Last
rites for Charles Thomas Dawson,
91, were held January 21, 1984 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with
Pastor Duane Hunt officiating. Interment was in Brethren Cemetery, near
Sheridan, Mo.

Dawson died January 17, 1984 at
Bedford Manor in Bedford, Ia.
Charles
Thomas Dawson, son of Thomas
Jefferson Dawson and Maria
Louise Swiger Dawson, was born
near Sheridan in Worth County, Missouri on February 15, 1892. He grew to
maturity in the Sheridan area, where he attended the public school and the
Christian Church, and he lived in rural Sheridan nearly all of his life.
In
December 1917 he was united in marriage to Alda Ruth Brogan at his sister's home in St. Joseph, Missouri, and
they lived on a farm west of Sheridan until Alda died. They raised his great nephew, Harold
Waidner, from the age of four.
On
July 30, 1946 Charlie was
united in marriage to Mary Ethel Townsend Raper in Topeka, Ks., and they lived on the farm near
Sheridan. Charlie was engaged
in farming all his life until he retired, and he also did much electrical and
carpentry work.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alda; four brothers; five sisters; his stepson, Curtis
Raper; and his stepdaughter, Vivian
[Florence] Raper.
Left
to cherish his memory are his wife, [Mary] Ethel; his
stepdaughter and her husband, Marvin and Ellen [Pearl] Phillips of Salisbury, Maryland; his great nephew, Harold
Waidner; his sister-in-law, Gladys
Jenkins; three grandchildren;
five great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
He
was a member of the Brethren Church west of Sheridan, Missouri and he later
attended the Hamilton Memorial Missionary Church in Bedford, a church which he
very diligently helped to build.
Charlie
Dawson was a very unique man, a
man of exceptionally strong will and yet gentleness. He always liked to sing as
loudly as he could, especially hymns. Charlie loved children, and crowds of neighborhood
children would regularly play in the Dawson yard. After retiring, he began a
hobby of collecting and repairing clocks, which eventually led to building many
beautiful clocks of his own. He enjoyed the special care and precision which
this skill required. Charlie displayed
a special adoration for his dear wife Ethel, and the two of them shared an unusual intimacy
and closeness.
Charles
Thomas Dawson was truly
"one-of-a-kind," and he will be greatly missed by his family and
friends.

Laurel
Casper Howard was born in
Wisconsin Feb. 3; 1854, and passed away at his home on Saxon Road, St. Joseph,
Missouri, at 2 o'clock p. m., December14, 1921, after a brief illness, aged 67
years, 10 months and 11 days.
When
a child he came to Clark county, Iowa, where he spent the most of his life.
He
was married to Mary [Eunice] Palmer at Hopeville Iowa, March 4,1875. To this union six children were born—E.
E. Howard, of Creston, Iowa; Maud and LeAnna, of St. Joseph, Mo.; Ora [Palmer] Howard, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mrs. J.[ohn] H.
Ledgerwood, of Kent, Iowa, and O.
J. Howard, of Sacramento,
California, all of whom were present except the last named.
Besides
his companion and children he leaves one brother of Lincoln, Nebraska; eight
grandchildren, nephews, E. K. and W. C. Wilson of Blockton, and other nephews, a niece and
friends to mourn his death.
Short
funeral services were held at the home at 9 o'clock Sunday morning, conducted
by Rev. J. Arthur Dillinger, pastor, of the Wyatt Park Christian Church, St.
Joseph, and services were held at the Blockton Christian church at 2: 30 Sunday
afternoon, conducted by Rev. Frank R. Gillihan, pastor of the First Christian
Church of Grant City. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

L. [aurel] C. [asper] Howard [Mary
Eunice Palmer] was called to her
reward May 20, 1938, at St. Joseph after a short illness.
She
was born Jan. 18, 1857, at Hopeville, Clarke county, Iowa. At the time of her
death she was aged 81 years, 6 months and 2 days.
She
was married to Laurel Casper Howard March 4, 1875. She is survived by six children, E. E. Howard, Kent; Maude E. Howard, Edmund, Okla.; Ora P. [almer] Howard, Cedar
Falls; Mrs. John Ledgerwood,
Edmund, Okla.; O. J. Howard,
Mystic, and Leanna Howard, St.
Joseph, Mo.; nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs.
J. H. Felton, Princeville, Ill.,
and Jennie Palmer,
Bloomington, Ill., and one brother, R. E. Palmer, Denver, Colo., and several nieces and nephews
and a host of friends.
She
became a member of the Christian church when she was 14 years of age and was
affiliated with that church the rest of her life.
Funeral
services were held at the Fleeman Chapel, St. Joseph, Monday at 11 o'clock and
at the Christian church, Blockton, at 2:30. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton, beside
her husband who preceded her in death seventeen years ago.

