Bunting, Eva Priscilla Johnston -

Eva Priscilla Johnston, daughter of John Johnston and Mary Olive Larkin, was born December 22, 1891, in Adams County, Iowa, and passed away May 14, 1971, at Colonial Manor

at Corning, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 23 days.

She was married to Raymond V. Bunting, Feb. 25, 1914. This union was blessed with, three daughters and one son, Mrs. Arthur (Merle) Burkhalter of Creston, Mrs. Carl (Vera) Bovaird of Corning, Mary Bunting of Phoenix, Arizona, and Wayne Bunting at home. Their entire life was spent in Adams County except for eight years in the State of South Dakota.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Raymond, and her four children. Also surviving are two sons-in-law, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs Rob

Bothell of Corning and Mrs. Leslie Coulter of Brooks, one brother, Chester Johnston of Creston and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Otto Johnston of Corning and a brother-in-law, Leslie

Coulter of Brooks, plus a host of friends and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Otto and Milo, and one great grandson.

She was a member of the Mercer Center Methodist church where she served faithfully. To seek the Lord's help, her Bible was her guide. Doing things for her family and

friends, always came first in her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. To know her was to love her.

Funeral services were held at the Mercer Center Church on May 17, 1971, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. William Fry, and assisted by Rev. John C. Turner.

Internment was at Lenox, Iowa.

Music was provided by Mrs Bert Peckham and Mrs. Doyle  Tranbarger. Pallbearers were Lee Brokaw, George Schafroth, Ivan Bissel, Harold Riley, Verne Scott and Lloyd Duncan.

Flower bearers were Mrs. Lee Brokaw, Mrs. Donald Bovaird and Mrs Verna Scott.

Dennis, George Harvey -

George Harvey Dennis, 92, a former Lenox resident, died at Clarinda Sunday, April 11th. Mr. Dennis was a long-time resident of this area and had moved to Clarinda about three years ago.

He is survived by his widow, Florence, a son, George Dennis and a daughter, Mrs. Johnny Beck of Reinbeck.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, April 13th at 2 p.m. from the Bender Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Briley, pastor of the Lenox Christian Church, officiating.

Bearers were Ernest Nook, Ronnie Wurster, Glenn Williams, Melvin Williams, Raymond Brown and Roland Boltinghouse.

Burial was in Guss cemetery.

Dennis, George Harvey -

George Harvey Dennis was born on a farm near Guss, Ia. on Sept. 1, 1878. He spent his entire lifetime as a resident of Taylor County until the past three years when he left the farm and moved to Clarinda, Iowa. He passed away at his home on Easter Sunday, at the age of 92.

Early in life he became a member of the Christian Church. He was an active member of the Blue Grove Church and later transferred his membership to the Christian Church in Lenox.

He is survived toy his widow, Florence, a son George and wife Monna, all of Clarinda, a daughter Pauline and husband, Johnny of Reinbeck, Iowa, two stepsons, Blaine Stogdill and wife, Gwendolyn of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Five grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, other relatives friends and neighbors also survive.

Eberle, Kenneth -

Kenneth Eberle, 60, life-long resident of this community, died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Tuesday evening. He had been in ill health for several years and bad been admitted to the hospital earlier that day. Death came at 6:15.

Kenneth was born Dec. 9th 1911 in Lenox, the son of Mr and Mrs. Chris Eberle. He was a twin, his brother Carl, having preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sisters, Georgia Eberle and Mrs. Leah McIntyre of Lenox and Wilma Gosch of Wall Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox.

Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.

Ethington, Helen Clute -

Mrs. Helen C. Ethington, 73, former Lenox resident, died at her home at 1310 Curtiss Ave., in Ames Monday, May 17th at 1:00 p.m.

Mrs. Ethington was born January 3, 1898 at Bedford, Iowa. She spent part of her life in Lenox before moving to Ames in 1941.

