[Hewitt, Clement Dee]

C. D. Hewitt, 69 Rites Jan. 16

Clement D. [ee] Hewitt, son of Clement D. [eforest] and Mary Deaver Hewitt, was born Sept. 1, 1897 and passed away January 14,1967 in the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa.

He was united in marriage on July 30, 1919 to Lena Hunter and to this union were born three sons, William C., Homer James and Mahlon H. [unter].

Most of his life was spent in Taylor County. He was a member of the Methodist Church. During World War I, he served in the U. S. Army overseas. He was a member of the American Legion Post Number 591.

He is survived by his wife, Lena; two sons, William C. of Montezuma, Iowa and Mahlon H. [unter] of Fairfield, Iowa. Two daughters in-law, Elizabeth and Charlotte; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two brothers, Glen of Omaha and Paul of Portage, Wisconsin; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Potts of Stuart, Ia. and Mrs. Hazel Porter of Erie, Penn., and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Homer who died in action in World War II, his parents, and two sisters, Mrs. Edna Potts and Mrs. Edith Reed.

Final rites were held Jan. 16, 1967 from 708 State Street in Bedford, Iowa at 2:00 P. M. with Rev. E. S. Tschetter officiating, burial in the Conway cemetery.

Hewitt Is Killed In Action

Homer James Hewitt, who was with the 9th Army, was killed in action Dec. 13, according to a notice from the War Department received by his wife, who resides in Baltimore, Md. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hewitt of Conway.

J. [ames] B. Hewitt died Sept. 14 at the home of his son at Conway, Ia. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery. Mr. Hewitt was a pioneer resident of Lenox having lived here before the town was built or any railroad here.

Old Settler Dies

James B. Hewitt, one of the old settlers of this part of Taylor County, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 1918, at the home of his son, Clem, southwest of town of leakage of the heart after an illness of eight days. He is well known to many of the older citizens as he was one of the first cheese makers in this county, and many of them speak of the fine quality of the cheese he used to make.  He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Abbie Richey of this city.

He was born July 1, 1837, in Wayne county, Ohio, and was married in that county Feb. 12, 1860, to Rebecca Matthews, and moved to this state in 1866, and lived 47 years in this county. OLD SETTLER DIES

James B. Hewitt, Dies Saturday At Home Of Son

James B. Hewitt one of the old settlers of this part of Taylor county, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 1918, at the home of his son Clem, southwest of town, of leakage of the heart after a at illness of eight days. The deceased had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for 51 years, and lived a Christian life, well liked and respected by all who knew him.

The funeral was held from the Presbyterian Church at Lenox, of which he had so long been a member, Tuesday afternoon at 2 p. m., and the burial was at Fairview cemetery.

The many friends of the family in the vicinity will join with the Review in extending heartiest sympathy to them in their hour of sorrow.

Final Rites Held For Lena D. Hewitt, 84

Funeral services for Lena D. Hewitt, 84, of Conway, were held on August 19 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. James Dale officiating. Mrs. Hewitt died on August 17, 1980 at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield, Iowa. Interment was in Conway Cemetery, Conway, Iowa.

Lena Diana Hunter Hewitt, daughter of Lucy D. [iana] Breckenridge and William H. [arrison] Hunter, was born near Bedford, Iowa on December 29, 1895.

When a small child, she moved with her parents to a farm near Conway, Iowa, where she attended public schools. She spent the rest of her life in and near Conway.

On July 30, 1919 she was united in marriage to Clement D. [ee] Hewitt of Conway. To this union three sons were born: William C., Homer James, and Mahlon H. [unter]

Lena was a member of the Conway Methodist Church, charter member of the Conway Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Lenox Navy Mothers' Club. She enjoyed her family and church work.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Homer James, who died in the service during World War II; one daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; her mother, father, seven brothers and three sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, William C., of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mahlon H.  [unter] and wife, Charlotte, of Fairfield, Iowa; one daughter-in-law and husband, Edith Hewitt Penn and Norman Penn of Titusville, Florida; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann Liebig

Mary Ann Liebig was born near Kalona, Iowa, to Charles and Charlotta Liebig on August 30, 1869, and at the time of her passing had attained the age of 64 years, 10 months and 18 days. She grew to womanhood in that community and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

On June 5, 1895 she was united in marriage to Geo. C. Ferguson, who preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1910. To this union were born three daughters, Zena Adkins of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Zora King of Tulsa, Okla., and Doris Anderson of Diagonal.

