Bradley, Bede James -

The Rev. Fr. Bede James Bradley, O.S.B. of Kent, died at the Greater Community hospital in Creston at 8 p.m. Friday after a three-year illness. He was a Catholic priest of the Order of St. Benedict and had been a director of dramatics and speech professor at St. Benedict's college at Atchison, Kan. prior to his illness.

Father Bradley was born at Creston and grew to manhood in that community. He had lived at Atchison until he became ill and since that time made his home with his mother, Mrs. Frances Bradley Shiffer, at Kent.

Survivors include his mother and three brothers, Dennis of Afton, Lyman and Hubert Bradley of Kent, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at St. Malachy's Catholic church in Creston at 10:30 Monday morning with Rev. Fr. Venard Helget, O.S.B., officiating. A Rosary was said Sunday night.

Following the services in Creston, the body was taken to Atchison, Kansas where a funeral mass was said at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial was in St. Benedict's cemetery at Atchison.

Fr. Bradley was the son of H. and Frances Pontow Bradley and was born at Creston Dec, 27, 1909. He was 61 years at the time of his death.

Chandler, Nellie Luella Beach Bender -

Mrs. James Chandler, 57, of Van Nuys, California, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 11, 1971 in the Culver City hospital. She had suffered a heart attack earlier

in the day while at work.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Beach and was born in Taylor County on Aug. 14th.

Survivors include her husband, a son, Mike, both of Van Nuys, a daughter, Mrs. Louan Teague of Denver, Colo., two sisters, Mrs. Julian Walter and Mrs.

Elizabeth Nook of Lenox and a brother, Bill Beach of Sharpsburg.

Mrs. Walter flew to California Tuesday and her husband, Julian, Mrs. Nook and Mr. Beach were scheduled to fly there Wednesday.

Funeral services are set for Friday morning at 10 a.m. from the Church of the Chimes at Van Nuys, with burial in a cemetery there.

Chandler, Nellie Luella Beach Bender -

Nellie Luella Beach was born on August 14, 1913, in Taylor County, Iowa, the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford S. Beach, and passed away suddenly

January 11, 1971, as a result of a heart attack suffered while she was at her desk at work.

Luella was a graduate of the Lenox high school and was employed after graduation by Attorney Walter Van Houten and later as secretary for the Iowa Southern Utilities.

She was married in 1935 to Marvin Bender and they lived on a farm near Clearfield, la. until 1936, when they moved to Hollywood, California.

In 1950 she was united in marriage to James T. Chandler of Van Nuys, California and to this union were born two children, Michael, who is living at home, and Louan (Mrs. Eric Teague) of Denver, Colorado.

Mrs. Chandler had been employed for the last thirty years by Jack R. Sullivan, of Culver City, California, acting as his private secretary and bookkeeper-

accountant for the many firms he owned and managed. As Mr. Sullivan was moving to Arizona the week she died was to have been the last week of work under his employment.

She was a devoted wife and mother and always kept "in touch" with the folks back home. She was a friend to old and young alike and her nieces and nephews always

knew they would be welcomed by "Aunt Sis" when they were in California.

She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford S. Beach in 1945, and her mother, who died on November 28, 1970, and three brothers, Haldene, Donald and Dale. Immediate survivors are her husband and children, three brothers, Robert Beach of Springfield, Virginia, Walter Beach of Dallas, Texas, and Bill Beach of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. Julian Walter of Lenox, Mrs. Walter Steinke of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Clifford Nook of Sharpsburg and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Mrs. Chandler were held at the Congregational Church of the Chimes in Van Nuys, California on January 15, 1971. Those attending from this vicinity were Mr. and Mrs. Julian Walter, Bill Beach and Mrs. Clifford Nook.

Devereaux, Cressie R Simmons -

Mrs. William Devereaux, 82, a resident of the Lenox Nursing Home, died January 8th.

