[Leland Harold John]

Final Rites Held Here For L. Harold John

Funeral services for Leland Harold John, San Francisco, formerly of Bedford, held July 22 at State Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. John D. Kerr.  Mr. John died at his home in San Francisco, Calif., July 13, 1965, at the age of 62 years, four months, and 10 days. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Leland Harold John, son of Leon and Girda [Stickelman] John, was born on a farm near Bedford, March 8, 1903.  "Ike", as he was known, grew to manhood in Bedford where he attended school and became a member of the Christian church.

In his early twenties, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was assigned to the Marine Air Corps.  During this time he participated in the Haitian Uprising.  At the termination of his enlistment he returned to Bedford where he was employed by the Bedford Battery Co.

On May 24, 1930 at Sidney, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Dale Henry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. [obert] L. [etcher] Henry [Alice Marie Webb].  For a time Harold and Dorothy lived in South Dakota.  Then they moved to Auburn, Nebr., where he worked in a tire and battery shop until 1942.  At that time Harold re-enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  He served his country well.

He returned to Auburn, Nebr., after the war and then a few months later moved to San Francisco, Calif., where he made his home until his death.  One of his wishes was to be brought back home for his final resting place.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his mother, Girda John, and by three brothers and their wives, Vearon and his wife, Ruth, and Donald of Bedford, and Albert and his wife, Alice, of Corning, Iowa, and several uncles, aunts, nephews, and nieces and a host of friends.

Harold was a devoted husband, a kind and dependable friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Everhart of Skidmore, Mo., Mrs. Dallas Hynnek of Corning, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. George Cannon of San Diego, Calif., Miss Mae Steepy of Blockton, Ia., Mr. Carl Stickelman of Blockton, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Stickelman of Blockton, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. J. Huntington of Creston, Ia.

Carol Lee Henry Dies in S. Dak.

Funeral services were held Sat., July 16, at the American Legion Auditorium in Martin, S. Dak., for Carol Lee Henry, 62, former Bedford resident, who died July14 at St. Anthony's Hospital there.  Burial was in the Martin Cemetery.

Mr. Henry was born Aug. 24, 1903 in Taylor County, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. [etcher] Henry [Alice Marie Webb].

He married Leila Williamson in 1924 and they lived in the Jackson Township community until 1930 when they moved to Bennett County, South Dakota, where he became engaged in farming, living there until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Leila; one son, Carol, Jr., his wife and four children of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Hubert and Doyle, both of Bedford [Jackson Township]; three sisters, Mrs. C. [arroll] C. (Lola) Eckels and Mrs. Charles (Arlene) Sandquist, both of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Dorothy John of San Francisco; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Beryl of Bedford and Elvin who died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Henry [Irene Weir] and Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Henry [Phyllis Thompson] of Bedford attended the services.

Funeral services for Elmer C. Thompson, 90, of Bedford were held Jan. 11 at Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home conducted by J.D. Breyer.  Mr. Thompson died Jan. 9, 1967 at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville.  Interment was at New Hope Cemetery, Hopkins

Elmer Thompson Rites January 11

Funeral services for Elmer C. Thompson, 90, of Bedford were held Jan. 11 at Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, conducted by J.D. Breyer.  Mr. Thompson died Jan. 9, 1967 at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville.  Interment was at New Hope Cemetery, Hopkins.

Elmer Clarence Thompson was born Feb. 25, 1876 at Glenwood, Mo.

He was married to Bell May Wells in 1899 and to this union were born eight children.

Two children and his wife preceded him in death.

The surviving children are:  Paul and Claude of Bedford; [Forest] Doyle of Willits, Calif.; Aileen Rosenthal and Wilma Thomas, St. Joseph, Mo.; Naomi Thomas, Santa Rosa, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Arthur, and one sister, Flossie Newkirk.

Rites Held Here for Ethel Simpson

Graveside services for Ethel May Simpson, 81, of Fort Worth, Texas, were held Mon. Aug. 19 at Graceland Cemetery west of Bedford conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Simpson died August 17, 1968, at Fort Worth.

Ethel May Simpson, daughter of Eugene H. [arlan] Simpson [son of Fannie McCloud] and Alice May Salen Simpson, was born near Gravity September 25. 1886.

She was penmanship and grade teacher in the Bedford schools many years ago.  A sister, Mrs. Helen Shively, lives in California.  Here for the service were two nieces, Mrs. Wynne of Ft. Worth and Ada May of Benton, Ark.

Former Bedford Resident Dies in Oregon

Mrs. T. N. Longfellow of Newberg, Oregon, sent the Times-Press word of the recent death of Mrs. Frank (Nellie) Smith, 77, a former Bedford resident, of Monmouth, Oregon.  Mrs. Smith died at a Dallas nursing home.  A graveside service was held at Belcrest Cemetery, Monmouth.

She [Nellie Garnett Turner] was born in Green View, [Menard County] Ill., and lived in Iowa before moving to Monmouth in 1931.  She was a member of the Monmouth Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Frank; daughter Mrs. Garnet Townsend, Salem; son Richard Smith, Monmouth; and three grandchildren.

[SMITH, NELLIE GARNETT TURNER]

Nellie Smith – MONMOUTH – Mrs. Nellie Smith, 77, of 580 S. Monmouth Ave., Monmouth, died Friday at a Dallas nursing home.
She was born in Green View, Ill. and lived in Iowa before moving to Monmouth in 1931. She was a member of the Monmouth Christian Church.
Survivors include the widower Frank Smith, Monmouth; daughter Mrs. Garnet Townsend, Salem; son Richard Smith, Monmouth and three grandchildren.
Graveside service will be Tuesday at 10 a. m. at Belcrest Cemetery, Lynnton Elwell officiating. Parmenter Mortuary is in charge.
