[Smith, Gladys Maxine Forney Dale] Maxine Smith, age 88, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Monday, September 04, 2006 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at Siam Cemetery, Siam, Iowa, with the Reverend Phil Jorgensen officiating. There was open visitation at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda. Burial was in the Siam Cemetery. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.walker-merrick-wolfe-barr.com. Gladys Maxine Forney was born February 6, 1918, in Clarinda, Iowa to Charles and Zelma (Miller) Forney. Zelma Miller Forney died during the flue epidemic in 1918, leaving her infant daughter motherless. At the age of ten months, Maxine was adopted by Ernest and Maude Dale. Her beloved parents preceded her in death in 1960. Maxine began her education in the public school in Siam, Iowa. She completed her high school education in Sutherland, Nebraska. On March 7, 1938, she was united in marriage with Joseph G. Smith. No children were born to this union. Having no brothers, sisters or children, she lovingly embraced Joe’s family as her own. In 1951 Maxine and her husband placed their hand in the hand of God and were baptized in the First Christian Church, Omaha, Nebraska. In 1960, Maxine entered the school of cosmetology in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon graduation she was employed as a cosmetologist at the same shop for nine years. She was employed by Norma Jean Baker and they became fast friends. She leaves this friend to mourn her death. During this time in 1961, Maxine and her husband moved from Omaha to Council Bluffs. In late 1969, Maxine’s husband became ill and she remained home to care for him until his death, April 6, 1971. After her husband’s passing Maxine took a clerical/receptionist course at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. For some time she was employed as receptionist in the emergency room at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha. In early 1991, Maxine’s health began to fail. She moved to Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa where she resided for ten years. Maxine was preceded
in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include nieces, nephews and

[eorge] Smith, 64, of Council Bluffs were held April 9 in Clarinda at the Walker Funeral Home with burial at the Siam. Cemetery. He died Tuesday at the Jennie Edmundson hospital at Council Bluffs where he had retired from a lifetime of railroading three years ago because of ill heath. His boyhood was in the Siam vicinity, born Nov. 17, 1906 the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira and Pearl Davison Smith. He had spent 32 years as railroad worker with the Union Pacific. He was married to Maxine Dale on March 7, 1958 at Chappell, Nebr. His survivors include his wife; four sisters and three brothers including Mrs. Emory (Marybelle) Hardee, Mrs. Seth (Emsy) Clark, Mrs. Ray (Lavina) Jackson of Clarinda. Oscar Smith, age 88, of Sioux City, Iowa formerly of Clarinda, Iowa passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at St. Luke's Hospital hi Sioux City, Iowa. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2000, at the Siam Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Chrouser officiating and Masonic rites by Plumb Lodge A.F. & A.M. #285 of Siam, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Plumb Lodge, Siam, Iowa. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Oscar was born December 27, 1911, a mile east of Siam, Iowa. His parents were Ira [Wharton] and [Melissa] Pearl Davison Smith. Oscar attended grade school at Siam, Iowa, and was a graduate of Clarinda High School. He married Thelma Selders July 22, 1941; she preceded him in death February 4, 1983. To this union a daughter, Judy Kay was born. Oscar was united in marriage to Mildred Graves, September 24,1984; she preceded him in death in 1998. He was a 50 year member of Masonic Plumb Lodge A.F. & A.M. #285 at Siam, Iowa. Survivors include one grandson and three great grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Belle Hardee of Clarinda, Iowa, Arline Custer of Clarinda, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, wives, daughter, Judy Kay, May 11, 1990, brothers Joe, Howard, Lester, sisters, Lucille Finley, Emsy Clark and Lavina Jackson. Bedford Times-Press Thursday December 27, 1934 [p. 1] RILEY SMITH DIES Had Been Seriously Ill For Some Time---Funeral In Siam By Times-Press Siam Reporter Riley Smith died at the Methodist hospital in St. Joseph Saturday evening at 7:15 o'clock having been seriously ill for some time. His wife and daughters, Mrs. Blanche Manley of Siam, Mrs. Maude Dale of Sutherland, Nebr., and a son, Byron Smith of Burlington Junction, Mo., were with him at the time of his death. The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Siam Wednesday afternoon. The body was returned to the Wetmore Funeral home in Bedford Sunday where it laid in state until Wednesday. Rites were held from the Christian church in Siam. Interment was in the Siam cemetery. [Smith, Riley] Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 3, 1935 p. 5 Riley Smith Dies Hold Funeral Services and Bury At Siam Funeral services for Riley Smith, 73, who died at the Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, Saturday, Dec. 22, were held at the Church of Christ in Siam, Wednesday, Dec. 26, conducted by Rev. W. W. Kratzer. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. He was the son of Samuel and Nancy [Ellison] Smith, and was born in Toulon, Stark County, Ill., Sept. 30, 1861. At an early age he came from Illinois to Chariton, Iowa, where on Nov. 23, 1887, he was married to Rose B. [elle] Loan. