Frank Akers, 65, Last Rites Held March 28

Funeral   services for Frank Abram Akers, 65, of Gravity, were conducted at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford March 30 by Rev. Robert Truitt.    Mr.   Akers died suddenly of a    heart attack while working at the    Earl    May   Nurseries   in       Shenandoah on March 28.  Interment   was    at   Washington    Cemetery, Gravity.

Frank Abram Akers was born    May 19, 1907 to Robert H. and Eva McCracken Akers and was    united in marriage to Miss Jessie Lacox at Red Oak, Iowa   on December 7, 1928.

He has been a lifelong resident of Taylor County and has been actively involved in farming during his lifetime.

His is survived by his wife; son, Francis Akers of Gravity; daughter, Mrs.    Dick    (Jean) Beemer of Gravity; four grandchildren: Mrs.    Roy    (Dixie) Weeda of Bellevue, Nebr., Mrs. Scott (Diana) Sheffield of Peru, Ind., Wayne Akers in Military service in California and unable to return for the funeral service and Jeff Akers at home; two great grandchildren, Troy and Kristie Weeda; sister, Mary Devol of DeWitt, Nebr.; and many friends.

Preceding him in death were    his parents and one sister, Mrs. Marjorie Cernen.

EDNA MARIE CORNELL

Mrs. Edna Marie Cornell, 92, of Eufaula, Okla. passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 1994 in Eufaula. Her services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 1994. Graveside services were conducted at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford with Pastor Lester Johnson of the First Baptist Church officiating. Services were directed by Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cornell was born in Bedford, Iowa November 18, 1901 to Thomas and Martha Fitch Parker, and was married to Charles W. Cornell, Sr. in Bedford, Iowa. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles who died in 1962.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Marcia Cornell of Checotah, Okla.; two granddaughters, Sandra Marie Carson of Ft. Collins, Colo, and Kirsha Laura Hunnicutt of Tulsa, Okla.; and five great grandchildren.

Death Followed Lingering Illness

—Leaves Eight Children

Mrs. Lantie [Orlantha Azalea Watson] Crull, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 6 at her home in Sheridan after a lingering illness. She was the mother of eight children, all of whom survive her. Mr. [John R.] Crull preceded her in death several years ago [June 2, 1931]. She was a member of the Sheridan Christian Church, where her funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. B. Day of Pickering. Burial was in the Sheridan cemetery. Her children were all present for the services.

She also left a sister, Mrs. Dessie Bowen of Scotts Bluff, Nebr., and two brothers, Vernimon Watson of Clay Center, Nebr., and Willis C. [oleman] Watson of Sheridan.

Mrs. Lloyd Duncan Rites Held Oct. 1 In California

Mrs. Lloyd E. (Geretta A) Duncan, 67, of West Los Angeles, Calif., was killed instantly in a two car crash September 26, 1973 at 10 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan had just left the home of his mother in Yucaipa, Calif. The right side of their car was crushed by a car going through a stop sign. The driver is being held for drunken driving. Mr. Duncan suffered shock, bruises and fractured ribs, but is now released from the hospital.

Mrs. Halbert [Gene] Hensley, Bedford, a sister, and Mrs. Alfred Orme, sister-in-law, Hopkins, left at once for the service held in the Chapel of the Dawn, Santa Monica, Calif. October 1.

Geretta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Orme [Arria Eveline Bordner], was born April 17, 1906 in Taylor Co., Iowa.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and Emblem Club Elks Lodge.

A 1924 graduate of Bedford High School she did home nursing for a number of years. She loved to care for children and in 1945 she started training as a pediatrics nurse in the South Methodist Hospital of Los Angeles, Calif. She was a nurse many years.

August 3, 1950 she was united in marriage to Lloyd E. Duncan of Los Angeles.

Others, who with her husband, cherish her memory are sisters, Loraine Orme, Laguna Hills, Calif., (Beatrice) Mrs. Halbert Hensley, Bedford; a brother, Alfred J. [ames] Orme and wife, Lois, Hopkins; four nieces; one nephew and many relatives and friends who loved her dearly.

PEARL EDITH GARRETT

Funeral services for Pearl Edith Garrett were held Monday, Jan. 10, 1994 at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Dena Woldruff officiating. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Pearl Edith [Robey] Garrett passed away January 5, 1994 at the age of 89 years, six months and 23 days.

She was born near Bedford, Iowa June 12, 1904. She was the youngest of five children; her twin died at birth.

Pearl married Charley Garrett on January 30, 1923. Two sons were born to this union, Carl J. [acob] of Yuba City, Calif and Carol W. [illiam] of Plattsmouth, Neb. She also leaves four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charley who died in March 1960. She and Charley were farmers for many years in Taylor County.

Other relatives in this area include a half sister, Estelle Newberry of Hopkins, Mo. and a niece, Wilma Valentine of Bedford.

