, all of Alburnett; two brothers, Charlie (Hazel)

Reed of Des Moines and Bill (Janet) Reed of Lenox; 24 grandchildren; 26 great

grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orville Reed and Lewis

Reed; and four sisters, Eva Jones, Lola Dillon, Lometa Brammer, and Nina Baker.

Don was born September 22, 1931, the son of W.O. and Erma (Belding) Reed in

Lenox. He attended Lenox High School. On June 26, 1948 he married Juanita

Reason in Creston. Don worked in bridge construction with Cramer Bros, for

28 years.

Don enjoyed his grandkids and loved going to ballgames of every sort. He always

put others before himself. Don seemed to be everyone's grandpa. He was dearly

loved and will be greatly missed.

Schlapia, Floyd Dale -

Floyd Dale Schlapia was born April 12th, 1915, to Floyd Dudley and Ocie

Pearl (Miller) Schlapia at the old Butler house at Benton, Iowa. He

passed away on December 3rd, 2007, at the Ringgold County

Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Dale was a proud 1932 graduate of Benton high school and Refrigeration

and Air Conditioning School in Chicago, Illinois. In 1940 Dale joined

the United States Army Air Force and was stationed in France and

England. He served as a medic and witnessed the bombing of London.

Dale was discharged in 1945 and came home to marry his sweetheart,

Maralyn McMath on September 4th, 1945, in Troy, Kansas,

and was blessed to celebrate 62 years of marriage. They were

blessed with three children, Jeannette Ione, Roger Dale , and

Meredith Ann. Dale worked at Freeland's, Willey's Plumbing

and Heating, Keith Cole's Firestone Store and then was self

employed as an appliance repairman and electrician. Dale was

a caring man often never charging for repairs.

Dale enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren

always attending their school and sport activities. He was very

proud of them. Dale went camping at Lake Rathbun and met

several new friends. This group camped and fished together

for several years. He also liked to go to Mt. Pleasant to the Old

Thresher's Reunion and had to be there to hear the early morning

whistle blow. Christmas was a special time for Dale. He

would stick his head into the bedroom at 2:00 a.m. to wake his

children and yell "Santa's been here." When his grandchildren

came along, Dale had to wait till 5:00 a.m. to open presents.

He would be dressed and waiting for Meredith to call so he

could come in for gift opening. It would take him 5 minutes

to get there!! He had a collection of musical toys that were

favorite gifts for him. The great grandchildren always got to

play with these.

Maralyn and Dale loved to take car rides enjoying the

country side, walking in the pasture, sitting on the porch, and

enjoying watching the cattle and baby calves. He was a very caring,

easy going, and loving man enjoying life and family. Dale

was a 60 year member of the V.F.W. Post # 1797 in Creston; the

American Legion Post #172 and the United Baptist Presbyterian

Church, both in Mount Ayr. Dale was preceded in death by his

parents and a brother Russell Schlapia.

He is survived by his devoted wife Maralyn, daughter Jeannette

and husband David Scott of Osceola, IA, son Roger and

wife Betty Schlapia of Bellevue, NE, and daughter Meredith and

husband Duane Dredge of Mt. Ayr, IA., grandchildren, Derek

Scott, Deron and Liline Scott, Eric and Jennifer Schlapia, Amy

Leming, Leslie Dredge-Murphy and Jared Murphy, Clinton and

Allison Dredge, Adam and Katrina Dredge, and Morgan Dredge

and great grandchildren Brooklynn Leming, Tanner and Sophie

Schlapia, Rhett and Zachary Murphy, Colton Dale Dredge, and

Adalynn Dredge. Sisters include Laveta Strange of Diagonal,

IA, Thelma Schlapia of Longmont, CO., Kay (Lee) Dotson of

Phoenix, AZ. Fay (Dale) Mather of Silver City, NM and sister-in-

laws Mary Lou Schlapia of Boulder, CO., Lavon Brown of

Clearfield, IA., and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert

and Shirley McMath of Clearfield, many nephews, nieces, and

a host of friends. His wisdom and love will carry on through

all that he touched.

