[LACY, EDNA FESTINE WOLVERTON]

Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, February 18, 1998

Edna Festine Wolverton Lacy

Edna Festine Wolverton Lacy born on December 7, 1905 in Bedford Iowa was one of three children of Howard and Mabel Spencer Wolverton. Edna was born and raised on a farm. She spent her life working in banking in Topeka and Texas, and then in the Treasurer's Office here in Taylor County. Some of my favorite stories are from her time in Texas.

The most important thing in life for Edna was her family. She moved back to Bedford to care for her ailing parents.

Her daughter Lois was her pride and joy, as well as her grandchildren, Roberto, Betsy, Cristina, and Dianna and their children. She always looked forward with anticipation to the Sunday phone calls with Lois, though she wished she could actually be with her.

In   her   younger   days   she visited Lois' family in Mexico often and she spoke of those visits with great joy of all the things she experienced, but more importantly the fond memories of spending time with her grandchildren. This American grandmother with blonde hair, blue eyes arid dimples was the pride of her grandchildren. She was a spoiler. She was quiet and generous, she treated them with love and care and patience.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Mabel Spencer Wolverton and sister Violet Morgan.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter Lois and husband Roberto. Her grandchildren, Roberto, his wife Fana and their children Roberto and Fana; Betsy Parra and her husband Forge, and their children Forge, Miguel, Gonzalo, Cristina, Guilerrmo and Alejandra; Cristina Hohn and her husband Dennis and their children, Monika, Emilie and Jessica; Dianna Berron and her husband Reuben and their children, Pablo, Andres, and Alejandro. She will also be missed by her brother, Paul Wolverton and his wife Doris, their daughter Dianne Baker and family, and sister Lucille Wetmore and her husband Bud

Edna was a beautiful woman both inside and out. Her heart was filled with gold, always caring for someone else, always asking how someone else was doing, before she would allow you to ask about her. Edna loved her yard and garden, the yard was like walking into the forest with trees and plants sheltering you from the street.    You could see squirrels and birds of all types finding habitation in her personal forest. People would come from miles around to see that beautiful magnolia tree in bloom. Edna was a member of the Fort Nightly Club, a 50-year member of Eastern Star, and a member and elder of the United Christian Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed golfing as long as she was able. Let us be thankful for Edna's life was a gift, she lived with quiet dignity, grace and love, and touched our lives and helped all of us to share love with others.

Edna entered into rest on Friday, January 23, 1998 at the Bedford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were provided by Novinger Taylor Funeral Home on Monday, January 26, 1998. She was buried at Fairview Cemetery.

[MORRIS, LOWELL CLAY "SID"]

Bedford Times-Press, Thursday December 10, 1953, [p. 1]

L. C. "Sid" Morris Dies At Home Here

Lowell Clay Morris, only son of Willis G. [rant] Morris and Elizabeth Myers Morris was born in Sidney, Iowa, Sept. 3, 1895. He died at his home in Bedford, Iowa, Dec. 4, 1953, at the age of 58 years, three months, one day. His parents preceded him in death.

At the age of eight in 1903, he moved from Sidney, and had been a resident of Bedford since.

He was married to Artie Grace Bock of Bedford on Nov. 6, 1920 and to them were born three sons: Lowell C. Morris, jr., of Smithville, Mo., Benjamin Bock Morris of Kirkwood, Mo., Robert Dale Morris of Osceola, Iowa.

Besides his wife and sons, he leaves five grandchildren, Lowell C. Morris, III, and Patricia Parker Morris of Smithville, Michael Benjamin Morris and William Ralph Morris of Kirkwood, Marcia Lee Morris of Osceola.

He was a veteran of World War I, losing a leg in an accident while in training in the Norfolk Navy yard. Following his discharge he attended school in Kansas City, returning to Bedford on completion of the course to enter politics, being elected county recorder, serving from January 1919 through July 1922, when he resigned to enter business.

After serving as a county official, he entered the grocery business here, selling out a few years ago after 25 years of successful operation. After retiring from the grocery and market business, Mr. Morris greatly improved both floors of his business block on east Main Street here. He entered the insurance field and developed a good business in car and property insurance, accident and health and life insurance.

He was active in civic affairs, serving many years as a member of the local school board. Sports were his hobby and he devoted much time to promoting athletic events, both for youth and adults. For a number of years he had written a sports column for this newspaper, the Bedford Times-Press, and had reported games for the local newspaper and for papers at St. Joseph, Mo., Omaha, Nebr., Council Bluffs and Des Moines, giving full coverage on all sports events in Bedford and in the Waubonsie League of which most of the other schools in Taylor County were members.

