Funeral
services for Carrie Fay Pullen were held April 10 at Carson Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael Harvey
officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa.
Carrie
Fay Pullen, one of 14 children of Louis Elmer and Mary Elsina (Rabourn) Wyckoff, was born on January 4, 1914 in Bedford, Iowa.
Fay attended Bedford High School and then worked for
her father in his wallpaper business.
On
June 18, 1933, Fay and William
A. [lbert] "Bill" Pullen were
united in marriage in Bedford, where Bill managed an oil company and Fay cleaned homes.
Their
marriage was blessed with five children: Nancy [Elaine], Arthur [Eugene],
Gloria [Kay], Bill [William Albert, Jr.], and Kathy. After a couple of years, Fay and Bill moved to Shambaugh, Iowa where they worked together managing an oil
company with an adjoining cafe. They returned to Bedford in 1943 and Bill worked a short time for Cudahy's driving a cream
truck and then started his life-long farming career. In 1966 they moved to a
farm near Macedonia.
Fay was always a faithful member of the Christian Church
in Bedford, and after moving to Macedonia attended the Wheeler Grove Church and
the women's Fellowship.
Fay's family was the most important part of her life.
She and Bill always hosted
Sunday dinners and all the holidays were spent at their home. Fay enjoyed reading, cross stitching, and making
quilts, which she loved giving to family members.
Bill and Fay had enjoyed 50 years of marriage when Bill died on October 5, 1983. Following Bill's death, Fay moved to Carson, Iowa and became active in the Carson Presbyterian
Church and women's Fellowship.
In
1996, Fay suffered a stroke
and moved to the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, Iowa. Fay died at the Oakland Manor on April 6, 2000,
having attained the age of 86 years, three months and two days.
Fay was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; an infant daughter Nancy Elaine; brothers Fred, Arthur, Glenn, Alva, Leroy,
Ross, and Lee Archer; sisters Rose
Cortner, May Smith, and Beulah
Belle; half sister Leila
Wyckoff; half brothers Eldon
and Carl Wyckoff; son-in-law Ray
Howard; granddaughter Annette
Pullen; grandsons William
Pullen, Gene Pullen, and Gary
Pullen.
Fay is survived by her children Arthur Pullen and wife Mae of Omaha, Neb.; Gloria Howard of Dallas, Texas; Bill Pullen and wife Lee of Carson;
and Kathy Conover and husband Craig of rural Carson, Iowa; brother Rex Wyckoff of Bedford, Iowa; sisters Nina Gaule of Bedford, Iowa and Bonnie Weil of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eight grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

Chas. M. Pullen, 82, Takes His Own Life
Charley
M. [ontgomery] Pullen, 83, took
his own life with a .22 caliber rifle in the shed back of his home on west
Jefferson Street here Monday afternoon about 1:30.
He
had been in poor health and a disturbed mental state for some time. In the
office of the Times-Press Monday forenoon he placed an advertisement in Wanted: A .22 rifle. Later he
came in with a rifle bought here and stopped ad. He told folks he wanted to
shoot pigeons at the farm home of his son Bill Pullen, east of the Lake of Three Fires.
Mrs.
Elsie Dougan, head of the county welfare office, was contacted a little after
the noon dinner hour by an employee of the Times-Press, and told of the incident. She contacted the
sheriff's office at the court house and asked Deputy Sheriff TC Buchanan to
accompany her to the Pullen home, where a Mr. and Mrs. Whitney, an elderly couple from Sheridan, Mo., had
been caring for him.
They
went through the home, when admitted by Mr. Whitney, who reported Mr. Pullen was in the shed back of the house
with a rifle. When within a short distance of the shed Mr. Buchanan heard a
shot and saw Mr. Pullen’s body
drop to the ground. He was dead. The rifle, hanging by a cord from a rafter,
had been fired by a pull on a cord fastened to the trigger, apparently.
Funeral
services were held at the Baptist church at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon,
April 20, with Rev. Colvin Caughey officiating. Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Funeral
services for Charley Pullen,
who died at his home in Bedford, Monday, April 18, were held at the Baptist
church Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Colvin Caughey officiated. Burial in Fairview cemetery.
Charley
Montgomery Pullen, son of Albert
and Margaret [Margory White] Pullen,
was born Feb. 13, 1879, in Taylor County, Iowa and died at the age of 81 years,
two months, five days.
On
Sept. 7, 1903 he was married to Ida May Hardee and to them were born four sons and six
daughters. Two of the daughters, Verna [Ida] and Dorothy preceded their father in death.
He
is survived by his wife and the eight children. They are Virgil [Charles] Pullen of Macedonia, Clifford [Ellsworth] Pullen of Lenox, Bill [William Albert] Pullen of Bedford, Delmar Pullen of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Eva Young of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Mildred Slump of Omaha, Mrs. Lela Sherman of Goldfield, Mrs. Lois Constant of Sheridan. There are also five brothers, one
sister, 23 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren.
Mr.
Pullen was a member of the
Baptist church in Bedford. He was a loving husband and father. He spent his
married life as a farmer in Taylor County until his retirement in 1943, when
they moved to their home in Bedford.

