Lawrence, Gerald Eugene - Gerald Eugene Lawrence, son of Kate and Ed Lawrence, was born April 24, 1941 at Blockton, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Perry, Iowa on June 13, 2013 after a lengthy illness.
Services for Gerald were held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at the Christian Church in Blockton, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Scot Marcum officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.
Jerry attended Blockton Public School and lived in Blockton most all of his life. He was united in marriage to Corina Hoffman in Blockton, Iowa on November 23, 1964. To this union one son, Mark Eugene, was born.
Jerry worked with heavy equipment on construction after getting out of school. In July 1965, he started employment with Taylor County. He worked for Taylor County for 30 years before retiring in 1995 due to failing health. He loved his job with Taylor County, taking pride in his work and also the friends he had made. After retiring, he would call the maintainer men and tell them to "clear all of his favorite rabbit hunting roads first!" He loved working with big equipment, helping Blockton area friends on their farms; he especially loved harvest time. Another pastime was to relax and play poker with family and friends. Jerry served on the Blockton City Council and took pride in the town, always mowing and thinking of ways to improve the streets.
After Corina retired, they decided to move to Arkansas for the nice weather and did so in the fall of 2005. They lived there until March 2013 when they moved back to be closer to family and 2 new great grandsons. Jerry enjoyed his many good friends and loved hunting and fishing and being with his family. He liked to travel and took several trips through the United States. The last few years were with the grandsons Tyler and A.J. They had great times four-wheeling and riding in the Colorado Rockies with the ATV's. Jerry and Corina loved camping. They came back to Iowa in the summer and camped at Corina's niece and nephew, Donella and Steve Baucom. They had a lot of fun times. The greatest joys in life were his family, son, grandsons, and great grandsons. He got to meet both of his new great grandsons, Connor and Landon, before he passed away.
Jerry, as everyone called him, had the nickname "Buford". To some he was Uncle Jerry and to other extended family members, he was affectionately called "Uncle Buford".
Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers Don, Bob, Dode, Virgil, and Jim; and two nephews Brian Lawrence and David Lawrence.
Those left to mourn his passing include his wife Corina of the home; son Mark and wife Penny; grandsons Tyler and wife McKenzie and great grandson Connor; grandson A.J. and wife Becca and great grandson Landon; brother-in-law and wife Jack and Sara Hoffman; sisters-in-law Helen Lawrence, Carolyn Lawrence, Marvel Melvin, and Sharon Groff; many nieces and nephews. Also left is his little Rat Terrier, Sassy, his constant companion and protector.
Services for Gerald were held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at the Christian Church in Blockton, Iowa at 10:30 am with Rev Scot Marcum officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mt Ayr, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his sister Florence Lindenmeyer and his brothers, Howard Lindenmeyer, and Robert Lindenmeyer who tragically died in a drowning accident at age 2. Jack was also predeceased by his parents John and Caroline Lindenmeyer, and his daughter Linda Ann Bolton of Lake Tahoe, California.

Jack was born in Terry, Montana on August 18, 1929, where he lived most of his early life. As a child he helped out on the family farm and loved to play basketball and football with his friends. His third grade teacher was especially hard on him as he was taught by his sister that year. He road his horse out on the farm and was known to carry his 22 rifle with him every where he went to use for hunting rabbits and rattle snakes. Jack participated in multiple sports in high school and was a 1947 graduate of Terry High School.

After graduation from high school, Jack spent one year at Montana State University, before returning home to help on the family farm, when his dad became sick. After things stabilized at home, Jack joined the Air Force eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant and it was there that he learned the trade that he would pursue as a career.

After being honorably discharged form the Air Force, Jack moved to the Los Angeles area to live with his brother Howard. It was there, in 1957, that he would meet and later marry the love of his life, Phyllis Suffridge. Jack and Phyllis married in 1959 and raised five children in the Southern California town of Anaheim.

