Verl Baker former resident

Funeral services for Verl W. Baker, 71, of Ft. Collins, Co, formerly of this area will be at 2 pm Monday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.

Mr. Baker died Wednesday at his home in Ft. Collins.

He was born Feb. 14, 1911, in Worth County, Mo, the son of George and Angie Waugh Baker.

He was married to Vivian Jones who survives.

Additional survivors include three children: Sherri Brown of Ft. Collins, Co; Donella Kissell of Cheyenne, Wy; and Leo Baker of Estes Park, Co. There are 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sisters are Leola Jones of Grant City, Mo; Geraldine Hamblin of Ft. Collins and Vondean King of Greeley, Co. Lawrence Baker of Willamina, Or, is a brother.

Burial will be in the Conway cemetery.

VERL WINFORD BAKER

Verl Winford Baker was born Feb. 14, 1911 in Worth County, Mo, and died March 9, 1983 at his home in Ft. Collins, Co, at the age of 72 years.

Memorial service for Mr. Baker was held March 11 at the Russell Funeral Chapel in Ft. Collins. Concluding services were conducted from the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda, March 14, and burial was in the Conway, Ia. cemetery.

On Oct. 12, 1929, Mr. Baker was married to Vivian V. [ondean] Jones at Mt. Ayr, Iowa. The couple moved from Iowa to Ft. Collins 33 years ago and farmed until 1967, when he established Baker and Hamblin Construction Co. He also helped found the East Larimer County (ELCO) Water District and the Boulder Sanitation District. He retired from the ELCO Water Board in 1982. Mr. Baker was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian of Fort Collins; two daughters, Sherri Brown of Fort Collins and Donella Kissell of Cheyenne, Wy; a son, Leo Baker of Estes Park, Co; three sisters, Leola Jones of Grant City, Mo; Geraldine Hamblin of Fort Collins and, Vondean King of Greeley, Co; one brother, Lawrence Baker of Willamina, Or. Mr. Baker is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Lucile Blake

Services were held September 11, 1986 for Lucile Blake, 77, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings and Rev. Willis Grant. Burial was at Conway Cemetery, Conway, Iowa. Miss Blake died September 8, 1986 at Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Iowa.

Dorothy Lucile Blake, daughter of Perley A. [rthur] Blake and Hollie G. Powell Blake was born in Bedford, Taylor County Iowa March 4, 1909. She grew to maturity in Bedford where she attended the public school and was graduated from Bedford High School in the class of 1929. When she was 12 years old she united with the  Bedford United Methodist Church and has been a faithful and loyal member  being active in the United Methodist Women; she was publicity chairperson and mailed "get well" and "birthday cards" for them. She was also a member of the Triangle Club. She was a life Member of the Taylor County Historical Society.

Her parents owned and operated the Blake Music Store and Lucile helped in the store from 1933 until it was sold in 1959.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother died March 30, 1933 and her father died February 28, 1959.

Her only relatives are first and second cousins, some residing in the United States and some residing in Canada.

Lucile was a kind and considerate person; a loving daughter and friend to many. She will be missed by those who knew her.

CITY'S OLDEST BUSINESS MAN DIED FEB. 28

Perley A. [rthur] Blake, son of Rosella [Norman] and Arthur [Oliver Perry] Blake, was born at Albia, Iowa on November 20, 1874 and died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital on February 28, 1959 at the age of 84 years, three months and eight days.

When a child, he moved with his parents to a farm between Conway and Sharpsburg. His father died when Mr. Blake was only a lad, leaving him, his brothers, and his widowed mother to earn a livelihood on the farm during days when times were hard.

On March 20, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Hollie G. Powell. They made their home in Fort Collins, Colo., in Clovis, New Mexico and in Oklahoma. In 1910 he returned to Bedford, Iowa where he opened a music store, which he operated until his recent illness.

Mr. Blake was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Bedford Methodist Church and a member of its Official Board in the capacity of Honorary Steward.

He leaves to mourn his passing one daughter, Miss [Dorothy] Lucile Blake of Bedford, Iowa; two half-sisters, Mrs. C. O. Templin of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Mrs. George Gregg of Topeka, Kansas; two brothers-in-law, Clint Powell of Creston, Iowa and Cliff Powell of McAllen, Texas; several nieces and one nephew; and a host of friends.

His wife, Mrs. Hollie Blake preceded him in death on March 30, 1933. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Clarence and Vertal Blake.

Mr. Blake was an energetic person who worked hard. He was of a cheerful disposition and thus through his life and through the kind of business in which he was engaged, he spread the sounds of happy music wherever he went. He was always kind and considerate of his family and of all who had associations with him.

