Obituary - G. C. Manley

Grover C. [leveland] Manley, son of F. [rancis] M. [arion] and Sarah Sabina Ramsay] Manley, was born near Siam on April 12, 1884 [1885] and died at his home near Siam on February 16, 1940 aged 55 years, 10 months and 4 days.

On March 19, 1916 he was married to Stella Blanche Smith at Clarinda.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Orville and Wilbur; two brothers, Elza of Sheridan, Mo., Silas of Cherokee, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Mary McNinch [McMinch] and Mrs. Golda Catuska of Lincoln, Nebr.; a niece, Mrs. Pearl McGurk of Lincoln; a nephew, Francis Manley of Sheridan; an aunt, Mrs. Mary Landon of Bedford; an uncle, Charley Manley of Barnard, Mo., and his stepmother, Mrs. Crystal Manley of Siam.

He was preceded in death by his mother in October 1923, his brother, Walter in November 1918 and his father, May 15, 1939.

Grover Manley was reared in the vicinity of Siam where he devoted his time to the occupation of farming. He was of a genial disposition, a good neighbor and citizen, who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Rites were held Sunday, Feb. 18 from the Siam church of Christ with the Rev. C. Max Buck in charge. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Leta Mae Manley

Funeral services for Mrs. Leta M. [ae] Manley, 68, New Market, will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 1990, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating.  

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m., Friday evening.

Mrs. Manley died Tuesday evening, April 17, 1990, at St. Frances Medical Center in Grand Island, Neb. She had been visiting her son and wife at Phillips, Neb., when she became ill and entered the hospital.

She was born May 19,1921, at New Market, the daughter of Clarence (Doc) and Mary A. [nderson] Harkless Keith. On December 31, 1941, she was married to Orville L. [ee] Manley who preceded her in death in 1985. They lived in the Siam area and after Mr. Manley's death she moved into New Market.

Mrs. Manley is survived by three children: James O. [rville] Manley of Washington, Ia., Merilee [Margaret] Manley, Clarinda, and Edward Alan Manley, Phillips, Neb. There are two grandchildren, Madina and Michael Manley.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband, and one sister.

Burial will be in Siam Cemetery.

OREN D. MANLEY

Funeral service for Oren D. Manley, 88, were conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings April 25, 1987 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. Burial was in Siam Cemetery. Mr. Manley died April 22, 1987 at Bedford Manor, Bedford, Ia.

Oren Delton Manley, son of Wilfred Leroy Manley and Anna Belle Stewart Manley, was born at Bedford, Iowa April 29, 1898 and departed this life April 22, 1987 at Bedford Manor at the age of 88 years 11 months and 23 days.

He grew to maturity in the Bedford and Siam communities where he attended the public school.

He was employed as an automobile mechanic most of his active years and after retiring he took up small motor repair and helped many folks keep their lawn mowers in good running order.

Oren had a very pleasant manner and enjoyed people and shared a good sense of humor and fellowship with his friends and acquaintances.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Wilfred Manley.

He is survived by two sisters:  Thelma Duncan of Bedford; Alice Wilson of Paris, Ca. and two brothers Cecil Manley of Corona, Ca.  and Orie Manley of Corning; other  relatives and friends.

His family and friends will remember him as a kind and  considerate loved one.

Saturday services for Orville Manley

Funeral services for Orville L. [ee] Manley, 70, of the Siam area will be at 1:30 pm Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, with Carl Cummings officiating.

Visitation will be from 7-8 pm this Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Manley died Dec. 10, 1985 in the evening at his home, east of Siam.

He was born July 8, 1915, in Taylor County, the son of Walter S. [ilvester] and Sarah Ella Abbott Manley.

On Dec. 31, 1941 he was married to Leta Keith at Maryville, Mo.

Mr. and Mrs. Manley farmed in the Siam area.