Sid had been in ill health for the past year or more, a nervous condition about which he worried much more than his outward appearance indicated. His condition finally overwhelmed him---it was more than he could fight.

Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church here Monday at 2 o'clock by Rev. Clement Loehr. The American Legion had charge of the graveside services in the Fairview cemetery.

[STEEN, GERALD FRANKLIN]

Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, September 20, 1989, p. 6

GERALD FRANKLIN STEEN

Services for Gerald Franklin Steen, 81, Bedford, were held September 17 at Shum-Novinger funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Ted DeHass officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa. Mr. Steen died September 14, 1989.

Gerald Franklin Steen, son of John and Stella Franklin Steen, was born near Platteville, Iowa, on September 3, 1908. He grew to manhood in Taylor County, where he was educated in the public schools; on June 8, 1935 he was married to Hildred Arleen Houck, daughter of Eli and Mary Houck. To this union one son, Richard Franklin Steen, was born on January 29, 1943. Richard died October 31, 1948.

Gerald is survived by his wife Hildred, of the home and a sister, Lois Brice of Omaha, Neb.; nieces and nephews and many friends.

Gerald and Hildred lived on the same farm in Gay Township for 48 years, during which time he was always active in rural affairs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford and was a charter member of the Taylor County Sheriff's Posse.

He had a lifelong interest in horses; and though he had a severe hearing handicap in later years, he is remembered as a good neighbor with a ready smile. Gerald probably would have preferred to be remembered as a faithful steward of the land; his interest in conservation of the soil and care of it were a genuine commitment.

[STEEN, HILDRED ARLEEN HOUCK]

Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, February 2, 1994

HILDRED STEEN

Hildred Arleen Houck, daughter of Eli and Mary Hardin Houck, was born in Adams County, Iowa on June 9,1909, and passed away at Clearfield, Iowa on January 30, 1994.

Her parents moved to Taylor County while she was in country school, and she graduated from Bedford High School in 1927, after which she taught in the rural schools of Adams and Taylor Counties until her marriage.

She and Gerald Franklin Steen were married on the 8th day of June 1935, and had the pleasure of celebrating their 50th anniversary in their home in Bedford as hosts to their family and friends. She and Gerald were the parents of one son, Richard, who was born in 1943 and died in 1948.

The loss of this only child did not signify the end of children being at home in the Steen household; through the years at various times, Gerald and Hildred welcomed several nieces and nephews of two generations and knew the joy of the children in their home.

Hildred professed her faith in Jesus as her personal Saviour at the age of 15 and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Bedford, Iowa on January 18, 1925, and has remained a member since that time, being particularly active in the women's work.

Hildred was preceded in death by her husband, her son, her parents, and one nephew, Kirk Herbert.

She leaves to mourn her passing her sister, Verlee Moore of Anchorage, Alaska; her sister, Virginia Herbert and brother-in-law George Herbert of Mount Vernon, Mo.; and their family: Jill Jeffords, John, Don, Paul, Mike and Mary Jean Herbert and their spouses, children and grandchildren.

Hildred has been variously described by friends as a historical treasure and a community institution, and truly she was both. In an age when many tend to think the day of the pioneer has passed, she is still thought of as a pioneer in several aspects. She saw and lived a real revolution in farming and rural life; and her interests were many and varied. Her knowledge was vast in several areas. She was an Iris fancier, knew and studied antiques, flowers, dolls, and local history. She had planned and led Farm Bureau travels in which many participated. She served on many election boards, worked at the Taylor County Fair and in the Bedford Saddle Club, was active in the American Cancer Society, Bible study group, politics, writing for local history books, was a member of the Second Childhood Doll Club, the 20th Century Club, ONO Club, and the Platteville Cemetery Restoration Committee. Hildred had taught the Platteville School just prior to her marriage, and always claimed Platteville and its residents as special to her. She was particularly fond of relating the number of pupils at Platteville who were members of the Armed Forces in World War II, then would end with a smile, "and they all came back".

Services were Tuesday, Feb. 1. 10:30 a.m. at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home conducted by Pastor Lester Johnson of the First Baptist Church.

[evi] Bert, of Marshall, Mo.; Margaret Elizabeth Moor[e] of Bedford; Jennie Ella Hicks, who preceded him in death six years ago; Leland Edward, who died in infancy.

Mr. Tracy came to Bedford about twenty-five years ago and here made his home until death claimed him last Saturday, after weeks of illness and patient suffering.

He was a blacksmith, having started to learn the trade when he was thirteen years of age.

He has belonged to the I.O. O. F. lodge for forty years.

He was a follower of the Christ, choosing the fellowship of the Methodist Episcopal church in Pickering, Mo., and upon coming to Bedford he transferred his membership to the Bedford Methodist Episcopal church.
