Chas. Sherbeck Rites June 20

Funeral services for Charles A. Sherbeck, 92, lifetime Taylor County resident, held June 20 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford were conducted by Mr. Carl Cummings.  Mr. Sherbeck died June 17, 1970 in a hospital at Wahoo, Nebr.  Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, Bedford.

Charles Alfred Sherbeck, son of Sven and [Matilda] Tilda [Matilda Maria Johnson] Sherbeck, was born April 4, 1878, near Bedford.

He lived his entire life on the farm west of Bedford where he was engaged in farming, as long as health permitted, and this past year he had spent at the home of his nephew, Paul Leighton, at Wahoo, Nebraska.

He was the fifth of 12 children, seven sisters and four brothers, all of whom are deceased but one sister, Mrs. Edith Douglass of Fort Morgan, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Sarah Dresher, Mary Bristow, Carrie Sherbeck, Mertha [Myrtle] Patton, Clara Bowers, Grace Leighton and brothers, James [Arthur], Enoch [Albert], Victor [Garfield] and Frank [Archibald].

Besides his surviving sister, Edith, he is survived by 20 nieces and nephews and several cousins.

Charles was a good friend and neighbor and will be missed by his loved ones and friends.

Swan Sherbeck

Swan [Sven] Sherbeck was born in Sweden, Jan. 6, 1849, and departed this life August 25, 1930.  He was married to Tilda [Matilda] Maria Johnson, Dec. 3, 1871.  To this union were born twelve children, two dying in infancy, and Mrs. Sarah [Matilda] Dresher, a daughter, May 10, 1925.  He is survived by nine children, six daughters and three sons: Carrie S. [ophia] Sherbeck of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Frank A. [rchibald], of Washington, Ia.; Mary L. [ovesa] Bristow of Southey, Sask., Canada; Charles A. [lfred], of Bedford, Ia.; Myrtle I. Patton of Guilford, Mo.; Edith L. [orene] Douglass of Fort Morgan, Colo.; James A.[rthur], Clara C. [harlotte] Bowers and Grace E.[vangeline] Leighton of Bedford.  Mrs. Sherbeck passed to her reward about twenty years ago.  Mr. Sherbeck with his family was a member of the Morning Star Presbyterian Church and has remained strong in the faith.  In addition to the children and near relatives, Mr. Sherbeck leaves a host of friends and neighbors who will not soon forget his wholesome fellowship and influence in this community.

The funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 oÕclock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. F. McMican.  Interment was made in the Graceland cemetery.

James Sherbeck Dies In Clarinda Hospital

James Sherbeck of northwest of Bedford died Tuesday, January 13.  Graveside services will be held at the Graceland cemetery, at 11 oÕclock Friday morning, January 16, conducted by Rev. Gordon F. MacLean.

James A. [rthur] Sherbeck was the son of Sven and Tilda [Matilda Maria Johnson] Sherbeck and was aged 63 years, 6 months and 11 days at the time of his death.  He had been ill for several years.

He is survived by one brother, Charles Sherbeck of Bedford; four sisters, Carrie Sherbeck of Bedford, Mertha Patton of Glen Mills, Penn., Edith Douglass of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Grace Leighton of Bedford.

Frank Sherbeck Dies; A Former Resident

Frank A. [rchibald] Sherbeck, a former resident of Bedford, died at his home in Washington, Iowa, Saturday, January 10.  He had been ill with a heart ailment for more than four years but his death came unexpectedly just after he had eaten his breakfast.  Burial was at Washington.

He was born at the Sherbeck farm home west of Bedford, on August 5, 1875.  He was a barber by trade, having been in business in Bedford for a number of years, and moving to Washington about forty years ago.

He is survived by two daughters:  Mrs. Elizabeth Wright of Keota, Iowa, and Mrs. Ruth Stout of Iowa City, and by eight grandchildren.  Also by five sisters and two brothers.  They are Miss Carrie Sherbeck, Mrs. Grace E. [vangeline] Leighton, Charles Sherbeck and James Sherbeck of Bedford; Mrs. Myrtle Patton of Glen Mills, Penn., Mrs. Edith Douglass of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Mrs. Mary L. [ovesa] Bristow of Southey, Sask., Canada.

