DAVID L. (BUS) COOK

David L. (Bus) Cook, 71, Omaha, Neb., passed away Tuesday at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 7 at the Bedford United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Peters officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Mr. Cook taught and coached in southwest Iowa since 1953 and retired from the Council Bluffs School system in 1984 where he had been teaching since 1962.

He was a veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie A. [rlene Gillette] Cook, who died in June of 1990. They had been married for 50 years. Also preceding him in death was a son, Ronald L. in 1988, and a brother, Robert L. who died in 1968.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Linda Cook of Omaha, Neb. and Roger and Kathleen Cook of McMinnville, Ore.; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Miller of Bedford, Iowa and Phyllis Mitchell of Sacramento, Calif, and one brother, Charles of Medford, Ore.

David L. “Bus” Cook

David L. [eroy] "Bus" died January 4, 1994 at the University Medical Center in Omaha, NE. He had been residing at Paxton Manor in Omaha.

Mr. Cook was born January 31, 1922, in Blanchard, Iowa He was the eldest son of Sam [uel David Daniel] and [Flossie] Ellen [McGinnis] Cook of Hopkins. He graduated from Hopkins High School in 1940 and from Northwest Missouri State University in 1953. David taught and coached in Southwest Iowa since 1953 and retired from the Council Bluffs School System in 1984 where he had been teaching since 1962. He was a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marjorie A. (Gillette) Cook, in June of 1990, and one son, Ronald L., who passes away in 1988.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Linda Cook of Omaha, NE, Roger and Kathleen Cook of McMinnville, OR, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Two sisters, Mildred Miller of Bedford, IA, Phyllis Mitchell of Sacramento, CA and one brother, Charles of Medford, OR.

David and his wife Marjorie owned two restaurants in Bedford in the late 1940's and early 1950's. David and his family left Bedford in 1953 when he began his teaching and coaching career.

The family suggest memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

Services for Marjorie A. [rlene] Cook, 66, Council Bluffs, were held at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home June 9 with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa. Mrs. Cook died June 7, 1990 at her home in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Marjorie Arlene Gillette, daughter of Glenn [Lorene] Gillette and Anzel [Celeste] Tointon Gillette was born in rural Taylor County, Iowa January 31, 1924.

She grew to maturity in the Bedford community where she attended the public school and the Methodist Church.

On October 9, 1940 she was united in marriage to David L. [eroy] "Bus" Cook at Princeton, Mo. and they resided in Des Moines, Iowa; Bedford, Iowa; Clearmont, Mo.; Prescott, Iowa; Carson, Iowa before moving to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1962 where they have continued to reside.

Three sons were born to this union: Larry [David], Ronald and Roger.

She was a housewife, homemaker and retail sales clerk in Brandies and Younkers store for 23 years.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her son Ronald; a brother Charles and a granddaughter Elizabeth Ann.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, David "Bus" Cook of the home; son Larry [David] and his wife Linda of Omaha, Neb.; son Roger and his wife Kathy of South Bend, Wash.; grandchildren Robie, Ronnie, Lourie, Dan, Jeff, David and Debbie; six great grandchildren; her father, Glenn [Lorene] Gillette of Bedford, Iowa; two brothers, [Gailen] Duane Gillette of Sun City, Ariz, and Robert [James] Gillette of Greenfield, Iowa; a sister, Barbara [Jean] Acker of Greenfield and a daughter-in-law Margaret Gillette; other relatives and friends.

Her family and friends will remember her as a kind and considerate loved one and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Obituary

Loren E. Gillett, son of G. [eorge] M. and Mary [Mercy] Ann [Quinby] Gillett, was born in Bedford, Ia., Nov. 19, 1871, and died at the Lister Hospital in Omaha, Neb., Tuesday December 30, 1919.

The mother of deceased died very shortly after he was born, so he was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Liggett, and there reared to manhood. While a boy he was converted and joined the Methodist church.