Dorothy
D. Pullen, 66, of Clarinda died
Sunday afternoon, May 23, 1993 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha after a brief
illness.
She
was born March 26,1927 in Hopkins, Mo., the daughter of Frank [Marion] and
Letha [Ann] Blake New. On March
13, 1949, she was married to Max Pullen, who survives. She had worked at the Bethesda Care Center in
Clarinda and at the present time was employed at the Clarinda Auction Cafe.
Survivors
include her husband Max and
two sons, Kenneth [Lee] and family of Villisca and Gene and family of Bedford. There are 12 grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Melba Dawson of Bedford, Viola Pullen, Lenox, brother, Robert New, Shenandoah. She was preceded in death by her
parents, brother Orville New and sister Iola Millen.
Funeral
services were Wednesday, May 26 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Bettie
Hull officiating. Burial was in Memory Cemetery, New Market. A memorial is
being established.

here received the sad message Monday that Dovey [Dovie Delbert] Pullen, son of Mrs. Margaret [Marjory] Pullen living northwest of town died in France October 4th. He was with the
American Expeditionary Forces and pneumonia was given as the cause of his
death.

Obituary – Dovie Delbert Pullen was born in Page County, Iowa, on Dec. 15, 1897, and died on board ship enroute to France on Oct. 4, 1918, aged 20 years, 9 months and 18 days.
In 1915 he was united in marriage to Miss Lottie Lecord of Nebraska City, Nebr., and to this union one son was born.
On June 3, 1918, he was again united in marriage to Miss Flossie Nott of Gravity, to which union was born a son, Delbert Elsworth, who died in infancy.
He enlisted in the World War from Page County on July 26, 1919 [1918], going at once to Camp Pike, where he remained in training but a few weeks before being ordered to embark for France.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, mother, Mrs. Margaret Pullen, of Nebraska City, Neb., six brothers, Sylvester of Duncan, Charles of Nodaway, Silas of Gravity, Allie of New Market, and Jess and Tappan of Nebraska City. These, besides other relatives and friends, mourn his taking away.
The memorial address was delivered by Rev. Jasper Webster, the services being held in the park at Gravity Sunday afternoon, Oct. 3. The funeral was a military one, in charge of uniformed World War soldiers. Interment was made in the Gravity cemetery.

Mrs. A. Pullen, of Nebraska City, was in town Monday and Tuesday looking after business matters. She had been at Gravity over Sunday where the remains of her son, Dovey. D. Pullin who died from pneumonia in October 1918, while on the seas and on his way to France, were buried in the Gravity cemetery Sunday. He was buried in France and the body was recently shipped back to this country and arrived at Gravity Saturday.

to Memory of Davie Delbert Pullen at Gravity Sunday Afternoon, and a Like Service Held at Bedford Tuesday For Ed.