Stream, Dorothy Vernice Bowen Eckler -

Funeral Services for Dorothy Stream, age 99 of Lenox who died Friday, November 9,

2007 at the Lenox Care Center were held Monday, November 12, 2007 at 1.1:00 a.m.

at the Lenox Christian Church. Interment was held in the North Fairview Cemetery in

Dorothy Vernice Bowen Eckler Stream was born June 25, 1908, on a farm near Neponset,

Illinois the daughter of Frank Bowen and Helen (Armstrong) Bowen. Her Bowen siblings

were Ada, Donald, Lorna and Laurie.

Due to a family illness she was brought to Lenox as a small child and made her home with

cousins Bessie and Charley Eckler and took their name. Her Eckler siblings were Willard

and Mildred. Dorothy grew up attending school in Lenox, graduating with the Class of

1926. She then taught in the rural school system until she was united in marriage

to Willis Stream on March 15, 1930, in Red Oak, Iowa. To this loving union four children

were born, Harold, Lloyd (Bud), Helen and Howard (Skip).

Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Lenox Christian Church. She was baptized as a

young girl, at the same time as her best friend, Lenore (Dunbar) Bailie. Dorothy and

Lenore remained best friends for over ninety years. Dorothy taught Sunday school

and served as a deaconess and bible school teacher. She also enjoyed being a member

of the CWF for many years.

When Dorothy's children were school age, she went back to teaching elementary school

for a number of years in Van Wert and at the Lenox Community Schools.

She and Willis were loving caregivers to elderly family members in their home on many

different occasions. She was also a 'much loved' babysitter for many children and

families throughout Lenox. Everyone will miss Dorothy's great, cooking, especially her

pies and homemade noodles. Dorothy loved family dinners and reunions with all of her

loved ones around her during picnics, birthdays all enjoying her 'sweets'.

Left to cherish Dorothy's memory are her three children, Bud Stream and wife

Shirley of Cameron, Illinois; Helen Nelson of Orange City, Iowa; and Skip Stream and

wife Jannie of Harvest, Alabama; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Stream of LeMars,

Iowa; eight grandchildren, Randy, Rick, Becky, Barby, Danny, David, Kim and Shad;

fifteen great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Courtney, Reagan, Alex, Jamie, Mike, Mark, Clint,

April, Paul, Bob, Brad, Ashley, Zachery, and Keatyn; ten greatgrandchildren; a sister,

Mildred Edgar of California; a sister-in-law, Clarice Stream of New Sharon; two

former daughter-in-laws, Beverly and CharLes; along with many nieces, nephews,

relatives and friends.

Preceding Dorothy in death are her parents and in-laws; her husband Willis Stream

who died September 21, 1985; her son Harold Stream who died September 4, 2007;

three brothers; two sisters; and a son-in-law, Dale Nelson.

Sweeney, Shane Patrick -

Shane Sweeney, 30, died Saturday, December 8, 2007 of a sudden heart attack at his

home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, December 13,2007

at the American Legion Hall in Lenox, Iowa with burial to follow at North Fairview

Cemetery there. Visitation begins after 2 pm Wednesday at Ritchie Funeral Home in

Lenox where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm.

Shane was born in Creston and was raised on farms in the Prescott and Lenox area.

He graduated from Lenox High School in 1995 and earned his Bachelor's degree

in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa. Shane worked as a C.P.A.

at Flagg & Company in Des Moines. On August 6, 2005 he married Meghann Ryan

Wild and they made their home in Des Moines.

Shane enjoyed music and sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the Florida

Gators. Spending time with his family, friends, and his dogs, Fenway and Swampy,

was his favorite pastime.

Shane P was a loyal and devoted husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, and

accountant. He had a powerful way of walking into a room full of strangers,

and leaving a room full of friends; Shane had yet to meet someone he couldn't

talk to.

Shane couldn't keep a secret, or a grudge, but he kept and maintained

friendships for life, provided a level-headed approach to the most difficult

tasks in life, and his patience and forgiveness seemed to never run out.