On May 28, 1902, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma May Cornell of Fairfield. To this union was born one son Geo. Russell. Three weeks after the birth of their son, Mrs. Gillett passed away.

Our friend is survived by this son, one sister, Mrs Jennie Glassmann, and one brother, Henry [Ulysses] Gillett of New Market.

The bereaved have our most sincere sympathy in this hour of their sorrow.

The body was brought here Thursday and services were held in the M E. church, conducted by Rev. Wilson. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

A Death at Blockton.

Sunday afternoon at about 6 o'clock T. [raverse] R. Gillett, an attorney at Blockton, died from an attack of cerebral spinal meningitis, after a sickness of about two weeks. Mr. Gillett was a rising young attorney, and his early demise is to be greatly deplored. He leaves a wife and babe.

Mrs. Gillette Dies At Her Home Here

Mrs. H. [enry] U. [lysses] Gillette, 65 [75], resident of Bedford for many years, was found dead on a cot at her home Tuesday evening by her daughter, Miss Alleen Gillette, when she arrived home from her work in the county welfare office.

Mrs. Gillette [Addie Agler] had been in poor health for a number of years and had been much worse this fall, suffering from a heart ailment.

Surviving are five children, George of Sharpsburg, John of Villisca, Glenn and Alleen of Bedford and Mrs. Gladys Griffith, Bedford, also a sister Mrs. Emma [Anna Mae] Benson of St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be held at the Shum Funeral Home at two o'clock Friday afternoon, January 2, conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye. Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery.

Gillette Rites Held Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. H. [enry] U. [lysses] Gillette, who died at her home in Bedford Tuesday, Dec. 30, were held Friday afternoon at the Shum Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Addie Agler, daughter of James [Daniel] and Lydia [Maxwell] Agler, was born near Bedford, Iowa, September 16, 1872, being aged 75 years, 3 months and 14 days, at the time of her death.

With the exception of one year in Kansas, she spent her entire life in Page and Taylor counties. Her early life was spent near Bedford.

On April 10, 1895, she was married to Henry U. [lysses] Gillette and they lived near Hawleyville for three years. The family then moved to New Market, where they resided until 1920 when they moved to Bedford, where she had since resided.

To them six children were born: John [Edward] of Villisca, George [Mars] of Sharpsburg, Glen [Lorene], Gladys Griffith and Alleen of Bedford, and Verne [Lloyd] who passed away in April of 1947. Her husband preceded her in death in 1931.

She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna [Mae] Benson of St. Joseph, Mo., twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

She was converted in childhood and became a member of the Christian Church, but later transferred her membership to the Methodist Church, of which she is still a member.

Last Rites Held December 16 for Anzel Gillette

Funeral services for Mrs. Glenn (Anzel) Gillette, 72, of Bedford, held December 16 at Shum-Novinger Funeral home in Bedford, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mrs. Gillette died at University Hospital in Omaha, December 13, 1973. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Anzel Celeste Tointon, daughter of Charles and Stella Phelps Tointon, was born on a farm north of Bedford, Iowa November 15, 1901.

She grew to adulthood in the community where she was born and attended the public school of the county and Bedford High School.

On October 1, 1921 she was united in marriage to Glenn L. [orene] Gillette at Maryville, Missouri. Five children were born to bless their home and all were present at the 50th Wedding Anniversary of their parents on October 1, 1971 to help them share the joy of this occasion.

They lived on the farm until they moved into Bedford where they have since continued to reside.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Charles [Henry], who passed away November 22, 1973, and a great granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Cook.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of the home and two daughters and two sons: Marjorie and her husband, David Cook, of Council Bluffs, Ia.; [Gailen] Duane Gillette and his wife, Roberta [McGarvan], of Council Bluffs, Ia.; Robert [James] of Castro Valley, Calif. and Barbara [Jean] and her husband, Vere Acker, of Greenfield, Ia.; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Rebekah Lodge and American Legion Auxiliary. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Last Rites Held Nov. 25 for Charles Gillette

Funeral services for Charles Henry Gillette, 42, of Bedford, held November 25 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr. Gillette died November 22, 1973, at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa.