In 1958, while attending the University of Southern California, Jack took a job in the Engineering Department at Hughes Aircraft Company in El Segundo, California. Jack was a expert in the field of electromagnetic compatibility and interference and worked in that field as a consultant, analyzing steel shield constructions through radio frequency testing.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI, was an industry that was in its infant stages when Jack started consulting in 1984, which enabled him to be actively involved in the design and development of some of the industry’s early standards. His company is involved in testing about one hundred MRI shields across the country each year and is called upon frequently to find and fix problem areas at many other locations, world wide. One client stated that, “there will be no replacing of Jack in this industry, as few people understand the radio frequency technology the way that he did. He will be sorely missed”

Left to cherish Jack’s memories are: his beloved wife, Phyllis Carol Lindenmeyer of Bedford, IA; one daughter, Carrie Maureen Stephens of Chino Hills, California; three sons, John David Lindenmeyer of Bedford, IA., William “Bill” Howard Lindenmeyer of Brea, CA., and Steven Paul Lindenmeyer of Brea, CA.; Additionally, Eighteen Grandchildren and eight Great Grandchildren were “Papa Jacks” pride and joy. Tyler, Eugene Winston "Win" - Celebration of Life Services for Win Tyler, age 84, of Lenox, who died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at his home will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 10:30 AM at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox. Visitation will be held Friday at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox from 3-7 with the family greeting friends from 5-7. Interment with military rites accorded by the Parkinson American Legion Post No. 250 will be held in the North Cemetery in Lenox. Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials be given in Win's name.

Eugene Winston "Win" Tyler was born on October 20, 1928, in Lenox, Iowa, to Gladys (Lamb) and Oscar Donald "Don" Tyler.  He was the eldest of three children.  Win entered into eternal rest at his residence on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 5:22 p.m. at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 12 days after a hard-fought battle with COPD.

Win spent his childhood in Lenox, graduating from high school in 1946.  As a teenager, he was very active in sports and music, having received many awards and honors for his musical abilities.  He was both an accomplished pianist and soloist and was highly sought after for both talents.  In church, Win performed in a quartet with Forrest Whipp, Bob Long and Guy Henderson.

Win graduated from the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy in 1950.  During his college career and life in the ATO fraternity house, he did a lot of singing, and his favorite song to sing was:  "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight."   With his good looks, suave personality and many talents, Win was voted "most eligible bachelor on campus."  He remained popular and well-liked all the way to the end.

On August 18, 1950, Win was united in marriage to Bonnie Jean Baskerville, whom he met on a blind date at the Whetstone Pharmacy in Iowa City. Win and Bonnie were married at the Congregational Church in Fonda, Iowa.  They would have celebrated 63 years of marriage this August.

Win and Bonnie made their home in Lenox for six months before he was drafted into the service during the Korean War.  He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, at the 97th General Hospital where he worked as a pharmacist.  They made their home in Frankfurt for 16 months and traveled extensively while they were there.

After returning to the United States, Win went to work for his father in the pharmacy as the third-generation family pharmacist.  During this time, he had a chance to audition for the world-renowned Fred Waring Pennsylvanians -- a large choral group and orchestra from Pennsylvania that came to Iowa every Thanksgiving to perform -- but he chose pharmacy as his career instead.

Win's interests in keeping the town of Lenox alive were varied:

Park and pool director for 35 years;
50-year member of the Lenox Rotary International Club and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award through this organization for his significant monetary contribution to the eradication of polio;
Served 25 years on the golf board;
50-year member of the Chamber of Commerce;
53-year member of the Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees;
Served on the school board for 6 years;
Lifetime member of the American Legion and was treasurer of the local American Legion for 30 years and Commander of Parkinson Post 250 for 2 years;
50-year member of VFW and the Elks.