Carrie S. Sherbeck

Carrie [Carolina] S. [ophia] Sherbeck, daughter of Sven and Tilda [Matilda Maria Johnson] Sherbeck, was born in Illinois Jan. 6, 1874, and passed away April 3, 1951, at the family home five miles west of Bedford, at the age of 77 years, two months and 27 days.

She was the second daughter of a family of 12 children.  Her parents, four brothers and three sisters have preceded her in death.  Survivors are a brother, Charles Sherbeck, of the home west of Bedford, and three sisters, Mrs. Mertha [Myrtle] Patton of Glenn Mills, Penn., Mrs. Edith Douglass of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Mrs. Grace Leighton of Bedford.

Much of her life was spent in Colorado Springs, where she was employed as a seamstress.

She was a member of the Morning Star Presbyterian Church, which formerly served the community about six miles west of Bedford.

Funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2 p. m., Friday, April 6, conducted by Rev. Robt. M. Peters.  Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

Mrs. Claude Bowers Dies In Maryville

Mrs. Claude Bowers, 49, died at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville Friday, March 20, following an illness of several weeks.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert Boshen.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Clara Charlotte Sherbeck, daughter of Swan [Sven] and Tilda [Matilda Maria Johnson] Sherbeck, was born at Bedford, Iowa, Oct. 20, 1886.

She was married to Claude [Lewis] Bowers Dec. 24, 1914 and they had resided on a farm west of Bedford all during their married life.

Surviving with the husband are eight brothers and sisters.  They are Miss Carrie Sherbeck, Charles Sherbeck, and Mrs. Grace Leighton of Bedford; Mrs. R.[obert] L. Patton [Myrtle] of Guilford, Mo., Mrs. C. A. Douglass [Edith] of Fort Morgan, Colo., Frank Sherbeck of Washington, Iowa, James Sherbeck of Clarinda, and Mrs. Mary L. [ovesa] Bristow of Southey, Sask., Canada.  Her parents, two brothers, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Dresher, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bowers united with the Morning Star church west of Bedford, in youth.

Funeral Today For Grant Hindman

Grant Hindman, 68, a resident of the Bedford community for many years, died Tuesday, March 24, after having been in ill health for several months.

The funeral services were held at the Walker and Shum Funeral Home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Stanley Decker.  Burial was in the Forest Grove cemetery.

Hindman Funeral Held Last Thursday

Funeral services for Grant Hindman, 67, who died Tuesday, March 24, were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, March 26, conducted by Rev. J. Stanley Decker.  Burial was in the Forest Grove cemetery.

Grant Hindman, son of William and Lomira Thompson Hindman, was born on a farm southeast of Bedford, Aug. 8, 1866.  When a few months old he had a severe sick spell, which affected his eyes and which caused him to be a semi-invalid all of his life.  He was a resident of Bedford and community his entire life, with the exception of a few years when the family resided in Fremont County and a short time spent at Hopkins.

He is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Retta Dallison of Bedford, Mrs. Mary Murray of Clarinda, and Clint Hindman of Bedford.  There are also two nieces and two nephews.

Arthur Heuer, 71, Rites June 20

Funeral services for Arthur [Peter] Heuer, 71, of Clarinda, former resident of Taylor County near Guss, were held at the Lavelle Funeral Home in Clarinda, June 20.  Mr. Heuer died June 16 in Clarinda.  Interment was at the Clarinda Cemetery.

Heuer had farmed in the Braddyville and Clarinda areas and the past several years had been custodian of the Nodaway Valley Park.

Mr. Heuer was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Glen Mick of Bedford.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarinda.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Veva [Stowell], two sons, Francis of Ashland, Oregon and Fred of Red Oak; two grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Dave (Lucille) Briggs of New Market.

Glade Shearer

Elmer Glade Shearer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. [ohn] S. Shearer [Elizabeth Eaton], was born October 4, 1893 near Conway and died at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines January 1, 1946, at the age of 52 years, 3 months and 27 days.

