Obituary

Mrs. Frances Garard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. [erriman] I. [ra] Proctor, was born in Blockton Aug. 1, 1881, and died at her home Saturday morning, Nov. 26, 1927, at 11:20, aged 46 years, 3 months and 25 days.

Mrs. Garard lived with her parents until the time of her marriage to Joseph Garard Sept. 4, 1907. After their marriage they made their home in Ringgold County until the death of her husband. Some time later, with her children, she moved to Blockton where she made her home until the time of her death.

Mrs. Garard is survived by her two children, Madge and Teale; her mother, Mrs. M. [erriman] I. [ra] Proctor; three brothers, Joseph, Earl and Harry, and her sister, Mrs. Essie Woodhull, all of Blockton.

Mrs. Garard was preceded in death by her husband who died Dec. 13, 1915; her daughter, Vera, who departed this life Dec. 17, 1912, and her father who passed away Feb. 21, 1921.

She was a true and loyal wife and mother, loving her family as only a mother can love. After the death of her husband she devoted her time to the bringing up of her children. She often made the statement while living that her one great desire was to live long enough to rear and educate her children. She had been ill for many years. During the war when the influenza was so prevalent she became ill and has never been strong since.

She obeyed her Savior when still in her girlhood, and became a member of the Baptist church at Maloy. Since the hour of her confession of Him as her Savior she has been a devoted worker in the kingdom of God. Upon moving to Blockton she became a member of the Christian church.

Because of her long residence in this community, and because of her loving nature, she made a host of friends who mourn her passing and extend their sympathy to her family.

Funeral services were held at the Blockton Christian church Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck, and interment was made in Platte River Cemetery near Maloy.

Obituary

Lester Joseph Melton, son of Wilford and Sarah Melton, was born near Red Oak, Iowa, January 22, 1899, and passed away at the home of his parents in Blockton Sunday, May 30, 1920, aged 21 years, 4 months and 8 days.

A large part of his life was spent in Blockton and the last four [words unreadable] home and bed for more than a year and a half, but through this long illness Lester was very patient and hopeful, always looking for a better day tomorrow.

He leaves beside his parents four brothers---Frank, of St. Joseph, Mo.; Clark, of Oakland, California; Harry, of Walsenburg, Colorado, and Albert, of Blockton, Iowa, and other relatives and a host of friends.

Although a great sufferer Lester was a student of the bible. He diligently sought and found peace with God, and set his house in order. He was baptised and received into the Methodist Episcopal church March, 1920, and since that time he was satisfied and ready to go when the call came. A day or two before his departure he told his pastor that he was ready; all was well. He asked his parents not to worry about him and told them all had been done that could be done for his recovery. Lester was a bright boy and will be greatly missed by his bereaved parents and friends. Lester, we believe, went out from the house of sorrow and suffering unto the house not built with hands. He is not for God called him home.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church by Rev. J. W. Harwood Monday afternoon at 2:30 and interment was [made in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.] [words unreadable] Johnson, Cecil Judy, Wm. Wildman, Jr., Cecil Brown, Arthur Patrick and Dale West were the pall bearers.

Blockton News

Thursday     April 5, 1928    [p. 1]

Joseph Claude Proctor was born in Blockton July 13, 1879, and departed this life in the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., Friday morning, March 30, 1928, aged 48 years, 8 months and 17 days.

Mr. Proctor was united in marriage to Miss Sadie Sconce of Maloy December 11, 1907. To this union were born two children, Harold and Doris. They made their first home on the Stephenson farm northeast of Maloy. Then they moved to the Proctor home farm northeast of Blockton where they have made their permanent home.

Mr. Proctor is survived by his wife and children, two brothers, Earl and Harry, and one sister, Mrs. Essie Woodhull. He was preceded in death by his father, who died Feb. 21, 1921; his mother, who died but a few months ago, Dec. 21, 1927, and his sister, Mrs. Frances Garard, who died less than a month before her mother, Nov. 26, 1927.

While a young man Mr. Proctor obeyed his Lord and was buried with him in baptism. From that day until his death he has been faithful to his God and Savior. He has been an ardent and loyal worker in the Christian church, and has served as elder for the last ten years.

He was a very loving father, and a dear friend. His one great passion in life was to make a home for his loved ones, and to be helpful to others. His neighbors say he could always be depended on to be kind and helpful and true.

Mr. Proctor has suffered nearly all his life with a weak heart, and finally had to give up the fight after a heroic struggle of nearly a month in the Missouri Methodist hospital.

He will be missed by his loved ones more than tongues can tell. The church he has served so long and faithfully sorrows deeply at his going, but rejoices over his great and lasting faith.

Funeral services were held at the Blockton Christian church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck, and interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Blockton News (Blockton, Iowa), Thursday, May 4, 1922
Charles W. [alter], the son of Charles W. and Mary Jane Showalter, was born in Ringgold county June 15, 1871. The father died when Charles was about 16. Soon after the death of his father Mr. Showalter united with the Church of Christ at Delphos.
He was united in marriage with Clara B. Defenbaugh Oct. 14, 1894. To this union was born one son, Charles.
During the first few months following the marriage the home was in Missouri, but the family soon returned to Iowa so that Mr. Showalter spent practically all his life in Ringgold county and in this community.
He placed his membership in the Church of Christ at Blockton during the meeting held by Brother W. S. Johnson. He was a member of the church board, acting as deacon for about eight years and no man met the qualifications of this office as set forth in Scripture better than he. "Grave, not double-tongued, not greedy of filthy lucre, holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience, ruling well his own household. For he that hath served well as deacon gains to himself a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus."
Brother Showalter loved the Bible and read it and marked his favorite passages, some of which were read as the scripture lesson today. He loved also the church and her services and was especially fond of the Bible school, being faithful in the attendance at all the services.
His membership and office in the church was not a merely nominal [words unreadable] bore witness of his faith.
He was stricken with smallpox on Feb. 18th and his death occurred on the 27th of the same month, at the age of 50 years, 8 months and 12 days. During his sickness he expressed his willingness and readiness to yield to the will of his heavenly Father.
The deceased is survived and mourned by his wife, the son, Charles, and wife; granddaughter, Laveta May; one brother, John, of Mt. Ayr; three sisters, Mrs. Avis Heath of Hastings, Nebr.; Mrs. Pearl Michael, of DeSota, Ia., and Mrs. Lena Humphrey of Chicago, and by the many friends of the community.
Farewell, dear father, sweet thy
     rest,
Weary with years and worn with
     pain;
Farewell till in some happy place
We shall behold thy face again.
'Tis ours to miss thee, all our years,
      And tender memories of thee
   keep,
Thine in the Lord to rest, for so,
   He giveth His beloved sleep.
Memorial services were held for Mr. Showalter at the Christian church, Sunday, April 23, at 2 p. m. conducted by E. E. Stringfellow.