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by three children, James O. [rville] Manley, Washington, Ia, Merilee [Margaret] Manley, Clarinda, Edward Alan Manley, York, Ne. There are two grandchildren. Brothers and sisters include Wilbur Manley, Freeman, Mo, Gerald Norris, George Norris, Frank Norris, all of Bedford, Ia, Arlo Norris in California and Mrs. Wanda Traster, Corning, Ia. There are several nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund is being established.

Burial will be in the Siam cemetery.

Services held for Orville Manley

Services for Orville L. [ee] Manley, 70, were held December 14 at Walker-Merrick Funeral. Home, Clarinda, with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Interment was at Siam Cemetery. Mr. Manley died Dec. 10, 1985 at his home east of Siam. Orville L. [ee] Manley, son of Walter S. [ilvester] Manley and Sarah Ella Abbott Manley, was born in Taylor County Iowa and grew to maturity in the community where he was born, where he attended the public school and took part in the various community activities.

On December 31, 1941 he was united in marriage to Leta Keith at Maryville, Missouri and they lived in the Siam area and followed the occupation of farming.

Besides his wife Leta of the home, he is survived by three children: James O.[rville] Manley, Washington, Iowa; Merilee [Margaret] Manley, Clarinda, Iowa; Edward Alan Manley, York, Nebraska; two grandchildren: Nadine Joy and Michael James.

Brothers and sisters include Wilbur Manley, Freeman, Mo.; Gerald Norris, George Norris, Frank Norris, all of Bedford, Iowa; Arlo Norris of California; and Mrs. Wanda Traster, Corning, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Orville will long be remembered as a kind and considerate husband, all who knew him will sadly miss father and grandfather and him.

Walter [Silvester] Manley, third son of Mr. and Mrs. F. [rancis] M. [arion] Manley was born near Siam, Ia., March 28, 1877 and died at his home November 3, 1918 of Spanish Influenza. He was united in marriage in August 1913 to Miss [Sarah] Ella Abbott of near Bedford, Ia. To this union two children were born, Orville Lee aged 3 years and Wilbur Grover aged one. Beside his wife and children he leaves a father, and mother, F. [rancis] M. [arion] and Sarah Manley, three brothers, Elza [Jonathan] Manley of Gravity, Grover and Silas [Harold] of Siam and two sisters, Mrs. Mary White and Miss Golda of Siam. Walter grew to manhood here on the old home farm and had many friends who are deeply grieved at his early death. Short funeral services were held at the open grave by Rev. Lowe of Bedford, and he was laid to rest at 4 o'clock Sunday evening. The sorrowing wife, little ones and other relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.

Obituary—Walter Manley

Walter Manley died at his home near Siam, Sunday November 3rd. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Lowe of Bedford and interment was made in the Siam cemetery. Music was furnished by a local quartet.

Walter Silvester Manley was born near Siam, Taylor county, Iowa on March 28 1887 and departed this life at his home near Siam November' 3rd, aged 31 years, 7 months and 6 days.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. [rancis] M. [arion] Manley of Siam. Walter was married to [Sarah] Ella Abbot August 26, 1913. To this union was born two children, Orval Lee age 3 years and Wilber Grover, age 1 year.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and two children, father, mother, three brothers and two sisters, Elza [Jonathan] Manley of Gravity, Grover Manley, Hopkins, Mary White, Siam and Golda [Pearl] and Silas [Harold], both at home.

He wanted to go home and asked the good Lord to come down. He called the names of the family and bid each goodbye although they were not there in person they were in heart. All was done loving hands could do.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and besides his relatives he leaves a host of friends.

WALTER MANLEY

Polk Township Resilient Victim of Flu, Buried Sunday

After an illness of only a week and a day, Walter S. [ilvester] Manley died at his home in Polk Township Sunday from the effects of Spanish influenza. His entire family were sick with the disease at the time, and his wife was unconscious herself when he passed away.