Cressie R. Simmons was born at Monmouth, Illinois, Nov. 22, 1888 and at the time of her death was 82 years, one month and 17 days of age. Her parents came to Iowa when she was a baby and she grew to womanhood in the Ute, Iowa vicinity, where she graduated from the Ute High school. She also attended the college for teachers at Denison, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to William P. Devereaux, of Corning, Iowa, July 7, 1909, at Hamlin, South Dakota. The couple homesteaded near Pierre, South Dakota, where a daughter, Merle (Mrs. Paul Long) was born. They lost a still-born daughter in 1912.

For many years, Mrs. Devereaux and her husband farmed northwest of Corning. In 1936 they moved to Pittsburg, California to be near their daughter and family. They remained there until the death of Mr. Devereaux in 1964, when she returned to Lenox, Iowa, to make her home with her son-in-law and daughter.

She was baptized and was a member of the Methodist Church, working actively in church affairs until the past six years.

She leaves her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Long of Lenox, four grandsons; and their wives, Bob and Peggy, of Concord, Calif., Jim and Shirley of Glenwood, la., Carroll and Patty of Rantoul, Illinois and Bill and Bonnie of Chillicothe, Missouri. Also surviving are 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Eggleston, Vera Houk -

Word was received Wednesday of the death of Mrs. Vera Eggleston, 80, in Tulsa, Okla. She had been living with a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ellen Bore.

Mrs. Eggleston was born April 20, 1891, at Bedford, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Clara Houk.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Louise Perskin and Mrs, Mary Ellen Bore, two sisters, Mrs. Verna Johnson of Bedford and Mrs. Bessie McKune of Golden, Colo., two brothers, Leo and Truman Houk, 6 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

The body is scheduled to arrive at the Shum-Novinger Funeral home in Bedford, probably on Friday.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Baptist Church in Bedford with burial in the Washington cemetery in Gravity.

Foye, Edith M -

Mrs. Edith M, Foye, 87, died Wednesday evening at the Lenox nursing home where she had been a patient since March of 1970. She had broken her hip

and was taken to the nursing home after being in the hospital for some time.

Mrs. Foye lived in Creston during the active part of her life. She was a seamstress and had worked in Menzers' alteration department. She spent

some time in Kansas. Before breaking her hip she made her home with her stepdaughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Strunce. She is survived

by her stepdaughter.

Funeral services were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Saturday afternoon, Jan 9th at 2 p.m. with Rev Wallace Nelson officiating.

Burial was in Graceland Cemetery in Creston.

Horton, Guy -

Guy Horton, 65, of Lenox, died about 5:00 o'clock p.m. Tuesday at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines. Mr. Horton had just been admitted to the hospital

when the end came.

A long-time resident of the Lenox-Clearfield areas, Mr. Horton was married May 28th, 1927. He farmed his entire life and recently had driven one of the

school buses for the local school District.

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Charles, of Denver, Colorado.

Services are pending but the funeral will be held at the Bender Funeral Home in this city with burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

Howard, Bonnie Childs Maharry -

Mrs. Ralph Howard of Oakland, California, passed away at her home Saturday.

Mrs. Howard will be remembered as Mrs. George Maharry, former resident of Lenox.

Bonnie was a sister-in-law of Mrs. Fern Bell and Mrs. Orville Bricker, also a sister of Dr. Childs, deceased, formerly of Creston.

James, Norma Jean Kemery -

Mrs. Keith James, 45, well known  Lenox resident, died Sunday, January 17th, at the Rosary hospital in Corning following a lingering illness.

Norma Jean Kemery, daughter of Roy and Katherine Kemery, was born December 24, 1925 at Athelstan, Iowa, where she spent her childhood days. She attended Athelstan school for the first eleven years and transferred to Blockton, where she graduated.

On August 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Keith James. To this union two children, a daughter and son were born, both stillborn. Their first three years of

married life, they lived at Bedford and later moved to Lenox where Norma had been employed for the past fourteen years at the Municipal Light and Water Plant.

