Noah W. Smalley, 81, Dies Here Sunday

Noah W. Smalley, a resident of Taylor County his entire life, died of a heart attack at his home in southwest Bedford Sunday evening, December 6.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson.  Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery.

Noah Wilson Smalley, son of Sarah Asher and George Smalley, was born July 8, 1861, in Jefferson township, Taylor County, Iowa, being aged 81 years, 4 months and 25 days at the time of his death.  He was forced to assume the responsibilities of a man at the age of thirteen, when his father was taken by typhoid fever.  With the assistance of his brother, Tom, he farmed his motherŐs Iowa prairie homestead.

He was married to Susan Ann Stewart April 15, 1888.  A native of Iowa, he was a self-made scholar and in his early life united with the Methodist church.  Later, he transferred his membership to the Baptist church.  He was superintendent of Forest Grove and Science Ridge Sunday schools until the illness of his wife forced him to move close to Bedford in 1917.

Since then his life and time have been devoted to caring for his wife, who is an invalid.  His patience and loving care with his family were noteworthy of a great man.

His constant cheerfulness and unselfish sense of humor were his lifelong standbys.  His friends or family never heard him complain.

Left with the pleasant remembrance that his eighty-one years here have given them, are his wife, Susan Smalley of Bedford; two sons, Dee Smalley of Independence, Mo., and Ralph Smalley of Conway; one daughter, Mrs. Bethel Nash of Bedford; twelve grandchildren and three great granddaughters.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Thomas, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Barnes and Mrs. Hettie Widner.
