[Maude Durfey Streitenberger]

Obituary - Maude Streitenberger

Maude Durfey was born near Farragut, Iowa, August 11, 1894, and died Monday, Jan. 3, 1944, at the age of 49 years, 4 months and 23 days.  She lived near Farragut until she was about five years old, when the family moved to Riverton.  She united with the Christian church at Riverton while a girl.

On January 9, 1919, she was married to John Streitenberger, at Riverton.  In that same year they moved to Taylor County and had resided near Bedford since that time.

To them four children were born: Boyd, Doris and John who survive, and James who preceded her in death.  Beside the children and her husband, there is also a half brother, Ben Huffman of Bedford.

The funeral services were conducted from the Wetmore Funeral Home Thursday afternoon with Rev. B. H. Peterson in charge.  Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

Obituary - Mrs. Lydia Shepherd

Lydia Lenora Briggs, daughter of Sarah J. and Greenburg Briggs was born in Davis County, Iowa, October 29, 1865, and died at her home in Siam, Taylor County, Iowa, December 26, 1943, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 27 days.

On December 23, 1885, she was married to Vance B. Shepherd at Sidney, Iowa.  To them one son, Clarence Alfred, was born.  They reared him to manhood; he married and had a family of five children, and died July 11, 1929.  Just four months later Mr. Shepherd died, leaving Mrs. Shepherd alone except for the grandchildren, who through the past years have been a source of comfort to her.

Besides the five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, she leaves the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Augusta Millard, of Waterloo, Iowa; and one brother, Francis Marion Briggs, of Mitchell, So. Dakota.  One grandson, Glenn Shepherd, is serving in the armed forces overseas.

For the past 35 years Mrs. Shepherd's home had been in the community of Siam, where she had many friends.  She was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church.  She was a good woman, always willing to do what she could.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harry Walling of the Siam Methodist Church, on Thursday morning, Dec. 30, at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda.  Burial was at Shenandoah.

Obituary - Mrs. J. F. Walkup

Mary Elizabeth Meehan, daughter of John and Lydia Meehan, was born Nov. 20, 1857, and was the first white girl born in Clayton Township, Taylor County.  She spent her entire life in Taylor County, and died Jan. 4 at her home in Bedford, at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 15 days.

She was married to James Franklin Walkup March 25, 1880.  Five children were born to them: Mrs. Blanche Keith, Mrs. Maude Gordon, and Glenn Walkup of Bedford; Roy Walkup of Marionville, Mo.; and Frank Walkup of Altadena, California.

She was a member of the Baptist church since early life and was active in the Woman's Relief Corps for many years.

She is survived by the five children and her 91 year old companion; nine grandchildren, Floyd Gordon of Bedford, Mrs. Pauline Denton of Fort Worth, Texas, Pfc. Harold Walkup, Cpl. Robert Walkup, Pvt. Ralph Walkup of the armed forces, Donald and Wilbur Walkup of Bedford, Ruth Walkup of Marionville, Mo., Virginia Walkup of Altadena, Calif., and one great granddaughter, Carolyn Lee Gordon, of Bedford.  Two sisters, Mrs. S. J. Walkup of Deepwater, Mo., and Mrs. Judd Burnett of Duke, Okla., one brother, Charles Meehan of Lewistown, Montana.

The funeral services were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson, and the body was placed in the mausoleum in the Fairview cemetery.

C. W. Gilleland, 71, Dies In Hospital

C. [harles] W. [esley] Gilleland, a resident of Bedford and community for many years, died at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha Sunday, January 16, following a severe illness of several weeks.

The body was brought to Bedford where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Wetmore Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hufstader.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Gilleland was born in Illinois, August 5, 1872, being aged 71 years, 5 months and 11 days at the time of his death.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian [Maloy Beard] Gilleland of Bedford.

William Bix, of the community west of Bedford, was fatally injured Monday, when he was kicked in the head by a mule at a sale in Omaha.  He died Tuesday morning.  He was a single man.

The funeral services will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon.  Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery.

Obituary - Mrs. Floyd Journey

Wilma Edna Cooke, daughter of Arthur and Kate Cooke, was born July 1, 1904, near New Market, and died at her home, the same place where she was born, on May 9, 1944, at the age of 40 years, 10 months and 8 days.

Wilma was the youngest child of the family of five children.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and her father.

On June 3, 1923, she was married to Floyd C. Journey.  To them two daughters were born, Betty Jo and Nancy Lee.

When quite young Wilma was converted and united with the Baptist church.  At the time of her death she was vice president of the Baptist Missionary Society and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Those left to mourn are her husband, two daughters and her mother.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Baptist church in New Market, conducted by Rev. T. J. Overholt, assisted by Mrs. Overholt, pastors of the Mennonite church.  Burial was in Memory cemetery.