Those surviving are her husband, Keith, her father, Roy Kemery, Danny, Linda and Mark Kemery all of Lenox, Homer, Shirley, Mary, John, Peggy and Donna Dodson and Rosemary Kemery all of Kansas City; Mo., Gene, Connie and Scott Mains of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and a host of other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her two children, Clara Katherine and Keith Raymond, and her mother Katherine Kemery.

She was a loving and warm person who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Services were held at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, January 20th, 1971 from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating.

Music was furnished by Billie Jean Barker, Maralyn Beck and Norma Paymal.

Bearers were E. W. Jones, Lowell Harding, Gerald Carruthers, Vernal Thompson, Ernest Campbell and Alford Nicholson.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Quinn, William P -

Bill Quinn, 76, a retired farmer in this community, died Sunday morning at the home of his daughter in Bisbee, Ariz. where he had gone last fall to live with his, daughter.

Mr. Quinn is survived by a daughter, Mrs Ed Holly of Bisbee, two granddaughters, a sister, Mrs. Marie DeVoe of Corning, and a brother, Ed of Spencer, Iowa. His wife, the former Bernice Schmitt, died a few years ago.

His body arrived at the Bender Funeral Home Tuesday. Mr. Quinn was born September 30, 1894,

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 10th at 2 p.m., from the Bender Funeral Home with Father Reginald Maslinski of the St. Patrick's

Catholic Church, officiating.

Bearers were Art Jones, Bill Beach, Harry Sprague, Carl Sexton, Myrle Henderson and John Schoenhair.

Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Rhoades, Admiral Ray -

Admiral Roy Rhoades, son of Newton and Mary Jane Gillespie Rhoades, was born in Page County, Iowa on October 8, 1889 and passed away Jan. 7, 1971 at

the age of 81 years and three months. Except for a short time spent in Nebraska he lived his entire life in and near the Lenox vicinity.  He attended Lenox schools

and College Springs Business College.

On October 2, 1919, he was united in marriage to Ruth A. Tripp. To this union four children were born.

Mr. Rhoades was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lenox, Iowa, a Veteran of World War I, and served for more than a quarter of a century in the

capacities of Township Assessor and as a member of the Adams County Board of Review.

The survivors include his wife, Ruth Rhoades, one son, Robert W. Rhoades of Lenox, three daughters, Mrs. Frances Moyle of Lenox, Iowa,  Mrs. John

(Florence) Garrick of Tacoma, Washington and Mrs. Curt (Jeanne) Ostrem of Ames, la. Seven grandchildren, Mary, Jim, and Elizabeth Moyle, Linda. Garrick, Jill, Mark and Dawn Ostrem and one sister, Bertha M. Rhoades of Creston also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mrs. Lila Boone and Mrs. Fannie Chandler.

Funeral services were conducted from the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox Monday, January 11th at 2 p.m., with Rev Wallace Nelson, pastor and Rev. Floyd Newbrough, of the United Methodist Church officiating.

Music was furnished by Roberta Lockhart.

Bearers were Harley Morley, Richard Notz, Harvey Wurster, Francis Wiand, Raymond Francis and Willard Campbell.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Schweers, Herman T -

Herman T. Schweers, 91, father of Art Schweers of Lenox, died Monday, Feb. 1st, at St. Anthony's hospital in Carroll, Iowa, where he had been

hospitalized nine days.

Surviving are eleven living children, 7 boys and 4 girls. His wife preceded him in death in 1957.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 10:30 at Arcadia, Iowa, with burial in that town.

Shawler, Sallie Chaney -

Mrs. Sallie Shawler, 91, died Saturday evening at the Lenox nursing home where she had been a resident for more than four years.

Mrs. Shawler, the daughter of Mary Katherine and Green Chaney, was born near Weldon, Ill., and came to this vicinity with her family when she was 11 years old.

In September, 1901, she was married to James O. Shawler, who died in September, 1944.

Survivors include four sons, James of Lenox, Orville of Creston, Robert of Petaluma; Calif., and Bryan of San Rafael, California. Also one daughter, Mrs.

Pearl Barngrover of Colorado Springs Colo., 14 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

The family has established a memorial fund for the Lenox Christian Church.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church in Lenox with Rev. Donald Briley officiating.