Charles Henry Gillette, son of Glen [Lorene] and Anzel Tointon Gillette, was born near Bedford, Iowa, November 20, 1931.

He grew to adulthood in the Bedford Community where he graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1953.

In June of 1953, he answered the call of his country, and served 17 months in Korea. He completed his army service and was discharged in April of 1955.

Following his return home he was employed by the Cudahy Packing Company and then by the Kaiser Construction Company where he worked for 15 years until his failing health caused him to retire from that work.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, two brothers and two sisters: Marjorie and her husband, David L. [eroy] Cook, of Council Bluffs, Ia., [Gailen] Duane Gillette and his wife, Roberta [McGarvan] of Council Bluffs, Ia., Robert J. [ames] Gillette of Castro Valley, Calif., Barbara [Jean] and her husband, Vere Acker, of Greenfield, Ia.; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #164 Bedford.

Charles was a kind and loving son and brother and a considerate friend of all who knew him.

He will be sadly missed by family and acquaintances.

F. M. Gillette, 64, Buried in Waverly

Funeral services for F. [ayette] M. Gillette, 64, who died at his home in Bedford Thursday, Oct. 24, were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Saturday morning conducted by Rev. D. E. Johnson of Slater, Mo. The body was taken to Waverly, Iowa, where funeral services were held Monday and where burial was made.

Fayette M., son of Marquis [Fayette] and Olive [Walling] Gillette, was born Sept. 16, 1871 in Frederika township, Bremer county, Iowa.

In September 1894 he was married to Miss Grace [Amelia] Ferris of Waverly, Iowa. To them were born seven children, three daughters and four sons. Three children preceded their father in death: Lee E. Gillette and Charlotte Bell, dying when young and Mrs. Lena Rust in 1921.

Surviving with the wife are four children: Fred E. Gillette of Marion, Iowa; Mrs. Clara [Grace] Mason of Independence, Iowa; Courtney K. Gillette of Narberth, Penn.; and Earl Gillette of Los Angeles, Calif. Also five grandchildren, Wayne, Aura and Maurice Mason of Independence and Louise and Lula Gillette of Marion; and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Gillette was a member of the Baptist church in Bedford.

George Gillette Last Rites Held February 29

Funeral services for George M. [ars] Gillette, 74, of Sharpsburg, held February 29 at the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church, were conducted by Rev. Ronald Kinzler. Mr. Gillette died February 27, 1972, at Rosary Hospital in Corning. Masonic rites were conducted by Fremont Lodge No. 343 A. F. and A. M. with interment at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

George Mars Gillette was born Oct. 16, 1897. He was born in [a] sod house near Hawleyville, Iowa, in Page County, son of Henry [Ulysses] and Addie [Agler] Gillette. He spent most of his life in Taylor County.

He was united in marriage to Ada Loretta Cree, Sept. 9, 1917. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Martin (Darlene) Taylor of Muscatine, two sons, Ivan and Dean [Lemar] of Davenport, Ia., and Mrs. Lois [Ioma] Ferris (deceased).

George was a blacksmith in Sharpsburg from 1925 to 1955 when he was forced to give it up because of his health.

He was a member of the Methodist church in Sharpsburg and attended while he was able.

He was a past master of the Right Angle Lodge No. 348 of Conway and transferred to the Fremont Lodge No. 343 at Lenox.

Survivors include his wife, Retta of Sharpsburg; two sons, Ivan and Dean [Lemar]; a daughter Darlene; a brother, Glenn [Lorene]; two sisters, Gladys Griffith and Alleen Longfellow, all of Bedford; 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Lois [Ioma] Ferris, his parents, and two brothers, John [Edward] and Vern [Lloyd].

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

GLENN L. GILLETTE

Funeral services for Glenn L. Gillette were conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings and Rev. Stephen Peters Tuesday, Sept. 24,1991 at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.