She was married to Harold J. Ethington on July 24, 1919 at Clearfield, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband, four sons, Dean of Cedar Falls, Claire of Aurora, Ill., Dale of Cedar Falls, Paul of Birmingham, Michigan, one daughter, Mrs Marilyn Russie of Overland Park, Michigan, one brother, George E Clute of Monroe, Mich, two sisters, Mrs Pauline Williams of Lacey, Washington and Mrs. Vesta Bailey of Clearfield. Fourteen

grandchildren and two great grandchildren; also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m., from the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames with the Rev. Wilbur Wilcox officiating.

Burial was at 3:30 p.m. in the Clearfield cemetery.

Hinton, Donald Melvin -

Funeral services for Donald Melvin Hinton, 48 of Conway were held Monday, April 26th at Shum-Novinger funeral home in Bedford with Rev. Edward Tschetter, officiating. Mr. Hinton had suffered a heart attack in early February and had since been confined to his home where he died April 23rd.

The son of Guy P. and Gladys Cain Hinton, he was born Aug. 23, 1922, at Kent, Iowa. He attended school and lived in Taylor county all of his life, having farmed in this area since

his marriage. He enlisted in the navy in 1944 and served briefly.

He was united in marriage on Nov. 28th, 1947 to Doris Burgher and to this union four children were born, Delores Jackson 19, Daryl 14, Debra 12 and Donna 9. He is survived by his family and father.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, and was a lover of the soil. He was very successful in hog raising and in the development of a Charlais cattle herd. Mr. Hinton

was also a 4-H leader. He was a kind and loving husband and father and was always deeply concerned about the welfare of his family. He loved to visit with everyone he

met. Don will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

Graveside rites were held at Fairview cemetery in Lenox at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday for John T. (Jack) Howard, 65, of Ventura, California, who died there Friday. Rev.

Wallace Nelson of the Presbyterian Church, officiated.

Mr. Howard was a native of Union county but had spent the past 36 years in California. He was an uncle of Lavon and Melvin Howard of Lenox.

Howard, John R (Jack) -

John T. (Jack) Howard, was born on a farm in Union County, March 9, 1906, tine son of E. E. and Mae Howard. He died April 9th, 1971 at a convalescent hospital after a very long illness of strokes, heart attacks, emphysema plus other trouble. He went to California 35 years ago and worked in large restaurant until forced to retire on account of health. He was baptized by Woody Allen, who had the services. He was a member of the Church of Christ which he was a member when he passed away.

He was married to Anna Peterson in 1925. Three brothers, his father and mother preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing Mother Anna Howard of Creston, Paul Howard of Omaha, Paul Allen Peterson, Martin Peterson, both of Kansas City. Mrs. Edna Tourigny of Inglewood, Calif., Mrs. Agnes Wickman of Council Bluffs, Iowa, an aunt, Miss LeAnna Howard in St. Joseph, Mo., several nephews and a niece plus a host of friends in Ventura and all of his dear friends in Lenox—the dear ones you can always count on.

Layne, Bessie Wood

Mrs. Bessie Layne, resident of Albuquerque for 30 years, passed away June 10th in Omaha, Nebr. following a heart attack. She is a former Lenox resident.

Mrs Layne is survived by her husband, Frank Layne of Albuquerque, three sons, Robert of Albuquerque, Jim of Denver, Colorado and Don Layne of Omaha, three sisters, Mrs. Nora Keithley of Seagraves, Tex., Mrs Myrtle Foust of Lubbock, Tex, and Mrs Lena Darnold of Albuquerque, N M, three brothers, W E Wood of Albuquerque, C H Wood of California, and A L Wood of Silver City.

Five grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Layne was a member of the Methodist Church.

Funeral services were conducted June 14th with burial in Albuquerque.