Music was furnished by Ruth Boltinghouse.

Bearers were Ron Spurr, Veryl Baker; Don Shawler, Carl Dawdell, Bert Shawler and Mervin Shawler.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Stoaks, Emily Lucretia Mercer -

Mrs. Andrew Stoaks, longtime resident of the Lenox area, died Saturday.

Emily Lucretia Mercer was born near Mercer Center, Iowa, April 19, 1890 to Spurgeon and Clara Mercer.

On August 12, 1907, she was united in marriage to Andrew Stoaks, who survives. Six children were born to this marriage. Two daughters preceded her in

death.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Wm (Veldeva) Fonner of Sidell, Illinois and three sons, Marvin of Maryville, Mo., Vernon of Sacramento, California, and Donald of Oakland, Iowa. One son-in-law, seven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, 9 nieces and nephews, also mourn her passing.

Mrs. Stoaks united with the Mercer Center Methodist church in 1906 and transferred to the Lenox Methodist Church in 1913 where she was an active member

until she suffered a stroke about six years ago. Her smile and uncomplaining nature will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Lenox Tuesday, January 12th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Helen Brokaw, Billie Jean Barker and Norma Paymal.

Bearers were Don Tully, Orville Rogers, Harold Welch, Clarence Olson, Reldon Ambrose and Clarence Haering,

Burial was in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Teply, Dessa Mary Hayes -

Mrs. Frank Teply, 62, former Lenox resident, died in Des Moines Tuesday from complications following surgery.

Her maiden name was Dessa Hayes and she was raised in the Lenox area.

She lived on a farm near Lineville and left there to live in Des Moines sixteen years.

Survivors include her  husband, Frank, a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Helton and 8, son, Wm., all of Des Moines. Six grandchildren also survive, as well as

two sisters, Mrs. Verna Phillips and Mrs. Gertrude Beatty of Lenox and a brother, Ralph Hayes of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday, morning from St. Anthony Church in Des Moines and a one o'clock service will be held at St. Patrick's

Catholic Church in Lenox,

A Rosary will be said Friday night at Tonini Funeral home in Des Moines.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lenox.

Tepley, Dessa Mary Hayes -

Dessa Mary Teply, daughter of James P. and Emma A. Hayes, was born April 9, 1908 on a farm southeast of Lenox. The family moved to Lenox in 1914 where she attended the Lenox school, graduating with the class of 1927.

She was married to Frank L. Teply on March 6, 1935. They farmed near Lenox, Mt. Ayr and Lineville, moving to Des Moines about 20 years ago.

Mrs. Teply died of complications following surgery at Mercy hospital Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1971.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, a son, William, and a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Helton. Six grandchildren of [Des] Moines, two sisters, Verna Phillips

and Gertrude Beatty of Lenox and a brother, Ralph Hayes of Des Moines, also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arthur Hayes of Yuma, Ariz.

Funeral services were held in Des Moines at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and a short service at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox. Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lenox.

Pallbearers were Greg Teply, Alan Helton, Bill Teply, Lanny Helton, Otto Hayes and Gene Helton.

Vanderpluym, Elizabeth B McManus -

Services for Elizabeth B. Vanderpluym, daughter of John and Mary Ann McManus, were held January 9, 1971, from the Immaculate Conception Church at

Maloy with burial in Calvary cemetery, Creston. Rev. Father M. J. Culhane, officiated.

She was born March 24, 1888 in Illinois and departed this life January 6, 1971 at the Ringgold County hospital, Mt. Ayr. As a small child she moved

with her family to a farm near Diagonal.

On April 16, 1917, she was united in marriage to Louis Vanderpluym living on the same farm until January of 1969, when they located in Mt. Ayr.

Left to mourn are her husband, one son, Paul, four daughters, Veldeva Morris, Martena Mobley, Lucille Johnson, Frances Ricker, a niece Catherine, Morley, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, other nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were an infant daughter, her parents, one sister and six brothers.