Last
Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock one of the largest crowds ever witnessed at a
funeral gathered at the City Park in Gravity to pay their last respects to Dovie
Delbert Pullen, who gave up his
life for humanity. Dovie Delbert Pullen was born in Page County Iowa on December 15th, 1897 and died on
board ship enroute to France on October 4th, 1918, aged 20 years, 9 months, and
19 days. In 1915 he was united in marriage to Miss Lottie Decord of Nebraska
City, and to this union one son was born. On June 3, 1918 he was again united
in marriage to Miss Flossie Knott of
Gravity to which union was born a son Delbert Elsworth, who died in infancy.
He
enlisted for service in the World War in Page County, on July 26th, 1919, going
at once to Camp Pike, where he remained in training but a few weeks before
being ordered to embark for France.
He
leaves to mourn his death, a wife, mother and six brothers, besides many
friends and relatives.
It
was a military funeral and the American Legion had charge and Rev. Joseph
Webber of the M. E. Church of that place made a short talk, which was a most touching
address in honor of the hero. Mr. Pullen died for home and country and Rev. Webber eulogized his life and memory. The pastor’s remarks were such
as to touch the hearts of every one in reach of his hearing. A picked squad of
12 Legion members were picked from the post at Lenox. As the casket was lowered
in the grave, three volleys were fired by the 12 soldiers over the grave of
their departed comrade.
The heartbroken mother
and brothers have the heartfelt sympathy of the Nation in the loss of their
loved one, who layed down his life that the world might be safe. All honor to
his memory.

Tuesday
afternoon in the courthouse park was held a Military funeral over the remains
of Edward Ewing who died at
the U. S. Marine Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 1st, 1920.
Young Ewing enlisted in the U. S.
Marines and spent eleven months over sea, and took part in several engagements.
The American Legion had charge of the funeral. E. E. Lowe of the Christian church conducted the services.
He
leaves a father Samuel Ewing of
Des Moines and a grandmother Mrs. Harriett Parker of Bedford. One by one these young soldiers are
answering the last roll call.
The
family have the sympathy of all in their loss.

Final Rites For Mrs.
Pullen
Mrs.
Esther Pullen, 60, formerly of
New Market, died October 13 at her home in Clarinda following a heart attack.
She had been in the hospital recently but had returned to her home a week
previous.
The
funeral and burial were Sunday, October 15. Rev. Ralph Allen of the First
Christian church was officiating clergy at the Walker Funeral Home for the
funeral, and burial was at Gravity.
Born
in Dedham, Iowa, she had lived in the Taylor county area and moved to Clarinda
about 20 years ago.

January 28, 1883 in Taylor county, Iowa, and passed away at the age of 79
years, four months, 21 days.
She
was united in marriage to Charley [Charles Montgomery] Pullen on Sept. 7, 1903 and to this union 10 children
were born.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Charley Pullen and two daughters, Verna [Ida] Bowman and Dorothy Pullen.
Her
eight children who survive her are Virgil [Charles] Pullen of Macedonia, Clifford [Ellsworth] Pullen of Lenox, Bill [William Albert] Pullen of Bedford, Delmar Pullen of Council Bluffs, Eva Young of Council Bluffs, Mildred Slump of Omaha, Lela Sherman of Goldfield, Iowa, Lois Constant of Sheridan. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren,

She
was a member of the Bedford Baptist church. She was a loving wife and mother
and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and friends.