Emma Graham, 93 Rites Held Oct. 6

Funeral services for Mrs. James McDonald (Emma Jane) [Knighton] Graham of New Market were held October 6 at Shum-Novinger in Bedford conducted by Rev. Ollie Odle. Mrs. Graham died October 4, 1973 in St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo. Interment was at Hopkins (Mo.) Cemetery.

Her survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Roy, of Basehor, Kansas.

ALFRED NORTHOVER

Alfred [Dorman] Northover, a resident at Bedford Manor, passed away January 6, 1994 at Bedford Manor at age 89.

Alfred was born in Hopkins, Mo. July 16, 1904 to Edward [Alfred] and Mamie [May] Esme [Esmay] Northover. He was one of four sons and two daughters.

He attended public schools in Hopkins and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

In the early 1930s, he was united in marriage to Frances [Marion] Lemon Dragoo in Maryville, Mo. and they lived in Bedford, Iowa until she died in 1969. They raised two daughters, Mrs. Phyliss Blend and Mrs. Marilyn Crawford.

In 1971 he married Alma [Beatrice Lee] McMillen who survives him at the family home in Bedford.

Alfred, who was known as a work oriented man, had farmed, had been a self-employed handyman, and worked at Prugh Hardware Store. In the late years, Alfred and Alma raised a very large garden at their Bedford residence.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, three brothers, Woodrow, Edward and Harry, and two sisters, Mrs. Merle Smith and Mrs. Esther Moore.

He leaves to mourn, his wife Alma; two daughters, Mrs. Richard Crawford and Mrs. Phyliss Blend; three grandchildren; seven stepchildren; 23 step grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Northover.

Funeral services for Rebecca [Kay] Ogle, 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ogle of Bedford, were held Wednesday, February 10, at the Blockton Methodist Church. Rebecca died Sunday evening at ChildrenŐs Hospital in Omaha. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Funeral services for Rebecca Ogle, 6, were held February 10,at the Blockton Christian Church with Gerald Sappington and Rev. Clarence Landis officiating. Following a brief illness, Rebecca died February 7, at ChildrenŐs Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Nebr. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Rebecca Kay Ogle, daughter and fourth child of John and Mary Miller Ogle, was born December 24, 1958.

As a child of Christian parents, Becky had received Christian Baptism and was enrolled as a Preparatory Member of the Methodist Church.  She attended regularly and greatly enjoyed Sunday school at the Wray Memorial Methodist Church in Hopkins, Mo. She was also a member of the kindergarten class of the Bedford Community School.

Everyone who knew Becky loved her. Her sunny disposition and pleasant smile endeared her to all. She will be missed, not only by her family, but by all her friends, her fellow classmates in kindergarten, and her teachers.

In addition to her parents, Becky is survived by two brothers, William Earl and John Robert; three sisters, Elizabeth Ann, Deborah Sue, and Sandra Lee; her paternal grandfather, Guy Ogle; and great uncle, Earl Ogle, of Blockton; and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Last Rites Held Sept. 27 for Alfred Orme, 64

Funeral services for Alfred James Orme, 64, of Hopkins, Mo., held September 27, 1975 at Wray Memorial United Methodist Church in Hopkins, were conducted by Rev. John Shipley.

Mr. Orme died, following a long illness, September 25, 1975 at his home two miles east of Hopkins. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Alfred James Orme was the son of the late Elmer [Ernest] and Arria [Evelyn] Bordner Orme, born December 5, 1910 near Bedford, Iowa.

On May 9, 1931, he was married at Sidney, Iowa to Lois Woldruff.

He was a graduate of the Bedford High School, and had been a resident of the Hopkins Community for 33 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gerald McKee (Shirley), Pickering, Missouri and Mrs. Cecil Richardson (Barbara), Huntsville, Alabama; two sisters, Mrs. Halbert Hensley (Beatrice) of Bedford and Miss Loraine Orme of Laguna Hills, California.

He was the proud grandfather of four grandchildren, Randy McKee of Galveston, Texas, Mrs. Mike Carter (Vicky), Maryville and Dala Richardson of Huntsville, Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Mrs. Geretta Duncan.

He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Mrs. E. [lmer] E. [rnest] Orme of Bedford died at St. Francis hospital, Maryville, Wednesday morning.

Funeral services will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday, December 31.

Mrs. Orme suffered a stroke Christmas Day and was taken by ambulance to the hospital that evening.

Obituary – Mrs. E. E. Orme

Arria Evelyn Bordner was born In Fulton County, Ill., July 19, 1871, and died at St. Francis hospital, Maryville, Dec. 29, 1954 at the age of 83 years, five months, ten days.

She was the third of a family of ten children born to Alfred Bordner and Harriet Scrivner Bordner. She came with her parents to Taylor county, Iowa, when just a small child, and grew to womanhood in the Valley community, southwest of Bedford.

She was married to Elmer E. [rnest] Orme January 31, 1904. To them were born four children: Loraine Orme of Oak Park, Illinois; Mrs. Lloyd Duncan (Geretta), Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Halbert Hensley (Beatrice) and Alfred [James] Orme, both of Hopkins. She spent most of her married life on a farm in Taylor County.

