Obituary -- J. D. Van Reenen

John David Van Reenen, oldest son of the four children of Cornelius and Betty Van Reenen, was born in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, October 22, 1853, and died at his home in Bedford, January 4, at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 13 days.

When but a boy the family came west, locating in Scott County, later coming to Bedford where they engaged in farming.  Finally deciding to locate here permanently they bought land in Taylor County where the family was reared.

Here David met and married Elizabeth Hartley.  He also bought land and established his own home here.

Two children were born to them, a son dying in infancy, and a daughter Etta L., now Mrs. Fred Pizza of Clarinda.

He and his wife fathered and mothered a nephew, Harry H. Hartley, taking him when a baby, caring for and educating him.  He now resides in Creston.

David's earnest wish and desire had been that he could remain in his home until his last journey.  This has been made possible by the untiring and loving attention given by the daughter and her husband.

For the past two years and nine months he had been cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Wid Holmes who have kept the home for him as they would for one of their own parents.

When a young man he united with the Methodist church and was a firm believer in that faith all of his days.  He was a good Christian man, a thoughtful neighbor, and a faithful friend.  A sister in Santa Ana, Calif., also survives.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Thursday forenoon, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hufstader.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. Leslie R. Cobb Dies In Hospital

Mrs. Leslie R. Cobb of south of Bedford died at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda Sunday January 2, 1944.

The funeral services were held at the Berea church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. R. C. Yaden of Blockton.  Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

Nellie Dale John, daughter of George [Riley] and Emma A. [Cook] John, was born on a farm adjoining her home, on March 12, 1888, being aged 55 years, 9 months and 28 days at the time of her death.

She was married to L. [eslie] R. Cobb on her eighteenth birthday anniversary, on March 12, 1906, and they had since made their home in the Berea neighborhood.  To them were born two sons and a daughter: Karl Cobb and Mrs. Norma Jean Simmons of Bedford and Wayne Cobb of Springfield, Missouri, who together with the husband survive.  There is also one grandchild, Lois Mae Cobb of Springfield, and her widowed mother, Mrs. Emma A. John, who made her home with the Cobbs for about thirty-five years.  Her father, two sisters and a brother preceded her in death.

She obeyed the gospel invitation at the Berea Church of Christ in 1902, under the preaching of Shannon D. Baker, at the early age of fourteen years, and remained a faithful member and constant attendant at all services of the church.

As the wife of a gospel preacher, she shared the joys and even the many hardships associated with that field of Christian service.  While her passing came in the midst of life, yet she lived long enough to see all of her children obey the gospel and establish Christian homes.

DIED.

Dowlin----July 31, 1893, at her home in this city, Mrs. Elizabeth Dowlin, aged 61 years, 5 months and 26 days.

Elizabeth Davis was born near Jefferson, Greene County, Pa., Feb. 5, 1832.  She was married to Josiah Dowlin in 1851, and they continued to reside in Pennsylvania until November 1868, when they came to Bedford.  The February following they moved to a farm in Benton Township, three miles west of Bedford, where Mr. Dowlin died Nov. 16, 1873.  Mrs. Dowlin remained on the farm until February 1891, when she removed to Bedford.  Deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist church for several years before her death, and has gone to claim the reward she strove so faithfully for.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, the room being literally packed with friends who desired to show their appreciation of the pure and noble life the deceased had led.  Rev. J. C. Lewis preached a very fervent discourse, and when he had finished there were not very many dry eyes in the congregation.

A sheaf of ripened wheat near the casket signified that a life that was full of benevolence and charity had been rounded out at a good age.

Deceased was the mother of six children, of whom five, Mrs. M. [ichael] Mann [Samantha], Miss Maggie Dowlin, Mrs. S. [amuel] D. [avid] Maxwell [Mary Jane], E. [llis] C. [layton] Dowlin and W. [illiam] C. Dowlin, are still alive.
