Elma Candace, daughter of James and Isabelle Jarrett Steele, was born on January 15, 1883 north of Clarinda, Iowa. She attended a rural school and Clarinda High School until 1899 when the family moved to Clearfield. She graduated from the Clearfield school with the class of 1900.

Mrs. Bye taught in Taylor County and Clearfield Public School for a number of years.

On Feb.15, 1911 she was married to H. [enry] Franklin Bye at the home of her parents. They lived on a farm for four years and then moved to Clearfield. Mrs. Bye was assistant postmistress for her father, the late James Steele, who served as postmaster of Clearfield ten years. She was a faithful member of the Christian church, joining the church June 8, 1900.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin, who died June 6,1950. Surviving are cousins and a number of Mr. Bye's nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bye was keenly interested in the political and community life of Clearfield. She was Clearfield correspondent for various newspapers. She took [an] active part in neighborhood social life and activities.

Mrs. Bye was in failing health for the last three months and died at her home Thursday, April 18, 1957 at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 3 days.

Services were held at the Christian church in Clearfield April 20, 1957, conducted by Rev. Ron Graham. Interment in the Clearfield cemetery.

Capt Ernest Wm. Bye

Capt. Ernest Wm Bye son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm Bye was killed December 14,1944 on a Japanese Transport conveying prisoners to Japan. This transport was torpedoed and sunk on that date. Ernest was an enlisted man and left the U.S. on the Republic June 8,1940. He was taken prisoner at the fall of Manila.

Wm Byes were former residents of this community. Ernest was a graduate of Lawrence, Kansas University.

He was a nephew of Frank Bye and Leo Woodside.

Capt. Ernest Wm. Bye, 38, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E. [mery] Bye, former residents of Taylor County, was killed Dec. 14, 1944, on a Japanese transport conveying American prisoners from the Philippines. He was a nephew of Frank Bye and Leo Woodside of Clearfield.

George W. Bye

George W. Bye, son of Henry and Martha [Ann Critchfield] Bye, was born near Chillicothe, Mo., July 3, 1872, and died at his home in Watsonville, Calif., Aug. 24, 1939 at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 21 days. When but nine years old, the parents came to Taylor County, Iowa, and located on a farm 3 1/2  miles south of Clearfield. It was here George attended the rural school and grew to manhood. On August 17, 1894, he was married to Myrtle Sprague. To them were born three children, Georgia dying at the age of three years; Roland Frank of Watsonville and Madelyn Widner of Salinas, Calif.

The family resided some time in Kansas, returning to Iowa in 1913. In the winter of 1917 they moved to Wyoming and later to California.

Besides his wife, son and daughter and grandson, two brothers, Will Bye of Pomona, Kans.; Frank Bye of Clearfield; a sister, [Mary] Etta Jeanes, of Mount Ayr and a half-brother, Russell Bye of Cashmere, Wash., survive.

George W. Bye

George W. Bye, son of Henry and Martha [Ann Critchfield] Bye, was born near Chillicothe, Mo., July 3, 1872 and died at his home in Watsonville, Calif., Aug 24, 1939 at the age of 67 yrs., 1 mo., 21 days. When but nine years old the parents decided to bring their family to Taylor Co., Ia., and located on a farm 31/2 miles south of Clearfield.  It was here George attended rural school and grew to manhood. On Aug. 17, 1894 he was married to Myrtle Sprague. To this union were born three children, Georgia dying at the age of three years; Roland Frank of Watsonville, and Madelyn Widner of Salinas, Calif.

The family lived some time in Kansas, returning to Iowa in 1913. In the winter of 1917 they moved to Wyoming, and later to Calif., where he lived until his death.

Besides his wife, son and daughter and grandson, two brothers- -Will of Pomona Kansas, Frank of Clearfield, a sister [Mary] Etta Jeanes of Mt. Ayr and one half brother Russell of Cashmere, Wash., survive.

Many other relatives and numerous friends will hold his name in reverence.

The interment was in Watsonville, Calif., Aug. 26th.

CLEARFIELDMrs. Frank Bye received a call Saturday from Creston that her nephew, Harold [Eugene] Bye, 56, had died following a stroke. He was the son of Mrs. Tom Smart [Ethel Voss] and the late Robert Bye. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smart of Creston: one sister, Mrs. Chas. (Lillian) Johnson of Loveland, Colo.

Obituary - Lorena Myrtle Bye

Lorena Myrtle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Woodside [Elizabeth Heasley], was born Dec. 5, 1881 In Taylor county and died at Community hospital in Cameron, Mo., March 31,1954 at the age of 72 years, 3 months, 26 days.

She was married January 1905 to Wm. E. [mery] Bye of Clearfield. They located on a farm north of Maloy.

