Evelyn Sickles Meek
Funeral
services for Evelyn Sickles Meek,
age 75 of Blockton, who died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 were held Saturday, Sept.
9, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bedford with Pastor
Ruth Melick officiating. Interment was held in the Athelstan Cemetery.
Memorials can be given in her name. Services were conducted by the Ritchie
Funeral Home of Bedford.
Evelyn
Marie Sickels Meek was born June
1, 1925 in Worth County, Missouri, the daughter of Frederick Aaron Bownes and Susie Christine Lantz Bownes. At the age of eight her family moved to
Athelstan where she attended school, graduating from high school at the age of
fifteen. Evelyn then worked
for Cudahy's Packing Plant for one [year?] prior to attending teacher's
college. She taught country school for two years. On May 17, 1944, she was
united in marriage to Lyle W. Sickels in Bedford. Evelyn stayed at home raising her family until Rosalyn entered kindergarten. She returned to teaching
where she eventually earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education
in 1964; her Master of Arts - Reading Specialist K-12; Consultant, College
Level in 1972 at Northwest Missouri State University. Evelyn was an educator, specializing in elementary
reading, for thirty-nine years. She taught in Athelstan, Blockton, Conway and
Bedford communities, retiring in 1992. Evelyn was a strong believer in the power of education
and was extremely proud of her four grandchildren who have chosen careers in
elementary education and a granddaughter who is a Child Care Provider.
In
1984, Lyle passed away, and on
January 18, 1997, she was united in marriage to Bud Meek in Bedford. The couple lived in Blockton. Evelyn was a member of the Bedford United Methodist
Church for almost 40 years having been involved as a Sunday School Teacher and
Superintendent, active in Bible School and many church circles and activities. Evelyn was an active community member involved as
President and Vice President of Delta Kappa Gamma; P.E.O.; Order of Eastern
Star, where she was Warden and Past Offices of Marshall, Chaplain, Warden Ruth,
Martha; Pat Marshall and Warden of Rebekahs; Secretary, President, Treasurer
and District Committee of the B.P.W.; member of the Bedford Lioness; on the
Audit Committee of the American Legion Auxiliary; past President of the Evening
Circle and Church Women United; the Inter-Church Council; the JT Club-Crafts;
Secretary of the 19th Century Club; a volunteer at the Historical Society;
delivered Meals on Wheels and in 1975 was awarded the "Woman of the
Year" award by the local Business and Professional Women's Club.
Always
one to continue with the educational beliefs, Evelyn was involved as past President, Secretary and
Treasurer of the Bedford Community Education Association; the International
Reading Association for Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa during the regional meetings;
was a substitute teacher for many years as well as a home tutor; was past
President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer for the PTA; was Director
and Teacher for the Summer School Program for reading and math; Co-author of
the MAGIC Program (Meaningful Activities for Growth in Comprehension) to which
a state grant was given; in 1976, she was listed in "Who's Who of
Educators" as an "Early Childhood Educator"; and was selected by
Southwest Iowa Reading Association to represent the Association as Iowa Reading
Teacher of the Year.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Bud of Blockton; two daughters, Rena Christine
Searl and husband Steve of Burnsville, Minnesota; Rosalyn Maxine
Cummings and Husband Dr. Jim
Cummings of Bedford, a
daughter-in-law, Pat Sickels Lessner of Omaha, Nebraska; a step-son Jim Meek and wife Heidi of Bedford; a sister, Maxine Carroll of Bedford; five grandchildren, Trisha
Sickels, Carla Christensen, Cristan Searl, Jeff Cummings and Stephen Searl; and two great-grandchildren, Alsiha and
Mathew.
Preceding Evelyn in death are her first
husband, Lyle, in 1984; a son, Roger Lyle Sickles [Sickels] in 1985; her parents, Frederick and Susie; and a brother Cleo Bownes.

Funeral
services for Frank Elmer Sickels,
79, of Athelstan, held March 23 at the Community Church in Athelstan, were
conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan. Mr. Sickels died in the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa March 21. 1974.
Interment was at the Athelstan Cemetery.