Win was Chairman of the Centennial Parade in 1972. He was also Grand Marshal of the parade that year. He was chosen in 1985 to receive the "People Helping People" Award. Win was the recipient of the Iowa Volunteer Award from the Governor in 1990. This past spring, he received the Urban Good Neighbor Award. Win was very instrumental in getting the new golf course, the wind turbine which was named after him, and the new medical clinic.

Win was a lifetime member of the Iowa Alumni Association and member of the I-Club and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

Win was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant and remained a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church where he served as treasurer off and on for 25 years in addition to serving the church through his musical gifts during his teen years.

Win donated generously to anyone who came to him for help.  He gave anonymously to many people in need -- anyone who was sick or couldn't make it on their own.  The school was a great recipient of his generosity as well as many other organizations.

In June of 2011, an article about Win's life and career appeared in OUR IOWA magazine under the heading "Country Character." Shortly thereafter his health began to decline.

During Win's 60+ years as a pharmacist, he mentored/coached many individuals who went on to become pharmacy techs, pharmacists, and other professionals within the medical field and some who chose professions outside of the medical field.  He also coached and mentored many of the lifeguards and managers at the swimming pool. He loved to see the people he mentored succeed.

Win loved his family and his work.  His hobbies in early life were fishing, taking his boat to Lake Icaria and helping in the yard.  He also enjoyed a good round of golf.  His favorite place to travel was Europe.

As everyone knows, he was a diehard Iowa Hawkeye fan -- through thick and thin, winning and losing -- and held football season tickets for years. Thus, Win will be buried in his Iowa Hawkeye colors, and his service will end with the Iowa Fight Song.

To quote Nancy Heim (and his family would agree) from the April 3, 2013, Lenox Time Table, Win's favorite quotes were:  There are always two sides to every story; a stitch in time saves nine; and a place for everything and everything in its place.  Win was fastidious/meticulous to a fault.  He epitomized the Iowa work ethic that is respected throughout the country.

Tyler Pharmacy was in the family for 133 years, having been started by his grandfather, Oscar Dewayne, in 1880.  Many generations of children returned year after year as an adult to enjoy a soda at the old-fashioned soda fountain at 1950's prices.

For 60 years, Win got up every morning with the chickens to do what he loved most – serve the people of this community. When he sold his pharmacy this past spring, he sold his heart and soul. His life was well spent, his purpose complete.

As we struggle to make our entrance into this world, so too did Dad struggle to leave this world – with every last breath he took. You can breathe easily now. Rest in peace, Dad. You've earned it! You will have to find another profession in heaven because medicine doesn't exist there. You have gone to a place of perfect peace, love and health. You can now sing tenor with a choir of angels.

Those left to mourn are his wife, Bonnie, and his children:  Cheri (Tom) Seeton, Golden, CO; Jennie Tyler, Des Moines, IA; Rick (Maggie) Tyler, Iowa City; granddaughter, Savannah, and grandson, Sean, Denver, CO.  Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Judy (Dale) Eklund of Afton, IA, and his brother, Phil (Judy) Tyler of Creston, IA, as well as many nieces and nephews and other extended family, long-time friends and his pharmacy family.

Welcoming Win on the other side are his parents, grandparents and other relatives, several pets, and many friends who preceded him in death. Surely there is a new committee being formed in heaven right now.

2 Timothy 4:7 NLT: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful." Matthew 25:23 NLT: "The master said, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.'"

Williams, Gerald "Jerry" O. - Jerry Williams, age 58 of Lenox died Saturday, June 22, 2013. In accordance with Jerry's wishes, only a very private family service will take place. A memorial will be established in his name. Memories can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Gerald O. Williams was born October 21st, 1954, to Orville and Doris Williams. He lived in Lenox for most of his life and attended Lenox schools.

Jerry's son, Jayme, was born in February 1973, and Jerry raised Jayme for many years. Jerry married Lori Wurster in 1982 and was a loving husband. His life was one of quiet dignity, and others recognized and respected his sincere heart.