She is survived by her husband, four children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren.  Also by one brother, John Bordner of Hopkins; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Merchant of North Hollywood, California.

In early youth she confessed Christ as her Savior and united with the Methodist church at Siam.  Since coming to Bedford, she and her husband transferred to the Methodist church.

She lived to enjoy her Golden Wedding Anniversary with her husband in January of 1954.

While in falling health for five years, she had not been confined to her bed until she was stricken on Christmas Day.

Funeral services were conducted from the Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford, Dec. 31 by Rev. Robt. M. Peters, minister of the Methodist church. Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Funeral services for Elmer [Ernest] Orme, long-time Taylor County resident, will be held today (Thurs.) at 2:00 at 708 State Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Milton J. Kinney officiating. Mr. Orme died Tuesday at St. Francis hospital in Maryville. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery.

Two daughters Lorraine Orme of Oak Park, Ill., and Mrs Lloyd (Geretta) Duncan of Los Angeles were called to Bedford last week by Mr. Orme's serious illness.

Last Rites Are Held For Elmer Orme

Funeral services for Elmer Ernest Orme, held May 7 at Shum - Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. J. Milton Kinney. Mr. Orme died at St. Francis hospital in Maryville May 5, 1964 at the age of 84 years, six months.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Elmer Ernest Orme, the only child of James [E.] and Adeline [Matilda Burch] Orme, was born near Clearmont, Mo., Nov. 5, 1879.

He attended school in Maryville, Mo., and was graduated from the Maryville Seminary in 1901. He was an Iowa rural schoolteacher and engaged in farming most of his life. For fourteen years he was caretaker of the Fairview cemetery in Bedford.

On January 3, 1904 he was united in marriage to Arria Evelyn Bordner.

To them were born four children: Loraine Orme of Oak Park, Ill.; Mrs. Lloyd Duncan (Geretta), Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Halbert Hensley, (Beatrice) and Alfred [James] Orme, both of Hopkins, Mo.

His wife passed away December 29, 1954, the year that they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

He is survived by the four children, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

As a young man he united with the Methodist Church in Maryville, Mo. Since moving to Bedford he transferred his membership to the Bedford Methodist church.

WILLIS WATSON DIES

Follows Sister In Death By Only A Few Days

Willis C. [oleman] Watson, 64, died Friday evening, Sept. 9, at his country home south of Sheridan. He suffered a stroke on Tuesday, the same day his sister, Mrs. Lantie Crull died.

He leaves his wife, one son Orla Watson of St. Joseph and one daughter Mrs. Glee Bainum of Sheridan.

He was a member of the Sheridan Christian church for forty-five years.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. L. B. Day of Pickering. Burial was in the Sheridan cemetery.

The funeral of Mrs. William A. [dams] Webb [Martha Ann Goodwin] occurred yesterday at 2 p. m. at the Christian church, conducted by Elder William Cobb. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in Taylor County. Every one who knew her was her friend, and they turned out in large numbers to pay to her the last token of respect.

Interment was made at Bedford cemetery.

Leafa Williams, 82

Mrs. Leafa Williams, 82, formerly of Taylor County, daughter of Parker Raynor and Eva Stafford Raynor, was born in Taylor Co., Iowa on June 18, 1890 and died in the Methodist Hospital at Des Moines on May 22, 1973. Funeral services were held in Ellston, Iowa with interment in Cedar Rapids.

Mrs. Williams lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for many years but after the death of her husband, moved to Phoenix, Ariz. In Feb. 1972, she came to make her home with her niece and family, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Dukes of Ellston, Iowa.

She is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Fern Joslyn of Chico, Calif, and Mrs. Effa Cunning of Bedford; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Parker   Raynor   of St. Joe, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, on April 11, 1948; her parents and four sisters, Mrs. Ida Weingarth, Mrs. Etta Cunningham, Mrs. Neva White, Mrs. Audrey Pershin and one brother, Forest Parker Raynor.

She was a member of the Central Christian Church of Phoenix, Ariz., the Ladies Auxiliary of the Railroad Trainmen and thel Rebekah Lodge of Phoenix, Ariz.

Jesse Younkin Rites Dec. 17

Funeral services for Jesse Lee Younkin, 84, lifetime Taylor County resident, held December 17 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr Younkin died December 14, 1970 at Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr following a short illness. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery, east of Bedford.

Jesse Lee Younkin, son of William and Mary Quimby Younkin, was born November 10, 1886, in Platteville, Taylor County, Iowa.

He lived his entire lifetime in Taylor County Iowa where he was engaged in farming until his retirement.

On March 20, 1910, he was united in marriage to Pearl [Fay] Higgins and to them were born four children, two sons and two daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Lewis and Marion, and two sisters, Maude and Matt.

Left to cherish memories are his sons, Dale Younkin of Blockton and John Younkin of Sheridan; two daughters, Mrs. Ray Stein of Blockton and Mrs. Ivan Cunning of Saint Joseph, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; five nieces; four nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