Elmer Sickels, son of Elmer
[Aden] and Mamie [Mary Jane Sloan] Sickels, was born at Blockton, Iowa, March 1, 1895. He lived near Athelstan
and went to the Works School.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mamie Sickels, three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Fluke of Blockton, Mrs. Elva Fidler, of Geneva, Nebr., and Mrs. Garland Stroburg of Salem, Mo.
Left
to cherish his memory are numerous nieces and nephews.
Frank was a kind and considerate man, and will be sadly
missed by all who knew and loved him.

Richard Sickels, son of James
[Samuel] and Mary [McClain] Sickels,
was born in Calhoun County, Michigan, Sept. 22d, 1849, and died at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. C. [harles] E. [dward] Martin of Sheridan July 1, 1929, at the age of 79 years,
9 months and 9 days.
He
came to Taylor County with his parents at the age of 8 years and, excepting a
few years spent in Kansas, he spent the remainder of his life in Taylor County.
On
Sept. 3, 1869, he was united in marriage to Ellen C. [aroline] Martin in Worth County, Missouri. To this union were
born ten children, nine of whom are still living—Mrs. [Sarah] Malinda
Murphin, of Parnell, Mo.; Mrs.
[Emma] Myrtle Martin, of
Sheridan; Mrs. [Ora] Belle Martin,
of Blockton; Orville [Francis] Sickels, of Caldwell, Idaho; Milton [Leroy] Sickels, of Athol, Kansas; Early [Ellwood] Sickels, deceased; Walter [Charles] Sickels, of Frost, Minnesota; Earnest [George] Sickels, of Buffalo Center; Mrs. Pearl [Mable] Humrick, of Des Moines; Watson [Everett] Sickels, of Litchville, North Dakota.
Besides
his children he leaves 28 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren, one brother Elmer
Sickels of Athelstan and other
relatives and friends who mourn his death. His wife preceded him in death Nov.
26, 1900.
Funeral services were
conducted at Athelstan Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. L. B. Day. A
quartet composed of Marion and W. M. Jenkins and R. A. Winemiller and wife with
Mrs. F. A Freeland pianist sang. The pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased
—Harry Murphin, Cyrus Wake, Blaine Walker, Jack Humrick, Dewey Fidler, and Frank Sickels. Interment was made in the Athelstan cemetery.

Glade
F. [letcher] Sickels, son of Glenn
Sickels and Zelda Georgia Freemyer Sickels, was born at home in Taylor County, Iowa on October 10, 1919 and
departed this life on January 14, 1994 in Conroe, Texas at the age of 74 years,
three months and four days.
He
lived near Athelstan, Iowa and attended the Athelstan school.
He
joined the Army Air Corp and served his country during World War II as an
Airplane Mechanic and flew 36 bombing missions over Europe. After the war, he
returned to Athelstan to farm, and would continue farming throughout his
lifetime.
On
January 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to Venita Ilene Carroll. They lived in and near Athelstan, Iowa. They had
three children: Dorcyle Kay, Rita Mae and Frances Ruth.
Venita died in 1978 and his father, Glenn in 1988.
On
August 31, 1991 Glade married Ardith
Anderson. They lived in
Clearfield, Iowa.

to cherish his memory are his wife, Ardith; his mother, Zelda;
, his brother, Gordon;
daughters, Dorcyle McClure, Rita Hamilton and Ruth Winkler,
grandchildren, Karlene and Glenda
Hamilton, Nathan and Joy Winkler;
great granddaughter, Halie Hamilton;
and many other relatives and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and
loved him.
Glade accepted Christ into his heart as a young man and
served the Lord actively as a member of the Hamilton Memorial Missionary Church
in many areas of leadership. A special verse to him was Romans 8:28: "And
we know that all things work together for good to those who are called
according to his purpose."