Jerry had many hobbies and talents. He loved training his two German Shorthair dogs and spent many fall days hunting pheasant and quail with them on his father-in-law's farm and in Missouri. He loved to fish and had many great times fishing in Minnesota and Canada with his father-in-law, brother-in-laws, Lori, nephews, friends, and Jayme. One of his favorite "big fish" memories was of the giant muskie Jayme hooked while on a fly-in Canadian vacation.

Jerry loved music from the time he was a teenager. His love of listening to and playing the blues and Christian music on his guitar enriched his life. He loved being a homebody, "piddling" in the basement and garage, using his carpentry skills on his home, and eating Lori's homemade cookies. Another of his favorite things to do was to go and listen to blues guitarists with Lori.

For most of his adult life and in the past months in particular, Jerry devoted a large amount of his time reading his Bible and praying for his family and his friends. His faith was steady and his heart was clean, knowing that God loved him and sent His Son, to die for him and for us.
Jerry's favorite Bible verses were:

Romans 5:8-10 "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved..."

Romans 1:16-17 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, 'But the righteous man shall live by faith."

1st Corinthians 2:9-10 "but just as it is written, 'Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.' For to us God revealed them through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God."

Left to cherish their memories of Jerry are his wife, Lori; his son, Jayme and his girlfriend, Erin; and he and Lori's family, extended family, and friends. Comfort comes from their faith of being reunited in Heaven

Frances "Johnnie" Marie (Johnson) Zabel, 89, of Lenox, passed away quietly on Sunday, November 24, after a short bout with pneumonia. Her family was by her side.

“Johnnie” was born in 1924 in Salina, Kansas, to Nels and Agnes Johnson, and grew up with her older sister Dorothy on the family farm during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Her childhood was anchored in the tight knit Swedish-community around the Salemsborg Lutheran Church, a rural crossroads church south of Salina.

After graduating from Smolan High School in 1941, Johnnie attended business school in Salina. While working as a secretary in Salina during World War II, she met young Army sergeant Ralph Zabel, who was stationed at nearby Camp Phillips before shipping out to the European Theater. Following the German surrender, Ralph returned to the States, and during a July 1945 furlough, he and Johnnie were married. Ralph then headed for the Pacific Theater, but atomic bombs hastened the end of the war and Ralph became part of the American occupation force in Japan.

Following Ralph’s discharge from the army in early 1946, he and Johnnie settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Ralph went to work in a bank. Their first son, Doug, was born in Lincoln, and in July of 1947 the young family, preferring small town life, relocated to Lenox, Iowa, where Ralph went to work at the First National Bank, first as a teller and later as cashier.

Daughter JoAnn was born in 1951 and son Gary arrived in 1955.

In 1954, Johnnie and Ralph teamed up with Ralph’s sister Esther and her husband Elmer Bose to buy the bank, and for the next half-century Johnnie and Ralph were fixtures in the civic, school and church life of the Lenox community, enjoying golf, bowling, bridge, travel, school sports and the fellowship of a wide circle of friends.
In late 2004, after 59 years of marriage, Ralph passed away, and a few months later, Johnnie moved into the Vintage Park (assisted living) Apartments in Lenox, where she enjoyed the company of a number of friends. In recent years, frustrated by a nearly total loss of hearing, she spent most of her days reading, giving up the regular bridge games she enjoyed for decades.

Johnnie is survived by son Doug Zabel of Austin, Texas; daughter JoAnn Tieszen (Dennis) of Waterloo, Iowa; son Gary Zabel (Karen) of Lenox; grandchildren Ben Newport (Corinne) of Cedar Rapids; Chelsea Markle (Brett) of Seattle, Washington; Rob Brammer (Nicky) of Essex, Iowa; Andy Brammer (Julie) of Lenox; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Johnnie in death are her parents, Nels and Agnes Johnson; a sister Dorothy Sandberg; and her loving husband Ralph Zabel in December of 2004