Shane is survived by his wife Meghann; his parents, Kevin and Debbie Sweeney

of Lenox; his sisters Courtney (Ryan) Brown of Lenox and Kerry Sweeney of

Urbandale; nieces, Kristen and Makayla; and his step grandmother, Isabelle

Jenkins of Creston, and in-laws, John and Peggy Wild, Trevor, Ian and Shea,

and grandparents, John and Gert Wild.

Trost, Dorothy Mae Selders -

Dorothy Mae Trost, the daughter of the late Theodore and Grace (Brown) Selders,

was born on April 26, 1928, in Sharpsburg, Iowa. On October 30, 2007, Dorothy

passed away suddenly following surgery at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in

Des Moines at the age of 79.

Dorothy grew up in Sharpsburg and Gravity, Iowa, from where she graduated

high school in 1946. Following high school she lived in Marysville, California, for

a period of time.

On September 25, 1949, Dorothy was united in marriage with Donald Howard

Trost of Lenox at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Bedford, Iowa. They had two

children, Craig and Kim.

After marriage, Dorothy and Donald resided in Kent, Iowa, for about nine years

where she began her career as a homemaker and mother. For the next twenty-

three years she resided on the farm east of Lenox. In addition, she spent her

days gardening and helping with the farming. Over the years, Dorothy was

employed in various clerical and bookkeeping positions in Kent and Lenox.

For the past twenty-three years, she has resided with her husband in the

same home in Lenox.

In retirement, they spent many winters in Florida and Texas. She was a

member of the Methodist Church of Kent and the United Methodist

Church of Lenox.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her

husband Donald of Lenox; her brother Theodore Selders and wife Anne of

Westminster, California; her son Donald (Craig) Trost, MD PhD and wife 

Roberta of East Lyme, Connecticut; her daughter Kim Hilgenberg and husband

Michael of Cambridge, Iowa; and four grandchildren: Nicholas Hilgenberg

and wife Julee of Cambridge, Tawnia Leslie and husband Michael of Maxwell, Iowa;

Jason Trost of London, England; and Brian Trost and wife Lucy of Manchester,

Connecticut. In addition, there are four great grandchildren, one

niece, and two nephews surviving.

Tullberg, Myron (Mike) -

Myron (Mike) Tullberg 76, of Wayne, Nebraska died on Thursday, November 22, 2007

at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska. Funeral services for Mike will be held

on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield;

Pastor Jerome Cloninger will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from

3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Bressler - Munderloh Funeral Home in Wakefield. There will be a

prayer service at 7:00 P.M. on Monday evening at the funeral home. Military funeral

Myron "Mike" Delbert Tullberg was born on August 6, 1931 in Wakefield, the son

of Axel and Sigrid (Moline) Tullberg. He grew up on a farm near Wakefield. Mike was

baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. He attended Lincoln

School District #87 and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1948. He entered

the Army in 1952 and remained in the Army Reserves until 1961. He married Gwendonna

Murfin on December 26, 1951. They were married for 30 years. The couple began

farming near Martinsburg and later moved to Wakefield, where he farmed and worked

at the Milton G. Waldbaum Company until 1982. Myron moved to Norfolk before settling

in Lyons, Nebraska. He was an active member of the Bethany Lutheran church. He

worked at Logan Valley Manor for many years, and then at the Lyons-Decatur Northeast

School until his retirement in 2005. He moved back to Wakefield and lived at the

Wakefield Health Care Center and later moved to Premier Estates in Wayne.

He enjoyed farming, gardening and most of all, spending time with his family.

Mike is survived by his five children: Linda and husband Monty Granfield of Randolph,

NE; Diane and husband Mike Row of Bruning, NE; Dennis and wife Melia Tullberg

of Wayne, NE; Connie and husband David Herbster of Sabetha, KS; and Gary and

wife Michelle Tullberg of Lenox, IA; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister

Delores Lehman of Wakefield, brother Paul Tullberg of Schuyler and sister-in-law

Mila Tullberg of Elk Point, SD.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Donald and an infant brother

Weldon, and one granddaughter Brenna Herbster.