Obituary - C. P. Lowary

Chas. Phefer [Fifer] Lowary, son of James and Emma Roberts Lowary, was born March 29, 1878, in Ohio and died in Bedford, August 31, 1949 at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 2 days.

He spent his entire life in Taylor County. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Flo Johnston of Clarinda, Mrs. Pearl Litteer of Lenox and Mrs. Mina Ginn of Mahaska, Kansas; one brother, Garfield Lowary of Denver, Colo.

His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. The funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home Sept. 3 at 10 o'clock a.m. conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye. Burial was in the Conway cemetery.

Fay Lowary was born at Coshocton, Ohio, March 23, 1884, and died at the home of her sister, Mrs. C. [hauncy] C. [leveland] Litteer near Conway, Iowa, on Nov. 1, 1924, aged 40 years, 7 months and 8 days.

She moved with her parents to Taylor county, Iowa, in October 1890, where she resided until the time of her death.

She is survived by her father, James Lowary of Conway, Iowa, three sisters, Mrs. Chas. Ginn of Mahaska, Kansas, Mrs. C. [hauncy] C. [leveland] Litteer of Conway, Iowa, Mrs. Claud Johnson of Casper, Wyoming, and four brothers, A.[quilla] M. [artin] Lowary of Coshocton, Ohio, Charles and Lyman of Conway, Iowa; [Henry] Garfield of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her mother in 1908 and also by two sisters.

James Lowary

James Lowary was born in Coshocton, Ohio, Oct. 23, 1842, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. [hauncy] C. [leveland] Litteer, April 2, 1928, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 9 days. He served in the Civil War as a private in Company G, 143rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry. Upon his return from the war he was united in marriage to Emma Roberts. To this union ten children were born. They moved to Iowa, near Conway, Oct. 23, 1890, where he resided until the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his death, 4 sons and 3 daughters. His wife and three daughters preceded him in death. Those surviving him are Aquilla of Coshocton, Ohio; Mina Ginn of Mahaska, Kans.; Pearl Litter [Litteer], Lyman, and Charles, of Conway, Ia.; Garfield of Denver, Colo.; Flo Johnston of Boulder, Colo. Besides these, he leaves 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and a host of friends and relatives to mourn his demise.

YVONNE ROBINSON

Yvonne Robinson, age 81, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Monday evening, February 23, 2004, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Graveside services were held 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2004 at Platteville Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa with Rev. Richard Iske officiating. A memorial has been established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Yvonne E. [lizabeth] (Blane) Robinson was born November 17, 1922, in Taylor County, Iowa, to Forest Richard Blane and Hazel Lois (Morgan) Blane. Yvonne was a Blockton High School graduate and had two years of college. She taught in a country school for quite a few years. Yvonne was married to Ward E. [dward] Poore and later married Vic Robinson and both preceded her in death She lived on a farm and worked hard at her garden and has always loved her dogs and chickens.     Yvonne enjoyed the outdoors and helping others in need. She had been a cook at the American Legion and other restaurants, a ward nurse at MHI and janitor at Lisle Corporation before retiring in 1981. Yvonne was a member of the Free Methodist Church. Her greatest enjoyment was her family.

Preceding Yvonne in death were her parents; husbands; son, Steven in infancy. Survivors include her children: James Poore and his wife Carol of Illinois, Dora Kae Prather and her husband Paul of Clarinda, Iowa, Sara Robinson and her husband Don of Clarinda, Iowa, Dave Poore of Bedford, Iowa, Richard Poore and his wife Sherry of Elgin, Illinois, Roger Poore and his wife Deb of Clarinda, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Barbara Tadlock and her husband Max of Sacramento, California; sister, Elnora Peters and her husband Garvin of Temecula, California.

David Sanders, for many years a resident of the community east of Bedford, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Theodore Rounds, south of Conway, at 3:30 o’clock this morning. He had been in ill health for several months.

Services Are Held For David Sanders

Funeral services for David Sanders, 64, who died at the home of his daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Rounds near Conway, Thursday, Nov. 23, were held at the Platteville church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Roy C. Longfellow of Churdan, Iowa. Burial was in the Platteville cemetery.

Mr. Sanders was born Oct. 16, 1869, near Paola, Kans. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Missouri, locating on a farm near Grant City. When a young man about eighteen years old he went to Platteville and started working for Dr. J. P. Standley. After his marriage Nov. 1, 1893, to Ida May Wineinger, they moved to a farm in the Platteville vicinity, where he spent the remainder of his life with the exception of the past nine months, which he spent with his two children, John [Philip] Sanders and Mrs. Rounds. Two other children, Vernie and Jessie died in infancy.

Surviving are the wife, two children, five grandchildren, all of the vicinity of Bedford; his aged mother, Mrs. Margret Sanders of Grant City; five brothers, Fred, Albert, Elmer, and Willis of Grant City and Robert of La Cygne, Kans; four sisters, Etta of Grant City, Elva of Columbia, Mo., Della of Quenemo, Kans., and Bertha of Wheatland, Wyo.