Glenn L. [orene] Gillette, son of Henry U. [lysses] Gillette and Addie Agler Gillette was born near New Market, Taylor County Iowa on May 29, 1899 and departed this fife September 20, 1991 at Mercy Hospital in Corning at the age of 92 years, three months and 21 days.

He grew to maturity in the New Market area and attended the New Market Public Schools and was graduated from high school there. He also attended the New Market Methodist Church.

On October 1,1921 he was united in marriage to Anzel C. [eleste] Tointon in Maryville, Mo. and they lived on farms until they moved to Bedford to reside. To this union five children were born: Marjorie, [Gailen] Duane, Charles H. [enry], Robert J. [ames] and Barbara J. [ean].

He engaged in farming until he moved to Bedford where he was employed by the Cudahy Packing Company and later by the Lisle Manufacturing Company of Clarinda, Iowa until his retirement. During the time he lived on the farm he processed sorghum molasses from cane grown in the community for himself and other people and it was of the very finest quality.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife who died in 1973; two sons, Charles H. [enry] and Robert J. Gillette and a daughter Marjorie Cook; three brothers, John [Edward], George [Mars] and Vern [Lloyd] and a sister Gladys Griffith who died on September 18, 1991; also a grandson preceded him in death.

Left to cherish his memory are a son, [Gailen] Duane Gillette and his wife Roberta [McGarvan] of Sun City, Ariz.; a daughter, Barbara J. [ean] Acker and her husband Vere of Greenfield, Iowa; a sister, Alleen Longfellow of Bedford, Iowa; eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; son-in-law, David L. [eroy] Cook; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

The family and loved ones will remember him as a good husband, kind and loving father, brother, friend and neighbor and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Mrs. Gillette Dies At Oelwein, Iowa

Mrs. Grace [Amelia Ferris] Gillette, a former resident of Bedford and mother of Mrs. Kent Mason [Clara Grace], who was also a former resident, died in the Mercy Hospital at Oelwein, Iowa, Saturday, Jan. 22, at the age of 65 years.

The funeral services were held at the Kaiser Funeral home in Waverly, Iowa, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, conducted by Rev. Clark M. Crowell of Cedar Falls. Burial was in the Arlington cemetery at Waverly.

Mr. and Mrs. [Fayette] Gillette were residents of Bedford for several years and made many friends while here. After Mr. Gillette's death, she returned to Waverly and later went to Cedar Falls where she was employed as a housekeeper.

GLADYS V. GRIFFITH

Funeral services for Gladys V. Griffith were held Saturday, Sept. 21, 1991 at 2 p.m. at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at Lexington Cemetery, rural Taylor County, Iowa.

Gladys V. Gillette, daughter of Henry U. [lysses] Gillette and Addie Agler Gillette, was born near New Market, Taylor County, Iowa on September 9, 1902 and departed this life September 18, 1991 at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs at the age of 89 years and nine days.

She grew to maturity in the New Market area where she attended the public school and the Methodist Church.

On November 23,1921 she was united in marriage to Elvin H. [arold] Griffith at the Methodist Parsonage in Riverton, Iowa and they lived on farms in Taylor County all of their married life where she was a housewife and a homemaker---sharing in the daily farm activities.

To this union two daughters were born: Dorothy Ann and Doris Elaine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elvin who died January 18, 1968; three brothers, John [Edward], George [Mars], Vern [Lloyd] Gillette and an infant granddaughter and a great step-grandson.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Dorothy Ann Cox and her children, Larry David and Linda Decker and families; Doris Mullen and her children; Steven, Sandra Rankin, Richard, William, Rebecca Wilson, Brenda Hyder and families; a sister, Alleen Longfellow, a brother, Glen [Lorene] Gillette, died Friday, Sept. 20; a sister-in-law, Retta Gillette; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and World War I American Legion Auxiliary.

She will be sadly missed by family and loved ones.
