Mrs. Audra Fern Davison, 82, of Clarinda died Thursday morning, April 23, at Goldenrod Manor Nursing home in Clarinda. She was born May 9, 1909 at Clarinda, the daughter of James C. and Rosa N. [ell] Darnold Smith. On April 3, 1929 she was married to Russell H. [obart] Gant who preceded her in death. On February 15, 1942 she was married to Merle McComb who also preceded her in death. On January 28, 1965 she married Clifford [Wesley] Davison who died in 1990. Mrs. Davison had been a resident of the care center for the past few months. She is survived by her son Hobert [Hobart] Gant of Coin, two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Brothers and sisters are Walter Smith, Bedford; Earnie Smith, Chico, Ca. Hilda Lymer, Wichita, Ks.; Normal Hall, Lena, Ia.; Eula Warneke, Council Bluffs; Opal Christensen, Iowa Falls; Ermol Kelso, Clarinda. She was preceded in death by parents, husbands, one sister, and one brother. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon April 27, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Pastor Nathan Little and Dr. Randall Gant officiating. Burial was in the Siam Cemetery. Bedford Times-Republican Thursday December 28, 1922 [p. 1] Dies Very Suddenly Word was received at this office this morning announcing the sudden death of Mrs. Wm. Fry at her home in southwest Bedford at 1 o'clock this morning. Her death came as a shock to the entire community, even the doctor could hardly believe that she had passed away, having called to see her last evening. Her death was caused from heart failure. This removes from our midst a good woman. She was all that a true mother could be and has left to the children a Christian heritage that time cannot take away, or the power of the world blot out. Mrs. Fry "kept the faith" and when the sad ending came, sad for those who remain, it completed her victory of all things here and enabled her to accept the crown awaiting her. It was truly her coronation day, and" "Thanks be to God who giveth her the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ." She will be sadly missed in the church and community, but “all is well" and the Christian faith of the family enables them to say, though hard sometimes, ''Have thine own way, Lord, Knowing that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord. May our lives be as beautiful. She has handed down to us the torch of faith; may it be ours to hold it high. We will not break faith with her, but will strive to remain true to the heroic example of faith and fortitude which she has left. The sympathy of all who know them is extended to Mr. Fry and the stricken family in the hour of their great sorrow. Obituary in our next issue. [Fry, Nancy Jane Loman] Bedford Times-Republican Tuesday January 2, 1923 p. 4 Obituary Nancy J. [ane] Loman was born January 14th, 1848, in Wood County, Ohio. She was one of a family of six children and only one brother, T. R. Loman of New Market, survives her. She was married to William [Filson] Fry, October 5th, 1865, so they have traveled life's rugged road together for over half a century. They lived in Ohio until 1880 when they moved to Page County, Iowa, later to Taylor County and then in 1907 they came to Bedford to make their home. The deceased was the mother of five children, four of whom grew to maturity, but one daughter, Anna C. Clayton, passed from this life in 1905. Of the other children Jessie A. [lice] Stewart lives at Siam, Chas. W. at Clarinda and Parl L. at Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. and Mrs. Fry joined the United Brethren church in 1880, and then in the year 1884 they transferred to the Methodist church in Siam and later when they came to Bedford their membership was moved to this church. Sister Fry was an earnest loyal Christian and though not able to attend church much in later years on account of ill health yet those who knew her best can testify to her sweet Christian spirit and her devotion to the Kingdom of her Lord. Although she had not been well for years yet the last summons to the better world came without warning and in the middle of the night she quietly slipped away to be with her Master. Besides the immediate family she leaves nine grand children and four great grand children, also a host of friends, all of whom will ever remember her as they last saw her in life, cheerful and kind and ever devoted to the interests of her home and loved ones. William Filson Fry, son of Geo. and Julia Anna Fry, was born in Holmes county, Ohio, October 14, 1841, and died June 30, 1927. When but a child his parents moved to Wood county, Ohio, and when 19 years of age on the 21st day of Sept., 1861, he enlisted in the Union army, and was discharged Oct. 1, 1864. He was a member of Co. B., of the Ohio infantry. He was a member of the G. A. R., in Bedford. He was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Jane Loman, Oct. 5, 1865. To this union 5 children were born, 2 girls and 3 boys, 2 having proceeded him to his reward. Mr. Fry moved to