Mrs. M. H. Pullen Died Friday Morning
Mrs.
M. [argory] H. Pullen, whose
serious illness was chronicled in our last issue, passed away Friday morning,
January 15, 1932, after an illness of a few weeks. She had been a resident of
New Market only the past few years, but had made a host of friends here who
sincerely mourn her death. The following obituary has been handed to us:
Margery
[Margory “Madge”] H. White was
born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, May 9,1853, and departed this life
January 15,1932, age 78 years, 8 months and 6 days.
She
was united in marriage to Albert Pullen in Monmouth, [Warren County] Ill., in 1871 [November 15, 1873], and
to this union twelve children were born. Her husband and four children preceded
her in death. The living children are Mrs. John Cordell [Cora Jane] of Nebraska City, Neb.; Mrs. Morton Olson of Columbus, Neb.; Allie [Ellsworth] of New Market; Charlie [Montgomery] of Gravity; Silas [Leonard] and Topan [Tappan
Harland] of Bedford; Jesse of Nebraska City and one son, Sylvester, whose whereabouts are unknown; also one sister, Mrs.
Joseph [Allen] Pullen [Minerva
White] of Braddyville She is also
survived by 37 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren besides a host of
relatives and friends.
She
was a kind and loving mother and a devoted church member.
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love has given,
And though the body slumbers
here
The soul is safe in Heaven.
The funeral was held
Sunday afternoon in the Baptist church and conducted by Rev. Young of the
Mennonite church. Burial was made in the Davis cemetery near Shambaugh.

age 82, of Lenox were held Wednesday, October 4, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at the

officiating. Interment was held in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

L. [etha] Pullen was born February
9, 1918 at Hopkins, Missouri and departed this life September 29, 2000.
She
was the daughter of Frank [Marion] New Jr. and Leatha [Letha Ann] Blake. Viola grew up in Hopkins, Missouri and on March 4, 1938
she was married to Clifford E.[llsworth] Pullen. To this union four children were born, Rita
[Kay], Carolyn [Lea], Diane and David. They started their married life on farms southwest of Lenox where
they raised their family. In 1972 they retired and moved to Lenox where she
resided until ill health forced her to enter Clearview Homes in Clearfield,
Iowa.
Viola had a love for gardening and flowers. When on the
farm her pride was to can or freeze 100 quarts of each vegetable or fruit they
grew and to freeze 100 chickens they had raised. She always had a sense of
accomplishment to a job well done before winter set in.
She
also had a love for company; many of the relatives would spend their weekends
or vacations on the farm enjoying her home cooking with bountiful meals of
fried chicken and fresh pies. Relatives and friends knew you could drop in at
her house at a moments notice and there would always be fresh baked cookies,
cakes or pies waiting for you with a hot or cold drink to go along with it.
Viola is survived by her children, Rita Shepherd and husband, J.D.; Carolyn Day and husband, Ted; Diane Spring and husband Larry; Dave Pullen and wife Charlene; eight grandchildren, Sherri Bolinger and husband Pat; Connie Hancock and husband Dan; Christina Robb and husband Kevin; Brian Day and wife Robyn; Troy Spring and fiancée Sherri; Pam Spring; Melissa and Ashley Pullen; 12 great grandchildren, Melissa, Ryan, Adam
and Jennifer Bolinger; Brandi, Nathan and Kari Hancock; Nicole, Derrick and
Caleb Robb; Tyler and Kyle Day;
sister Melba Dawson, brother Robert
New and wife Charlotte; brother-in-law Max Pullen plus special friends Bob and Roberta Lockhart,

Pullen, was born September 12,
1910 in Adams County, Iowa. He lived in Henderson, Iowa and grew to maturity in
Adams County where he attended the public school and the Christian Church.
On
June 18, 1933 he was united in marriage to [Carrie] Fay Wyckoff, Bedford, and lived here until moving to Henderson. To this union
four children were born: Arthur Eugene Pullen, Omaha; Gloria Kay Howard, Dallas, Texas; William Albert Pullen, Jr., Carson, Ia.; Kathy (Mrs. Craig) Conover, Griswold, Ia.
Mr.
Pullen was engaged in farming.
He
was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Elaine, and his parents.
Left
to cherish his memory are: his wife, Fay; daughters: Gloria and Kathy; sons: Arthur and William, Jr.; eight grandchildren; brother, Delmar Pullen, Council Bluffs, Ia.; sisters: Mildred Slump, Omaha, Nebr., Lela Sherman, Goldfield, Ia., and Lois Constant, Sheridan, Mo.

was a kind and considerate husband, father and grandfather and will be missed