L. Owens Rites In Hopkins
Leonard
Leroy Owens, 82, died Saturday
evening, Feb. 23, at the St. Francis hospital, Maryville, where he had been a
patient nearly three weeks. Mr. Owens had been in failing health the past two years. He suffered a stroke
Feb. 21, which was followed by death two days later.
Funeral
services were conducted Feb. 27 at the Hopkins Church of Christ. Jerry Samples,
Hopkins, assisted by David Tapp, La Grange, Kentucky, officiated. Interment was
in Hopkins cemetery.
Leonard
Owens, the youngest child of Daniel
and Amanda Renfro Owens, was born
April 17, 1880. He lived near Quitman, Mo., until at the age of thirteen he
moved with his mother, brother and three sisters to north of Hopkins, his
father having died when he was three years old. Later the family moved to the
Unity community east of Hopkins where he lived for over sixty years.
He
was married Feb. 22, 1905, to Mae New, who survives. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Harold
Crane (Eula) of Salt Lake City,
Utah, and four, sons, Dale, Paul and Earl, who live near Hopkins, and Carl, who gave his life while serving with the U.S. Navy in 1944. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and 34
great grandchildren. His mother, brother and sisters preceded him in death.
Mr.
Owens had been a member of the Church of Christ for the past fifty-five
years and was well known as a faithful Christian.
Mr.
and Mrs. Owens celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary with open house in 1955. They had been married 58
years Feb. 22.
Mr.
Owens took great pride in his
country home northeast of Hopkins, which has always been considered an
attractive, well-kept residence.

Mrs.

word of the death of her son, Curtis Raper, on March 19 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Funeral services were held
March 22 in Council Bluffs with interment there.
His
survivors include his wife, Eva;
mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dawson; two sisters, Vivian [Florence] Raper, Bedford, Mrs. Ellen [Pearl] Phillips, Salisbury, Md.; aunt, Mrs. Bill Jenkins; and two uncles, Roy and Garland Raper.

Funeral
services were held for Curtis Raper,
52, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, on March 22, at the McCurdy Funeral Home in Council
Bluffs, with the Rev. Thomas Simmons, pastor of the Valley View Baptist Church,
officiating. Mr. Raper died
March 19 in his Council Bluffs home. Interment was at Ridgewood Cemetery in
Council Bluffs.
He
was a native of Bedford and the son of Mrs. Charles Dawson [Mary Ethel Townsend] of Bedford. He was united in marriage on Apr.
27, 1943 to Eva Mae Hinton.
Mr.
Raper attended high school at
Bedford. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he was
involved in the European Theater, and reached the rank of S / S. He received
several citations including European, African--Middle Eastern ribbon w/6 Battle
Stars, Air Medal, W20AK, LCAF Clusters, Good Conduct Medal and Overseas Bar.
He
was a member of the Masonic Lodge, AF and AM 156 of Bedford, served as Quarter
Master of the VFW, Bedford, and the Elks Club 551 of Council Bluffs.
He
was employed for 24 years with the Title Guaranty Company of Council Bluffs
where he was manager during all that time.
Survivors
include his wife, Eva; his
mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Charles [Thomas] Dawson [Mary Ethel Townsend] of Bedford; two sisters, Vivian [Florence]
Raper of Bedford, and Ellen
[Pearl] Phillips, brother-in-law Marvin
Phillips, both of Salisbury, Md.;
aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jenkins of Bedford; uncles, Roy Raper, Dallas, Texas, and Garland Raper, Jackson, Michigan.
Curtis will be missed by those who loved him, especially
the children on his street whom he loved so much.

