Hold Last Rites For Lambley Sunday

Funeral services for Cpl. Elton B. [eal] Lambley, who lost his life during World War II, on August 24, 1944, while serving in France, will be held at the Methodist Church in Conway at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, April 10.  Rev. Charles Hagee of Stanberry, Mo., a former chaplain in the Armed Forces and also a former minister at Lenox, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Conway cemetery.

Cpl. Lambley was a son of Mr. and Mrs. [William] Fern Lambley [Edna Beal] of Conway.  The body is expected to arrive at the home Friday morning, accompanied by military escort.

Obituary - Elton B. Lambley

Elton B. [eal] Lambley, son of [William] Fern and Edna [Beal] Lambley, was born September 10, 1912, near Conway, and was killed in action in France on August 24, 1944, at the age of 31 years, 11 months and 15 days.

He attended school in Conway and graduated in 1930.  He had farmed all of his life and for himself since he was 21.

He was married to Bonnie Sharr, Jan. 24, 1940 and was called to the service on the first day of September 1942.  He reported in Des Moines; then [was] sent to Fort Sill at Lawton, Oklahoma and in March 1943 was sent to Greenville, Penn., and overseas in May 1943.  He landed in North Africa sometime around June 4.  He was then sent to Sicily, landing there July 10, 1943.  He was in Company I, 66th A. R. of the 2nd Armored Division and was in action all through Sicily.  He left Palermo and arrived in England November 26.  He landed in Normandy, France, on June 9, 1944; was through St. Lo and was killed somewhere northwest of Paris before they reached the Seine River.

Elton is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Fern Lambley of Conway; one brother, John of Conway; two sisters, Lela of Tekamah, Nebr., and Florence of Conway; brothers-in-law, Quatin F. Lambley of Tekamah and Robert Brown of Conway; two nieces, Joyce and Karen Brown; three nephews, Elton Brown, Frederick Lambley and Dale Lambley and Bonnie of Topeka, Kansas; grandfather, James Lambley of Conway.

Funeral services were held at the Conway Methodist Church Sunday, April 10, at 3:00 p.m., with interment in the Conway cemetery.  Rev. Charles A. Hagee of Stanberry, Mo., assisted by Rev. W. J. Weber, officiated.  The services at the graveside were directed by the Conway American Legion Post.

Arch Aiton Services Saturday

Archibald T. Aiton, son of William and Catherine [Hook] Aiton, was born near Bedford, Iowa, July 25, 1877, and died Monday, May 25, at the age of 75 years, 10 months.

He spent most of his life in and around Bedford, with the exception of a period of several years when he was in business in Shenandoah.

Surviving are three sons and one daughter: Bruce Aiton of Albany, New York, Kathryn, William and Donald Aiton of Denver, Colorado; three sisters: Mrs. Mary [Alice] Hall of Bedford, with whom he made his home the past four years.  Mrs. Jane Dresher [Jennie] of Bedford and Mrs. Emily Mason of Miami, Florida; one brother, James Aiton of Bedford.

Arch, as he was commonly known, was a familiar figure in and around Bedford.  His passing creates another break in the passing parade of a family, whose members have helped much in community affairs.

Funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clement Loehr.  Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. A. A. Sharp Rites Were Monday

Mrs. A. [lexander] A. [lan] Sharp of Bedford died at her home Saturday, February 5, after an illness of several weeks.

Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home Monday afternoon, conducted by Wilbur Travis of the Christian church.  Burial was in Lexington cemetery.

Sally Ann Graybill, daughter of John and Sally Ann Graybill, was born near Hopkins, Mo., Nov. 20, 1860 [1870?], and died at the age of 85 years, two months, 14 days.

She was married Feb. 27, 1889, in Bedford to Alexander Sharp.  To them 11 children were born, six sons, Ernest, Roy and Luther of Bedford, George and Oscar of Conway, Edward of Gravity; and five daughters, Mrs. Mary Wright of Greenwood, Mo.; Mrs. Lillie Burke of Great Bend, Kans., Mrs. Susie Souder of Conway, Mrs. Addie Million and Mrs. Mabel Mahan of Bedford.