Wallace, Gordon Chandler -

Memorial services for Gordon Wallace age 90 of Gravity, who died Saturday,

September 1, 2007 Colton, California were held Tuesday, October 30, 2007

at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial of ashes was

Gordon Chandler Wallace was born June 28, 1917, to Kent and Hazel Chandler

Wallace in a rural Gravity, Iowa farmhouse built by his grandfather. He attended

school for nine years in Gravity and then attended Oak Park Academy in Nevada,

Iowa for the next three years. Gordon attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska

for the next four years, graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in

Biology. He attended Nebraska State University until 1944, when he graduated

with a doctorate of Dental Surgery.

Gordon then moved to Boulder, Colorado and bought an existing dental practice. He

soon met Leta Corrine Turner at a church picnic in Denver where they were married

within a year and spent thenext 26 years in Boulder. His dental practice was

interrupted for two years by a call from the US Air Force in 1955. He was

stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a Major in the

Dental Unit. Gordon then returned to Boulder to resume his private practice

until 1971, when he received a call from the Clarinda Complex Treatment Center

to replace their retiring dentist. Although Gordon practiced dentistry for

38 years, he was a farmer at heart which made the decision easy to return to his

birthplace and the home farm. He retired from dentistry in 1982, and remained

in Gravity until November 2006, when he moved to California to be closer to family.

Gordon was active in many church projects, originated the Boulder, Colorado

35-member men's chorus, spent many years as head elder, often preached the

sermon when the church pastor had conflicting obligations, and was a board

member for Union College. He never turned down a bowl of popcorn, was a kind and

gracious man, laughed easily - even at himself, and often took the short end of

a deal so that others would benefit.

Gordon is survived by his wife Leta, son Gregory Winston Kent (Un) of Colton,

CA, daughter Debra Lou Winkle (Greg) of Napa, CA, six grandchildren and one great

grandson from son Gregory, sister-in-law Marilyn, and nephews Earl Mark (Lisa) and

Gordon Joel (Patti) Wallace.

Young, Donald Floyd -

Donald Floyd Young, age 86, of Leon, Iowa, son of Floyd Denzel Young and Alta Ruth

(Bush) Young was born June 5, 1921 in Wichita Kansas, and died November 25, 2007 of

renal failure at Westview Acres Care Center in Leon, Iowa.

Don lived in Wichita until he was eight and moved with his family to a farm near Kent,

Iowa. After a few years the family relocated to another farm near Kent, and when

Don was about 8 or 9 the family moved to a farm six miles north of Lenox. He

attended the country school nearby, graduating after the 8th grade. Donald graduated

from Lenox High School in 1940. He then attended college at the University of

Iowa. For many years he helped his parents run Young's Restaurant in Atlantic, Iowa.

Don began working for the State of Iowa in the Beer and Liquor Control Department in

1969. He transferred to Leon as the liquor store manager. He retired from the state in

1986.

Donald was also a member of the Corning, Iowa Masonic Temple Instruction Lodge

#275 AF and AM - Grand Lodge of Iowa, AF and AM and, since 1968, the Za Ga Zig

Temple in Des Moines. Over the years Donald had eclectic interests ranging from

vocal, piano, and organ music to family history. He had a very nice voice and sang

at weddings and funerals.

He did much research in the history of Decatur County. He enjoyed antique auctions

and purchased a variety of antiques. He enjoyed his cars and always was proud of their

condition. Donald also did some furniture refinishing. He collected a variety of objects

- from watches and pocket watches to Scandinavian Christmas plates. He enjoyed

learning about gardening, amassing his collections, and reading.

In his younger years he enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed playing poker and was

evidently an excellent player!

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his sister Marian Jeanne (Young) Johnson of Ft. Wayne, Indiana,

and three nieces: Ramona Berg and husband George "Corky" of Willmar, Minnesota; Janet

Stevenson and husband Jim of Katy, Texas; and Sue Conley and husband Len of Ft. Wayne,

Indiana. He also is survived by two great nieces and three great nephews.

Following cremation, memorial services were Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Slade-O'Donnell

Funeral Home in Leon. Burial will be at a later date in Atlantic Cemetery. Memorials may be

given to Hospice of Central Iowa.
