Orr, William Boyd

Subject: Another veteran for your list...

Jan 2001: From: Meejaman@aol.com

Pat, l'm not sure whether your veteran's list is meant to include those who were FROM Taylor County, or veteran's who lived there. If the latter, you may want to include my great-grandfather, William Boyd ORR, buried at Grove Cemetery. William was born January 7, 1842 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Sophronia HURD of Ohio October 7, 1868, probably in Morning Sun, Louisa County. William died Feb. 2, 1889. William was a Civil War veteran. He joined the 2nd Regiment Illinois Light Artillery March 21, 1864, in Peoria, and was assigned to Battery A. At that point in the war I'm not sure of his area of service, but unit history places Battery A in the area of Helena, Arkansas about that time. William's service record, which I received from NARA, doesn't identify where he served. He also had a pension record, and I hope to get that and learn more. He was mustered out of service with the rest of his unit on July 27, 1865 at Camp Butler, Ill.