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Burlington Junction, Mo., where all their children were raised. In 1908 they moved into Iowa, near Siam and since that time have lived in Clarinda, a short time, and at Siam since. They were the parents of six children, three having preceded him in death. Those surviving are his wife, three children, Mrs. Maude Dale of Sutherland, Nebr., Mrs. Blanche Manley of Hopkins, and Byron Smith of Bedford, one little grandson Donald Smith. Mrs. Perry Miller of Galva, Ill., a sister, also survives. He was a member of the Modern Woodman of America, and also of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Burlington Junction, Mo. [Smith, Riley] Taylor County Herald Thursday January 3, 1935 p. 3 Riley Smith, son of Samuel and Nancy [Ellison] Smith, was born in Toulon, Stark County, Ill., on Sept. 30, 1861, and departed this life in a St. Joe hospital on the evening of Dec. 22, 1934, at the age of 73 years, 2 months and 22 days. Those who are left to mourn his going are his wife and three children, Mrs. Maude Dale, Sutherland, Nebr., Mrs. Blanche Manley, Hopkins, Mo., and Byron Smith, Bedford, Iowa; one little grandson, Donald Smith, whom the grandfather dearly loved. One sister, Mrs. Perry Miller of Galva, Ill., also survives him. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Burlington Junction, Mo., where all their children were raised. In 1908 they moved into Iowa, near Siam and since that time have lived in Clarinda a short time and Siam ever since. He was a member of the Modern Woodman of America and also the Independent Order of Oddfellows Mr. Smith was a man having a multitude of friends, extending over a large territory and was known as a kind hearted man, ever ready to help those who needed help. He was a loving father, who loved and was loved very tenderly by those dearest to him. He was laid to rest beside Geraldine, who was the last of his family to precede him in death, she having died Aug. 14, 1927. Mr. Smith's funeral was held at the Church of Christ at Siam Wednesday, Dec. 26, 1934, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. W. Kratzer. Singers were Will Miller, Walter Radko, Mrs. Nellie Miller, Mrs. Happilona Farlow and Mrs. Lola Stewart with Mrs. Opal Stewart at the piano. The flowers were very profuse and bountiful, showing the esteem that Mr. Smith was held by friends. Taylor County Herald Thursday April 22, 1937 p. 8 Rites Friday for Mrs. Joe Stewart Rites were held Friday afternoon from the Siam Methodist church for Mrs. Joseph [Alonzo] Stewart [Jessie Alice Fry], 69, who died April 14 at her home southwest of Bedford. She leaves her husband; two sons, Clarence L. Stewart and Glen M. Stewart; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles Fry of Clarinda and Parl Fry of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The services were conducted by the Rev. Charles Arnold. She had been a charter member of the Slam Methodist church since its erection. [lonzo] Stewart, 69, died at her home at Siam, Wednesday, April 14. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Charles Arnold. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. Jessie Alice Fry, daughter of William [Filson] and Nancy [Jane] Loman Fry, was born in Woods county, Ohio, March 12, 1868. After spending her early childhood in Ohio she came with her parents westward in 1880, locating in Page county, near Clarinda, Iowa. Four years later the family moved to Taylor county, where she resided the remainder of her life. On March 17, 1887 she was united in marriage to Joseph A. [lonzo] Stewart. Their first home was established in Siam, Iowa. A short time later they moved to their present home, the place made dear to all her family because of the joys and sorrows shared together throughout the years. Five children came to bless their home, William Tilson [Filson] Stewart, who died in infancy; Mayme C. Friend, who preceded her mother in death only a few months, having passed away June 26, 1936; Charles Warren Stewart, who died in 1905, when twelve years old; Clarence L. Stewart and Glen M. Stewart, who with the husband survives. Also she leaves two very devoted daughters- in-law, Lola Fine Stewart, and Opal Clayton Stewart, and two grandchildren, Virginia and Glen Eldon, who were so dear to their grandma. Besides the immediate family she leaves two brothers, Charles Fry of Clarinda and Parl Fry of Fort Wayne, Ind. Her only sister, Mrs. Annie Clayton, preceded her in death in September 1905, and a brother Thomas Fry, who died in childhood. In early life she was converted in a revival meeting in Siam and the next year, when the Methodist church was built, she was among the first to cast her lot with that body, thereby becoming a charter member of the Siam Methodist church. During all the years that followed she always had the interest of the church in her heart, doing everything she could to promote welfare. On March 17, 1937, she and her husband celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. As a token of love, her church presented them with a lovely bouquet of roses, which, although she was confined to her bed, gave her much enjoyment. The roses faded and were gone, but their perfume lingered on, and so her life, as it slowly faded from us, has left its fragrance and long may the memory of her life be as a guiding star showing us the way to a better world. May the fine Christian fortitude which she manifested during all her suffering be our inspiration.
Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 22, 1948 [p. 1] Mrs. Stewart To Be Buried At Siam Mrs. Leta Ann Stewart of Bedford died early Wednesday morning at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda. The funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday forenoon, January 24 at the Methodist Church in Siam, conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye of Bedford. Burial will be in the Siam cemetery. Mrs. Stewart was the mother of Mrs. Don Douglas of Bedford. [Stewart, Leta Ann Melvin] Bedford Times-Press Thursday February 5, 1948 p. 7 Obituary - Mrs. Leta Stewart Leta Ann Melvin, daughter of Aberham [Abraham] and Hanna Melvin, was born March 13, 1885 near Harrington, Kansas, in Morris county, and died at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 8 days. All of her life was spent in the Siam and Bedford communities with the exception of six years, when she resided at Siloam Springs, Ark. She was married to William Lester Stewart on August 1, 1899. To them were born four children, Nellie deceased, Mrs. Verga Chesney of Siloam Springs, Ark., Mrs. Don Douglas of Bedford, and Marion Stewart of Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Her three children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive. She was one of a family of seven children. Four brothers survive: they are Harry, Abe, John and Dick Melvin, all of Enid, Oklahoma. In 1914 she united with the Methodist church at Siam. During her Illness she was very patient and uncomplaining. She was a loving mother and was loved by all who knew her. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam, Saturday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. The funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Siam at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. Douglass Steffenson of Bedford. Burial will be in the Siam cemetery. She is survived by her husband and five children, Mrs. Jim Lee and Mrs. Willis King of the Bedford community; Mrs. Geo. Sharp and Alfred Stewart of near Blockton; and Miss Doris Stewart of the home. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. Douglass Steffenson of Bedford. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. Nettie Centennial Goff, daughter of Warren and Martha [Ann Lane] Goff, was born in Knox county, Ill., March 8, 1876, being aged 65 years, 7 months, and 22 days at the time of her death. She came with her parents to Taylor county, Iowa, 47 years ago and had made her home here since. She was married to Frank Stewart on Jan. 10, 1895. To them were born seven children: Mrs. Jim Lee and Mrs. Willis King, of Bedford, Mrs. George Sharp and Alfred Stewart of Blockton, Miss Doris Stewart of the home, and two children who died in infancy. Mrs. Stewart was a kind and loving wife and mother, always sacrificing for the family and home; a good neighbor and a friend to all. She was a member of the Siam Methodist church. Surviving with the husband and five children are nine grand children and also three sisters, Mrs. Arthur Salen of Lenox, Mrs. Ainley McCoy of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Leslie McCoy of Creston. Bedford Times-Press Thursday April 3, 1941 [p. 1] William Stewart, 66, Dies Here Monday William Stewart, 66, died at the home of his daughter and her husband Mr. and Mrs. Don Douglas in Bedford Monday, March 31, after having been in failing health for several years. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Paul Barton of Hopkins. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. William Lester Stewart, son of David McCune and Katherine Elizabeth Stewart, was born March 18, 1875 in Taylor county, near Siam, Iowa, and died at the home of his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Don Douglas in Bedford, Monday, March 31, at the age of 66 years and 13 days. All of his life was spent in the Siam and Bedford communities, with the exception or six years, when he resided at Siloam Springs, Arkansas. He was married to Leta A. [nn] Melvin, August 1, 1899. To them were born four children: Nellie, deceased; Mrs. Virgie Chisney of Siloam Springs Ark.; Mrs. Lena Douglas of Bedford and Marion Stewart of this community. His wife and three children survive; also six grandchildren. He was one of a family of eleven children, five brothers and four sisters surviving. They are Frank Stewart, Lee Stewart, Delton Stewart, Jake Stewart, Bert Stewart, Mrs. Bell Manley, Mrs. Emza Melvin, Mrs. Josie Foreman and Mrs. Ella Perkins, all of the Bedford community. His father, mother and one sister, Dessie, preceded him in death. In 1914 he united with the Methodist church at Siam. During his illness he was very patient and uncomplaining. He was a loving companion and father and a good neighbor. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Paul Barton of Hopkins. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.