Helen
Elithe Sickels, daughter of Albert
J.[ames] and Anna McCann Rusco was born in Athelstan, Ia. November 21, 1913 and departed this life June 10,
1988 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Ia. at the age of 74.
She
lived in rural Maloy and grew to maturity in Athelstan where she attended the
public school and the Baptist Church.
On
February 28, 1934 she was united in marriage to Paul M. [anley] Sickels.
Their
children are Mrs. Dolores Tiner, Mrs. Mary Holmes, Mrs. Ruth Engelken and Mr. Richard Sickels.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and three brothers, Forrest,
Floyd, and Doyle Rusco.
Left
to cherish her memory are one sister, Freda Green; Mary Holmes, William and
Dolores Tiner, Ruth and Bob Engelken, Richard and Linda Sickels; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She
was a kind and considerate parent, sister and friend and will be missed by all
who knew and loved her.

Homer
West Sickels, son of James
[Samuel] and Mary [McClain] Sickels,
was born in Calhoun County, Michigan, March 23, 1854, and died at his home in
Athelstan, Feb. 6, 1929, aged 75 years, 10 months and 17 days.
He
was united in marriage to Susan Sleeth Nov. 14, 1875. To this union was born fifteen children, four of whom
died in infancy. Eleven grew to manhood and womanhood. One son, Frank, passed away Feb. 6, 1919. He leaves his wife and

of Kellerton; Guy of Wolf
Point, Montana; John, of Blockton; Challie and Glenn, of Athelstan; Gertie Rusco and Ina Wisdom, of Athelstan; Alice Gold, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; Clara Campbell, of Benton, and Margaret White of Savannah, Missouri. He also leaves to mourn
his departure two brothers, George,
of Parnell, Mo., and Elmer, of
Athelstan, besides 46 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and a host of
other relatives and friends.
Mr.
Sickels came to Taylor county
with his parents when seven years of age and has resided here ever since, with
the exception, of six years spent in Rooks county, Kansas. He was a true
husband, kind loving father, and an upright, honorable citizen all these years.
He has been very largely identified with the business affairs of the town and
community all his life, and he will be missed by that large host of people,
whose friendship and confidence he won through the years.
The
funeral services were conducted in the Athelstan Baptist church Feb. 9th by
Challie E. Graham, assisted by Wm. Hunt, after which the remains were laid to
rest in the Athelstan cemetery. The music was furnished by H.O. Mumma, Marion,
William and Calvin Jenkins. The hymns sung were "We Are Going Down the
Valley," "Nearer My God to Thee," and "The Old Bugged
Cross." The pallbearers were six grandsons—Rex Sickels, Cecil
Sickels, Lester Sickels, Paul Sickels, Emmett Rusco, and Donald Campbell.
A large host of friends
and neighbors congregated to pay the last tribute of respect to one they had
known so well, and all unite in extending their sympathy to the bereaved ones.
We trust they will look to Him, whose care is over all, and Whose loving heart
goes out to them; and, may they be led of Him to "The Tearless Land,"
where are no tears, sorrow, crying, pain, nor death, but all is love and light
and glory forever.

A number from here went
to Athelstan Saturday on train No. 1, which stopped for them, to attend the Homer
W. [est] Sickels funeral. The
services were largely attended and the funeral procession was made up wholly by
sleds, something that probably has not been seen in this section for almost a
third of a century.

Homer W. Sickels Dead
Homer W. [est] Sickels, who has been in poor health for several months, died at his home north of Athelstan early yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
Mr. Sickels was born in Calhoun county, Michigan, March 23, 1853, and died Feb. 6, 1929, aged 75 years, 10 months and 13 days.
He came to Taylor County with his parents, James Sickels and wife, when seven years of age or in 1860, settling near Platteville.
With the exception of six years spent in Rooks county, Kansas, where he took a claim and proved up on the same, he has been a resident of Taylor county sine 1860.
He was united in marriage to Miss Susan R. Sleeth in 1874. To this union eleven children were born—E. G., Guy, John, Frank, Challie and Glen Sickels, Mrs. C. E. Rusco, Mrs. John Gold, Mrs. O. T. Campbell and Mrs. L. H. White. One son, Frank, preceded him in death.

He
also leaves two sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, 11 grandchildren, one

All
of his life was spent in Jefferson Township. He united with the Baptist church
of Athelstan at an early age.

