Final Rites Here Tuesday For Pearl Thompson, 87

Funeral services for Mrs. Lester (Pearl) Thompson, 87, of Bedford, held Tuesday, May 1, were conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Thompson died at West Heights Manor in Clarinda, April 28.  Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, Bedford.

Last Rites Held May 1 For Pearl Thompson

Funeral services for Mrs. Lester (Pearl) Thompson, 87, of Bedford, held May 1 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Thompson died April 28, 1973.   Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, near Bedford.

Pearl Marie Clark, daughter of George W. Clark and Cora McAlpin Clark, was born at New Market, Iowa, April 14, 1886.

She moved with her parents to Bedford where she attended the public school and was graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1905.  She taught in the rural schools of Taylor County for several years.

On December 22, 1909, she was united in marriage to Oren Lester Thompson at the home of the bride's parents in Bedford, Iowa.  They engaged in farming until Mr. Thompson died September 24, 1950 and she then moved in to Bedford where she has since continued to reside.

During the Billy Sunday Evangelistic Meetings in Bedford she gave her heart to her Lord and she has been an active and faithful member of the Methodist Church throughout the years.  She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Triangle Club and the 3 B Club, having held various offices in these organizations.  She had served as a 4-H Club leader for a number of years; she enjoyed working with youth and took a special interest in them.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Left to cherish her memory are a brother, Glenn H. Clark of Appleton, Wisc., and a sister, Mrs. Vesta Clark Barrans of Lenox, Ia.; a niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Byler of Appleton, Wisc.; other relatives and many friends.

Even though she had been in ill health for some time, she was patient in her declining health and appreciated the time, the care and concern of her doctors, the nurses and other family and loved ones, especially Allen and Hazel Thompson whom she loved as her own.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Lola Henry Eckles Last Rites Held in Salt Lake City

Funeral services for Mrs. Carrol (Lola Henry) Eckles [Eckels], 71, Salt Lake City, Utah, were held November 29 at the Neil O'Donnell Mortuary in Salt Lake City.  Mrs. Eckles died November 25, 1976 at home of natural causes.  Interment was at Mooserest Memorial Plot, Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Lola Henry Eckles was born August 23, 1905, Bedford, Iowa, to Robert L. [etcher] and Allie Webb Henry.  She married Carrol “Chubby” Eckles, Olathe, Kansas, May 14, 1932.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church.  Lola grew up in Taylor County and taught school a number of years, then moved with her husband to Salt Lake City in the 30's.

Survivors include: husband; two brothers, Doyle Henry, Hubert Henry, of Bedford; sisters, Mary Arline Sandquist, Salt Lake City and Dorothy D. John, San Francisco, California.

Hubert Henry, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Henry [Phyllis Thompson], of Bedford, Clifford Henry of Boone, Iowa, and Peggy Henry of Greeley, Colorado flew to Salt Lake City to attend the services.

Final Rites Held Here June 27

Funeral services for Dean Edwin Mullen, 60, of Bedford, held June 27 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were officiated by Carl Cummings.  Mr. Mullen died June 23, 1977 at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.  Interment was at Lexington Cemetery, near Bedford.

Dean Edwin Mullen, son of Al [exander] Mullen and Clara Duff Goltry Mullen, was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, July 31, 1916.

He moved with his parents to a farm west of Bedford when he was a small lad.  He grew to maturity in this area and attended the public school and was graduated from Bedford High School.

In 1948 he was united in marriage to Doris Griffith and seven children were born to them.

He engaged in farming for a number of years during which time he served as a substitute rural mail carrier.  He had been employed by the Department of Transportation (Iowa State Highway) since 1954.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Christina Kay, who died in infancy, and a brother Merton Mullen.

Left to cherish his memory are his children:  Stephen; Sandra and her husband, Stephen Lock; William; Rebecca and Brenda of Bedford; and Richard and his wife, Valerie, of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Michelle; brothers and sisters:  Marjorie Wheeler and her husband Orvis; Robert Mullen and his wife, Ellen Jean [Thompson], of Bedford; Kenneth Mullen and his wife, Lois, of Arcadia, Calif.; Doris Rhue and her husband, William, of La Canada, Calif.; Jean McQuaid and her husband, Francis, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, other relatives and many friends.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.  He will be remembered as a kind father and brother and will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Georgia Ford, 86

Final Rites Held December 19

Funeral services for Mrs. Robert O. (Georgia K.) Ford, 86, formerly of Blockton and Bedford, were held December 19 in the Blockton Christian Church with Pastor Glen Mitchell officiating.  Mrs. Ford died December 16, 1977, in Clearview Nursing Home, Clearfield, Ia.  Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Georgia K. Ford, daughter of Benjamin [Franklin] and Anna [Allcott] Kemery, was born November 17 1891.   She was the last surviving member of a family of six children.