To this union were born two sons, Ernest W. [illiam], deceased, Ralph H. [enry] of Kansas City, Kans.; two daughters, Golda Louk of Missions, Kans.; Bernice Weisimiller of Brighton, Colo. The family moved to Kansas in 1918 and about 9 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bye moved to Missouri, spending the last 6 years in Cameron.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Capt. Ernest W. [illiam] Bye who lost his life in World War II.

Survivors besides the husband, two daughters and one son, are five grandchildren; one brother, Leo Woodside of Clearfield; one sister Mrs. Irma Grace of Newton.

Funeral services were held April 2 at Poland Funeral home In Cameron, conducted by Rev. Geo. Pol. Graveside services and interment were in Clearfield cemetery. Attending the funeral in Cameron from Clearfield were Mr. and Mrs. Alva Jones, Mrs. F. Bye and Mrs. F. Miller.

Clearfield Rites For Ralph Bye

Final rites were conducted at the Varner Funeral Home in Clearfield Saturday at 2:00 P. M for Ralph Henry Bye, 60, a former resident of the Clearfield Community.

Mr. Bye passed away at a hospital in St. Joe, Missouri, Thursday.

He is survived by a son, William S. Bye of Kansas City, three nephews, a niece and several cousins.

He will be remembered by many in the Clearfield area.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Frank Bye of Kansas City, Kansas came Saturday to attend last rites for his father, Ralph [Henry] Bye, which was held Saturday afternoon at the Varner Funeral Home.

They were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Jones.

Other guests Saturday afternoon in the Alva Jones home were Ailene Bye of Kansas City, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Greeley and Maureen Cruth of New Market, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jeanes of Lamoni, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Harland Freeman, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Freeman both of Blockton, Iowa and Mr. Robert Jeanes of Redding.

R. M. Bye--1876-1933

Robert M. [onroe] Bye, son of Henry and Martha [Ann Critchfield] Bye, was born near Chillicothe, Missouri, June 13th, 1876. He came with his parents to the farm 31/2 miles south from Clearfield in 1881, and there he grew to manhood. On September 8, 1897, he was married to Miss Ethel Voss, and to this union were born two children—Harold Eugene and Lillian. They resided in the vicinity of Clearfield until 1907, when they moved to Danville, Ill., remaining there for five years, and returning to a farm near Clearfield in 1912. Three years ago they moved to the vicinity of Creston, where Mr. Bye passed away on Sunday morning, April 30, at the age of 56 years, 10 mos., and 17 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his faithful wife, his son Harold of Creston; his daughter, Lillian Johnson of Afton; one grandchild, Ethel Lucille Johnson; one half-brother, Russell Bye of Cashmere, Washington; three brothers, George Bye of Watsonville, California, Wm. E. [mery] Bye of Ocheltree, Kansas, and Franklin H.[enry] Bye of Clearfield; one sister [Mary] Etta Jeanes of Mount Ayr; and many other relatives and friends.

In young manhood he united with the Baptist Church, later becoming a member of the Methodist Church in Danville, Illinois. Mr. Bye was a loving husband and a loyal friend, respected by a large circle of acquaintances and friends, and will be missed not only in the home, but in the communities in which he has resided.

Funeral services were held in Clearfield Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. A. Turner assisted by Rev. H. B. Hutchman of the U. P. Church. Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery.

On Sunday morning at their farm home north of Afton, occurred the death of Robert [Monroe] Bye. Death came almost instantly. He started to the barn to do chores, but was found a little later quite dead. Heart failure was certainly the cause. J. R. Crew attended, and made a second trip later to bring the body here to the home of his brother, Franklin Bye. His obituary is given elsewhere this week.

Obituary - Wm. E. Bye

Wm. E. [mery] Bye, son of Henry and Martha [Ann Critchfield] Bye, was born Aug. 4, 1881 and died at the Community hospital in Cameron, Mo., Nov 7, 1954 at the age of 73 years, 3 months, 3 days.

On Jan. 1, 1905, he was married to Lorena M. [yrtle Woodside] Bye and they located on a farm near Maloy, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. Bye were the parents of four children: two sons, Capt. Ernest W.[illiam], who lost his life Jan. 9, 1944, in the Pacific and Ralph H. [enry] of Kansas City, Kans.; two daughters, Golda B. Louk, who died June 20, 1954 and Mrs. Bernice Weisimiller of Brighton. Colo.

In 1909 the family moved near Clearfield where they lived until 1915 when they moved to Hartford, Kans. The past seven years, Mr. and Mrs. Bye lived in Cameron, Mo., where the wife and mother died March 31 this year.

Mr. Bye's chief occupations were farming and stock raising.

Besides the son and daughter, he is survived by five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in Cameron, Mo. Tuesday with interment in Clearfield cemetery.