Services
for Lyle W. [ayne] Sickels were held December 22, 1984 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Carl
Cummings and Rev. E.M. Tabelisma officiating. Interment was at Athelstan
Cemetery, Athelstan, Ia. Mr. Sickels died December 19 at Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda where he had
been a patient for the past 12 years.
Lyle
W. [ayne] Sickels, son of John
[Elmer] and Grace [Helen] Fluke Sickels was born in Taylor County near Blockton, Iowa, June 10, 1923.
He
grew to maturity in the community where he was born where he attended the
public school and was graduated from Blockton High School in 1941.
On
May 17, 1944 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Bownes at the Methodist Parsonage in Bedford, Iowa. They
lived in Athelstan and Blockton before moving to Bedford in 1961.
Three
children were born to this union: Roger, Rena and Rosalyn.
He
was employed on the farm and for many years worked on road maintenance and
construction in Taylor County and for a time worked on road construction in
Honduras. He had worked also as an electrician and was manager of Union Gas
Company in Bedford, Iowa prior to illness that caused his retirement at the age
of 48 years.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Gene and Paul.

to cherish his memory are the children: Roger Lyle Sickels and his wife Patricia of Omaha, Ne.; Rena and her husband Steve Searl of Bloomington, Mn.; and Rosalyn and her husband Dr. James Cummings of Bedford, Iowa; two sisters, Helen Miller and her husband Mike of Cle Elum, Wa.; Lois Bauman and her husband William of St. Joseph, Mo., and a brother Joe Sickels and his wife Hilda of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren are Trisha

had been in ill health since a stroke in August 1961 but accepted his lot in
life and did the best he could on a day to day basis.
He will be sadly missed by his loved
ones and friends.

Susan
Rosaltha Sleeth was born near
Rosendale, Mo., Aug. 8, 1851, and departed this life at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Rusco,
Sept. 3,1932, at the age of 81 years and 25 days.
When
a young girl she removed with her parents to a farm near Athelstan where she
grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage to Homer West Sickels Nov. 14, 1874. To this union was born 15
children: Guy Sickels, of Wolf
Point, Montana; Alice Gold, of
Albert Lea, Minnesota; E. G. Sickels, of Kellerton; Margaret White, of Creston; Clara Campbell, of Benton; Gertrude Rusco, Ina Wisdom, John, Chall and Glenn, of Athelstan. Four children died in infancy, and Frank died 12 years ago. Her companion preceded her in
death four years ago. She also leaves one brother, John Sleeth, of Clarinda, and three sisters, Mrs. M. V.
Martin, of Athelstan; Mrs.
Rilla Severns, of Brookfield,
Mo., and Mrs. J. L. Denny, of
Maysville, Mo., besides many other relatives and a host of friends.
Mrs.
Sickels was a faithful wife, kind
loving mother, and a very highly respected citizen. A long and useful life in
the community had won for her many friends as was attested by the large
attendance at the funeral and the many beautiful floral tributes.
The funeral services were
held at the Athelstan Baptist church Monday, conducted by Challie E. Graham,
and the remains laid to rest besides those of her companion in the Athelstan
cemetery. The music was furnished by Marion Jenkins, Calvin Jenkins, Eldon Fling
and Gordon Griffith, with Mrs. F. A. Freeland at the piano The hymns sung were
"What a Friend We Have In Jesus," "Rock of Ages" and
"We Are Going Down the Valley." The pallbearers were Donald Campbell,
Lester Sickels, Cecil Sickels, Emmett Rusco, Paul Sickels and Rex Sickels. The
flower girls were Annis White, Avis White, Lois Sickels and Myrtle Marie
Sickels.