Lucas, Kenneth Emery -

Kenneth Emery Lucas, son of Joseph Leroy Lucas and Lena Pearl (Stutesman) Lucas, was born February 4, 1913 on a farm northeast of Bedford, only four days after the

parents and family moved into Iowa from Missouri.

He was the fifth child in a family of eight children. He passed away on April 4, 1971, at the age of 58 years and two months.

As his health would permit, he attended grade school at the Clayton Center School, and graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1931,

of which he was president at the time.

At six years of age he was stricken with tuberculosis of the hip bone from which he suffered greatly. At the age of eight, he entered tine University

of Iowa hospital for children, where he spent the next sixteen months in traction, and year around outdoor exposure. This was followed by numerous trips

to and from the hospital for a number of years. The attending physician, Dr. Steiner, often used him as a speciman when lecturing to students of the

medical profession. He would usually start his disertation by telling these students that "only faith and the will to live'" had permitted him to survive this ordeal.

On February 23, 1930, he was baptized into the Christian faith at the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

In 1936 he moved to Bedford;  and with his brother, Vane, they operated the Phillips Gasoline & Service Station at the present location for two years.

At that time the partnership was dissolved and Kenneth continued that operation until 1943.

On March 20, 1937, he was  united in marriage to Blythe Lorene Damewood. To this union was born one son, Kenneth Dean Lucas, now married and

living with his wife, Kathy, two children, Natalie Dee and Mitchell Scott, at Pella, Iowa.

In 1943 he felt the need to assist in the military efforts of World War II, and decided to leave the Phillips business to join LaPlant-Choate-Mfg. Co.,

in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he advanced to Chief Time Study Director in the Standards Department of that company.

In late 1945, he and his family returned to Bedford where he has served in sales and service of animal food supplements with Moormans, Foxbilt, and

the past eighteen years with Lucas Products Company of Bedford. The last two years he spent in the office on production and inventory control.

During his career, he made many friends and performed many valuable services for livestock producers over a wide area of Southwest Iowa and

Northwest Missouri.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Blythe, on March 10, 1971, (only 25 days prior to his passing), and his mother on April 2, 1962.

Besides the son, Kenneth Dean and family, he is survived by his father, Roy Lucas, age 89, who lives at Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford, and seven brothers and sisters; and their husbands and wives. They are: Marie (Mrs. Estel Larison) of Bedford, Doris (Mrs. Herman O'Dell) of New Market, Vane and Max of Bedford, Vadonna (Mrs. Ralph Price) of Gravity, Ivan of Lenox, and Ronald of Bedford and a host of friends, and neighbors who know, understood, respected and loved him.

Kenneth will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Potts, William Marcus -

William Marcus Potts, 84, of 1021 Prairie Street, passed away suddenly Thursday afternoon at Grinnell General Hospital. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Kane Potts and was born March 29, 1887 near Lenox, la.

He attended the schools in Lenox, and on April 7, 1908 was united in marriage to Nona Copeland at Lenox, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Reldon H. (Dick) Potts,

who passed away June 3, 1968, Willis K. Potts of Portage, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Bill (Garlan) Welsh of Montezuma, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. Potts lived in Lenox until 1926 when he was transferred by the Standard Oil Co. to Stronghurst, Illinois for 2 years. In 1928 they moved to Grinnell and lived on an

acreage west of town for thirty years.  He continued with the Standard Oil Co, as a bulk oil dealer. He also operated a Feed Mill truck for a number of years. In 1959 they moved to

Montezuma where they lived for ten years before returning to Grinnell to make their home.

Mr. Potts was a member of the Christian Church in Lenox, Iowa. He and his wife, Nona, had recently celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary.