He enlisted in the army of World War I in April 1917 and served two years, most of which was spent in the Hawaiian Islands.

He was married to Miss Rose Cannon June 5, 1919.  To them four children were born:  Alene Kangas of Iron Mountain, Mich.; Paul, Pauline and Donald, all at home.

In March 1910 he united with the Christian church at Blockton, and was an active member until his death.

He was preceded in death by his father, his brother Harry and his mother.  Glade was loved and respected by his neighbors and all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, four children, one grandson, a sister, Fern Reid of Boise, Idaho, and a brother, Merton Shearer of Chattanooga, Tenn.

He was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Shearer was an active Elder in the church at Blockton, having presided at the LordÕs Table just a short time prior to his death.

Funeral services were held at the church Friday, conducted by Rev. W. A. Purdy, pastor of the Bedford Christian church.  Burial was in the Blockton cemetery.

Mrs. Jere Hough, 89, Dies In Washington

Mrs. Jere Hough, 89, a resident of Bedford and community for many years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. [rederick] L. Pitman, in Grandview, Wash., Thursday, June 13.  The body was brought to Bedford and the funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. H. Currie of Tarkio, Mo.  Burial was in the Lexington cemetery. Susanna [Cooper] Hough was born May 11, 1846, near Springfield, Ill.  In 1866 she was married to Jeremiah Hough.  To them were born three children, Mary E. [lizabeth], Thomas E., and Warren J [eremiah].  The two latter preceded their mother in death.

Surviving relatives are the daughter, Mary E. [lizabeth] Pitman of Grandview, Wash., two stepsons, John W. Hough of Winfield, Iowa, and George W. Hough of Conway.  Also several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The past fifteen years of her life, Mrs. Hough spent with her daughter in the west.

Obituary - F. A. Freeland

Francis Asbury Freeland was born in Peoria, Wayne County, Iowa, April 9, 1867, the youngest child of Francis Asbury and Eloisa [Caroline] Kirby Freeland, and died Jan. 7, 1941.

He grew to manhood in Wayne County and graduated from the high school at Corydon, Iowa.  Later, he attended the Western Normal College at Shenandoah.

In 1890 he was married to Lillie Nelson at Corydon, Iowa.  Shortly after their marriage they went to Colorado to live near Sedalia.

Later, they came to Champion, Nebr., and it was here that the first child, Edna, was born.  Two more children, a daughter who died in infancy, and a son, Montgomery Edward, were born.  It was during this time that Mr. Freeland was employed as a teacher and as county surveyor.  In connection with his interest in surveying he was instrumental in promoting a pioneer project in irrigation in Chase County, Nebr.

In 1897 Mrs. Freeland died and for the next few years Mr. Freeland continued to live in Nebraska, devoting much of his time to cattle raising.

In 1905 he and Sarah [Marston] White of Holyoke, Colo., were married.  Immediately after the ceremony the couple came to the farm in Worth County, Mo., where they had since resided.  Two children, Jean Walker and Arrie Anna, were born to them.

Early in life Mr. Freeland identified himself with the church and throughout his life he was always faithful in his support of all religious activities.  After coming to Missouri to live he worked in the Methodist church at Isadora and served as superintendent of the Sunday school for several years.

Those who survive the deceased are:  his wife, four children, Mrs. D. Robert of Champion, Nebr., M. [ontgomery] E. [dward] Freeland of Napa, Calif., Mrs. Edwin [Jamison] Crane [Jean] and Arrie Anna Freeland of Dawson, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Elson and Edwin Freeland; two sisters, Mrs. Bell Fletcher and Mrs. K. S. Douglass.

The funeral services were held in the Athelstan Community church Jan. 10, 1941, conducted by Challie E. Graham.  Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Obituary - Jonathan Vanskyock

Jonathan Vanskyock, son of Washington and Susan [White Lantz] Vanskyock, was born in Worth County, Mo., Sept. 5, 1884, and died at his home near Isadora, Mo., April 6, 1952, aged 67 years, seven months, one day.