She had lived her entire life in Taylor County.  Before and for a short time after her marriage, she was a rural schoolteacher.

On November 6, 1912, she was married to Robert O. Ford and they had one son, Don.

She was a member of the Blockton Christian Church and served as treasurer of the Sunday School for many years.  She was a 50-year member of the Hyacinth Chapter Blockton O.E.S. having served as a Worthy Matron.

For many years she was a substitute letter carrier out of the Blockton Post Office.  After the death of her husband she resided in Bedford for 15 years helping old people.

She is survived by one son, Don, and his wife, Audra [Bridges].

Last Rites Held in Bedford For Flossie Newkirk

Funeral services for Mrs. Garret Roy (Flossie Pearl) Newkirk, 85, of Bedford, held June 17 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Mel Smith.  Mrs. Newkirk died June 14, 1979 in Bedford Manor, Bedford.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Flossie Pearl Thompson Newkirk, daughter of Ira and Alice Thompson [Iowa Alice Warder], was born in Taylor County, Iowa on July 7, 1893.

Flossie was the youngest of eight children, and grew to maturity in Taylor County, except for a short time in southern Missouri.  She attended rural schools in Taylor County and the Gilead Church.  Later, Flossie joined the Bedford Christian Church.

On February 21, 1912, she was united in marriage to Garret Roy Newkirk in the home of her parents.  They farmed in the Bedford area all their married lives.  To this union five children were born, the eldest dying in infancy.

Flossie was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, on March 9, 1963; her parents and her five brothers and two sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Howard Dale and wife, Inez, of Hamburg, Iowa; Roy Dwight and wife, Helen Ruth, of Shenandoah, Iowa; Ethel Mae and husband Cliff Hanshaw, of Bedford, Iowa; and Donald Glen and wife, Marilyn, of Branson, Mo.; grandchildren, Larry Newkirk and wife, Linda, of Council Bluffs, Ia.; Dennis Newkirk of Dallas, Texas; Debra Newkirk of Memphis, Tenn.; Diane Lubka of Branson, Mo.; John Shehan and wife, Barbara, of Albany, Mo.; Steve Shehan and wife, Helen, of Albany, Mo.; Patricia Shehan and husband, John Ryan, of Austin, Texas; David and Joyce Shehan of Bedford, Ia.; five great grandchildren, Stephanie, Derrick, Quentin, Robbie and Jennifer Shehan; two sisters-in-law, Cora Thompson; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Flossie was a considerate and patient person.  She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Last Rites Were Held May 18 for Robert Mullen, 59

Funeral services for Robert Glenn Mullen, 59, of Bedford, held May 18 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings.  Mr. Mullen died May 15, 1980, in his Bedford home.  Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, Taylor County

Robert Glenn Mullen, son of Alexander Mullen and Clara Duff Goltry Mullen, was born December 13, 1920 west of Bedford, Iowa.

He grew to maturity in the community west of Bedford where he attended the rural school and was graduated from Bedford High School.

On March 7, 1940 he was united in marriage to Ellen Jean Thompson at Maryville, Missouri, and they engaged in farming until they moved to Bedford in 1967 where they have since resided.

Six children were born to bless their home and to share their love:  Gerald, Larry, Dianna, Linda, Denny, and Kelly.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Merton Eugene Mullen and Dean Edwin Mullen.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ellen Jean of the home; children, Gerald Dean Mullen and his wife, Linda, of Boonville, Iowa; Larry Glenn Mullen and his wife, Susie, of Bedford; Dianna Lynn Davidson and her husband, Alan, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Linda Kay McLearen and her husband, Roger, of Minnetonka, Minnesota; Denny Lee Mullen and his wife, Diane, of St. Joseph, Missouri; Kelly Scott Mullen of the home; seven grandchildren: Teri Lynn Mullen, Randy Dean Mullen, Robert Todd Mullen, Erik A.