Mr. Potts is survived by his wife, Nona, 1 son and 1 daughter, Willis and Garlan, four grandchildren: Mrs. Jere (Linda)  Maddux of Des Moines, Bill Welsh III of Algona, Debbie

Welsh of Montezuma, and Susan Lynn Potts of Portage, Wisconsin, and two great grandchildren: Skip and Jane Welsh of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Dick, two sisters and two brothers Mrs. Minnie Summers, Mrs. Bessie Stoner, Robert and Raymond.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1st, at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Hugh Shiveley, pastor of the Grinnell First Baptist Church, officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Leonard Pearce. Bearers were Don Bailey, Donovan Evans, LeRoy Johnson, Don Sparks, Clair Strand and Harold Weidow.

Burial was made in Hazelwood cemetery.

Among those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Gall Potts, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Potts, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hill all of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hill of Corning. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Tully of Lenox, all nephews of Mr. Potts, and Mrs. Ray Potts of Stuart, Iowa.

Reynolds, Eliphalet (Liffie) -

Eliphalet (Liffie) Reynolds, 83, Lenox area resident for many years, died Tuesday evening, May 18th in Chula Vista, California. Graveside services and interment were held at the family plot in Fairview cemetery Tuesday, May 25th. Rev. Donald Briley of the Christian Church and Tremont Lodge, No. 343, AF&AM conducted the service.

Mr. Reynolds was a well known individual around Lenox during most of his lifetime. He was a long time member of the First Christian Church of Lenox, of Tremont Lodge, No.

343 AF&AM, and was active in local civic organizations.

Liffie was born on the family farm 3 miles northeast of Lenox on April 7, 1888. After marrying Marie Bethke of Edgely, North Dakota in January of 1916 he bought the farm and

remained in the Lenox area as a farmer, auctioneer, John Deere implement dealer, sales manager and bowling alley operator until 1951 when the couple moved to Chula Vista,

California.

Two sons, Cecil Carl and LaVerne Louis plus a stillborn child were born to the couple. They also acted as foster parents for the nephew and niece, David and Leona Cristy.

Always an energetic, sincere person with a great buoyant spirit Liffie loved life and all Gods people. Wherever he went he quickly made friends and enriched the lives of people both in Iowa and later in California with his warm affection and concern. He was particularly active in church work, devoting his time to all the duties of the Church, serving as deacon,

elder, and leader of various groups, but finding his highest satisfaction in working with the young people and teaching Sunday school. He also acted as town Santa Claus for some

30 years.

After a serious surgery in 1950, he was unable to perform strenuous labor and at the age of 62 moved to Chula Vista, California anticipating a quiet retirement. He soon found that

he was not content to sit idle and went looking for something to do where he could be with people. What better place could he find than running an elevator in one of the largest bank businesses in San Diego? Here he met and greeted a multitude of people every day. Bankers, judges, lawyers, politicians, customers and custodians all called him friend. A quote from the San Diego newspaper aptly described his roll for some 16 years.

Elevator Operator Always Makes Day Seem Brighter

Editor: In "The Neurotic's Notebook" by Mignon McLaughlin, she says, "From time to time we encounter people of a cheerful, kindly, unenvious nature. They usually run elevators."

When reading this, I cannot help but think of the sweet, white-haired gentleman who runs an elevator in a downtown bank building on Broadway in San Diego. Whenever I have

occasion to go in there I look forward to seeing him. He never fails to brighten my day, no matter how gloomy it may have been. He makes me think that life may not be as bad as 1 had thought. (BW, Lemon Grove)

When he moved to California Mr. Reynolds became an active member of a newly formed Christian Church in Chula Vista, and acted as chairman of the congregation and head of a committee to raise funds for building a new church.  He acted as elder and was a pillar of  strength for the new church and lived to celebrate the day when the mortgage taken out when he was Chairman of the Board, was paid off when his son Cecil Carl was chairman of the same board some 16 years later. Mr. Reynolds was always a fine family man and even

in his declining years took great pride and satisfaction with being with his family.

He is survived by his wife Marie, a sister, Susan Evans of Creston, the two sons Cecil and LaVerne, two granddaughters, Carol Wicks and Sharon Kersey of San Diego, and two great

granddaughters, Cherilyn and Laurel Wicks of San Diego.