He was married to Georgianna Freemyer Jan. 7, 1903.  To them six children were born:  Mrs. Beatrice Adams, Las Vegas, Nevada; Leslie W. of Sheridan; Wesley R. [ussell] of Ravenwood, Mo.; Doyle V. [ictor], deceased; Mrs. Audrey [Vivian] Schneider, Blockton; Mrs. Edna [Eileen] Hartley, Mason City, Iowa.  He also leaves six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lodenna [Lodema] Ostrander, Hastings, Iowa; Mrs. Lucy Cordell [Caudell], Maryville; Mrs. China [Fenwick] Scott, Athelstan; and one brother, Walter Lantz, St. Joseph, Mo.

His entire life was spent in the community in which he was born.

Funeral services were held at Community church in Athelstan April 9, conducted by Rev. L. B. Day of Maryville.  Burial in Athelstan cemetery.

Vanskyock Dies

Jonathan Vanskyock, who lived west of Isadora, passed away April 6 at the age of 67.  Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Athelstan community church, conducted by Rev. L. B. Day.  Interment was in Athelstan cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Georgianna, daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Adams of Las Vegas, Nev., twin sons, Leslie of Sheridan, Wesley of Ravenwood; a half brother, Walter Lantz of St. Joseph; sisters, Mrs. China [Fenwick] Scott, Athelstan, Mrs. Lucy Cordell [Caudell], Maryville, Mrs. Lodema Ostrander, Hastings, Iowa.

Walter Lantz Rites June 11

Funeral services for Walter Lantz, held June 11 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Walter Ortmann.  Mr. Lantz died at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and five days.  Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

The following obituary was included in the services.

Walter H. [ull] Lantz, son of John and Susan White Lantz was born in Worth County, Missouri, Aug. 4, 1874.  He lived his entire life, with the exception of a few years, in Taylor County.

In 1903 he was united in marriage to Mae Etta Swett.  To this union six children were born, one daughter dying in infancy.

He worked until his retirement as a bridge carpenter for the Chicago Great Western railroad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 1934, one granddaughter, Norma Hipsley in 1962, seven brothers and sisters, and one half-brother, Jonathan Vanskyock.

His children who survive are Mrs. Elsie Matheny, Blockton, Mrs. Stella Ewart, Lenox, Raymond [Joseph] of Piedmont, So. Dak., Vernon of Redding, Gaylord of San Mateo, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. China [Fenwick] Scott, of Athelstan; 17 grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

He joined Church of God in St. Joseph, Mo., several years ago.  He had strong determination to keep going and doing for himself in his failing health and declining years.

Final Rites Held In Bedford For Oakley Schneider

Funeral services for Oakley William Anthony Schneider, 68, of Blockton, held June 4 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Pastor Leonard Kitson and Pastor Peter Dible.  Mr. Schneider died at his home May 31, 1980.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Ia.

Oakley William Anthony Schneider, son of Edward M. [organ] and Mattie Pearl [Wildman] Schneider, was born in Jackson Township, Taylor County, January 18, 1912.  He attended rural elementary school and Blockton High School.

On July 6, 1932, he was married to Audrey Vivian Vanskyock and they have spent their entire married life farming in Taylor County.

He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond, and wife, Maxine.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; and one sister, Mrs. Robert Terbell [Myrtle Irene]; a number of nieces and nephews; many relatives and friends.

He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Final Rites For Mrs. Schneider

Funeral services for Mattie Pearl Schneider were held Aug. 31 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Colvin Caughey officiating.  Burial was in Platteville cemetery.  Included in the service was the following obituary.

Mattie Pearl Schneider, daughter of William and Irene [Cowell] Wildman, was born April 3, 1884 in Gay Township and passed away August 28, 1962 at Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, Iowa, after a short illness, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 26 days.

She grew to womanhood near Platteville and was married to Edward Morgan Schneider May 7, 1911.  To this union, three children were born:  two sons, Oakley and Raymond, and one daughter, Myrtle Irene Terbell.

She joined the Methodist Church at Gay Center, later transferring her membership to Blockton.

She was the last survivor of a family of ten children; her husband preceded her in death in 1944.

