George Ahren, also 16, and a high school sophomore saw the two boys at the garage about one o'clock.  He returned to school but noticed that Jerry and Dean were not present.  At the break between classes  he asked permission of the school principal, Mr Max Myers, to run across to the garage. He returned almost immediately to the office, reporting that Dean and Jerry were asleep and he could not arouse them.

Mr Myers immediately responded to the emergency and all was done that could have been. He called Dr. Boulden. Dr Keigh Howland, assistant county medical officer; was called. The resuscitator for the fire department was ordered and used immediately, but both doctors agreed that there was no chance to revive the boys.

Dr. Howland estimated that they had been  dead for an hour. Tools in the garage indicated that the boys had been working on the car. It was a cold day,

and they evidently started the motor in the closed building to get warm.  They were sitting in the front seat of the car and must have both been completely overcome by the gas at the same time.