We have lost a good man with the memory of his warm smile and cheery disposition, will live on in the hearts of his many friends for a long long time.

Roos, Camilia Kelly -

Esther Smith received word last week that her cousin, Camilla Kelly Roos, died very suddenly of a heart attack. She resided in an apartment at the

Mississippi Hotel in Davenport, Iowa, for several years.

Camilla was born in Lenox, Iowa, Aug. 20, 1893 and graduated in 1910.  She taught school in Lenox and Ames, Iowa then moved to Davenport and worked

for an insurance company.

She was married to Frank Roos who passed away five years ago.

She leaves to mourn a sister-in-law, Mrs. Victor Kelly, a niece and nephew and several cousins.

Swartz, George Emmett -

George Emmett Swartz, a longtime resident of the Taylor and Adams counties vicinity, died Thursday, April 8th at Corning, Iowa.

Mr. Swartz, the second son of Francis and Nancy (Roland) Swartz, was born near Bolckow, Missouri on April 29, 1886, and passed away on April 8th, 1971

at Northgate Manor in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 9 days.

The family moved from Missouri about 1899 to a farm near Lenox, Iowa. George had received his education in the rural schools. He became a member of the Mercer Center Methodist Church as a young man, later transferring his membership to the Stringtown Community Church where he was a faithful member, helping

in whatever way he could. After moving to town, he attended faithfully the Methodist Church in Lenox.

He was united in marriage to Cora Ann Riley on March 10, 1909, at the home of her parents near Mercer Center. Their entire life was spent in the Adams and Taylor Counties area.

In 1918, they moved to the family farm southeast of Stringtown where they lived for about 40 years. They then retired to the new home in Lenox. It was here that he and his wife spent many happy hours with their flowers and garden.

Mr. Swartz was a farmer his entire life and even after retirement he enjoyed his trips to the farm to watch the progress being made in the fields and

with the stock.

Two children blessed the home, Ila Ramsey of Prescott and Eugene of Lenox.

Mr. and Mrs. Swartz had the privilege of celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary with an open house held at the Stringtown Church in March, 1959, where a host of friends and relatives helped to make it a day to remember.

Mrs. Swartz passed away November 11, 1968, and George then moved to Northgate Manor to make his home.

Survivors include Ila Ramsey and her husband, Winfield, of Prescott, Eugene Swartz and his wife Estella of Lenox, a sister, Zolla David of Chino, California,

three brothers, Floyd of Billings, Montana, Claude of Lenox and Roland of Coming, and his grandchildren, Crystal Walvoord and husband Mark of Holland, Michigan, Florence Jackson and husband Leslie of Ames, Iowa, and Edwin and Galen Ramsey of Prescott.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cora, his parents Francis and Nancy Swartz, three brothers, Perry, Clark and Glee and by his grandson, Edward Eugene Swartz.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 10th at 2 p.m. from the Roland Funeral Home to Corning, Iowa, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the Lenox United Methodist Church officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Mabel Pine.

Pall, bearers were Lloyd Swartz, Robert Swartz, Byron Swartz, Elvin Riley, John Riley and Dale Purvianoe.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Vogel, Evelyn Joy Cline -

Evelyn Joy Cline daughter of Wilbur and Mary Clime, was born Nov. 11, 1917 at Adams County, near Corning, Iowa, and departed this life at the Greater Community hospital in Creston, Iowa, March 24, 1971 at the age of 53 years, 4 months and 13 days.

She was a graduate from the Corning high school and taught for three years in a rural school.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Don Vogel at Afton, la., May 17, 1939. This marriage was blessed with two daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Roger White) and Judy  (Mrs. Larry Antisdel).

Evelyn became a member of the Lincoln Center Methodist Church at the age of sixteen. She continued to work in the Methodist Church the rest of her life and was a faithful member of the W.S.C S. She held the office of secretary for several years and was treasurer at the time of her death.