She is survived by her three children, three granddaughters, two grandsons, two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law.

Raymond Schneider Final Rites Held Here April 17

Funeral services for Raymond Schneider, 62, of Blockton, were held April 17 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Rev. Ollie Odle.  Mr. Schneider died in his daughterÕs home in Lenox, Ia., April 14, 1976.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Raymond Wildman Schneider, son of Edward Morgan and Mattie Pearl Wildman Schneider, was born in Jackson Township on the family farm, near Blockton, Iowa on September 12, 1913.

Raymond lived his entire life on the home place.  He attended the public school and Baptist Church in Bedford.

On January 1, 1944 he was united in marriage to Maxine Dunbar at Maryville, Missouri and to this union two daughters were born.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Raymond and his wife, Maxine, lived their complete married life on the family farm.  He was a good and loving husband and father.  He was blessed with four grandchildren, who in his later years were his greatest pride and joy.  His memory will live with those who love him and he will be remembered for the many good things he stood for.  Raymond loved the land and he was happy working year after year on the soil he was born on.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Maxine of the home; two daughters, Phyllis Marvelli and her husband, Melvin, of Carlisle, Ia., Christene Long and her husband, Richard of Lenox, Ia.; one brother, Oakley Schneider, of Blockton, Ia.; one sister, Myrtle [Irene] Terbell, Bedford; four grandchildren, Kimberly and Daren Long, Brandon and Bambi Marvelli; other relatives and a host of friends.

Raymond was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge of Bedford.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew and loved him.

Harley Scott

James Harley Scott, son of James and Jane Scott, was born at Stockton, Kansas, October 14, 1880 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Berniece Waugh of Quitman, Mo., Dec. 24 at the age of 65 years, 2 months and 10 days.

He was married to China Fenwick of Athelstan Feb. 13, 1912.  To them were born seven children:  Howard Scott of Athelstan, Genese Benson of Maryville, Herschel Scott of Bedford, Joyce Weaver of Blockton, Berniece Waugh of Quitman.  There is also one step-son, Joe Fenwick of Los Angeles.  Darrell and Hazel died in infancy.

He also leaves nine grandchildren, four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Lillie Shaw of Kansas, Ed Scott of Sheridan, Winnie Scott of St. Joseph, Rosa Scott of Grant City, Ada Wirthal of Lincoln, Nebr., Fred Scott of Cherokee, June McDonald of Iowa.  One sister, Mrs. Nettie Nye, preceded him in death.

He united with the Baptist church at Athelstan when a young man.

The funeral services were held at the Holiness church in Athelstan Thursday afternoon, conducted by Ward Campbell of Corning.  Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

J. S. Wildman of Blockton died at the home of his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. J.[ames] E. Wildman in Bedford, early Saturday morning, July 31, after an illness of several months.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Blockton Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior.  Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery.

Jair S. Wildman, son of William and Irene [Cowell] Wildman, was born in Gay Township, Taylor County, Iowa, March 2, 1871, being aged 66 years, 4 months and 29 days at the time of his death.

He grew to manhood in Gay Township and was married to Anna Smith in 1895.  To them were born three sons, William Wildman, Jr., of the home, James E. Wildman of Bedford, and Clifford H. Wildman of Davenport.

He is survived by his wife, the three sons, and one grandson, Quentin Wildman of Bedford.  Also by two brothers and two sisters, John Wildman of Blockton, Mrs. Walter Morris [Myrtle] of Red Bluff, Calif., W. [illiam] R. [ollin] Wildman of Bedford and Mrs. Ed[ward Morgan] Schneider [Mattie Pearl Wildman] of Blockton.

John Wildman Dies This Morning

John [Hemphill] Wildman, 78, of Bedford, died unexpectedly about 10 oÕclock this Thursday forenoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. Pearl Schneider, in the Wildman Apartments.  He had been ill and preparations were being made to take him to a hospital, and he passed away just as the ambulance arrived.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Schneider and Mrs. Myrtle Morris, both of Bedford.

The funeral services will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2 oÕclock Sunday afternoon, January 25, conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery at Blockton.