Besides her husband and 11 children, she is survived by 21 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; one half-sister, Mrs. Dow Huntsman of Gravity.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

W. J. Egleston Died At Lenox

W. J. Egleston, retired farmer, died at his home in Lenox Sunday evening, January 30 after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, Wednesday afternoon, February 2, conducted by Rev. Willard Morris.  Burial in Gravity cemetery.

Will Jay Egleston, son of Benjamin H. and Ida M. Egleston, was born at Joliet, Ill., March 31, 1878 and died at the age of 76 years, nine months, 29 days.

When he was four years old, his family moved from Illinois, to the vicinity of Carbon, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.  With the exception of eight years spent in South Dakota, he lived the rest of his life in Montgomery and Taylor counties.  His principal occupation was farming, except for a period of about ten years, when he was employed by a hardware store in Villisca.

On September 21, 1932, he was married to Mrs. Vera Blakslee, of Gravity, and became a beloved father to her two daughters, Louise and Mary Ellen.

Mr. Egleston was a member of Christian Adventist churches in and near Villisca.  Wherever he lived, he associated himself with some church.

Mr. Egleston was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred of White River, S. Dak., and Arthur of Corning; and by a sister, Mrs. Louise Oster of Red Oak.

He is survived by a brother, Roy Egleston, of Sharpsburg; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Zuber, of Estacada, Oregon; his wife; two daughters, Louise (Mrs. Lee) Pershin of Lenox, and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Calvin) Vore, of Marfa, Texas; four grandchildren, Mrs. Martha Frame, of Creston, Richard, Julia and Lynda Pershin of Lenox; one great granddaughter, Lee Ann Frame.

Orie Duncan Rites Will Be Friday

Orie Duncan, 81, long-time resident of Bedford, died at St. Francis hospital, Maryville, Saturday, Feb. 6, after an illness of several weeks.

Funeral services will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Home, Friday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Robert M. Peters.  Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Obituary - O. E. Duncan

Orie Emmett Duncan, son of Daniel and Nancy Duncan, was born in Page County, Iowa, Oct. 28, 1873, and died in St. Francis hospital, Maryville, Feb. 5, 1955, at the age of 81 years, three months, seven days.

Mr. Duncan grew to manhood in Page County and there he was married to Bessie Walkinshaw of Blanchard, Iowa.

To them nine children were born: Mrs. Lucile Waddell of Longview, Texas; Omar D., deceased; Fred J. of Columbus, Georgia; Raymond J. of San Francisco, California; Margaret, who died in infancy; Orie Leland, Bedford; Mrs. Elfie M. Thompson, Bedford; Jim W., Des Moines; Willard Edgar of Anderson, California.

Besides the children, he leaves one brother, Omar Duncan of Indianola, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren.   Mrs. Duncan died December 17, 1946.

The Duncan family began farming in Page County and then quite soon afterward moved to Taylor County and located north of Gravity in the neighborhood of the Oak Hill church.  He was a member of the Methodist church, and on coming to the community of the Oak Hill church, his membership was placed there, where he sang in the choir for many years.

In 1916 they moved to Bedford where for a number of years he was employed by Taylor County, serving on the Highway department, and the last ten years of his active life was spent as marshal and street commissioner for the City of Bedford.

Funeral services were conducted from the Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford, Feb. 11, at 2:00 o'clock by Rev. Robt. M. Peters of the Methodist church.

A. A. Sharp Rites Here June 18

Last rites for A. A. Sharp of Bedford were held at the Shum Funeral Home Tuesday, June 18, Rev. Kenneth E. Miller officiating.  Burial [was] in Lexington cemetery.

Alexander Allen [Alan] Sharp, son of Burd and Mary Jane Sharp, was born at Buffalo, Kansas, Dec. 12, 1866, and died at the age of 90 years, six months, four days, at the home of his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Souder near Conway.

He was married Feb. 27, 1889, at Bedford, to Sally Ann Grable [Graybill].  To them eleven children were born, five daughters and six sons, all of whom survive.  With his eleven children, he leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a kind and loving father, was never too busy with his own work to help his family and friends.

After the death of his wife on Feb. 5, 1955, he made his home with his daughters.