Her father, the late Wilbur Cllne, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Don, two daughters and two sons-in-law, Phyllis and Roger White of Toledo, Illinois, Judy and Larry Antisdel of Corning, her mother, Mrs. Mary Cline of Corning, two brothers, Ronald Cline of Phoenix, Ariz., and Marvin Cline of Las Vegas, Nev., other relatives and friends.

Her cheerful smile and helping hand will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Funeral services were held at the Roland Funeral Home Mar. 26th at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Fry and Rev. Briley.

Interment was in Quincy cemetery.

Pallbeaders were Harry Fehrle, Drexel Lundquist, Lawrence Peterson, Jesse Givan, Junior Antisdel and Harlan Bigbee.

Weston, Charles F -

Services for Charles F. Weston of Phoenix, Arizona, will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, May 22nd, at the Bender Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Mr. Weston is the husband of Grace A. Sullivan, who formerly lived in Lenox. He died May 18th at St. Joseph's hospital in Phoenix following a lengthy illness. He was a native of

Webster City, Iowa and a 1931 graduate of Iowa State University and a C.P.A. by profession.

Mr Weston held membership in the AmVets (life membership), National Association of Retired Civil Employees and U. S. Civil Service Commission, and held a World War II Vet

rank of Captain.

He worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 25 years.

The couple had made their home in Phoenix four years following his retirement.

The remains will arrive in Lenox Friday evening and friends are invited to meet Mrs. Weston Friday evening at the Funeral Home from 8:00 to 9:00.

Woods, Thomas Elmer -

Thomas E. Woods, 67, died at the Ringgold County hospital May 15, 1971.

He was born in Taylor County, la., Jan. 27, 1904 and grew to manhood in the Athelstan vicinity.

He was united in marriage in 1947 and was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one sister and one brother.

He was drafted in the army in 1942.

Since the death of his wife, he lived one year with a sister, Mrs. Letha Schuster, then two years with a brother, Ben of Lenox.

Left to mourn his passing are two sisters, Letha Schuster of Blockton and Mary Howard of Tulsa, Okla., three brothers, Ben of Lenox, Fred of Blockton and Floyd of near Audubon.

Two sisters-in-law, Esther Woods of near Audubon and Violet Woods of Lenox, a brother-in-law, Tillman Howard of Tulsa, Okla., a number of nieces and nephews and a host

of  friends also survive.

Funeral services were held at the Athelstan Community Church Tuesday, May l8th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ward Campbell, officiating.

Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Funeral services for Thomas E. Woods were held May 18th, 1971 at the Community Church of Athelstan, Iowa. Rev. Ward Campbell officiated, and burial was in the Athelstan cemetery. The casket flag was folded and presented to Tom's brother, Ben, by members of the Blockton American Legion Post No. 443.

Thomas Elmer Woods, the son of David and Cora Downing Woods, was born in Taylor Co., Iowa, on January 27th, 1904, and passed away May 15, 1971, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.

Tom grew to adulthood in the Athelstan community area. He was called into the army in 1942. In 1947, Tom was united in marriage to Ivo Heck.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother, one sister, Jessie Woods Booker, one brother, Charles and two brothers-in-law, George Booker, Sr., and Clyde Schuster.

Since the death of his wife, Tom lived one year with a sister, Mrs. Letha Schuster and two years with a brother, Ben, of Lenox.

Tom leaves to mourn his departure, two sisters, Mrs. Letha Schuster of Blockton and Mrs. Mary Howard of Tulsa, Okla., three brothers, Ben of Lenox, Fred of Blockton and Floyd of near Audubon, Iowa and two sisters-in-law, Ester Woods of near Audubon and Violet Woods of Lenox, one brother-in- law, Tittnuan Howard of Tulsa, Okla., a number of nieces,

nephews and a host of friends.
