Alborn, Harold LeRoy -

An ice storm that hit southwest Iowa Wednesday afternoon wasn't just inconvenient: It was deadly.

Harold Alborn, 58, of rural Bedford was the victim of a two-truck accident on Highway 49 south of Lenox. According to the Taylor

County Sheriff's Department report, Alborn was driving a pickup truck southbound on Highway 49 when his vehicle slid on the ice-covered surface. Alborn's pickup slid sideways on the highway and was struck by a semi truck owned by Barrans Farm Supply of Lenox and driven by Roger Heim of Lenox. Heim reportedly suffered no serious injuries.

Alborn was taken to Greater Community Hospital in Creston by the Lenox Ambulance Service.

The victim's obituary appears elsewhere in this edition.

---

Harold LeRoy Alborn was born April 15, 1935 to Melvin Andrew Alborn and Donna Wyoma Kessler Alborn near Perry, Iowa and died as the result of a traffic accident on January 26, 1994.

He attended school near Perry, Iowa and graduated from Waukee High. He had grown up with a strong tie to the Lutheran Church

and a strong bent to being a farmer

He married Mary Jane Trucks at Coon Rapids. Iowa and they lived for a time near West Des Moines and moved about 20 years

ago to a farm east of Bedford, Iowa.

While he did spend two years in the armed services as medic and dental technician, his plans were oriented to a life of relationship to

the soil which he tilled, and drew many comments from neighbors as to his mastering of farming.

Harold and Mary Jane were parents of three children: Mark Andrew Alborn, Michael Joe Alborn, and Rae Lynn Alborn.

The birth of a tiny grandson, Andrew Alborn, added a new dimension to his life's interests, which included membership in the

Minneapolis-Moline Collectors Club. He had restored several old tractors and did so skillfully.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Rae Lynn. He leaves his wife Mary Jane, sons Mark and Michael, sisters

Rose Keltner, Carolyn Tew, Nancy McMenomin and a brother, Terry Lee Alborn, plus good friends at community.