John Sanders Dies Monday In Calif.

Word was received here of the death of John [Philip] Sanders of Livermore, California. Mr. Sanders died Monday in a hospital there. The home address is: 6039 S. Front Rd., Livermore, Calif. 94550.

[Sanders, Mima Deloris Matheny]

Mima Deloris (Matheny) Sanders was one of six children born to Paul C.[ollins] Matheny and [Fernata] Margaret Tamerius Matheny on October 11, 1925 in Blockton, Iowa.

She grew up attending country school in Platteville.

On August 21, 1944 she was united in marriage to William L. Sanders in Bedford; to this union seven children were born. Deloris enjoyed cooking, cleaning, reading, camping, traveling and country music.

Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to her. Deloris is survived by four sons, Richard Sanders and Julia of Graham Missouri; Marvin Sanders and Linda of Moody, Missouri; Wayland Sanders of Quitman, Missouri, and Galen Sanders and Shirley of Bedford, Iowa; three daughters, Marilyn Scholtz and Ron of St. Joseph, Missouri; Linda Scott and Lyle of Shenandoah, Iowa; and Rita Richard and Steve of Denison, Texas; thirty-two grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren three brothers, Paul Matheny and Bernice of Bedford, Iowa; Delbert Matheny and Linda of Lenox, Iowa and Ronald Matheny of Pottsboro, Texas and two sisters, Mardell Straight of Albany, Missouri and Isabelle Link of La Mirada, California.

Preceding Deloris in death are her parents Paul and Margaret Matheny and husband William Sanders. Deloris will be sadly missed be all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services for Deloris Sanders, age 77 of Denison, Texas, formerly of Bedford, who died December 31, 2002, were held Saturday, January 4, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral home with Pastor Ted DeHass officiating. Interment was held in the Platteville Cemetery in Platteville. Memorials can be given in her name.

Forest Murray, 82 Final Rites Held November 19

Funeral services for Forest Ellsworth Murray, 82, were held November 19 in Shum- Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Mr. Murray died November 17, 1982 at Colonial Manor in Corning, Iowa. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery, Platteville, Iowa.

Forest Ellsworth Murray, son of Leslie George Murray and Grace Johnson Murray was born at Blockton, Iowa June 4, 1900.

He had lived in the Afton, Redding and Blockton area prior to his coming to Bedford several years ago where he has continued to reside until ill health caused him to enter the nursing home where he died.

He had worked at various occupations and places during his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his parents and the other members of his family.

A niece and several cousins and other relatives survive.

He will be remembered by all those who knew him as one who made friends readily and they will miss his friendship.

Funeral services for Milo Vernon Murray, 62, of Mount Ayr, were held at Dunfee Funeral Home at Mount Ayr May 6. Mr. Murray died May 4, 1970 in Mt. Ayr. Interment was at Platteville   Cemetery.

Milo Vernon Murray, son of   Leslie  [George] and   Grace   [Johnson] Murray, was born July 22, 1907.

He was employed by the Great Western Railroad Co. of Chicago until his retirement six years ago.

He is survived by a brother, Forrest Murray of Bedford; a niece, Dorothy Fish of Maryville, Mo.; other relatives   and   friends. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

W. [illiam] D. [ouglas] Murray, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lay Kemery at Sheridan, Mo.

The funeral services were held at the Platteville church Thursday afternoon and burial was in the Platteville cemetery. Rev. Ted Masters of Sheridan officiated.

Mr. Murray is survived by one brother, Edgar Murray of Conway.

Guy Murren, 78 Last Rites Were Held in Blockton

Funeral services for Guy Murren, 78, of Blockton, were held November 20 in the Blockton Christian Church officiated by Pastor Mel Smith. Mr. Murren died November 17 in his Blockton home. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Guy Murren, son of Jack [John William] and Eve [Eva Eleanor Idleman] Murren was born in Blockton, Iowa on January 23, 1905.

His childhood was spent in Blockton where he grew to maturity and earned the respect of all those who knew him.

On November 18, 1929 he was united in marriage to Gertie Mae Hill and they remained in the Blockton community for most of their 24 years of marriage. To this union four sons were born.

He worked all his life at his chosen trades of brick masonry and farming. He took great pride in his accomplishments and he will be long remembered for the beauty and quality workmanship he exhibited.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Fern E. Murren, his sisters, Nola Welty and Gail Weiters, and two infant sons.

Remaining to cherish his memory are: Mr. and Mrs. Guy M. Murren, Tunas, Mo.; Anthony Murren, Marshalltown, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Todd M. Murren, St. Louis, Mo.; Miss Melody Murren, Springfield, Mo.; other relatives and many friends.

