Death Visits in Two Homes
Moneyhan and W. S. Hardenbrook Dead
Former Was Pioneer Settler of Gravity—Latter Had Traveled Extensively Over United States
James Moneyhan, a well known and pioneer resident of Gravity vicinity, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. S. Menoher of Villisca, Iowa, yesterday morning about 9 o'clock, following an illness of several years, his ailment being due to the infirmities of old age. The death of the deceased was hastened by an accident which occurred a year ago at which time he suffered a fractured hip which had never thoroughly healed because of his advanced years. The deceased was 86 years old on the 7th day of July and his residence in Taylor county was close on the half century mark. During the last term of years which he had spent in the community he made many friends, being a man of upright character and generous disposition, and his demise will be greatly regretted by a wide acquaintanceship. In addition to being a pioneer of Taylor county, he was also an old soldier, having fought through the four long years of rebellion in the interests of his country.
The deceased leaves a large family of children to mourn his death, his wife having preceded him to the land beyond and they are: Mrs. R. B. West of Holt township; Turns Moneyhan of Idaho; Mrs. E. S. Menoher of Villisca; John Moneyhan of Creston; Mrs. Minnie Whitwell of Gravity; James Moneyhan of Gravity; Mrs. Charles Menoher of Nodaway; R. B. Moneyhan and Mrs. W. J. Nevius of Bedford.
The remains were taken to Gravity and the funeral will be held tomorrow, interment being made in the Gravity cemetery beside those of his wife.
The bereaved children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

Wilson Shannon Hardenbrook died very suddenly at his home in Bedford Saturday, death being due to a hemorrhage. The deceased had been in poor health for three years and during the last two months his illness became acute but the final cause of his demise was very unexpected.
The deceased was a well known resident of Bedford and during his life had been a consistent traveler, having visited at practically every point of interest in the United States. While on his many travels he became acquainted with a large number of our country's famous men and women of the present century.
He was born at Mont [Mount] Gilead, Ohio, September 26, 1845, and early in childhood moved to Monmouth, Ill., where he resided until young manhood had been reached when he started the first of his series of travels, going westward to Montana and other points in general.
Early in life he accepted the faith and became a member of the Presbyterian church. He was a man of serene and noble character and enjoyed talking over his travels and experiences with anyone who appeared interested.
The deceased is survived by three brothers, who are Dr. Allan Hardenbrook, of Missoula, Mont.; C. [harles] K. [elly] Hardenbrook of Lompoc, Cal. and L. [ewis] D.[uff] Hardenbrook of Wakefield, Kan. He was a brother of the late R. [ichard] L.[ockwood] Hardenbrook and is an uncle of the Misses Jessie, Helen, Inez and Persis Hardenbrook in northeast Bedford.
Funeral arrangements have been made for Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the house, the services to be conducted by Rev. Hatcher of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. Currie of the Presbyterian church. Interment will be made in the Bedford cemetery.

Villisca Review (Villisca, Iowa), Saturday, October 7, 1916
James Moneyhan Dies Wednesday
His wide circle of friends in Taylor, Adams, Page and Montgomery counties will regret to learn of the death of James Moneyhan, who died Wednesday morning of this week at about nine o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. S. Menoher. Old age complications are given as the direct cause of his death. For many months Mr. Moneyhan had been an invalid, having fallen while at the home of his daughter in Gravity more than a year ago and from that fall sustained injuries that made the last months of his life ones of suffering.
Short funeral services were held Thursday at 12:30 at the Methodist parsonage in this city. Rev. E. B. Pratt had charge. Mr. and Mrs. Moody sang. The remains were then taken to Gravity. Members of the local G. A. R. also assisted as pallbearers. The services at Gravity were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. Mueller and at the First Christian church in that city. Interment was made in the Gravity cemetery.
James Moneyhan was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, on July 7, 1830, and when eighteen months of age moved with his parents to Louisville, Kentucky, where the family made their home for a time. He then went to Washington county, Indiana. While a resident of that county he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Walker on February 12, 1851. Ten years later Mr. and Mrs. Moneyhan came to Iowa, residing first in Monroe County, near Albia. In 1870 they moved still further west and took up their residence near Gravity, where he remained most of the time during the remainder of his life. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Moneyhan. Nine Survive. Three daughters, Mrs. Menoher of this city, Mrs. R. B. West of Brooks and Mrs. Chas. Whitwell of Gravity were the only children at the bedside of the father at the time of death.
By faith the deceased was a member of the Christian church, having united in an early day at Carter's Creek, Indiana. At the time of death he was a member of the Gravity Christian church.
Mr. Moneyhan was also a veteran of the Civil War. He was a member of Company K, thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry and served his country for two years and ten months. Ten months of that time were spent in the Tyler (Texas) prison.

DIED

Elizabeth Blakely, daughter of Charles and Lucetta [Lemmons] Blakely, was born October 6, 1831, in Morgan County, Illinois.  When she was but a child she came to Jefferson County, Iowa, with her parents, where she lived until she was married to [James] Gordon Menoher, in June 1856.  To this union were born six children all of whom grew to manhood.   Two preceded her in death, John H.[arvey], of Salina, Kansas, and Dr. J. [ames] A. [lexander] Menoher, of Manhattan, Kans.  The four living sons are C. [harles] B. [lakely] Menoher, Lenox, Iowa; B. [enjamin] F.[ranklin] Menoher, Clarinda, Iowa; W. [illiam] E.[dgar] Menoher, Lake Worth, Florida, and Rev. E. [dwin] S. [mith] Menoher, Corning, Iowa.  The husband and father died when the children were small, leaving the mother the responsibility of training them.  She with her family went to the home of her parents, near Fairfield, Iowa, and remained for a few years.  In 1874 they moved to Taylor County and settled on a farm near where Gravity is now located.  Here they lived until the boys were all grown.  She with her family then moved to Gravity where she lived until five years ago when because of poor health and declining years she went to live with her children.   For the past three years she had lived at Villisca with E.[dwin] S. [mith] Menoher and family, but just before their removal to Corning, she was taken to the home of her son, C.[harles] B. [lakely] in Lenox, at whose home Friday, October 14, at 1:30 p. m., she quietly fell asleep in Jesus after a short illness.

On October 6th she celebrated her ninetieth birthday.  Three sons, two daughters-in-law and one sister beside other friends were present and she enjoyed the day very much.  She had two sisters living, Mrs. Kate Adams, of Gravity and Mrs. Maggie Dickerson, of Inavale, Nebr.; and one brother, Rev. John Blakely, at Springview, Nebr.  She has 13 grandchildren living and 6 great grandchildren.  She united with the M. E. church when young and has been a devoted Christian for more than 70 years.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Gravity, Sunday at 3 oÕclock, conducted by Rev. E. A. Moore, Supt. of the Creston district, assisted by Rev. Fellows, pastor of the M. E. church at Gravity; Rev. Nayle, pastor of the M. E. church at Lenox, and Rev. J. L. Boyd, pastor of the M. E. church at Villisca.

Then for a number of years he was a county road maintenance employee where he worked horses and loved to work them on road equipment. His last active occupation was for Mental Health at Clarinda, retiring from this work when 83 years of age.