On April 15, 1913 she was married to C. [lement] D. [eforest] Hewitt of Lenox, Iowa. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, three daughters, two brothers, George Liebig of Iowa City, and Phillip of Diagonal, seven step children and twenty grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She has been a patient suffer for the past year and at noon July 14, passed peacefully on to her eternal rest, at the family home in Diagonal, Iowa.

Funeral services Monday afternoon were held at 2:30 at the home with Rev. Jordon in charge.

Pallbearers were A. C. Whipple, Howard Eno, Shan Richey, C. M. Whipple, Fred Richey and O. M. Brown.

Interment was made in the Clearfield cemetery.

Former Resident Dies

Mrs. Clem Hewitt, a former resident of Sharpsburg, died at her home in Diagonal Saturday. The funeral services were held in Clearfield Monday afternoon.

Dan Marsh, aged 87 years and 2 days, passed away at his home in Thayer, Kans., last week and the body was sent to Bedford Friday, and then taken to the Conway cemetery, where interment was made. Mr. Marsh was a resident of Conway for many years.

OBITUARY

Sarah B. Marsh

Sarah B. [ell] Marsh was born December 16, 1864 [1846], in Manchester, Ohio. She was married to Daniel Marsh September 7, 1865, at Topeka, Ill., and to this union two children were born, Harry L. [eonard] and Fred C. Marsh the latter dying in infancy.

She is survived by her husband, one son and one adopted son. One brother W.[illiam] R. Coppel and five grandchildren.

She united with the M. E. church in 1862 and remained a faithful member until her death, June 26.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock at the M. E. church conducted by Rev. J. E. Porter. Interment in Conway cemetery.

Mrs. Dan Marsh died at her home near Conway Thursday evening. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church in Conway Saturday at 11 a. m. conducted by the pastor, Rev. Corder. Interment was in the Conway cemetery. Mrs. Marsh was a sister of W. R. Copple of this city and a cousin of Joe Weeks, both of whom with their wives attended the funeral.

Services here for Fannie Belle Kopp

Services for Fannie Belle Kopp, 95, were held July 12 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Kopp died July 8, 1985 at Bedford Manor in Bedford. Interment was at Conway Cemetery in Conway, Ia.

Fannie Belle Lambley was born June 22, 1890 on a farm southeast of Conway, Iowa, being the oldest child of Thomas Eli Lambley and Elnora Query Lambley.

She attended the rural school in Taylor County Iowa and her teacher, Allie Nelson, taught her high school subjects. She attended one year at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

On February 7, 1912 she was united in marriage to Jesse Ross Kopp of Clearfield, Iowa at her parent's home near Conway, Iowa. To this union three children were born: two sons, who died in infancy, and one daughter, [Jessie] Maxine. Except for a short time spent on a homestead in South Dakota, she lived her entire life in Taylor County Iowa.

She and her husband lived on farms in Clayton Township until 1944 when they moved to Bedford, Iowa.

When she was a young girl she joined the Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for about sixty years. As long as health permitted, she was active in the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. [esse] Ross Kopp, who died November 9, 1974; her parents; two infant sons and her brother, Harry Lambley.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Maxine and her husband Zelbert Freemyer of Bedford, Iowa; two grandsons, Dr. Paul Freemyer and his wife Margaret and their five children of Helotes, Texas and, Attorney Howard Freemyer and his wife Sue and their four children of Jayton, Texas; a sister-in-law, Elsie Lambley of Creston, Iowa and two nieces and their families; other relatives and friends.

Belle was a dedicated Bible student and loved Bible study. She shared a love for flowers and enjoyed caring for them.

She will be remembered as a kind and loving wife, mother, friend and neighbor.

Her daughter Maxine is eternally grateful for the Christian home her parents provided for her.

Mrs. Kopp will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Born: To Mr. and Mrs. J. [esse] R. [oss] Kopp south of Conway, a son, April 28, which only lived to gladden the hearts of the parents a few hours. This was the first-born and the deepest sympathy of the entire community is extended. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday, April 29. Interment in Conway cemetery.
