[127] McAlpin, Jean Audrey Huntington, was born December 15, 1918 at Gravity, IA, to Frank Earl and Ada (LaPorte) Huntington. She entered into rest at her daughter, Denise's home in Shambaugh, IA, Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at the age of 87 years.

She was raised on the farm and learned the value of hard work, persistence, and frugalness. She was the second born of seven girls. Jean graduated from Corning High School. She was a waitress in Bedford, IA when she was introduced to her future husband, Gerald. Jean was part of the women's workforce that made the bombs during World War II; therefore, Jean and Gerald were united in marriage August 21, 1943 at Riverside, California.

Following the war they lived on a farm at New Market, Iowa. They had three daughters, LeAnn, Sheryl and Janelle and moved to a farm near Siam where they then had two more daughters and finally their son, Denise, Marla, and Gerry. Jean's many labors of love included fixing numerous meals for family, hired hands and friends; washing laundry and ironing for a family of eight; supporting her children in all their endeavors; lending a listening ear of encouragement; loyalty and faithfulness to her husband; a caring heart and hand toward neighbors; and involvement with church fellowship. Besides all of the above, her dailies included chores of gardening, canning, freezing, dressing chickens, and helping with farming. The McAlpins farmed until they moved to the Essex area in 1973.

Jean was involved in the Essex Covenant Church, Women's Bible Studies, as well as Republican Women. Jean made it a priority to be at the birth of all 23 grandchildren in numerous cities. The couple moved to Clarinda in 1997, first to Foster Manor then to the Eiler House, where Gerald passed away in December of 1999. Jean moved in with her daughter, Denise Nelson, September 1, 2000. This fulfilled not only her desire but our prayers that she be cared for by family all the days of her life. She continually blessed us with her joyful smile.

After graduation she attended Business College in Des Moines and
following completion of her courses worked for the Stoner Piano
Company in Des Moines.

On February 8, 1942, Ruby was united in marriage to Rue K.
Minor, who at that time was in the Army Air Corp stationed in
Stutgart, AK. When Rue went overseas during WWII Ruby moved
back to Blockton where she along with her Aunt Frona took care

wonderfully canned and frozen food for the family's enjoyment
for many years. Ruby was also noted for her beautiful
homemade baby afghans, quilts and delicious homemade pies.
Of special delight to her family were the black raspberry pies
made from homegrown fruit.

Ruby, although reticent to play for anyone other than immediate
family, entertained and taught her daughters a love of music by
playing the piano. She wasn't one to join clubs or be especially
social, preferring instead to be a loving mother and homemaker
for her family. Her home was always welcoming to family and
her children's friends and was often a second home to their
special friends Phyllis Rusco and Marilyn Landis.

When Rue and Ruby's health no longer permitted them to keep
the house and grounds in Blockton they moved to Quiet Harbor
Estates in Creston to be closer to the hospital and their doctors.
There they made many new friends such as Bud and Kaye
Breckenridge. However, Blockton has been and will always
remain to the family "Home."

would be closer to daughter Marilyn and her family, and she
resided there until her death on February 19, 2008.