Guy was a respected elder of the community and he will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

—From Dr. Standley we learn of the drowning of Jacob Henry Noffsker, on his farm last Friday. He in company with some smaller boys were swimming in a lake on the Drs. farm. The young man attempted to swim across the lake, but became exhausted, when it was about one-half accomplished and went down. The other boys wont to his rescue immediately, but were unable to save him. His Grandmother was the only relative who reached Platteville in time to see him buried. Dr. Standley spoke in the highest terms of praise of the young man, who formerly carried on the goods business, at Redding, for Mr. Standley. He had had charge of Mr. Standley’s store at Platteville since July 2d.

—On last Friday a young man named Jacob H. [enry] Noffsker was drowned while bathing in Dr. J. R. Standley's fishpond at Mormontown. He attempted to swim across the pond, which is about one hundred yards in diameter, and when half way over his strength seemed to desert him and he sank to the bottom. A number of other young men were in the water with him but were unable to render him assistance in time to be of any avail. The deceased was about sixteen years of age and was clerking in Dr. Standley's store. He was from St. Joseph, Mo., where his widowed mother still resides.

Blockton Hotel Man Passed Away After Brief Illness

William Ostrander, proprietor of the   Blockton hotel, died at his home Monday evening at 8 o'clock. He had been sick only a few days and his death   was not expected by the greater number of the towns people till near the end. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Wednesday at 2:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Charles Patrick Dies In Des Moines

Mrs. Charles Patrick, a native of Taylor County, died at her home in Des Moines July 21. Funeral services were held at the Platteville church with Rev. Mr. Wilkins of Blockton officiating. Burial in Platteville cemetery.

Mable Elva Townsend, daughter of Edward C. [lark] and Nettie May [Matheny] Townsend, was born at Platteville, Iowa, August 16, 1906 and departed this life at the age of 53 years, 11 months, five days.

On March 8, 1924 she was united in marriage to Charles [Fairbanks] Patrick, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Dixie L., Lowell and Larry, all of Dallas, Texas; one daughter Pearle May of the home; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs Lola Risser of Bedford; a niece and nephew, other relatives and friends.

Services for James Poore age 67, of St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of the Bedford/Clarinda, Iowa area, who entered into peace Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri, were held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Platteville Cemetery, Platteville, Iowa. Visitation with the family were held 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, Bedford, Iowa. Burial with military rites by John F. Hardin Post #165 will be in the Platteville Cemetery, Platteville, Iowa. Memorials may be given in Jim’s name. James Edward Poore was born September 2, 1943, in Taylor County, Iowa to Ward Edward Poore and Yvonne Elizabeth (Blane) Poore. Jim and his six siblings grew up on a farm eight miles east of Bedford in the Platteville area. He was a graduate of Bedford High School. Jim joined the Untied States Army when he was seventeen, spending some of his tour in Germany.

Jim worked on a dairy farm in the Lamoni area before moving to Clarinda where he worked on the Clarinda Police Force for a number of years. In the early 1970’s, he moved to Des Moines working as a manager for Clark Oil. He returned to Southwest Iowa for a time before moving to Illinois working as a district manager overseeing numerous gas stations. Jim also owned a pawnshop and currently was living in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Jim was a man of faith; he was active in his church in Nevada. He had a great sense of humor and liked to play jokes on people. He loved his animals and had a soft spot for his dogs, Joker and Molly. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time on his acreage enjoying nature.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents and brother, Stephen [Ward] Poore.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol Poore of St. Joseph, Missouri; sons, Jon Poore and wife Linda of Clarinda, Iowa and Jeff Poore of Arkansas; grandchildren, Brett, Blake, Lindsey, Brianna, and Jacob; siblings, Dora Prather and husband Paul of Clarinda, Iowa, David Poore and wife Diane of Bedford, Iowa, Roger Poore and wife Debbie of Clarinda, Iowa Richard Poore and wife Sherry of Arizona, Sara Robinson and husband Don of Clarinda, Iowa; nieces; nephews and many friends.

Jim will be greatly missed but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. May God grant comfort to those who mourn his passing.

Poor Infant Dies At Birth

Stephen Ward Poore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward E. [dward] Poore [Yvonne Elizabeth Blane], was stillborn, Saturday, September 4, 1948 at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville. Surviving are his parents, a brother, James Edward, age 5; a sister, Dora Kay age 2; his grandparents, Charles E. [dward] Poore, Minnie E. Poore, and Hazel L. Blane of Bedford; and his great grandmother, Myra Blane of Bedford.

Graveside services were held at the Platteville cemetery at 10 o’clock Monday morning, conducted by Rev. Gordon F. MacLean.
