Stephens, Mary J. Mullin –

Mary J. Stephens, second daughter of Milton M. and Sarah J. Mullin, was born Feb. 1, 1860, near Tiskilwa, Ill., and departed this life Sept. 5, 1938, age 78

years, 7 months and 4 days.

When 16 years of age her parents moved to a farm near Cromwell, Iowa where she resided until Dec. 23, 1880, when she was married to James E.

Stephens who preceded her in death in 1899. After residing on a farm near Lenox for two years they moved to Creston, and from there to Cromwell. In 1893 they moved to Lenox where she has since made her home.

Four children survive: Mrs. Aurora B. Ryerson, Red Oak, la.; Mrs. Pearl Smith of Rushville, Mo.; Mrs. Arline Volling of Sheldon Wis.; and M. Hugh Stephens

of Peoria, Ill. Also surviving are three granddaughters, six grandsons, five great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Delia Lane of Omaha, Nebr.; Mrs. Elva Swain of Alskilwa, Ill.; and Mrs. Luella Luse of Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Frank Mullin and George Mullin, both of Cromwell, together with many nieces and nephews.

For the past seven years Mrs. Stephens spent the winters in the homes of her children, but insisting on returning to her own home at the first sign of

spring. Her chief interest in life was always her home and family.

Stricken with a heart attack Wednesday which was followed by pneumonia and a stroke, God in his mercy relieved her suffering by sailing her home Monday evening. Three of her children were present and able to minister

to her needs at this time.

While not unusually active in church work, she was a devoted reader of the Bible until failing eyesight prevented. Her race is run, her work is done and who will say, "not well done,"

The lovely life-story of Mary Mullin Stephens affords as active exemplification of the "worthy woman" described in the thirty-first chapter of the book of Proverbs. "Her children rise up and call her blessed and  her husband also and he praises her."

Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 7, in the local Methodist church impressive funeral services for Mrs. Stephens were conducted by Dr. A, L. Davidson, assisted by Rev. R. M. Fagan.