Iowa in the fall of 1880, near Siam. In 1907 he moved to Bedford until the death of his wife Dec. 28, 1922. Then he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jessie Stewart until his death. He has suffered more or less for a number of years, the closer the end the more intense was the suffering. Yet he never complained. He was a kind husband, a good father and was loved by all who knew him. He gave his heart to the Lord in early life and united with the United Brethren church until coming to Iowa. He then joined the Methodist church at Siam, and when he moved to Bedford he took his letter with him. He has lived a long faithful life, always putting Christ and his church first. He leaves to mourn, three children, Mrs. Jessie Stewart of Siam, Ia., Charley of Clarinda, Parl of Ft. Wayne, Ind. Also nine grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one brother and one sister in Ohio, one sister in Oklahoma and a host of friends.
Hopkins Journal Wednesday September 27, 1995 Alvin Leroy Gray, 74, of Hopkins, MO, passed away on Friday, September 22, 1995, at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville. Born on December 12, 1920, in Pickering, to George Estel and Phemmie Coltilda [Phemia Clotilda] Roush Gray, he was a retired farmer and had worked at the J. L. Houston Metal Culvert Plant in Hopkins. Mr. Gray had been a resident of Hopkins for most of his life. He was a graduate of the Bedford, Iowa High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was member of the Glen Ulmer American Legion Post 288 in Hopkins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, and two sisters. Survivors include one brother, Glenn Wayne Gray and his wife Doris of Cottonwood, AR; two sisters, Elva Mae Knirem [Knierem] of Tabor, Iowa and Ferne Irene Jones, and her husband Harry of Dickerson, Texas; one sister-in-law, Alice Gray of Hopkins; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 26,1995, at the Swanson-Price Funeral Chapel in Hopkins. Burial was in the Siam Cemetery, Siam, Iowa. Ernest Gray, age 94, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Siam, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, with Loren Daly officiating. Masonic service with Don Humphey, W.M. officiating was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 22, with visitation with the family following. Burial was at the Siam Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Christian Church, Siam, Iowa, or to the Masonic Plumb Lodge of Siam, Iowa. Ernest Emmett Gray was born near Elmo, Missouri, on October 22, 1906, to George Walter Gray and Rosa Zella Stuart Gray. He attended grade school at Unity School east of Hopkins, Missouri and Stokes Mound District 8 School in Carroll County, Missouri. Ernest was united in marriage on August 10, 1933, in King City, Missouri, to Ethel Blanche Gant. He farmed in the Siam area and was a buyer, clerk and cashier at the Clarinda Auction Company for 43 years. Ernest was a member of the New Market School Board in 1963 to 1969 and was president of the Board from 1967 to 1968. He was treasurer of Buchanan Township School District Page County. Ernest was township assessor of Amity, Buchanan, East River and Harlan Townships. He was clerk of Buchanan Township election board for several years and township A.S.C. committee member. Ernest was a member of Masonic Plumb Lodge, Siam, Iowa, since February 8, 1930 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since March 1938. Ernest was also a member of the Christian Church of Siam, Iowa, and secretary/ treasurer of the church for 45 years. Survivors include his daughters, Janice [Florence] Settles and husband, J. [on] D. [avid] of Blue Eye, Missouri, Karen Runyan of Emerson, Iowa; son, Steven Gray and wife, Lisa of Indianola, Iowa; ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; sister, Nellie Shaw of Trenton, Missouri; brother, Charles Gray and wife, Faye of Maryville, Missouri; half-brother, Dale Walter Gray and wife, Inez of Clarinda, Iowa; half-sister, Dorothy Gray Arthur of Clarinda, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel, on November 13,1990; two grandsons; brothers, James Gray and John Gray; sisters, Ida Reynolds, Mary Manuel, Goldie Clayton and Lillie Peterson. Mrs. Ernest (Ethel Blanche) Gray, 76, of the Siam area died Tuesday morning at Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she had been admitted the evening before. She was born February 4, 1914, near Siam, Iowa, the daughter of Charles [Newton] and Florence [Idell] Goodrich Gant. On August 10,1933, she was married Ernest [Emmett] Gray who survives. Mrs. Gray had lived in the same area all of her lifer She is survived by her husband Ernest of the home and three children: Mrs. J.[on] [avid] D. (Janice) Settles, Blue Eye, Mo., Karen Runyan, Emerson, Ia., and Steven Gray, Indianola, Iowa. There are nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, two sisters, two brothers, and two grandsons. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Highland Chapter #523 OES will have services at 7 p.m., this Thursday evening at the funeral home to be followed by visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Siam Church of Christ. Several from here attended the George Gray funeral at the Methodist Church in Hopkins Saturday afternoon. He lived at Siam at one time. He leaves his wife, the former, Phemia Roush and six children, Kenneth at Parnell, Bonnie and Elva In Clarinda, Glen in California, Ferne in Maryville and Alvin [Leroy] of the home. (Phemie) Gray, 89, of Parnell, Mo., former resident of Hopkins. Mo., were held April 14 at Wray United Methodist Church in Hopkins officiated by Rev. Richard Grossman. Mrs. Gray died April 11 at the home of a son, Kenneth Gray, Parnell, Mo., where she had lived the last four and one-half years. Interment was at the Siam Cemetery. Phemie Choletilda [Clotilda] Gray was born December 21, 1885 to Charles D.[odd] and Margaret J. [ane] (Clayton) Roush in Taylor County near Siam. She joined the Methodist Church in Siam as a young girl. She was married March 21, 1907 at Hopkins to George E. [stel] Gray who died December 2, 1970. To this union eight children were born. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Maude and Estel, who died in infancy, and two brothers, Henry and Theodore Roush. She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Gray, Parnell, Mo., Alvin [Leroy] Gray, Hopkins and Glen Gray of Newhall, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Bonnie) Friend and Mrs. Henry (Elva) Knierim, both of Clarinda, Ia., and Mrs. Harry (Ferne) Jones, La Marque, Texas; 31 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; two brothers, Ernest Roush and wife, Mary, Des Moines, Iowa, and Lester Roush Sr., and wife, Ruby, Ravenwood; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Eva) Blessman, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Mrs. Grace Blessman, Clearfield, Ia.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry (Carrie) Roush, Clearmont; nieces, nephews and friends. South-West Democrat Friday March 9, 1888 p. 4 Our Dear One Died, at Siam, Iowa, Malinda, little daughter of H. [arrison] B. and Mary [Frances Hutchinson] Hankins, after an illness of eight days, of pneumonia. After a brief service held by Brother Joseph Stewart and H. H. Roush, of Siam, the remains were quietly laid to rest in the Siam Cemetery where the dust of the poor little body awaits the trumpet of the resurrection to call it forth, to give it a spiritual body when the mortal shell shall put on its mortality, then we can defy the cold hand of death, and say you can not enter the mansion of glory and pluck our little Malinda from us again. Malinda was 13 months and ten days old, began to prattle around the house, and was a sweet and lovely little child, a pet with all who knew her. We give our deepest sympathies to the father and mother of dear little Malinda, praying that the comforting influence of the Holy Spirit will comfort them in their trouble. Roush Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 23, 1946 p. 2 New Market Pearl Head Dies [John] Pearl Head, 69, passed away Thursday evening at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, having suffered a paralytic stroke. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Leona Werts; and one son Raymond Head. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist church in New Market. [Head, John Pearl] Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 30, 1946 p. 3 Obituary - John Head John Pearl, son of John S. [teve] and Martha E. [llen Orme] Head, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, March 3, 1877 and died at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda March 16, 1946, age 69 years, 2 months and 13 days. His entire life was spent in Taylor County, except one year at Sheridan, Mo. He was of a kind disposition and was a lover of his home, his family and his friends. He was married to Clara B. [elle] Sollars on October 8, 1902. Three children were born to them. His wife preceded him in death in 1908. In 1924 he confessed faith in his Savior and united with the Methodist church at Hawleyville. In May 1930 he was married to Ethel Clare Scrivner, the remainder of his life being spent on a farm near Siam. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Head, a son, Raymond Head, and daughter, Leona Werts of New Market; four grandchildren, Winna and Donna Lee Head, Marie and Robert Werts and wife Betty; three sisters, Elizabeth Ridnour. Mary and Alice Head, all of New Market. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, May 21 at the Methodist church in New Market, conducted by the pastor, Miss Rose Mace. Burial was in the Hawleyville cemetery. Those from a distance attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ora Kendrick, Mr. and Mrs. Blouse of Chariton, Ivan Ridnour and son Leo of Davenport, Claude Ridnour of Creston, Mrs. Harvey Luther of Grinnell, Miss Winona Head of Mount Pleasant. |