of Athelstan in Worth County Missouri on June 24, 1929. She attended the public
schools in both Worth County Missouri and Taylor County, Iowa.
On
January 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Glade Sickels at Bedford, Iowa and they lived in and near
Athelstan her entire married life.
To
this union three children were born: Dorcyle Kay, Rita Mae, and Frances Ruth.
She
was employed with O' Bryan Brothers in Bedford for six years, as well as s
homemaker and helped her husband farm.
She
was preceded in death by her mother in 1943, and her father in 1973.
Left
to cherish her memory are: husband, Glade; children, Dorcyle Kay and her husband, Don McClure,
of Beaumont, Texas; Rita Mae and her husband, Michael Hamilton,
of Omaha, Nebraska; and Frances Ruth of Des Moines, Iowa; one granddaughter, Karlene Rae Hamilton; brother, Ray Carter Carroll, Jr., and his wife, Marlene, of Sheridan, Missouri; many other relatives and
friends.
Venita accepted Christ as her personal Savior in the
early years of her married life and became a member of the Hamilton Memorial
Missionary Church where she remained a faithful worker.
She
was a mother who taught her children about the Lord and to truly believe in
Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them [that] are the called according to his purpose."
She was a kind and considerate wife, mother and friend and will be missed by
all who knew and loved her.

Erickson, Wells, Minn., and twins Roy Sickels, Albert Lea,
Minn., and Ray Sickels,

She
was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 6, 1967, and two sons, Virgil and Dale.

surviving relatives are 24 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, two
daughters-in-law, Hazel and

Star Mother and a member of American Legion Auxiliary, active in its work as
long as health permitted.
She was a kind wife and
mother, always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed until her health
failed her. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

services for Walter C. [harles] Sickels, 83, of Conway, held October 10 at the State Street Shum-Novinger

Funeral
services for Walter C. Sickels, 83, of Conway held October 10 at the State
Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here, were conducted by Rev. Ivo Randels. Mr.
Sickels died October 6, 1967 at
Rosary Hospital in Corning. Interment was at the Athelstan Cemetery.
Walter
C. [harles] Sickels, son of George
[Richard] and Ellen [Caroline Martin] Sickels, was born in Larken, Kansas March 19, 1884.
He
was united in marriage to Viola Mae Gibson, Dec. 17, 1907 and to this union three daughters and four sons were
born. They are Mrs. Ansel Freemyer of Conway, Ia., Mrs. Art Stiehl of Oakland, Minn., Mrs. Orville Erickson of Wells, Minn., Virgil Sickels, Albert Lea, Minn., Ray Sickels, Holdrege, Nebr. and Dale who preceded him in death. Two sisters and one brother preceded him
in death.
He
was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with
headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Those
who survive him in addition to his wife and children are two brothers, H. G.
Sickels of Memphis, Tenn. and Watson
Sickels of Brainard, Minn., one
sister, Mrs. Pearl Richardson of Grant City, Mo.; 24 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, a large number of
nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Mr.
Sickels was engaged in farming
all his life until retirement. They moved to Conway two and half years ago to
make their home.
He was a kindly, loving
husband and father and had friends by the score. He will be sorely missed.

Georgia Sickels, daughter of John
and Clara (Rusco) Freemyer was
born at Athelstan, Iowa on April 25, 1898 and departed this life July 5, 1996
at Bedford Manor Nursing Home at the age of 98 years 2 months and 10 days.
She
lived in Worth County, MO and Taylor County, IA and grew to maturity where she
attended the public school and the Athelstan Church.
On
January 16, 1918 she was united in marriage to Glenn Sickels at the Christian Church in Sheridan, MO.
To
this union two children were born: Glade and Gordon.
She was Post Mistress in Athelstan for
approximately 22 years retiring in June, 1968.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glenn, son Glade, three brothers, Roland, Arthur and Ansel Freemyer and one daughter-in-law, Venita (Mrs. Glade)

Left
to cherish her memory are: son, Gordon Sickels and wife, Ida May of Bedford, IA; Daughter-in- law, Ardith
Sickels of Clearfield, IA; two
brothers, Harold Freemyer of
Page, NE; Zelbert Freemyer and
wife Stella of Bedford, IA;
sister Agnes Porter of Yakima,
WA; six granddaughters, 10 great grandchildren and four great-great
grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
She
was a member of the Missionary Church in Bedford, IA. Her favorite Bible verse
was John 14:1-4.
She
was a kind and considerate mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who
knew and loved her.
Funeral services were
held, 2:00 p.m. July 9,1996 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev
Larry Secor officiating. Interment in Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa.