Walter Sylvester Manley was born in Polk Township, which has always been his home. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. [rancis] M. [arion] Manley, and was 32 years, 4 months and 3 days old at the time of his death. He was a strong and active young man, held in the highest esteem by his many friends. On August 22, 1913, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Abbott [Sarah Ella] and to this union two children were born, both of whom survive, together with his wife and parents, to mourn his untimely death. The brothers and sisters still living are Elzie [Elza Jonathan] Manley of Gravity, Silas [Harold] Manley of Polk township, Grover Manley of Hopkins, and Mrs. Mary White and Miss Goldie [Pearl] Manley at home in Polk township.

Owing to the nature of the disease the funeral was necessarily private, and the remains were laid to rest in the Slam cemetery Sunday afternoon, after a brief service conducted by Lowe of the Christian church of Bedford. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.

 

[Miller, Eldon Weston]

Eldon W. Miller, age 91, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Church of Christ, Siam, Iowa with Loren Daly officiating. Masonic services were held 6:30 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2005, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa and visitation with the family to follow. Burial was in the Siam Cemetery, Siam, Iowa. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Eldon Weston Miller was born August 5, 1913, near Siam, Iowa, to John Weston [Huston] Miller and [Anna] Pearl (Summers) Miller. He grew up in the Siam area and went to school there. He married Anna Beery July 28, 1936 at Shenandoah, Iowa. They celebrated 68 years of marriage. Born to this union were Norma Jean Miller, Joyce Miller Nielsen, Marsha Griffith Nielsen, John Miller, June Chavez and Mary Lou Lindburg. Eldon was a lifelong farmer in the Siam area. He was an active lifelong member of the Siam Church of Christ where he was a Sunday school teacher. Eldon was a 60 + year member of the Masonic Plumb Lodge #285. In his spare time, Eldon enjoyed fishing, baseball, reading, geography, and storytelling. His role model was Will Rogers, “I never met a man I didn’t like.” He was the honest man that his children have known.

Preceding Eldon in death were his parents; daughters, Norma Jean Miller and Joyce Nielsen; sons-in-law, Ed Chavez and Larry Griffith and granddaughter, Teresa Leland. Survivors include his wife Anna of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter, Marsha Griffith Nielsen and her husband Knud of Fort Morgan, Colorado; John Miller and his wife Betty of New Market, Iowa; daughter, June Chavez of Denver, Colorado; Mary Lou Lindburg and her husband Dave of Villisca, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grand children.

Obituary - John H. Miller

John Huston Miller, son of Milton Weston and Elizabeth [Jane] Acree Miller, was born on a farm west of Siam in Page County, Iowa, June 11, 1877, and died at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda Dec. 26, 1942 at the age of 65 years, 6 months and 15 days.

He had been in failing health for the past seven years and for the past two years had been an invalid, spending the last three months of his life in bed. He was very patient during his illness, even when his frail body was tortured with pain.

He received his education in the schools of Page and Taylor counties and made farming his life’s work. He confessed his faith in the Lord and was baptized in the Christian church at Siam by Rev. U. G. Miller in 1898.

On Nov. 6, 1906 he was married to Anna Pearl Summers, who preceded him in death April 19, 1931. One child, Eldon Weston Miller, came to bless their home.

On July 15, 1936 he was married to Mattie Marie Hosman who died Feb. 14, 1942 in Phoenix, Arizona. His mother died July 14, 1918 and his father Nov. 15, 1937, leaving of his immediate family only his son, Eldon W. [eston] Miller; daughter-in-law, Anna Miller; and small granddaughter Joyce Marie Miller. He was tenderly cared for by his son and wife after the death of his wife.

Other relatives are his brothers, Wm. W. [eston] Miller of the Siam community; a sister, Mrs. Lola Reid of Clarinda; two aged uncles, W. F. Miller of Hopkins and Albert J. Acree of Hood River, Oregon; one aunt, Mrs. Belle Miller of Shambaugh; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Wm. Miller.

John spent his life in the Siam community with the exception of about two years spent in Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona.

The funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 o’clock at the Christian church in Siam by Rev. C. M. Eppard of Clarinda, assisted by Rev. Mr. Mullen of New Market. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.
