Obituary

Nica Malinda Cordell was born in Cedar County, Missouri, Feb. 13, 1844, and departed this life at the home of her granddaughter [Hettie Jane Rusco Kemery] at Kellerton, Iowa, Aug. 6, 1919, aged 75 years, 5 months and 23 days.

She was united in marriage to Irvin Cordell in 1860.   To this union [six children were born, all of whom preceded her in death] except John of Maloy, and Jerry, of Athelstan. Besides her two sons, she leaves to mourn their loss, two sisters, Mrs. Ferbia Hindman, of Spokane, Washington, and Mahala James, of Parnell, Mo.; also 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandson, besides nieces, nephews and cousins. Her companion preceded her to the better land seven years ago.

Early in life she united with the Baptist church, and remained a faithful follower of her Master till the end.

She had been a resident of this community for about 60 years.

The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church at Athelstan August 7, by Challie E. Graham, pastor of the Isadora Church of Christ, and the remains laid to rest in Athelstan cemetery.

These faithful Christian mothers are one of the greatest assets of any community. God's greatest gift to any boy or girl aside from Jesus Christ and His gospel is a good Christian mother. We cannot value them too highly or be too grateful to them and their blessed memory.

The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends. May they not sorrow as those who have no hope, but trust in Jesus who is the Way to the Father's house, where all tears shall be wiped away, where Christian fellowships shall be reunited, and joy gladden our hearts forever.

Obituary

Lucinda Garnes [Garren] was born July 6, 1835, and died at her home in Athelstan August 30, 1930, at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 24 days.

She was united in marriage to Frank Parker in 1854. He died in the army in 1862, leaving four little fatherless children for Mrs. Parker to raise alone, thus she was made to know the hardships of the early days.  One son, George, died in 1892, at the age of 32.  The other three children survive her.  They are S. [tephen] M.[arion] and Noah Parker, of Athelstan, and Mrs. Sarah Bownes, of East Hampton, Connecticut.

She was again united in marriage to Ellis Cordell in 1871. To this union was born eight children. Mr. Cordell died in 1893, and again she was left alone to raise her family.  Only three children to this union remain to mourn the passing of their mother.  They are Ike Cordell, of Bedford; John Cordell, of Nebraska City, Neb., and Mrs. Harve Carter, of Clinton, Mo.  Those preceding her in death were Mrs. Mollie Green, Mrs. Minnie Rusco, Charlie who died in infancy, Frank [A] Lonzo, Mrs. Malinda Rusco.   She leaves to mourn her going six children; 44 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives and friends.  She was the last of a family of three sisters and four brothers.

The deceased was a member of the Baptist church and a highly respected friend and neighbor.  Her children were very kind and attentive to her needs in her declining years and ought to be a much needed example to many of the youth of today.  The bereaved ones have the heartfelt sympathy of the many friends she has made during her long life.

A large host of friends and neighbors gathered in the Baptist church, Athelstan, Monday, Sept. 1, to pay their last tribute of respect.  The services were conducted by Challie E. Graham, and the remains laid to rest in the Athelstan cemetery.   The music was furnished by Miss Jean Freeland, Mrs. Glenn Stroburg, Marion and Calvin Jenkins, with Mrs. F. A. Freeland at the piano.  They sang "Asleep in Jesus," and "We are Going Down the Valley."  A specially requested song, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," was sung by two of her grandchildren, Miss Mildred Carter and Miss Myrtle L. Darnell.  The pallbearers were Joe Parker, Ed Parker, Raymond Treece, Johnnie Cordell, Harley Sleep and Jimmy Ferrell.