Mrs.
Garland Raper of Mason City who,

T.
[ine] H. [ampton] Raper of the Athelstan community died at his home on
Tuesday, December 20 after a short illness.
Last
rites were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service Home on State Street at
two o’clock Saturday afternoon, December 24, with burial in the Platteville
cemetery. Rev. Colvin Caughey of the Bedford Baptist church officiated. Members of Bethany Masonic Lodge at
Blockton, of which Mr. Raper had been a member many years, gave their services at the last rites and
assisted at the burial.
Tine
Hampton Raper was born in Taylor
County, Iowa, on November 25, 1878 and died at the age of 82 years, 25
days. His entire life, with the
exception of a short time in Missouri, was spent in Taylor and Ringgold
counties. He had lived on the farm where he died northwest of Athelstan for 50
years.
On
October 22, 1896 he was married to Floy Reed of Athelstan, Iowa, who preceded him in death on
Oct. 20, 1957 after 53 years of marriage. To this union were born three sons, Wayland of Kansas City, Mo., LeRoy of Dallas, Texas, and Garland of Jackson, Michigan, who with their wives mourn
his departure. There are also
seven grandchildren, Vivian [Florence] Raper of Bedford, Curtis Raper of Council Bluffs, Ellen [Pearl] Phillips of Baltimore, Md., [Leona] Jolene Braun of Bensenville, Ill., Janice Rider of Dallas, Texas, Dennis and Patty Raper of Jackson, Mich. There are also four great
grandchildren.
He
also leaves three half-brothers and a half-sister, Ermin Swett of South Sioux City, Nebr., Lena Kenyon and Leonard Swett of Ainsworth, Nebr., Earl Swett of Chadron, Nebr.

Vivian
Florence Raper, daughter of the
late Wayland Raper and Mrs.
[Mary] Ethel [Townsend] Raper Dawson,
was born at Athelstan, Iowa on March 26, 1918.
She
lived in Athelstan, Iowa, Topeka, Kansas, and Sheridan, Mo. and grew to
maturity in Bedford, Iowa where she attended the public school and the Baptist
and Missionary Churches. She had been a resident of Bedford Manor since 1975.
Vivian accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour as
a young child; she had a great love for God and for His Word. She attended the
Hamilton Memorial Missionary Church, and was baptized later in her life by Rev.
Larry Secor. As long as her health permitted, she faithfully attended Sunday
school and Church.
She
was preceded in death by her father, Wayland Raper, and her brother, Curtis Raper.
Left
to cherish her memory are: her mother and stepfather, Charlie and [Mary]
Ethel [Townsend] Dawson of
Bedford; her sister and brother-in-law, Marvin and Ellen [Pearl] Phillips of Salisbury, Maryland; her aunt, Gladys
Jenkins of Bedford; a number of
nieces and nephews.
She
was a gentle and kindhearted woman, who enjoyed children and had a love for all
people. Vivian will be greatly
missed by her loved ones, but they rejoice that she is now with her Lord Jesus.

84, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held December 12 at the Sharpsburg

died December 10 at a nursing home in Lenox. Interment was at Fairview
Cemetery, Lenox.

was born August 5, 1889 on a farm north of Gravity near the Oak Hill Church,
where he spent his childhood.
He
was united in marriage to Violet Susan Knott, October 17, 1906. To this union five children
were born, Mrs. Faye Ratliff,
Sharpsburg; twin daughters, Hazel of
Bedford and Helen deceased, Bill and Donald of Sharpsburg.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, daughter, Helen,
his parents, one brother, William,
and four sisters, Mertie, Theresa, Dora and Fannie.
At
an early age he joined the Oak Hill Church and later transferred to the
Sharpsburg Methodist. Church.
He
has farmed and lived in the Gravity and Sharpsburg community all of his life.
He
is survived by his four children, one sister, Ester Welch, of Clarinda; a half brother, Mark Scott, of Aranses Pass, Texas; one son-in-law, Leonard
Ratliff; two daughters-in-law, Nellie
and Doris Scott; 11
grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
He
was a good neighbor, a kind and loving father. He will be greatly missed by his
family and friends.

services for Mrs. Charles (Vera Sarah) Titus, 66, of Hopkins were held January 21 at the

Municipal Hospital, Clarinda. Interment was at Nodaway Memorial Garden at
Maryville.

Sarah Titus, daughter of Norman and Elizabeth Kermoade, was
born October 13, 1907, at Rulo, Nebr. She was a member of the Methodist Church
in Rulo.
On
May 27, 1924, she was united in marriage to Charles [Edward] Titus and to this union 12 children were born.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister, and four
grandchildren.
She
